  • With little competition and few predators, the Brown Trout in New Zealand has been known to grow to epic proportions. These prize fish sometimes reaching a metre in length and weighing up to 5 kilos have developed monstrous appetites and a bloody thirsty penchant for Mice.

Bailey Green where in the video do you see a trout devouring/eating a mouse? The only thing that trout went for was the fishing hook, yes the guy used fur to imitate a mouse not the real thing plus his bate was tiny not even close to the size of the mouse you see in the video. Good thing the guy let the trout go otherwise it would've been munched on not the mouse.🐁

They do eat mice. Every so many years there is a natural bloom of mice in certain parts of NZ. They do swim, so the trout catch and eat them during these bloom years.
There are often so many mice around that cats, glutted, ignore them.

One invasive species preying on another. I suppose it's some sort of remedy.
Yet, the angler returned the fish to its stream, where it will no doubt reproduce, making more invasive trout.

I can’t speak for all of New Zealand but the fish in this river system look to be hatchery stocked trout which are often bred to be sterile to minimize environmental impacts so it’s unlikely these fish can reproduce and will just die out with time. Plus this is a trophy fishery and they’re usually heavily managed and it’s considered customary and proper etiquette for fishermen to let trophy specimens like this one go.
