  • Join David Lama from advanced basecamp to summit on his successful solo push for the first ascent of Lunag Ri, a previously unclimbed peak of 6.907meters on the borderline between Nepal and Tibet. On 23 October 2018 the Austrian with Nepali heritage set out carrying a POV camera and was followed by a drone navigated from advanced BC.
    Check out the documentary "David Lama & Conrad Anker walk the line“ on the dramatic happenings during the 2015 & 2016 attempts on Lunag Ri: • Lunag Ri - David Lama ...

    This climb, with some of the sections he's traversing or climbing are comparable with Alex Honnold's free soloing The Nose on El Capitan, for the amount of risk, exposure, definitely worthy of Piolet D'Or. Spectacular drone and action camera footage. That's a special piece of real estate up there, freezing cold but magical.

    • @mpreiss7780
      @mpreiss7780 5 лет назад

      Both were fantastic achievements but come on, free soloing el cap was way more impressive. Not to take anything away from Lama's climb but he did self belay. the comparison of the two is difficult just because they are totally different types of climbing

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 5 лет назад

      I disagree, let's not forget that Alex Honnold has trained 2 or so years for that climb, during which he'd climbed 50 times roped. They both have blue bird skies, but Lama had 6900meters altitude and perhaps -30 degrees Celsius. Lama didn't use pro during some sections, like the traverse of that steep slope, as per the video. Both of these climbs are as deadly as any climbs can be. With a bullet to my head, I would perhaps choose the bullet, for either climbs, but then again, I am not the best in the world in either fields, so I can enjoy watching Free Solo, and waiting for a movie on Lunag Ri I hope. Cheers

    • @mpreiss7780
      @mpreiss7780 5 лет назад

      @@AdrianCalgary well I'll just say that in my best years of climbing I would have a slim chance climbing Lama's route but their's no way in hell I could even think of trying to free solo el cap. What Lama did was fantastic but those kind of routes have been done many times and for a long time. Also Alex has been training for that climb for 10+ years.

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 5 лет назад

      @@mpreiss7780 Those kind of routes have been done many times before? At almost 7000 meters? I doubt it. Can you give examples?

    • @AdrianCalgary
      @AdrianCalgary 5 лет назад

      @@mpreiss7780 I see a comparable climb, as I've mentioned, simply because Alex Honnold have memorized his route and used speed and endurance to climb it, while David Lama finished up the previously twice attempted route, solo, this time, which requires different skills but as strenuous and risky, considering the altitude for the latter. There is a visible rope on that traverse I've mentioned, but a fall would not necessarily would've been safe enough for it. A solo ascent at 6900 meters in this type of terrain is as exhilarating as the free solo of The Nose, in my opinion. I did watch the movie Free Solo in a theatre, and it's similar to any other free solo climbs of Honnold found on youtube. The face of the former World Champion talks about how demanding this ascent was, and he's only half way. Every cell in his body must've screamed "Oxygen! I need Oxygen". Honnold's free solo was a mental game of a super fit athlete.
