  • For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA protector -"Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" (Tim Allen),"Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver) and"Dr.Lazarus" (Alan Rickman) - set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space...and then their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for"historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.
    Key moments
Actors: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Robin Sachs, Patrick Breen, Missi Pyle, Jed Rees

@@AwesomeUSMovies Tony Shalub also said in an interview that his concept for the character was that he was stoned the entire time. Watching the interviews with the cast and crew for Galaxy Quest is almost as much fun as the actual movie was. They were all a bunch of super talented people at the top of their game and had an absolute blast with the movie. Other fun facts are that in the original version of the movie Sigourney Weavers character is swearing the entire time and you can in fact see in the scene when they get to the chompers that she actually says "Oh fuck this" which was dubbed over with "Oh screw this" after the fact. They decided to make the movie PG-13 so she had to come back in and re-dub or re-shoot many of her lines and scenes. The real star of the show though was Enrico Colantoni who played Malthesar. They didn't really know how to do the Thermians but Enrico Colantoni came up with several quirks that he used during his audition for how they should be played. The directors loved his interpretation of the Thermians so much they immediately cast him and then showed his audition tape to all the other people auditioning to play Thermians and basically told them "do this, this right here is what we want" which is VERY much not how auditions are normally run.

Rickman came to like him better after that scene because he could see he really did come to work.

This movie isn’t a rip off. A rip off is when someone takes someone else’s ideas and creations and claims it as their own original thing. That’s just straight up stealing. This movie is more of a parody/homage to Star Trek. If you ask almost any Trekkie about this movie they will say how much they loved it, mainly because you can tell how much the makers loved the original show and, although it’s a comedy, they were treating it seriously. Great movie on many levels.

This movie starts with the premise that it is a long discontinued show and the devoted fans still care for it (kinda like Firefly) and how it is for the actors long time after show stopped, with conventions and enjoying still some popularity etc and is this exact aspect about conventions etc and the meta of the ensemble cast post show that intrigued, entertained and won the love of Star Trek show alumni actors plus a simple rip-off would never have been voted among best Star Trek movies made, scoring higher even than some of the movies that were legitimately part of the franchise. For a long time, I wondered why no one but the two captains remembered what happened prior to activating the Omega 13, and thought it was a plot hole. But you saying, "He's shooting everyone!" fixed it for me- everyone but Nesmith, Mathesar, and Guy were dead before Nesmith gave the order to activate the Omega 13. And Guy was too busy screaming the entire time to notice.

That's a perfectly reasonable explanation. Here's the one I went with: Jason Nesmith and Mathesar are the only ones who remember, because only those two characters were involved in 'ACTIVATING' the Omega-13 (Mathesar 'primes' it, somehow, and Jason presses the 'GO!' button.) So... the device 'knows' who turned it on, and sends those two people back 13 seconds into the past. No one else remembers, because no one else touched (or had a role in interfacing with) the device.

The germ of this movie came from a Star Trek fan story called "Visit to a Weird Planet" and its sequel "Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited." Someone had read those and after decades fronted the idea and produced a script. The producers stayed out of hot water with Paramount with some clever things like the serial number on the ship. The prefix is NTE for "not the Enterprise." There is a special on RUclips on the making of Galaxy Quest and it is well worth watching. Oh, and Galaxy Quest was up for the Hugo Award in 2000 against some very tough competition that included The Matrix, Sixth Sense, and another major movie. GALAXY QUEST WON! The combination of humor and pathos and drama and comedy was unbeatable.

He was also the scriptwriter behind classic movies like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", so when the book was optioned for a movie, he was the perfect choice to write the movie script. As a result, the movie has the same great feel as the book. It's the best adaptation of book to movie I know.

Such a fun look at "Star ****" fandom and Sci-Fi convention culture. It's always refreshing when one can laugh self-deprecatingly, and I feel that this movie accomplishes that without insult. I've been a Trekkie since the early '70s, and even though I've never attended any of the conventions, I feel this movie captures the spirit of them (or at least how I imagine they are). The conflicting "personalities" among actors when not in character, the "diva" complex of some actors, the over-memed and cliche "catch phrases", the in-universe tech & techno-babble lines (which are mere gibberish in the real world) and which becomes "canon reality" to be seriously considered and debated as "science", can all be connected to actual examples in well-known Sci-Fi franchises.

His hate for saying the “By Grabthar’s hammer” line was a reflection of Leonard Nimoy’s dislike for his “Live long and prosper” quote because it was like the line had become very cliched and the only thing his character was remembered for. These days, I'd settle for a "Basic Cable TV series," free of the usual excesses and THE MESSAGE of streaming services. Note: Sigorurney Weaver stipulated that she would be a Blonde in this movie. She said that she could feel her IQ dropping every time she wore the wig...all the way home.;) Tony Shalhoub has been in the TV series "Monk" and many movies; his character is on an MJ high through the movie. The "Brandon" character was Justin Long's first major movie role. This movie can be enjoyed by anyone, which is proof of that this is a Classic.
Staying in 1999, take a look at "The Iron Giant" and/or "October Sky," two 1957-Sputnik Era tales. The former animated feature asks if a Gun has a Soul and can decide NOT to be a weapon of destruction. The latter is the tale of Coal Town teens hoping to see the world outside, launching model rockets, one at a time. (A look at the early life of Homer Hickam, Jr., NASA scientist.)

While back then we knew what we'd been given and were thankful for its legacy, now it seems that what's being made is almost all extremely "empty" and forgetful. The past was supposed to serve as inspiration, not as a crutch to hold a dying industry.

The thing is, even if you are not familiar with the tropes, the movie explains enough for you to understand them. You get that Guy was an extra in the show only to be there to be killed. That's the 'Redshirt' trope from Star Trek. In the original Star Trek show, when they went to a planet they had a number of people from security with them and they were only to be there to be killed off. The security staff always wore red shirts. In the original show they were the only ones wearing red shirts. In the later Star Trek shows they changed the colours of the shirt and mixed it up story wise so that it wasn't predictable any more.
But you don't have to know that to understand that Guy was an extra to be killed off and feared that now he was about to be killed off for real. That's the joke in the movie. If you know the trope and are a fan, you appreciate it, but it doesn't make it more or less funny.
And yes, people dress up like from movies and shows on conventions. Some of them are quite serious about it and factor in any detail no matter how minor. And yes, there are fans that have mapped out the ships and understand the fictional science behind the technology in these shows and movies and notice if there are discrepancies in them.
In short, you have missed nothing. You just can't appreciate it like fans do.
That's part of the genius of this movie.

Both parody and homage to the genre and to a whole nerd community. Now conventions like this are considered cool. In my day it was practically the definition of being a nerd.

Tony Shalhoub was in many TV shows and movies… he's mostly known for the main role of "Monk"(2000-2009), some movies… "Men In Black"(1997), "Spy Kids", "Thirteen Ghosts" and "The Man Who Wasn't There"(all 2001) and MORE!! 😉😉

Rickman you recognized from HP and Die Hard. Two other great but lesser known roles were in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood as the Sheriff of Notingham and the evil rancher in Quigley Down Under. He made for a great bad guy. He was also funny in a movie called Dogma, but that movie wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

What I love about this is that in the end the were saved by the fans themselves. I think that is one of many reasons why we Trekkies appreciate it.

idk if anyone already said, and I'm not done with the video yet, but the one guy is Tony Shalhoub, best known for TV's Monk. Apparently they originally wrote and filmed that his character was stoned all the time, but had to cut a lot of it out for ratings. If you watch the scene the first time the crew gets sent to the ship in the goo stuff, he isn't freaked out and smoke comes out of his pod.
