Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Another great story, well told. We appreciate these bits of Scottish history tying to places outside of Scotland. I was raised in Ayrshire Scotland, but I lived in Kenmore, Washington state most of my adult life. We moved to the Skagit Valley when I retired, which is where we live now.
Enjoy Jimi, and keep the peat burning
I'm so happy you came to New Zealand. I've lived in Dunedin, and roamed all around that area. Great to have you here.
...and you didn't come to my show last week?
Lovely area visited relatives in Dunedin a few years back, but was quietly told I wasn't welcome in one pub because I was English, but eventually won them round when I advised them my friends in my local are Scots,English,Polish,Irish & African & my own heritage is all bits of the British Isles.
Anyway overall I found the people as great as the scenery.
About 3 minutes in, I looked at the date. Is this April 1st? Marmeduke Thweng? Bannockburn on the other side of the world?
Then I looked it up.
Brilliant story.
😜
Hell yeah! Another great video Bruce!!! I love when you put out new videos, can't wait for the next 1!!! 🇺🇸🏴
Yay
😂 got off Scot free!!! I really do love your stories Bruce, thanks again for the great video...
Glad you like them!
Loved these new facts! I read About sir Marmaduke Thweng in Robert Low’s novel ‘The Lion Rampant’. IT shows hoe complex characters, familie Ties and loyalties were in middle age conflicts. Keep telling your stories about real people of yore, you excell in iT!
Thanks for another well told bit of history. These stories that focus on participants in the greater events show an aspect of the struggles that often is overlooked. Sir Marmeduke’s relationship to the Bruces highlights the complexity of ties that often occur in border areas. I can only imagine that, for some participants, the possibility of facing a relative in combat must have created added stress.
Excellent story. And I am glad your tour in the southern hemisphere is going well.
Thank you!
Love this Chanel keep the awesome content coming my alba gu brath brother 🏴
Thanks
Thank you for your inspirational and informative stories. I was compelled to research the history of my own ancestors and was surprised to find out we date back to the early Earls of Argyle and splitting off to America in the 17th century. Thank you for your teachings.
Wonderful! The relationships of the middle age aristocracy and monarchies were intriguingly more intertwined than a simple them and us, but I won't parrot on!
Baboom tsk!
This is one of, if not, my favorite of the bits of history you've shared, Bruce, and a first rate telling, as always.
Ah thanks Stuart
Good story. Thanks.
This guy has a really interesting story. I'm glad you covered him because he deserves to be remembered, it adds nuance to those wars that often gets missed.
Thweng may have well been released or escaped before 1299 since his crest appears on the roll of Falkirk 1298,
Speaking of English knights being taken captive, I would love to hear your take on the 1388 battle of Otterburn and the two VERY different ballads that were inspired by it.
Maybe some day soon
There is a city in Tasmania called Glenorchy. So many Scottish names here, Ben Lomond, Perth, Campbell Town, and a few others I've mentioned in previous vids 😀. See ya on the 14th 😊
I am looking forward too

Love your Saturday morning stories.Something to look forward to.Hope your storied are well received down under.
They are!
An idea for a story for you Bruce. Arthur Thomas was a Scotsman explorer who was commissioned to explore and open up the interior of the State of Parana Brazil and in turn founded the cities of Londrina and Maringa in the north of the State in 1937. He named the city of Londrina (little London) As far as I know it's the only city in Parana that also has an Irish pub. And possibly in all Brazil.
"From Yorkshire, in a Norman Knighty sort of way"! which explains one of the reasons why i love this post.
😜
Great wee story Bruce , yer 👀 well my man 🥃
Another reminder of what family affairs these medieval wars were.
I've always felt a calling to visit Scotland . My ancestry can be traced back to the Picts .Before l die, l will see home.
I grew up near Guisborough and worked in Hartlepool where the De-Brus family had lands. You should take a trip down to Teesside Bruce, not as gorgeous as New Zealand but Guisborough priory is certanly worth a visit and it highlights the service the De-Brus's gave to the crown of England for context.
Maybe one day
Fascinating! And made even more enjoyable by the top quality humour :)
😜
Happy days!!
Always!
Great story well told. Including the dreadful pun at the end!
😜
That's a great story and good to see you in Central Otago. Hope your tour is going well.
It is!
Must be a sair fecht for you, putting up with all that sunny warm weather at this time of year. 😎
Nightmare eh?😜
Lovely to hear of the more personal stories you tell. Glad your tour is going well.
I LOVE LEARNING ALL THE DIFFERENT NAMES OMG! Clydetoon is adorbs and charming. Sorry! But it is!!
I’ve been there!! I’m so excited to see this first video from your recent NZ tour. I’m born and raised kiwi 😁
Yay
Fantastic video!!!
Thanks. The next upload is another Bannockburn story
Outstanding Bruce really enjoyed this episode, well done big man 👏
Much appreciated
Couple of years ago I was at Duart Castle on Mull. I met with the Ian McClean who told me that the McVay's were Pikemen at Bannockburn. He told me that Pikemen carried the day. I don't know if it is true but I enjoyed the story.
I confess I dont know about it at all, though i have known the name all my life. Looking forward to the story
Have you ever considered doing a bit of magnet fishing off Stirling bridge to see if any old English 'trinkets' might be found to adorn your walls?
I really enjoy your stories, you tell them so well. I wish you were some of my History Professors. I would have hung on every word.
Wow, thank you!
Just watched you in Lost King.
Yay
What fascinated us was passing places with Scottish names - next to Welsh place names!
Don’t forget the Welsh! - and the sheep dogs…
He had 3 sons but the first died childless while the other 2 entered the clergy. His eldest daughter Lucia married the Northumbrian Baron Robert of Lumley.
They named their son Marmaduke and adopted the Thweng coat of arms. Marmaduke's parrots are still flown by the Earl of Scarborough today.
That was wonderful Bruce and you were right, I hadn't heard it before. Thank You.
You're very welcome
Love your stories❤
I used to play with my friends in the Pelsrteam burn.
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
Best of story Bruce my friend afternoon bud
Marmeduke is my hero, thanks for the storyline
1 of 100 knights who made a "heroic escape" at the battle of Stirling Bridge .
Brilliant! If you can at all, fit in Stewart Island,,, mental! I played there Hogmanay 2009....
Fabulous story. ❤ Looks like you're having perfect weather there.
It was beautiful
For anyone wondering what Bruce says in Gaelic at the end of all his videos, it's an old Gaelic saying that roughly translates to:
"Don't forget to subscribe and smash the like button."
🤣
Your translation is not what I was taught, but I am Bruce will like it.
If you are going to Melbourne, there is a Bannockburn about an hour from there.
That was a good story. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing this...fascinating stuff...E...
My pleasure!
Great video and I have to chuckle at the memory of Spike Milligan when he trolled Life On Earth. “Here in a 5 star hotel on the Hawaiian island of Ohau, filming Conditions, and expenses, are perfect.” Worth every penny, you, Spike, and Sir David.
😂
Beautiful place.
Yes it was!
Hope your enjoying New Zealand. Enjoy
What's not to like?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours trying to find out if any of my family in Auckland are going to see you. Watch out for a shout if they are 👌
Would like to see you do a video on the romans in Kirkintilloch
A'reyt Bruce. Your soft spot for Yorkshire is showing in this cracking tale from a beautiful location.
Those Normans were not that well liked here though, after the "Harrying of the North". You can see it from all the place names with "Robin Hood" in them.
It does give me another chance to mention the RUclips channel of a Yorkshire lass called Catherine Warr, which viewers might like? I mentioned this channel on comments there, after finding it and subscribing. It could do with some more subscribers I reckon.
P.S. If that is not your kind of thing, then another Yorkshire lass, Lucy on Benidorm Stuff channel did a St Patrick's Day video, as if to prove my saying that if you scratch an Englishman you will find a bit of green.
Well done that lass
Great story 😊 ☮️❤️🌹🦋🕯️
Thank you! 🤗
Love your videos!
Thank you!
Ya got me! I did _not_ see that twisty end coming.
Well punned!
😜
I am Dutch and I am binging all your videos after discovering your channel. Great content. And I even understand most of the jokes... I think.😅
Yay
Hi just found out I am directly related to Marmaduke Twang, so guess to Robert de Bruce too in a round about way.
This guy sounds like a badass
My GGGGR John MACDONALD, from island of Eigg. Then immigrated to PICTOU, NOVA SCOTIA 1780..
I have all the ancestry books from NS.
Hope your stamina holds out on the tour! Guid fowk are scarce! and we've obviously a fair bit to learn yet...
Aye, nothing like an ice cold Red Stripe during the hot summer days !
😜
Marmaduke de Thweng was the son of Marmaduke Thweng of Kilton and Alice de Brus, who was the great great granddaughter of Adam de Brus, Lord of Skelton, and brother to Robert de Brus, 1st Lord of Annandale, and founder of Guisborough Priory where the chronicle you quoted from was written.
Hi Neil you sound very knowledgeable. So perhaps you can help me. I have a stupid Brain disease which, one side effect from tablets is brain fog. I have seen the coat of arms. Somewhere and can’t remember and it’s driving me up the wall. I’m Lancashire lad but have family in Yorkshire and have always visited historic sites. And I just know I’ve seen his coat of arms. Hope you can help.
@@garygalt4146 a silver background divided in thirds by a red bar with two green parrots above the bar and 1 below. These arms are now carried by his desendant the Earl of Scarborough. I'm from that part of Yorkshire that the de Brus family held.
@@garygalt4146 Marmaduke had 3 sons, one died childless and the others joined the church. His eldest daughter married the Baron of Lumley who adopted the crest, since it was quite famous after Stirling Bridge. It's now used by his descendants the Earls of Scarborough.
Marmaduke's great-grandson Ralph was beheaded after the Epiphany rising plot against Henry IV.
This is incredible, my son just sent me a link to this video to watch, as Marmeduke de Thwenge is our ancestor! There is another earlier Marmeduke in our family tree born in 1100 in England and I am a 33rd generation descendant of his. I’ve never counted to find out how many generations we are descended from the Marmeduke who was in the Scottish Freedom Wars, but I know he is in my line. That coat of arms blew me away as well because that is my family’s coat of arms lol. Great video!!!
We love ya Bruce! Come down here anytime bro ❤.
😘
There was another first knight De Argentine sire I have never run from a fight nor will I do now spurring to the nearest schiltrom, dies gallantly
Class video bruce - any plans to do something on Myton on Swale or Old Byland? Two battles people need to know more about that followed on fron Bannockburn! 🏴
Did think about the big anniversary last year, but was in Normandy filming
@@ScotlandHistoryTours still time to do it when you get back mate 😛 no one better to do it than you!
💚
I wish you were doing some NSW gigs.
Me too
@@ScotlandHistoryTours could you not find a venue?
Hey Bruce,
Love your Shows.. guess who my great great great
Great grandfather is?
😜
The great king was very humane. God bless his legacy 🏴♥️🌹👍👍😊
I like the face painting 😂
😁
Looking forward to the 14th.
Yay
Good story. 👍
(p.s. I had heard of Marmaduke Thweng, btw - once heard, it's not a name you're likely to forget! 😄).
Thanks for another great story, you're right about not knowing it. That New Zealand scenery looks very like our part of Perthshire, amazingly so in fact, made me homesick.
As a diversion I'm going to try and find out why 13th century Anglo-Norman nobility should chose green parrots for their symbol of holy trinity.
It did surprise me
@@ScotlandHistoryTours according to the Internet first recorded in mid 13th century for that family. In the time of Henry III.
The parrot was known as a popinjay at that time.
So thanks again, it's a bad day when when you don't learn something new
@@Wee_Langside "Shooting at the popinjay", a collection of coloured feathers at the top f a high pole, was a sport. Maybe the first Baron Thweng won an important match?
Another Bannockburn 😮 you’ll tell me next there is another Cumbernauld 😅
What are they called?😂
Naw, there'll never be another cumbernauld, it would go against the laws of nature or physics, or god. . .
Hey Bruce, my names Corey and I’ve commented before I love your videos and you are so much like my uncle humour wise.. but I was wondering if you could talk about my Family Clan the Gunn Clan if you can? I know I was born In Inverness but I’ve always wondered why the clan isn’t really talked about as much as other clans. You’re an amazing person Bruce… latha math a bhith agad
I've never done clan videos. Who knows what the future holds
Ralph de Monthermer who tradition says warned (later King) Robert the Bruce that he had been betrayed to King Edward I was also released without ransom. Many take that as proof that there is at least some truth to the tale.
Haste ye back.
As a proud Scot, I'm not sure if it shows chivalry or not. Sounds more like family ties mean more than the fight for independence.
Aye mibbyes
Drat, only just discovered you were here in nz. Hope you enjoy antipodes.
I am!
Boy, you sure get around Bruce. First Shetland, now New Zealand. I half expect to next hear you're on the Moon (I'm sure you'll find a part of the Moon with a Scottish connection somewhere).
Supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie after Bannockburn built a steam rocket and headed off to form a Highland Empire on the dark side of the moon.
😜
For sure
Neil Armstrong? and (oh dear!) Richard Nixon. Both Border names.
"The better part of valour is discretion, in the which better part have I saved mine own life" (Falstaff in Henry IV part I). It doesn't actually mean that discretion is part of valour, but rather that it is its counterpart - its opposite - but better because it allows Falstaff (a blustering, comedic coward) to survive.
Exactly
Also proves the club that always looks after its own, and we ain't in it!
True
In mediaeval times, parrots were called Popinjays 😊
I know
Found out im 24% Scottish 😊
Make a video on the macdonald that fought for Napoleon

I’d love to buy you a coffee ….nae sugar or milk …just good coffee….
Other famous people to escape Dumbarton David Byrne of Talking heads
Had Marmaduke Tweng been where Henry de Bohun was two nights before, we'd be hearing a woeful tale of killing a cousin who was English! And I'll wager both sides would've gotten the story 100% right for the exact opposite reasons!😀 Fortunately for this knight, it was after the battle and so bending a knee meant a dungeon cell at the worst or a good meal with a cousin you hadn't seen in ages! Either way, you're spending the night indoors for a change and out of that lovely weather! Marmaduke chose wisely! Suspect Henry wishes that he had!
Good point

My dad took dna tests and guess what? I’m related to him!
Nobody saw that coming🤣

"Got off Scot Free" 👀. Is there another "story" in that story Bruce?
Here "scot" does not refer to a Scotsman. It was a tax, from the Latin 'scutum', meaning 'shield', which appeared on the coin used to pay it.
@@janetmackinnon3411 Thank you Janet. Very interesting.
