The genius of the Fast Show is that most of these characters start as just a single catch phrase or gimic, but over the course of time become incredibly deep and moving.
They all most certainly did. So simple, yet so delightful. This show was a masterclass of humor and classic characters. Loved it deeply, it was sensational. 😂🤣👌👍
Bloody hell not for the first time this show makes me howl with laughter and cry at the end brilliant writing. The cheer at the end when competitive dad finally breaks down is so sad. We all see bits of this in our own lives.
It would have been tempting to have the boy siding with his grandfather to have revenge on his competitive dad. Delighted to see they went the other way ❤
Competitive Dad was not nice to his sons, but his own father was no better. But, you felt bad for Competitive Dad, especially the way his father treated him and he was spoiling Christmas. It was the first time Competitve Dad was proud of his son for standing up for him.
It's very close to some families: dysfunctional fathers bringing-up dysfunctional sons, who in their turn bring-up dysfunctional sons. I've met men just like this - everything was wrong, nothing ever good enough. Cold, quick to criticise, heartless.
I don't think anyone gained any self awareness here nor was that what it was about - just an observation of how behaviour gets passed down the generations. I don't think anyone was the bad guy here either. It is what it is.

Yes yes, the humour is almost.... Black.....

I still catch my breath when I watch the last Rowley Birkin QC 😢

Fast Show always struck the perfect balance between humour and pathos. Classic 90s sketch show.
Simon Day is criminally underrated. Fantastic actor and comedian.
😂

Always get choked up when he says “don’t talk to him like that! He’s your son!”

the last scene really got me...poor dad

Brilliant writing. My favourite of the Fast Show characters .. and this scene was genius. Still remember watching it for the first time.

"If you carve like that these two will grow up to be Nancy boys" hahaha
I love comedy when the end scenes show the 'comedy bad guy/fool' gaining some self-awareness and realizing his awful behavior.

Best competitive dad ever.

@ianmangham4570 no more good sketch shows like that anymore mate . I'm an Aussie, still have all the box set on DVD. It's a relic, haha.
Oafs and the tree. Brilliant.
lol Rory Jennings as toby
Ron's dad is brilliant.
The look of abject resentment on his face at 2:20 .Classic !
Therapists could use this!
Dark and touching
Well in Toby!
Rory Jennings
Class
Some of Mark Williams and Simon Days finest performances.
"No don't do it like that boy"!
It should be "Sins of the fathers" because Competitive Dad's behaviour and the way he treats his 2 sons he got from his own dad.
So good :)
the best! :))
Just sublime. The Fast Show was the absolute canine’s. 🥳💖
It's Rory Jennings!
Scalextric on Christmas morning?
I was that competitive Dad. 😬
Steptoe an Son unlimited
Awoah!
At 1:58 does he accidentally call him Simon (the actor's name) or is his son also called Simon?
Character is also called Simon. The wife calls him that in the painting sketch as well
3:32 LOL
Daniel Williamson why type lol?
Cos it's funny.
The truth is, Strawberry Unicorn, he's usually horrible to his kids and it's the first time he said that he loves one of his kids.
