- I have been excited to make this video for a long time and it kicks off a short series of 991 exhaust videos that will complete my car's overall exhaust upgrade. In this episode we unbox and take a look at the new headers that just arrived from Soul Performance as well walking and talking through their features. We also get my 911 up on the lift to look at the stock headers that are currently attached to the Soul PP Valved Exhaust system I had installed late last year.
Finally, it wouldn't be an exhaust video without listening to it. We do a quick side by side comparison of my original factory exhaust set-up, against the current set up which includes the factory headers and the Soul PP valved exhaust. The difference between stock and the today is incredible and now I can't wait to extend the comparison further in a future video in this series once the headers get installed. Let's do this!!

Soul Performance Products 991.1 Long Tube Street Headers are built around large diameter, free flowing HJS 200-cell catalytic converters with long tube runners for maximum gains in power, throttle response, and flat-six engine tone.

DEVELOPMENT & SOUND: The factory header design is a very simple, mass produced component not suited for performance. By creating a unique application for the 991.1 platform, we’ve focused on sizing the runners (2”) correctly to extract maximum power from the 3.8L engine while producing great gains from the 3.4L as well.
POWER: Verified independent dyno testing at Apex Autowerks on a Mustang dyno revealed real, repeatable peak gains of 9 whp and 13 ft-lbs of torque with a noticeable improvement in the mid RPM range, well over 25 whp and ft-lbs of torque at 3,000 RPM for a boost where you’ll be at most during normal driving. Even greater power can be realized with an ECU tune, especially after 5,000 RPM where adjusting timing would make a significant difference.
CONSTRUCTION: Each 991.1 header set is assembled out of T304L stainless steel. Merge spikes are incorporated to smooth exhaust flow into the collector and increase power. Thick water jet cut flanges cut to ISO 9001:2015 standards ensure perfect fitment and product longevity. Each exhaust is tested in a fixture to guarantee fitment and then foam packed to ensure they arrive in perfect condition.
HJS CATALYSTS: The highest quality catalytic converters available, known for their industry leading flow and durability. They are efficient enough to meet strict EURO 4 emission standards while still allowing for an increase in flow - all without a check engine light. The HD design uses premium triple foil winding for maximum strength. The brazing stripe is an extra feature in the interest of durability - it prevents the core from moving or experiencing any damage from sustained high horsepower abuse. We use a large and appropriately sized catalyst to allow for maximum gains - no compromises here!

Not sure how it compares with mine but I modified mine too but the car passed emission 2 weeks ago no problem in CA

I was so happy that I just got my Racing Yellow 991.1 back today after having the entire car detailed and finished with Ceramic Pro.....car looks amazing ! However.......I’ll now have to drop some more cash for that Soul exhaust, as I just can’t stand it any longer. I need to hear that flat six sound a little louder 👍👍

The best performance upgrade you can do, the HJS cats are quality, dont be surprised if they trigger the check engine light, but that can be fixed

Great video James! Once installed, I’d be curious to see how loud it is with the soul performance valved exhaust in ‘valves closed’ mode. I have a 991 C2 with an x-pipe, which i think is roughly equivalent. I am trying to remain on relatively good terms with my neighbors :)

Did you notice any performance gains with headers and exhaust or no? For example, did you get any better 0-60 times?
Not so much with the valved exhaust but there was a distinct power gain with the headers and the stage 2 tune I did with it. Really quite noticeable.

Respectfully we'd prefer not to compare against a competitor, but we're proud of our design and craftsmanship and back the headers with a lifetime warranty for street and track use - the first to do so. The midrange power gains will be quite beneficial to the daily driver and weekend racer alike. - Mike
Aren’t short tube sport headers better for low to mid-range torque which I believe 991.1 (both base & S) lacks of?
It depends on the design. The longer tube runners here allow for a much smoother entrance into the merge collector and a superior design of the merge collector itself raising efficiency across the board. They are particularly effective on the 991.1 in the midrange around 3,000 adding nearly 25 whp. -Mike

The install seems pretty straight forward. Curious as to why you didn't want to throw your "amateur" skills at it??
That’s a great question. I did think about doing it myself but if any of the factory bolts need cutting or there is even a slight degree of misalignment you can quickly get yourself into trouble.
What made you pick soul as opposed to fabspeed or another manufacturer ?
Great question!! It was quite fortuitous actually. I came across them with another friend, tried their product out on a 997 and loved it then tried it out again on my 991. It absolutely blew me away! Plus their customer service is excellent. There are other great products out there, but it’s like my first pair of sneakers. I just happened to buy the Nike Air Jordans and for years I would never wear another pair of kicks! 🤩
