    I had the parts on hand, I built this, and it works! I used IRF9540 and IRF540, TIP120 and MJE3055. Now can you tell me, why do you need to make essentially a "triple Darlington?" Is that much gain really necessary? Thanks.

    • @LewisLoflin
      @LewisLoflin  2 года назад +1

      With switching one wants gain. You drive the transistors into saturation. Also I happened to have the parts. This is a lesson in transistor switching as much as being a h-bridge. Given you much to think about? You get an A for the class.

    Nice video. One question. If both inputs are low, motor leads are shorted to ground, thus braking. But when both inputs high, both lead also shorted to +ve, i thought that would also brake the motor the same way it does when both inputs low?

    • @LewisLoflin
      @LewisLoflin  6 лет назад

      I think it will break in a way. From what I've read it adds energy back to the system.

      if both low the braking takes time but if both high the brake is fast and good.

    Hi sir ...thanks a lot for your great support...I used IRF9450 for high side and 630 for low side ...result was painful and in all condition short circuit was happening...rds of p mos should be 2 times mor than n mos to prevent this situation...but in mor rds cases we have less current ...so can I keeps remain 9450 and parallel 4 630 to have more current?

    Hi Lewis, great video. I have a question, with both sides of the motor connected to +12V, wont this act as a break in the same way as connecting both to GND. As both sides are basically just connected to each other but via the +12V rail instead of GND?

    • @LewisLoflin
      @LewisLoflin  2 года назад

      I think ground is break and +Vcc feeds power back to the supply.

    • @ChrisPavey85
      @ChrisPavey85 2 года назад

      @@LewisLoflin With both of the motor terminals connected to the same potential, whatever that is +12V or GND or anything in-between. then the back EMF would cause a breaking effect. I guess you could reproduce this by shorting a motor with a piece of wire and connecting that to the 12V terminal of a battery and see if the motor still resists turning. I think that it will.

    • @LewisLoflin
      @LewisLoflin  2 года назад

      Chris has it right. Any time you connect the two motor leads to the same potential, whether it be 0V or 1000V, you will get the same braking effect.

    • @LewisLoflin

    Nice video. I guess there is a typo and you are actually using an IRF9630 as your pmos transistor. I'm not sure why you are not bootstrapping the pmos transistors. As shown, if you want to generate a -10V Vgs (required to get the 0.8 Ohm Rdson), you need to drop this in Rg dissipating a lot of power (100 / Rg Watts). The power dissipated by a bootstrap circuit after it initially charges up is only a little more than that required to charge and discharge the gate capacitance. In addition, switching times will be faster with a bootstrap because you don't have the relatively large Rg as part of the time constant...

    • @toddhoustein
      @toddhoustein 2 года назад

      I'm yet to come across an H bridge circuit with bootstrapping of P channel high side FETs. It isn't required to achieve the desired gate voltage. Not sure about the switching time. Is that an issue?

    • @toddhoustein
      @toddhoustein 2 года назад

      With supply voltage of 12V and Rgs 10k, power used by the resistor is 1000 times that.

    • @ats89117
      @ats89117 2 года назад +1

      It depends on how much power the motor is dissipating. If the motor is dissipating a lot of power or if you don't care about efficiency, then the circuit is fine. If the motor isn't dissipating much power and you are interested in efficiency, you will need to use a reasonably large Rgs and this will lead to slow turn on for the nmos transistors based on the time constant from Rgs and the combined gate capacitances. But you're right in the sense that the circuit is simple and will be fine for almost all applications.

    When I try to run this circuit there is no voltage difference between motors poles. How can I fix it?

    • @LewisLoflin
      @LewisLoflin  5 лет назад

      It won't be unless the two inputs differ. As they normally operate with no input to either side both are switched to ground. So no difference in voltage across poles. Same if both are switched on.
