Vanity, Denise Katrina Matthews, unfortunately passed away the day after Valentine's Day 2016 in a little town called Fremont CA from kidney failure. I'm not sure why this piece didn't mention that seeing as how it was published that year. I had met her a few years prior when I was still living in Oakland as I passed by the church she was giving sermon at. She was a great lady she treated me kindly even though it was my first time she made me feel very welcome. In the middle of her sermon, she came up and hugged me and started dancing with me. I don't know how she knew it was my first time there. I'm told that it was a special event that she was even preaching there that morning. After the service, I was able to talk to her for a good hour or so as they fed me fried chicken and macaroni in the basement. I asked her why she didn't do music anymore just because she was sober now? I asked her if she could she couldn't separate the two without falling off the wagon again? It made me sad for her that she didn't still get to perform and create music. I personally don't know what I would do if I couldn't have that outlet. Coincidentally, I was living in that shithole town and did not know she was actually on life support just down the road at Washington hospital. All I knew was that she was on dialysis when I met her and that she did stay in Fremont CA. I asked her if she was staying at MC Hammer's old place up on the hill and she laughed. I wish I could have visited her and thanked her for making me feel so welcome that morning. I hope she wasn't alone when she passed and I hope she's at peace now.
