I'm so enjoying these 'Best fish n chips' videos. Has to be my absolute favourite food to eat. I remember going to Steeles in Cleethorpes market place as a treat when I was a kid. I also remember getting a bag of cockles and walking the beach with my Nan eating them out of the paper bag
Only thing,Tim...its not a good fish n chip meal for me unless I make a chip butty (I still do this at home)...and I must admit, I'm a haddock girl🤭🤭

In my experience, there are no best fish and chip shops- only some that do it better. You cannot judge them like hotels. The differences are based on personal preference rather than fundamentals like cleanliness and extreme price differences (Heston Blumenthal and his ilk excepted). As with a full English Breakfast-some people will enjoy the greasy spoon, others the Dorchester. Unfortunately, much that made our collective memory of "Fish and Chips" is actually gone. For example Oils that were "unhealthier" but tastier, for example- batter cooked in beef dripping. And chips in 99% of shops are soft on the outside-they should be crisp with a soft filling. A good metaphor is the difference between oven fries and chips peeled and fried in a deep fat frier at home. Oven fries are far more convenient, clean, cheap...but those 70's chips your mum made were better, weren't they?

Place looked good, but portions very small.....and expensive! Here in Pontefract we still use beef dripping in our chippies, and my choice is Icelandic haddock, never been frozen, only chilled! At a fair price.....no chef's hats though hahaha!

You actually can judge them. Weatherspoons have loads of room for improvement for example. They can start by learning to cook chips properly.

Rick Steins in Padstow is horrendously over-priced and pretty poor.
Trenchers has always been spot on when I've been there but the mushy peas are not great, which is why i never have them. But there's lots of good chippies in Whitby (Hadleys, Abbey Wharf, Silver St, Fish Box). The Magpie is brilliant to eat in but the takeaway is not great.

That was a good review, at least you are realistic regarding your reviews ,, brings to mind the individual who posted about Poppies in London called it " the best fish and chips in the U.K ". I did challenge that, seems like that particular individual had never been to Scotland.
I did eat at Poppies ,, to state that they are overrated and ridiculously overpriced is an understatement !

I might actually make it to Whitby sometime, so this is useful. It's also making me excited because I just made a dinner reservation at our local Irish pub for tomorrow night. It's a really nice place. They literally shipped authentic antique bars from Ireland for the interior. It's beautiful and they have amazing fish and chips.
I'm so lucky to have a great place for fish and chips in Charlotte, North Carolina. It's usually so abysmal in the US that I'm afraid to chance it.
If you every make it to Edinburgh I hope you will give Bertie's Prop Fish & Chips a try. I assumed it would be a mediocre tourist trap but it was some of the best I've had.

I ate in a restaurant over the bridge as too busy and it was about 10 pounds with tea and buttered bread (pre covid) and it was amazing. The touristy restaurants like this and magpies are over hyped i think (maybe they were better when they had to try harder or the good chef just moved on). Oh and the portion size was better, wish I could remember the name of the restaurant.

Whenever someone mentions the name Whitby, it reminds me of another seaside town, called Whitstable, near Ramsgate. When you was in Clacton on sea Tim, not far from the amusements, in the town centre, opposite McDonald’s, and next to the bank, is a great Fish & Chip shop. I’m not sure if it’s still there. The last time I was there was July 2011, with my Mum and Sister, on a day out.

Tim love your videos, oh you in best place in uk here for chippys, please review the magpie and quayside just up the road, James Martin eats at The Magpie and it my favourite too, Mary Berry likes the Quayside, I like it too but prefer the Magpie, my next visit I shall try fish shop you just been to. Can I just say Tim your plate looked rather empty to me surely it not too much trouble or expense to fill the big empty space on your plate with more chips, the lemon could have been placed on top of the fish giving more room for more chips. Tim the Magpie is going to blow you away try it.

I have said it before Tim, i didnt like this chip shop when the wife and i visited. Both the cod and haddock was too soft, we found the batter average as you did, our chips were nothing special either. maybe we caught them at a bad time, it was a monday in winter about 7.30pm 2yrs ago, and very quiet, it tasted like our food had been under the warmer for a while and fish not cooked fresh (which was probably the case) but having spent over £30 and wishing we had'nt bothered we wont be going back. i would have given it 4/10 based on my experience, and think your 7/10 generous. as for the top rating in whitby, it didn't come close for me, and i've tried loads there over the years, but thanks for the review anyway.

@@WalkWithMeTim i said it on your post t'other day, but next time you are in Whitby, get a takeout from Mr Chips and pop into the Endeavour next door for a decent pint of hand pulled ale with it. they welcome you and have vinegar, salt and tomato ketchup as well if you want it. It's half the price of trenchers, 5 mins walk away, and a much better deal and experience in a proper pub. cheers
