I thought I’d watched all your vlogs but found this one hadn’t been watched yet. Fun fabrics - especially the ones for Layla. I do love sewing for children/babies. Happy days Rachel!
Oh Rachel, sadly I live in the South, otherwise I would want to take you (and your marvellous hubby) out for a meal!! You have been such a help to an older beginner, thank you so much. 🐾🐾
Thank you for sharing your day Rachel. I really enjoyed it. I wish I could walk as much as you but I would be so out of breath and probably collapse. I love your hair. I love that you like to try new things makes your life fun. I love sewing for my granddaughters and I know you will too. Enjoy Layla because time goes by so fast.
The Layla dress is lovely! You did a fabulous job on it. I love the Mabel dress too! Thanks for the shirring tutorial. Definitely will try the tips. So good to see Martin too!
Your Layla dress is absolutely GORGEOUS! Well done you! The style is perfect on you! Your husband's accent reminds me of my dear late Grandad who was a Yorkshire man. He immigrated to Australia in 1920 (yes he was an OLD grandad!) and was born in Scarborough (UK). spent 12 months in the UK when I was a child and had my 8th birthday there. When I return I want to tour the northern areas as we were based in the South (we lived in Windsor). I love the Mabel. I have never worked with Tilly's patterns but they doo look wonderful. I'm going to make the Marnie soon though. Oh and I have to say the Piper is very expressive. She had my one year old Kelpie Bindi-Sue listening and getting rather concerned about the dog in my laptop😂.
I also wind my shirring bobbin on my machine, that’s what works for me too! I don’t tie off when I work rows I turn do a few stitches down and turn for the next row. I found that helps not having to pull up the bobbin thread.
Thanks for the tutorial Rachel. I’ve got a Pfaff Performance Icon and I’ve struggled with shirting! Auto filling the bobbin and a microtechnology needle have worked for me! ❤️
Love, love, love your hair! I’m 64 and I’ve been pleasing myself changing my hair any which way I like for a few years now. I love that the new trend is to be your authentic self, so much freer than in my day when you had to be seen to be keeping up appearances for appearance sake. Again LOOOOVE you hair.
It's lovely to see you and Martin. And the sunshine. I miss Freddie's Flowers. I got some once every few weeks when I was in the UK - such a treat. Your black dress looks fabulous and I look forward to seeing the finished Mabel.
This was a great video! A mixture of everything, I loved it. LOVE the Layla dress. The shirring tutorial was brilliant. I have my normal machine which I can’t shir on because it doesn’t gather, and I have to get my older machine out. I’m going to try and wind the bobbin using the machine and seeing if that works. Thanks for the tip.
I'm loving your Leila dress so much.. It looks fabulous on you 👌💖. The Mabel is looking cute too... I had to giggle when watching you at the end there.. It looked as though Piper was listening to your every word 😂😜🐾💖
I used to do a lot of shirring. I had a sweet daughter and I loved sewing for her. I had a pfafff at the time and had to do it the way you described. Playing with my machine was one of the things I did to get do more interesting sewing.
Really enjoyed this video and seeing York! The Layla dress is amazing and a great style on you. I wasn’t too sure about the Mabel but seeing your beautiful finished dress makes me want to have a go. Thanks for the shirring tips. Only tried this once before but definitely going to try machine winding the bobbin and using microtex needle😃
I felt so lucky saying goodbye to you this lunchtime and then getting to see you again 😂. You need to make so many more of the vampire dresses because it fit you so well and looked stunning 😍
Thanks for the shirring tutorial, I think I’ll need to give it a try🙂👍🏻 Love your Layla dress,! And it is obvious that you & Martin are thrilled to be grandparents (“Granddad!”), sewing for the grands is SO fun! 💕
Hi just love your videos you are so natural. The fabric and the dress is is so nice. The dark fabric suits you. Where did you learn to do the pattern blocks please.
Great shearing instructions, I’ve been a bit hesitant to try it. My machine bobbin is similar to yours. Have you tried raising and lowering your needle to draw up the elastic? I find I can grab that short thread and pull it if I have a very light weight fabric that might get sucked down into the feed dogs. Your self drafted sew the look vampire’s wife dress turned out fantastic. Have you seen Luna Lapin? I’m sure you have….that little grand baby needs a Luna with some outfits that match hers 😊 I made characters for the grandkids for Christmas and they get little outfits for the holidays. Great scrap busters and hopefully nice memories too.
OMG thats spooky you mentioned the vampires wife dress, I was just going to tell you about The Muse Dress by Sew La Di Da, so if you cant be othered drafting your own, try this xxx PS I just got a new sewing machine!! it sings to me when I switch it on lol x
Rachel, I love both dresses! It’s so nice to see you on here again. That shirring explanation was the best one I’ve watched….thank you for that. It looks like you had a wonderful day with Martin. You guys certainly don’t look old enough to be a grandma and grandpa but isn’t it wonderful to be one?! ❤
I really enjoyed the vlog Rachel, except for the part when you asked peiper if he wanted to go for a walk, my dog went crazy 😅 you used the exact phrase that I use. 😊
Hi Rachel! I have a lot to say about this video 🤩 1. Your hair is fabulous! I love the purple, and would you mind mentioning what you used, because I'd love to try it. 😍 2. Your Vampires Wife dress is amazing!!!! All the 😍😍😍😍 I shall look forward to the drafting video so I don't have to do the thinking when I draft it myself! 😆😆😆 (Thank you in advance!). 3. I got very excited for you when you talked about saving things to draft for yourself, I absolutely do this too and it's great fun to have an inspiration gallery to look through. 4. Your Mabel dress is beautiful, and will be lovely for the summer. Lynne 😍🤩
Hi Lynne I use directions hair dye it comes in loads of different amazing colours and is semi permanent so washes out after a few washes (although mines been in 3 weeks now) and kind to your hair too thank you so much x
Loved this vlog! Thank you for showing your fabrics and especially thanking you for sharing York by the river. Was there some years ago. I live in Washington state US.
I went to a brilliant bodice block course at the lovely Lamazi and the book they recommended for going forward with your block is Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s Wear by Winifred Aldrich. Great book to give confidence to enable any change you can think of to your block.
Thanks for the showing the shirring and how you do this. I too have a Pfaff (different model) but at least I have a starting point for set up (and needles) for when I'm brave enough to give it a go (and have a suitable pattern). Love your clothing style and makes. I "found" you via Ruan who helped me with the April blouse challenge in getting this uploaded onto Insta (I'm not very Insta savvy).
What a lovely video, really enjoyed it. With regards to the shirring I just love how you do just figure out and do your own thing - and it works for you. Enjoyed York too, could I ask where you had lunch? it looks gorgeous. Your Layla dress is just gorgeous, and the fit is amazing on you. I would love to have a go a drafting my own block, but don't feel confident about doing it. Mabel dress is fantastic and can't wait to see it on you. Love mid-week musings... Thank you x
The Leila dress is beautiful. Hope I spelled her name correctly. Thanks for the shirring tutorial. I’ve had problems so will try the microtex needle. Would love to see how you did the exposed ruffle in a future vlog.
Both dresses in this vlog look beautiful! 😍 When you make something from that softshell and maybe have some leftover, I made pairs of stroller muffs for two friends with kids now and they’ve been very well received. Just takes a bit of softshell, something cuddly, a bit of vlies and a few snaps. I do have a pattern drawn for it if you’re interested.

My dog barks at the leaves too. She chases them in the garden and when she gets to them realises they are not a living thing! they are such characters
