The "old timey" beat you're talking about is a traditional Japanese guitar known as a Shamisen. She's going for an edo period Japanese aesthetic with this one like she's some old school royalty.
I was catching it, props for putting it into words clearly. That matches with the artwork dressed up in the same style.
Traditional Japanese music sound with that hard metal on metal clang which goes into her weapon of choice that giant scythe. It a hard beat because it's subtle you start listening to the lyrics you just hear the metal on metal and lose the shamisen outside of the chorus.
The metal clang is probably from a muted hand gong. I mean muted as in when the instrument is played it is held parallel to the ground and held like a plate creating more of a metallic clang.
when you say "royalty", that remind me of how "off with *his* head" is a quote from Shakespeare's Henry, said by Queen Margaret, which is also a royalty.
Old timey beats brings it home that this is a human fallacy, the logical end of philosophy, the “be whatchu want to be”, the conclusion of entropy.… if you will, that was kinda ill.... just do what you wanna do,

So, imo, this is probably the deepest of Calliope’s songs, and you did a better job breaking it down than I expected. So much of this song is directed at both Calliope’s fans who are asking her how she has gotten her success and people online who have been attacking her as nothing without her role in Hololive. And her words to both are pretty simple, “make something, get up on this stage and earn my respect”
It’s both how she earned her own success, so it is heartfelt advice to others trying to be like her. It’s why she’s talking about “Tough Love,” in this song. At the same time, this song is also her telling off the people who’ve been trying to tear her down. “Come back and take another shot when you’ve actually gone and done something.”
In essence it’s a challenge to both the people who say they want to be like her and to the people who are jealous of her success

It's like those old raps between aggressive gangs, but instead it's the internet community.
It's also a bit of a jab at this wave of v-tubers that try to develop a twitter followings months before ever debuting, expecting to get famous without having actually done anything.

Btw this song was a sort of response to the people who she gave advice to, about becoming a vtuber,(people that are known for putting”vtuber” in their bio but not actually making content), after they turned it around and gave her shit, on Twitter, for giving them advice.
Basically, this. A friend and I were just talking about this song, when she dropped it, saying that SFJ would really enjoy this one, and may possibly make it his favorite one of her songs. Outside of that, another friend and I were talking about how this song was, like you said, a diss to all those "Vtweeters" (I forget who coined this, so I can't credit them, unforunately) who got mad because she spoke the truth to them on why they weren't successful, whatever that may have been to each individual.
The funny thing is, she wasn't wrong then, and she isn't wrong, here in the song. If anything, their negative reaction to her advice was practically proof that her point was correct. Those vtweeters don't [want] to be vtubers. They just want to act like "arbiters" for the community because they think simply having Vtuber in their bio or name gives them some type of validation that they seem to be keeping from themselves.
...and then they took that as insult from a "corporate" Vtuber against the 'poor indie Vtubers.'
Calliope is trying to teach a lesson to the slow class.

A lot of the early gen hololivers have said that they wouldn't stand a chance against the younger gens in an audition.
Calli's lines about being on the mountaintop aren't satire. She definitely had to work to get to where she is, and Cover wouldn't have chosen her if she wasn't worth their time.
Ironic that they're saying Hololive EN members are only popular cause of their corporate backing, even though basically every one of them has had some kind of notoriety in their respective communities beforehand, especially Calliope( and Gura).

About the beat, I think that's what she likes. She moved to Japan to be closer to the kind of rap she loves so it makes sense so have kind of the same beat. I think further talking would be breaking the number 1 rule from the fight club so I'm just gonna stop.
I understand you about a more gangsta beat, something that heavy to break the eardrums, somebody send her a crazy beat! She can rap Snoop Dog and Eminem.
She still has to do the Rap God cover for the 1 million subs (and maybe Godzilla if she practice it, you can look for the clip where she practiced it)

Well she did say in her release party to check out AO's channel. It shows a sample of the Japanese scene that she is into. So you could recommend that without breaking the silly rule that isn't really a rule. It's just their in their contract not to talk about it and is completely public information and you shouldn't feel guilty about knowing as long as you don't discuss it on her channel.

A lot of her success comes from the fact that she auditioned into a popular corporate group. But long before that, she was grinding hard at making music. Music which you all need to listen to, by the way.

Two things that are considered in this song are that at one point she said to aspiring vtubers something to the effect of “Don’t just tweet make something I want to root for you but you aren’t making content” and vtweeters got mad about that and her favourite movie is fight club both are important to the song
And they dragged out the indie vs corp kinda deal while calli actually support good indie vtuber, like ririsya for one who was covering her song. (and ngl I'm glad I found ririsya through calli bcs ririsya is good)

I think the beat is almost a cultural shock because that's almost how J-Rap (short for Japanese Rap) is. Obviously this one is inspired by japanese folk music, but her other songs follow this kind of wacky beat that is particular in many J-Rap songs. The same happened with Jazz, as Jazz was (or is) in Japan HUGE, but it parted ways with the rest of the world and appeared genres that indeed sound very "japanese". But yeah, Scru is right, Calli probably would melt our brains with a trap song. I really appreciate your videos my man. With each one I'm learning a lot of a genre that I barely know, while also laughing my ass off of how funny you are. Excited for the announcements of this year!

The "Little Miss Company Hire" is because people say she's only famous because she's under Hololive. And it's true, being in Hololive does give you a boost of popularity at first but after that she worked hard to be where she is.
When you're about 8 minutes in and talking about disregarding something because of the aesthetic and 'bro she raps better than you' reminded me of Rob Zombie replying to people bitching about how he was hanging with Babymetal a few years back. "They roll harder than you" - Rob Zombie
Hypothesis: Calli's relationship with these producers is motivated by cross-promotion. She doesn't just want her music to get out there but give exposure in the West to these Japanese track makers. Saying "Gimme a Brixton drill beat", or whatever wouldn't give the producers a chance to show what they're made of.
Considering she's a fan of several JP producers and performers, she definitely wants their sound out their more. Spread the love and all.
She likes the underground JP music after all, it only makes sense she wants to bring "Hell to Earth" as an emissary (or apprentice I should say) of Death
I'm pretty sure these specific producers are what brought her to Japan, I feel like working with them is probably like working with your idols to her. I agree with Scru though, I did think this beat was lackluster, sorry AO.

For sure for sure it's the sound she wants. The other "wonky" ones were very electro-swing, I think? And this one is straight up wafuu (Japanese style, with Japanese instruments and such). But that's the "gap" as they say. You want that contrast to clash to make different stuff.

Both KokoroBeats who did the track for her first songs, and AO who did this one, belong to TamaOnSen. As Calli described it, they are a "Touhou Doujin rap" group, Touhou being a video game series from the 90's. So, as always I am very impressed on how fast you picked up the video game influence to the beat track.
She mentioned in one of her early streams how she made a trip to Japan specifically to go see TamaOnSen live, and it is part of what got her to start making her own music.
The one thing I gotta correct - Touhou started in the 90s, but it's still going today, if anything stronger than ever with all the doujin games getting releases on Steam and console.

This is the underground music influence that she always mention. This is the style she wants to stick to and its definitely far from mainstream tastes. Kokorobeats on the other hand can produce really good pop/hiphop music. I've tuned into one of his online concerts, they are fire. Some of his music the reminds me of DJ Deckstream.
If I'm not mistaken, "touhou" roughly translates to 'eastern'. So "Touhou doujin rap" more closely means something like "Asian Indie rap", than having to to with the Touhou game series

You were spot on about it being an old-timey beat, just in a different global hemisphere. There are certain sections of the song where the beat has a very traditional Japanese feeling to it. Its like an infusion of traditional sounds that have been modernized. You can hear this around the 12:10 mark, as example. As someone who has lived in japan for over 2 decades this sound just jumped right out at me the first time I heard this song. You'd have to be familiar with the culture to really catch it. Shout out to Mori: You're kilin' it!
Calli chose this beat herself... I would not even begin to assume why. That being said, I think it is fine to be critical of and I'm sure it is welcome to Calli herself. I know that feeling when you find somebody new and they are sick but you feel like with x or y they could be even more. I think we will just have to be patient. All things considered Calli is still in the early stages of her music career and has strived to be different from the beginning so it might be awhile before we get something that smacks main stream in its mouth.
I like that he is honest and not just sucking up to the artists.

She’s not particularly new to rap her old stuff is even on RUclips but we try not to mention the name too much cause the last time a hololive member had their past brought up they were “graduated” from hololive but if you want it it’s DEMONDICE
As a few others have pointed out, Calli has mentioned her biggest inspiration when it comes to rapping are underground Japanese rap/hip-hop artists. A lot of J-Rap has rather unconventional flows and beats compared to western rap, and I can see her using that strangeness in this track specifically (mostly due to the traditional Japanese instruments like a shamisen being used in the beat).
If you're ever interested in listening to some J-rap artists I highly recommend artists like DOTAMA, Scha Dara Parr, Zeebra and Reol. There is also TamaOnsen, whose leader Kokorobeats worked on some of Calli's songs! The language barrier obviously makes it hard to appreciate the lyrics but I feel you'd get a further understanding of Calli's beats!

I’ve been waiting to see your reaction to this! Absolutely love this song, it’s probably my favorite out of all her originals. In this song she’s kinda making jabs at her haters, like those who say she’s only successful because of the hololive branding, but she also is dissing a certain subset of twitter users we like to call VTweeters. Basically they’re people who put “Vtuber, debut TBA” and whatnot in their names for attention. Nearly all of them don’t plan to actually debut, many don’t even have a model, and they just like to start drama on twitter. But the song is also supposed to be motivational too, both for her fans and those vtweeters. So you could interpret the lyrics as something like, “You have the potential to be great, so if you want to be recognized, you better get off your ass and put in lots of hard work and effort.
After you pointed it out it the backing track does kinda give me a bit of a swing vibe, which makes sense given who mixed the song. The AO dude that worked on this also goes by TOPHAMHAT-KYO and is part of FAKE TYPE. He makes some really swing/japanese rap songs (some of my personal favorites are Mad Rat Dead Rap and Mister Jewel Box.)
AO does seem to always write electro-swing no matter what instruments he's using. Hence Scru's "Prohibition era" comment.

As a fellow critic and content creator, I thank you.
Beyond any "jabs" at critics or jokes I like how her songs always tell a story, Some can do that sometimes, but to have every song tell something about a part of your life or a life experience can't be easy. Being a writer and a bit of an artist I'd have a hell of a time trying to pour all life experiences into every story or piece of art I put to paper or digitally. Also She has kept up with at least 1 monthly original so far and some collabs elsewhere also so pretty impressive imo. Also if I haven't stated before I agree it would be fun to hear her do these songs to traditional rap style music, but I think it's more like Cover/hololive that keeps her from going too hardcore. They may ignore the lyrics due to the fact the bubbly music behind it chills it out a bit, so I believe it's more like a minor set of strings she's subjected to or walls if you will. I have theories that when she in real life goes to the Japanese underground rap things she's talked about her stuff is likely more hard and gritty lyrics to a hard and gritty beat.
honestly i think its more of her choice in what she likes, she's said repeatedly she shoots for the japenese internet style of rap (and jokes about it being dead). i don't know if Cover/holo specifically are too concerned over it. A couple of the girls have done some less than idol like covers or originals (FBK's cover of Bitter Choco Decoration, Hachamma's cover of Echoes, Marine in general. while not official, Okayu's cover of Inochi Ni kirawarete Iru is among my favorites) and Her past stuff isn't too far off from what she does now alot of the time.

@@MrZilvis78 TBH, i kinda expect her to do at least one hard song just because her fans want one, but from what i've seen, the tracks tend to be her preference.
I don't pretend to know what goes on behind the scenes at holo, so who knows, but i will say Calli's rapping is one of the reasons she has more Japanese fans than English. I wouldn't be surprised if Holo just let her have free reign on the creative side to capitalize on that. She was hired for her Skills in music over her streaming experience after all.

The song from Cali seems a lot more direct this time around. There have been some people that ask how to get into what Cali is doing with all this Vtubing stuff and she ended up responding “just make content. Doesn’t matter of it’s good or bad, just start making stuff.” And people got offended over it, so I think the song is meant a bit as a clap back.
Now on a flip side I do think this song is applicable to other people outside of the community. People that are all talk but don’t have credentials. The people that talk a lot of shit but never really showed anything to back themselves up. And I do think everyone knew someone like that at that point. Not sure how applicable it is for Rappers so I can’t say for sure. But it’s a song meant for a specific thing which can be taken another way in a more general sense.

She said its a tough love for both the deadbeats and anyone aspiring to be a content creator. She doesn't want to see people fail but she also is giving the advice of sticking to the grind if you really want it. At the same time it was shots at the people who claim to be content creators that whine on twitter but never release content. Thats the gist of it. She kinda makes me think about Ronnie Radke in this aspect. Both don't wanna be trapped in a single genre like a vast majority of musicians. Today I wanna make something a more pop and eletronic rap, tomorrow old school hip hop and metalcore.
Dude the beat is themed around traditional japanese ceremonial music which plays off of the theme of the training at the mountain top with the masters, this beat being in this song wasnt an accident
The beat on this one had a specific esthetic with the traditional Japanese instruments, but it sounds like it was mixed in a way that doesn't lend itself as well to her Flow and sound. It's a solid beat, and definitely has catchy bits, but the mix makes it hard sometimes. Overall though the song is a fucking banger, pure 🔥!

Dang, with your lyric breakdowns now i see this song can be applied more on general out of the vtuber world. About the beat, i think it's her identity (?). Like, a gap between gangsta with cute touch here and there. Her lyrics and vocal is pretty gangsta, so she need something sounds cutesy (?) to goes along with it.

8:17- I think what you're kind of looking for here is the concept of slant rhymes; words that don't QUITE rhyme but sound incredibly similar and have a certain rhythm that makes it so that you can trick somebody's brain into turning it into a rhyme. I don't listen to much rap, honestly, but you see it in poetry quite a bit. Calli uses these quite a bit in her music and is extraordinarily good at them, whether it be just using the words or slicing them up to make the rhythm work.
I just recently fell down the vtuber rabbit hole and I’m glad to see someone else enjoy Calli’s tracks as much as I. Earned a new sub, bro. Keep up the good work

Also the twangy instrument you talk about towards the end of the video kind of sounds like a Shamisen, a traditional japanese instrument (or at least that’s what the japanese styled cover image makes me think of)

Its so multi-faceted, on the surface level its got a bunch of death god stuff too, like Scythe swinging and death etc... Then theres all he deep shit rhymes and "slaying"
One of the best things Callie does, is Tonal Dissonance. You look at her character design, and you expect super cute... She's a cute female reaper training under Death, you expect her to be a bit like Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho.
But then she flips it on her head, she's wholesome, yet crass when needed. She's calm and reserved and sweet, yet an absolute raging fire that engulfs those who stand against her. She fires killshots when she sees the need, and helps other's grow and is supportive where it matters.
She's such a deep individual, not just from a character perspective, but also regarding the woman behind the character as well.
She takes that "SNES beat" you talk about and turns it into something to really think about, which yeah I get where you're coming from, it's poppy and up beat, but this is actually pretty common in Japanese circles, taking something cute and wholesome, and flipping it on it's head. [See Madoka Magica and how being a magical girl is fucking terrible as an example, there are many, many other examples in Japanese fiction however of this kind of thing.] You can look at stuff like Vocaloid's Hatsune Miku and a lot of the content created with the vocaloid software that's very up beat, but also very, VERY dark in themes.

This song was specifically made to sound like Rap mixed with traditional Japanese music and because she's personally a fan of lots of the Japanese producers she gets to work with and is proud to be able to use her position to give them more exposure too

I have been looking forward to my SFJ analysis since I saw this video drop.
The song is for those lazy "vtubers" who has been hating Calli ever since that video of her advise for aspiring vtubers. This is the diss track we need.
Also jean, the aesthetic of the beat is a resemblance of some traditional japanese instruments, around the times when samurias and ninjas are still prominent to the country. The beat really fits the theme of slaying people before they can see what's coming.
My favorite part of the song was when she called out the Twitter haters. Of course they got made but it proved her point. Feels good to be a fan of Calli.

I'm just going to put this out here I don't know how much begging we the fans may have to do but I would love to see our boy and calliope do an interview I think the brainstorming that could come from that kind of interaction could bring us such beautiful collaborations and inspiration but then again it's all up to hololive so I asked you what should we do because we all know Calliope has great potential but I would love to see what would be born for more of her doing interviews with other musicians not collabs but interviews I do see that it could be a problem down the road if controversy happens but the grand scheme of things the idea is born from such interactions could be worth selling yourself for a soul for
