  • A BR upload now with a nice variety of traction, Kensington Olympia. We see Inter-City, Freight, Parcels and Eurostar services plus a Network SouthEast route learning EMU (ex EPB unit). Eurostar services were still at Waterloo at this time and we see an ECS working to North Pole Depot. Also two HSTs are seen, both are in effect 'North of London' Eurostar connections. They were only for passengers that had onward tickets for Eurostar servives, as you can see they ran empty or nearly empty. The staff always outnumbered the passengers and they didn't last for very long! Loco classes seen are 47, 56, 59, 60, 92, HST & 373 on Inter-City, Eurostar, parcels, freight & light engine moves. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    Great video!! I was searching for this. I used to live round the station and always took the District line that terminates at Olympia. And vaguely remember seeing the Eurostar a couple of times passing thru at high speed, cool footage!! :D

      I'm pleased you enjoyed it..... Until the late 1970s the only passenger service here were a few peak hour trains to Clapham Junction. The place is jumping now....

    That “kettle boiling whistle” the class 43 makes when it’s slowly accelerating is just wonderful to hear.

      Kenny O was always a good spot to see freight and all sorts of unusual workings as it was a main link from the Southern to the rest of the network.

      Yes, i though 306 had survived. It was in the EWS heritage fleet for a bit. The Eurostar and HST 'Eurostar' passings was a pure fluke-but good!

      The guards on the Underground always worked from the last car. If the train ever un-coupled in service, a member of staff was always on one part of the train.

    Fantastic green class 47 on parcel post train 😄 What would it look like if Amazon sent there parcels by rail instead of thousands of lorries and white van man 🤔 One of my favourite train spotting stations back in the early 80s 😄 Overnight for Man Picc then tripping round London all day fantastic lol 😆 Great video cheers for sharing Stevie 😎

      Always a good spot for a good variety of traction. There are people looking at using old EMU or DMU stock for small parcel deliveries but i imagine the bureaucracy is immense!

    Did the Inter-City’s stop at Olympia? I am sure I recall that some did.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад +2

      Cross Country loco hauled did indeed stop at Kenny O. The HSTs seen in this vid were not InterCity workings but services ran for or by Eurostar. You could only ride on them if you had a connecting ticket to or from a Eurostar service. And so they ran empty from p-laces like Manchester to Waterloo and as the vid shows there were no or few passengers! These were going to be replaced by North of London 373s (the 33xx shorter sets which were used by GNER on the East Coast for a few years) but the lack of passengers due to the growth of budget airlines stopped this happening. Some of the NoL 373s never carried passengers, a total waste of money, and of a good train!

  • @JJthrashing

    Lovely old footage so much variety in those days, didn’t realise the Eurostar could run power on third rail.. thought it was overhead only ?

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  2 года назад +3

      Not then, they ran on 3rd rail to Dover from Waterloo. It changed when they moved to St Pancras

    • @arthurmatthews9321
      @arthurmatthews9321 2 года назад +1

      Yes the 373s were fitted with third rail DC equipment from new so they could run on the southern region. The pick up shoes were removed when they switched to HS1.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад +1

      That was an empty train, it would have left Acton Yard in the middle of the night loaded, weighing in at around 2000 tons for unloading somewhere on the Southern. Funny thing is, that was only half the train. It would have arrived at Acton from the quarry weighing in at around 4800 ton with the train split to serve different terminals!

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus It was quite good when the class 66 shape (i know it's 59) was an occasional feature and not almost every freight loco as is the case now.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад

      Eurostar used to run from Waterloo and the depot was at North Pole, accessed from this line. The District has served Olympia for over 100 years, back since when it was called Addison Road. Wikipedia is a god source for checking histories.

    • @zeddessell
      @zeddessell 4 года назад

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Actually, the District Line didn't go to Olympia until 1946. Underground maps from before then did show the District Branch to Addison Road, but this was simply how they chose to represent the "Middle Circle" and "Outer Circle" services, which were operated by the Great Western Railway and North London Railway respectively.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад +3

      No, it was a passenger working.....although it's hard to tell as there were more staff on board than passengers! Once Eurostar services were running, BR ran special feeder services to Waterloo from Manchester (and possible other places) and only Eurostar ticket holders could travel on these services, which is why they pretty much ran empty! And not for very long either.....
