There are plenty of gay actors playing straight characters and vice versa. It’s not the fact that it’s labeling the actors down and limiting their character roles. To be fair, that is also the case in Lili's own memoir and other trans stories from the time. Now, that is definitely something that can be questioned, as the memoir was largely written, rewritten and edited by cis men and contains many factual inaccuracies and trans people were pushed to separate their male and female identities in order to be able to access medical care. So while problematic, it's not something that's entirely made up by the film. It's just a very complex issue that this entirely cis creative team couldn't do justice.
@ivel1os Nope. How many trans roles are there in movies? What are you gonna do if they say straight cis roles should be done by straight cis actors? I personally think that his opinion about trans actors needing more representatipn is totally true, but there's no reason to regret taking this part because Lily's character in this movie requires to be embodied by a man. Additionally, I doubt that there would be any trans men that would take the part of a woman, since being and looking like a woman has made them uncomfortable and dysphoric. Doing such a movie wouldn't be a nice experience for these people since it would remind them of their days full of struggle and sorrow. Also, in my opinion I don't care if an actor or actress can relate to their character as in person, as long as they feel it and become their character and embody them perfectly, then the casting was perfect too.
His opinion on more trans actors is appreciated but I dont think a transitioned woman would be comfortable playing the scenes where Lily was presenting as male
Laverne Cox didn’t have an issue. An openly trans person may love to do these roles, but you won’t know who is and isnt comfortable doing that until you invite the people movies are representing a seat at the table 🤷♀️
A fully transitioned person would already present female and likely been surgically/hormonally altered and thus unable to portray the transitioning process that occured to a bio male in this time period. The backwards thinking and attempts to emotionally protect or apologize to the flimsy trans ideology is astonishingly easy to topple with simple logic. No Eddie, you don't owe the self-deluded any reparations. I'd argue the film should never have been made as mental illness shouldn't be glorified by Hollywood, which is an industry notoriously devoid of moral fiber and altruistic intent.
It could be played by someone non-binary.... just someone who doesn't identify as cis-gender as he said. I don't think it was bad casting at all, I think he simply wants to support that rolls be offered to others that could represent the character in a different way. Unfortunately this is simply a problem with Hollywood needing big names attached to a film in order to receive funding.
That is actually so amazing he said that because it’s true but he did so good and amazing!! Pose the tv show is amazing because it’s a show about transgender women played by actual transgender women
Si esa pelicula no hubiese sido protagonizada por Eddie no hubiese sido tan buena. Si bien, el argumento es excepcional, Eddie le puso el alma y el cuerpo.❤
Honestly I think he did wonderfully. Never would've seen it without him in it. And, just as I'm uncomfortable being asked to portray a female when I don't want to as an ftm person, a trans woman may not be comfortable playing a man on screen when something so closely resembles thier story. This movie made me cry and looking into all the research and time Eddie Redmayne took with trans people to understand us and everything he did for this role. I agree more trans actors should get to play trans characters, but Redmayne went above and beyond and I truly believe he deserved the award he got for the movie.
It's called acting for a reason. I remember Jared Leto playing an amazing character (trans/gay dying of aids) and he brought so much vivacious charisma to the character that you immediately fell in love. And sometimes, in order to bring attention to an issue you need someone with a big name behind it. Imagine if a Trans person wanted to play a straight character, and they earned the role and are made to feel ashamed because they're not the gender they're portraying. It's bizarre.
i get what he is saying but he did an incredible job - reminded me of glen close’s performance in albert nobbs. some trans actors want to portray cisgender people too and so i think what he did was a beautiful representation of a trans character despite his own gender identity.
This doesn’t make sense though… There are countless LGBTQ actors who play straight characters. There are countless straight actors who play gay characters… the actors are chosen for their ability to act not based on their sexuality or gender. This is so dumb I feel like Eddie was pressured to say this so he doesn’t fall in the cancel train..
He say that cause there was members of the trans community that have said straight people stole trans role... just after the release of the movie. But a vast majority of the community has really appreciate his portrayal of the character...
For me it's not that's he saying he can't play the part. Any actor can play any part and do it well with enough skill and preparation. It comes down to whether or not one should. He as a cis actor is benefitting from telling a trans story and it does not benefit the community that story is from as much as it would if instead the role were given to a trans actor. There is the point of making people out themselves in order to play a part or write a story they personally connect to. That, to an extent, we may prohibit others from exploring or connecting to others experiences. It's not a "black and white" issue. There is a truth, however, that trans people are marginalized and can be empowered by being allowed to tell their own stories and that, for now, I think wins out over the truth that any actor can play any part.
As I read the comments I can see two sides of the coin. One says we should encourage only lgbt people the play the roles. The other says it doesn’t matter what you are because the purpose of an actor is to act. I say fuck what people say, allow the writer to decide if an lgbt actor or a cis actor transmits the emotion the best. Judging by the fact that the story is from the writer, I assume that person has the right to decide who will interpret it. A character is a character and inside its story it doesn’t matter anything that has to do with the real person who’s behind it. My point is, trans people and cis people can be great actors but the writer has the final word. If the writer chooses a cis person for the role I don’t think they should be criticized for it, they literally fucking wrote an entire story dedicated to a trans character, so it not like they are AGAINST trans representation bruhh. Whether you like it or not this movie has changed the lives of many people already and the same would have happened if a trans person had interpreted it. Wasn’t the purpose of the lgbt community was to normalize different sexualities? Why are you making it matter so much when it comes to a career? Isn’t it supposed to “not matter”? “Oh you’re straight so that means you aren’t capable of interpreting a gay character!” “Oh you’re a trans girl so that means you can’t interpret a boy!” Like I said, allow the writer to decide independently of the actor’s sexuality
Hot take, I think he did exactly what he was suppose to do. I’m a trans woman and As unfortunate as it is that due to the systemic culture we live in it takes a cis-gender person to bring about awareness of Trans people, but that just demonstrates them as an ally and doing their part to bring about awareness.l and our struggle, battles and hardships. I’m thankful he did it. If he’s genuinely concerned about success from a financial stand point, then maybe a portion of his earnings he could also donate to Trans communities and support systems and suicide prevention programs for trans people. And maybe he did! I don’t know, but he shouldn’t feel guilty.
Oh please. That movie could not have been made with a trans actor! It just couldn’t. He was a regular man for most of the film. There was plenty of full frontal nudity. Top and bottom. A regular Man played the role because the role called for a regular man. He did a great job. I hat that he’s not even allowed to acknowledge that.
I think though that he had such a major role in bringing trans films and stories into the limelight, with a wave of progression, acceptance, and excitement towards seeing more like it.
Representation is representation. I would rather have a brilliant performance that gains recognition for my community than a subpar one that gets ignored. The Whale was an insight on the struggles of obesity and depression. Not a harmful depiction because Brendan Frazier wasn’t either. Neither lead in Brokeback Mountain was gay, but no one demanded justice for their performance because of it. Appreciate the stories being told. If you continue to demand asterisks and exceptions and exclusive treatment, you’ll find yourself excluded and ignored.
But that basically what acting is. Putting yourself in the skin of other and represent it by “lying” is not a matter of representation is a matter of skill.
So what you are saying is that you should not hire the one that do the best work, but the more diverse one, Right? He did a good job and if anyone want that opportunity, It should had worked harder to get it, simple as that. And is not about transphobic because if that was the problem this movie would not have being made to begin with. He has great skill, and he makes a great movie he should be proud of instead now he has to be asame for it for doing a great job @ivel1os
Very few trans people actually care. It doesnt make sense to have a fully transitioned trans person play a PRE-TRANSITIONED character. The Danish Girl is a beautiful film, which probably helped a little of trans people feel seen.
I disagree. He started off as Einar and then became Lili, so the role fits better than it would have fit most trans women. It is true that there's a lack of roles for trans people, though, which is an issue and should be changed.
Sia gay...trans...fluido o il cavolo che uno e' Eddie e' un attore magnifico ...in ogni personaggio chd interpreta🥰questo fa un vero attore😜tra l'altro quando canta e' da brividi❤lo ADORO!!! Punto.
I think this movie would not have been green lit if it didn’t have star power. Acting is almost always about someone who is not yourself. Only blondes play blondes, only people with mental illness can play the mentally ill. Only athletes play athletes. I understand the foundation of the argument but the answer might be to lift LGBTQ into ordinary rolls they don’t have to be typecast due to being transgender. I should think a trans person might even be offended thinking “so I got this roll due to being trans?”
Not really a transgender role - the movie depicts this character in the process of transitioning, from 100% male. Finding a >good< trans actress who could fit the appearance could be difficult, not to speak of the dysphoria she could feel playing it.
His interview makes no sense. Your watching a man play the role of transitioning. So why have the trans play the role? They already transitioned. He’s telling a story. I swear some people are just dumb.
He got the role due to his acting skills and he knows it but people can’t see that. He prefers to be mature about it and say you guys are right just so you leave him alone. Literally judging him by his identity when y’all defend people shouldn’t be judged for it.
Its called acting for a reason! Chris Hemsworth isn't actually the God of thunder. Owen Wilson isn't actually a car. Olivia coleman isn't actually the queen. Morgan freeman isn't actually god! You don't have to be what your portraying when your an actor, many a time in acting men have played women and women have played men. Look at the Shakespeare plays from centuries ago!
But trans actors can't play trans stories! You can't just "go back" on your transition for a movie... all those changes are irreversible and incredibly obvious even if tou try to disguise them. You would have to do what Laverne Cox did in Orange Is The New Black: she has a twin brother, so her twin played the "before transition" bits of the series... THAT makes sense.

“Oh you’re straight so that means you aren’t capable of interpreting a gay character!”
“Oh you’re a trans girl so that means you can’t interpret a boy!”
Like I said, allow the writer to decide independently of the actor’s sexuality
Or he could donate to something more important to like cancer research or help starving kids in Africa
I love Eddie 💞😻😻
He actually ate
Bro has to pander bc people get upset over anything
Representation is representation. I would rather have a brilliant performance that gains recognition for my community than a subpar one that gets ignored.
The Whale was an insight on the struggles of obesity and depression. Not a harmful depiction because Brendan Frazier wasn’t either. Neither lead in Brokeback Mountain was gay, but no one demanded justice for their performance because of it.
Appreciate the stories being told. If you continue to demand asterisks and exceptions and exclusive treatment, you’ll find yourself excluded and ignored.
I love you Eddie ❤😊
He did a great job and should be proud of himself.
Honestly I don’t think many trans actors would be comfortable in the role anyways.
Incredible 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh god cry me a river.
Punto.
wow he is sweet
I think this movie would not have been green lit if it didn’t have star power. Acting is almost always about someone who is not yourself. Only blondes play blondes, only people with mental illness can play the mentally ill. Only athletes play athletes. I understand the foundation of the argument but the answer might be to lift LGBTQ into ordinary rolls they don’t have to be typecast due to being transgender. I should think a trans person might even be offended thinking “so I got this roll due to being trans?”
It has to be said
He was an excellent trans girl. But yes I believe there is room for trans girls in those types of performances.
Good for him
❤️❤️❤️❤️💯👍🏻
After they make the money, take the praises and win the awards they wish they had not done the work and played a role in the film. So childish.
he shouldn't have made this movie, he should have erased himself just like the boy that erased himself in Boy Erased.
But he looked good😢
Regrets after succumbing to the woke mod 😂 .that's like saying sorry with a gun forced on you..really isn't sincere 🥱
Thank u !
He got the role due to his acting skills and he knows it but people can’t see that. He prefers to be mature about it and say you guys are right just so you leave him alone.
Literally judging him by his identity when y’all defend people shouldn’t be judged for it.
@@emilie8356 🥱🤡🤡
Lol. He omly says it cause of the idiots
So... now... what means to act... no longer been got the habilities to represent other people and another stories?
Can’t name one trans actor
Laverne Cox as Sophia Burset from Orange is the New Black.
@@lawrencewalston2272 bit late. I’m become aware of quite a few in the last 9 months
So goofy. That’s what you do bro, you act. 🙄
Its almost like him saying because he's never going to be newt scamander in fantastic beasts because he wants more roles to go to wizards

Really
But trans actors can't play trans stories! You can't just "go back" on your transition for a movie... all those changes are irreversible and incredibly obvious even if tou try to disguise them. You would have to do what Laverne Cox did in Orange Is The New Black: she has a twin brother, so her twin played the "before transition" bits of the series... THAT makes sense.
tons of trans people haven’t medically transitioned… it’s extremely expensive and invasive
He shouldn't make Harry Potter's movies because he is not a real wizard.
He shouldn't regret it all i am trans and loved his portayal of lilly
