On Blizzard Ninetales and Beam Venusaur I've been playing around Energy Amp + Shell Bell. They total to 9% cooldown reduction and the damage boost + extra unite cdr from amp is also very good.
Been trying to get more insight on all the held items and looking at the history of these. Kind of interesting that every Slowbro build during the NA Aeos Cup ran Choice Specs with Exp Share. ZugRug heavily exploited these glasses at the bottom of the maps to defend the pads with Scald.
I think the best takeaway from this video is to check the unite db and calculate each Pokemon's boost from wise glasses (7%) then figure out their scaling on abilities.
If you are playing Eldegoss with the goal of being a medic and stacking shields, and the shields and healing scale with special attack why not run special attack specs with it? It also helps make leaf tornado do a bit more damage as well.
Jake, when there is a pokemon like venusaur whose solar beam scaling is on "27 % of SpAtk" do you have to consider that there are 5 ticks of damage? Doesn't that mean if you hit the full move it is essentially actually a 135% (27*5) scale on SpAtk? I'm not saying that is for sure how this works, but some of these formulas that have multiple ticks of damage may be deceiving here.
I get what you are saying, it takes a lot of things into account but first you might not hit every tick, second (I'm a little out of my depth here lol) every new attack will be factored against the enemies defenses. SO you aren't getting that big chunk as if it was one attack at 135%. You are having the attack mitigated 5 times by the enemy. Hope this makes sense and I also hope I'm explaining this correctly!
@@spragels A little help: Choice specs should only affect the first hit, and will only affect one enemy per use. It's also a flat damage boost (60 + 40% of SpAtk is added to damage AFTER calculation) as opposed to something like Wise Glasses which is a part of the scaling calculation. Meaning that low scaling, high SpAtk pokemon like Venusaur will benefit most from Specs. At lv 15, specs add 404.8 damage to a single opponent every 8 seconds, assuming you are hitting an opponent with a move at said interval. The cooldown DOES take effect if you hit wild pokemon, so be careful with moves like Petal Dance and Solar Beam which can strike multiple opponents at once. I will say, AFAIK and FWIW, Float Stone Discord recommends against any SpAtk items for Venusaur over a Muscle/Focus/BB build. Utility from other items should be decided based on what level you think you'll be spending the most time/getting the most bang for your buck. For example, while Gardevoir's SpAtk at Lv 15 is the highest in the game, it isn't even close to exceeding Pikachu and A9 (even getting slightly bested by Cramorant) at lv6. Still behind Pikachu at lv 10. If you think you'll consistently be getting to lv 15, less of an issue.
@@spragels Hey just to clarify on this point, the way defenses work in this game is entirely percentage based so, for example, 5 ticks of 20 will be reduced by the exact same amount as 1 tick of 100. This means Venusaur's solar beam is effectively 135% SpA ratio if you get all hits. Here's the formula for reference (from mathcord) FLOOR(BASE*600/(600+DEF)) I will say though the description for solar beam on unite-db is pretty confusing
I run Gardevior with Wise Glasses, Specs Choice, and Shell Bell. Works great so far. Additional Sp. Atk. with some ability damage increase, CD reduction, and heals.
thats troll, u need buddy shield and focus band, fb to survive ur shitty early laning and buddy shield for team fight bcuz this item is busted, u only need a choice spec, thats all
@@kongou6548 bs. I have a 70%+ win rate and have never once used Buddy Barrier. You pop an ultimate maybe 2-3 times a match and are taking it for a shield that on most attackers isnt that big? Hard Pass. Also Garde isn't nearly as bad currently early laning, especially with the proper lane partner.
I dont understand choice specs' high praise. The highest spatk you can achieve with 2 item slots is 1226 if you assume that -items apply in the left to right order (This is supported by the muscle band scope lens bug, where the scope lens fails to work if the muscle band is to the left (ie the basic attack bonus causes something strange to happen in the scope lens being applied)) -items that give stat boosts instead of active effects apply their passive, then their stat boost (wise glasses gives 7%, then the 26 spatk afterward) -they use conventional rounding Level 15 Gardevoir with SpAtkSpectacles, WiseGlasses, and ChoiceSpecs, in that order My equation looks like: 1.07(1001+6(16)+16)+26+26=1225.79 Right. 1226 Spatk. And the choice specs bonus is 0.4(1226)+60 = 490.4+60 = about 550 additional damage. The lowest max HP you can have is 3000. That is at level 1. You get this 550 extra damage every 8 seconds, which many Pokemon are able to EXCEED with a single basic attack. You are a gardevoir with 1226 special attack and you would rather this over aeos cookie or focus band...
I’m not saying you need to run all three but it’s an option for gard. I would probably only run one item like this on most Pokémon and the use buddy or focus or score etc.
I'm not a numbers guru, but I definately feel that running any more than two glasses is mega troll. Heck, I'd say running more than 1 is pretty troll, when you consider that you give up a powerful utility item like Muscle Band, Focus Band, Buddy Barrier, Score Shield or Energy Amp depending on the pokemon. Choice Specs feels like the best item hands down. It just adds so much raw damage in comparison to the others, stacks with the others if you do choose to add them, and sure it's only 1 proc every 8 seconds, but most mages have cooldowns to play around anyway. Wise Glasses 7% increase really doesn't add as much, although an arguement can be made for super low cooldown mages with multi-hit attacks, but even then I don't really think it comes close to easy free burst damage (Which is more valueable than sustained damage in Unite anyway due to the importance of Objective and Farm Stealing) Score Specs just seem really troll in general. Mages aren't good at scoring as most lack mobility, and can easily die over a singular score. They demand you run Score Shield to actually succeed, at which point is the slightly above average Special Attack gain even worth it? It's not that much, and you'd probably be doing more with Choice or Wise and running a utility item, so you don't have to put focus onto a minigame that can easily get your squishy butt killed.
Great guide! I can't wait for to see your video on suggestions on what to do with the instant 30 consumable. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I'm waiting for your video to confirm my theories. :D
Depends on what type of Pokémon you play the most. Basically whatever items you end up taking the most for your games. If you want the items that benefit the most by going from 20 to 30 then muscle band and scope lens get the biggest bonuses right now.
I learned my lesson that I should not use Sp-atk specs on the map Shivre city in quick game . If I have bad teammate. Furthermore, I see sometimes I can 2 hit K.O. a Pokemon if I use Pikachu Electro ball with Choice specs and Sp-atk specs, I 1 hit K.O. if that pokemon is lose some 50-80 percent HP. So I chose shell bell to add something that help regen Pikachu.
for cram, sp attack spec will be good because his stats is low, means that adding 96 to it will be adding around 13% to its sp atk. (while other high sp atk will have a smaller % using this) its actually quite simple, for any pokemon that have low sp atk stat, then the sp atk spec will be better. (especially when the move scales well)
A weird pokemon that I find has a fun bonus off, choice specks is slowbrow going scald and Psychic as the bonus damge it gives is converted into health just rember to run a health item with it and focus band works just fine with surf build but not as effective I find
I would love to see a pokemon's base stats in the pokemon menu before and after applying the items, so that we ahev a direction where to go to with our items.
Cram is a burst mage anyways, so choice might make more sense, since you're likely weaving out between cool downs unless you have a super safe frontline ahead of you in team fights or during the lane in general going for big pokes.
I'm trying to think of choice is worth on cram because the hurricane damage doesn't matter much where's the second ability (surf) won't proc choice specs and is where the damage come from
Hey Jake I think the issue with your moves just randomly going somewhere is because of the "Move aim follow movement direction" option. I think in the past it was only when you started using the move it followed your movement, but now it's acting as if the left stick is basically another right stick.
PSA: These 3 combined don't turn Mike into a chunking monster, despite appearances. Edit: I wasted my lvl-30 trial tickets to bring you this information. Edit 2: I redact this statement, a few early scores and you can contribute significantly to a fight.
Hey Jake, I was wondering with mamoswine coming in the next couple of days, what do you think would be the best counter measure against them? It obviously looks really powerful, and will most likely be in every casual match for the foreseeable future, but in attempt to get ‘ahead of the curve’, how would you go about countering it? I am a free to play player, and have built up roughly 12k coin, and want to be strategic with how I go about using my coins. Maybe this would be a pretty cool question for you to answer (if you haven’t already)
I don't think Mamoswine will have a dedicated counter because it looks so strong, but my strategy would be to starve it of farm like previously suggested and to cc Mamo before it can cc you. My pick is Ninetales for that, but Pikachu can also shut it down in the laning phase. We'll have to see exactly what strategies emerge to find better counterplays, but this is how I'll approach it at first 🙂
@spragels the Gengar part was Interesting I doubt you remember but I gave you my numbers on him I wasn’t even thinking to use sp attk specs I was running shell bell for the additional sp attk I gonna try this out.
After the new update I've went into training mode special attack specs even after six Stacks only gives you a little bit more damage than wise glasses we're talkin about 20 to 30 damage with Shadow Ball level 15 so in my opinion wise glasses and choice specs are way better and more viable then
@@shammgod992 yh, u should lvl up razor claw, scope lens and buddy barrier to 30. They are extremely useful and boost from 20 to 30 is considerably high, compared to some other items
Even choice specs is not good on Venusaur with how it's being used. People almost always go for sludge bomb bfore solar beam to reduce opponents' sp def. Therefore the Choice specs bonus damage will be wasted on sludge bomb instead of the hardhitting solar beam
I'm on the Venusaur explanation, and I think either I'm misunderstanding the numbers, or Jake is, because when I read solar beam, it says 27%, but it ticks 5 times. Meaning that in benefits 27x5 or 135% total from special attack. At least that is how I take it from Unite DB. 135% is solid and not crazy like Gardevoir's future sight, but it may change perseption on the item choice a bit more.

Ah ok I played PU since relase on switch and watched your channel since then but i never heard o scaling. Hm very good example of the little ingame information
If you use wise glasses on a pollen puff eldegoss build, the scaling be kinda nuts. It's cuz pollen puff heal is like, 165% special attack or something ridiculous like that
Eldegoss main here. The only SpAtk item that's good on Eldegoss is SpAtk Specs. You are often underleveled and have a lower base SpAtk stat than other Pokemon, but the heal/shield scaling is good and synergizes well with Score Shield. Wise Glasses is basically never better than SpAtk Specs if you're any good at stat stacking.
They really need to label which Pokémon are special attackers. I dislike that the function isn’t clear for the items, but straight up not having a quick reference of what items even function for your character is pretty ridiculous. I don’t understand that decision. Good video! Thanks for helping sort things out.
Good subject for a good video thanks. One question : why you dont upgrade your buddy barrier to level 30? Or your claw ? Do you plan to release a video about which items to upgrade to level 20 and which ones to upgrade to level 30?
Hey I actually recently picked up Blissey and wanted to run my build by you after seeing this vid! I’m running the focus band and score shield, but then I actually threw the sp. attack specs on there as well. I found it pretty easy to score 6 times as long as I coordinated with my lane partner, and then at that point my soft-boileds were doing a TON of healing. Felt really powerful. Does this seem like just a “win more” button or do you think there is some viability to what I’m running?
@@chasinghaze0962 buddy barrier is the best item in the game, you can't go wrong with it. I will admit that shell bell is kinda weak but I like to spam moves.
The way most of the Sp atk scaling on damage is analyzed is not highly accurate. The unite-db provides damage numbers per tick or per hit of a multi hit move. Mr mime that get's 170% scaling on Sp attack stat for confusion is actually lesser than blastioise's water spout that gets 36%. This is because the former is a one hit move while the later is a 6 hit one. So assessing the breakeven points are more complex that just feeling the scaling number per hit is small or large when it comes to choosing between the Sp attack items. For example, consider the same pokemon, venusaur in a 8 second window. The petal dance build will benifit more from wise glasses while the solar beam build can get more out of choice specs.
Here is a breakdown for the petal dance venusaur with a Lv 20 wise glasses vs Lv20 Choice specs at Lv15. With wise glasses you get 74 more damage on boosted attack , 80 more on petal dance , 38 more on giga drain (22 more HP gained) and 90 more on the unite move. With choice specs you get 456 more damage on the first skill you land (which may be wasted on a wild pokemon if a petal comes into contact with it first). If we consider 3 boosted attacks, petal dance , 3 giga drain ( which approximately takes same time as that of the choice specs cooldown) ; You only got 40 less damage while getting 66 more HP on a single target using the wise glasses instead of choice specs. The damage numbers goes drastically up if you factor in your unite move, more boosted attack if you are using muscle band and you are hitting multiple targets to spam your moves even more (which is how you play with this build) . Wise glasses has more utility than choice specs with the petal dance build. You need to consider multiple factors while doing a break even analysis than feeling a pokemon scales badly... Equations can always be very very deceptive.
Jake, score shield, focus band or buddy barrier, & sp atk specs w/ Eldegoss has been so good. Cotton guard to stack with score shield, and leaf tornado to get in & out.
@@kongou6548 why? Scoring is by the numbers how wins are made. It gives an HP bonus and has a better passive ability than buddy barrier. Would be interested in a comparison of a bulky venu build vs an offensive one? wpuld you guys suggest score shield or a SPA increasing iem or even muscle band?
Does your opinion in this video regarding Choice specs consider the fact that the additional attack only applies to one pokemon? According to unite-db atleast. Since something like petaldance/giga since both are area tick/area it might not be that effective?
Feel you man just got to all the way from Elite 5 to Veteran 3 in one night but the next day went all the way down to Veteran 1 again. Honestly a combination of bad luck, bad teammates, tiltedness, etc. IK some ppl would say that bad teammates is not objective but when you consider the fact that over 50% of my losses are from teammates forcing the fight on Zapdos/failing to defend it even when we have the lead, then obviously something is not right. Well at lvl 15, gardevoir has 1001 sp atk, so wise glasses adds 70 extra sp.atk at most. If you have 500 sp atk, 35. So it's really not alot.
Choice specs's passive has a long cooldown and scoring in the early game is risky, Therefore wise glasses is the best sp.atk item,
If you are playing Eldegoss with the goal of being a medic and stacking shields, and the shields and healing scale with special attack why not run special attack specs with it?
@@spragels Gotcha, I definitely am no expert so thanks for getting back to me!
@@spragels
A little help:
Choice specs should only affect the first hit, and will only affect one enemy per use.
Here's the formula for reference (from mathcord)
FLOOR(BASE*600/(600+DEF))
I will say though the description for solar beam on unite-db is pretty confusing
@@CaptainL Thank you!!!

Same, I want to learn how to play ninetales, that skin is so cool 🤩
I dont understand choice specs' high praise. The highest spatk you can achieve with 2 item slots is 1226 if you assume that
-items apply in the left to right order (This is supported by the muscle band scope lens bug, where the scope lens fails to work if the muscle band is to the left (ie the basic attack bonus causes something strange to happen in the scope lens being applied))
-items that give stat boosts instead of active effects apply their passive, then their stat boost (wise glasses gives 7%, then the 26 spatk afterward)
-they use conventional rounding
Level 15 Gardevoir with SpAtkSpectacles, WiseGlasses, and ChoiceSpecs, in that order
My equation looks like:
1.07(1001+6(16)+16)+26+26=1225.79
Right.
So what I'm hearing is choice specs are an amazing addition to the game
Thanks for doing this! Super helpful 👌
Glad it was helpful!
Wise Glasses 7% increase really doesn't add as much, although an arguement can be made for super low cooldown mages with multi-hit attacks, but even then I don't really think it comes close to easy free burst damage (Which is more valueable than sustained damage in Unite anyway due to the importance of Objective and Farm Stealing)
Score Specs just seem really troll in general.
At the 7min mark you mention where you get the stats, I was wondering if they had a channel or something as I can't seem to find them?
Looking for a link too! 🙋
So happy you put this out. i was so confused. thank you
I learned my lesson that I should not use Sp-atk specs on the map Shivre city in quick game .
THIS is the vid I needed.. thanks!!
for cram, sp attack spec will be good because his stats is low, means that adding 96 to it will be adding around 13% to its sp atk. (while other high sp atk will have a smaller % using this)
its actually quite simple, for any pokemon that have low sp atk stat, then the sp atk spec will be better. (especially when the move scales well)
Excellent video. I needed this
Thank you so much super useful
You should do a video on what items to consider spending our Super Item Enhancers on.
Its only worth it for Scope lens and maybe exp share. Other items are fine at lvl 20. Just store them until the next new items
I'd recommend buddy barrier, razor claw and scope lens. They are extremely useful
I get MVP alot with Gardevoir... I feel like the opponents don't prioritize her and I can ship away at their team from far away until they catch on.
Ye I always catch when it's to late😅
Choice Specs are actually very good on Blastoise.

Like for spragels se this!!!
A weird pokemon that I find has a fun bonus off, choice specks is slowbrow going scald and Psychic as the bonus damge it gives is converted into health just rember to run a health item with it and focus band works just fine with surf build but not as effective I find
You've convinced me to make Choice Specs my next lv 20 item.
I would love to see a pokemon's base stats in the pokemon menu before and after applying the items, so that we ahev a direction where to go to with our items.
Out of the three specs which is best for gard?I thought of using score shield, buddy barrier and sp.atk specs for gard
Amazing video! Please update this video when Sylveon comes out!!
Will do!
Special attackers that are not Gardevoir and Sylveon needs a bit of buff in their scaling progression
Cram is a burst mage anyways, so choice might make more sense, since you're likely weaving out between cool downs unless you have a super safe frontline ahead of you in team fights or during the lane in general going for big pokes.
I'm trying to think of choice is worth on cram because the hurricane damage doesn't matter much where's the second ability (surf) won't proc choice specs and is where the damage come from
Have been running wise glass and choice specs on Gardevoir lately and future sight and psyshock hits like a meteor.
Hey Jake I think the issue with your moves just randomly going somewhere is because of the "Move aim follow movement direction" option. I think in the past it was only when you started using the move it followed your movement, but now it's acting as if the left stick is basically another right stick.

We'll have to see exactly what strategies emerge to find better counterplays, but this is how I'll approach it at first 🙂
Bliyssey is the best counter

Wouldn’t ninetails benefit from sp. attack items on aurora veil since its basic attacks become boosted attacks using the special stat?
This, i need to see some stats related for how special attack boosted basic attacks is influenced by the sp attack stat
But its 27% on each hit and wise glasses increases dmg on the 27%, so its a very less dmg boost
Also from verlisify's video, the total dmg output of solar beam actually has a total increase of 1.2% only, instead of 5%

Does this seem like just a “win more” button or do you think there is some viability to what I’m running?
