I thought it was cute when Sarah rang the bell. She didn't think it would work. And to her surprise it did. Then showed us how it did work.
Funny how some towns change and others do not. Thanks for the tour.

If you watch out video on Fort Ross Sarah had the same reaction when she rings the bell there! Lol. I’m sure Barstow hasn’t grown all that much because of its extreme summer heat!

Wow!! Jeff you must have the Golden Ticket. I have been to the Barstow Harvey House a half Dozen Times & Never Caught it Open. That you got to go inside is Awesome. I've also been to Calico Ghost Town a half Dozen Times. I know that it used to be owned by Knotts Berry Farms. I Also Heard that it's Changed? I don't know if that's true because i haven't been there for years. I was just in Barstow 2 or 3 years ago & the Rancho Hotel was still standing. So sorry to hear that it Burned Down.

@@jbenziggy Anything related to railroad history always sparks my interest. As a boy, I always went to the railroad to watch the steam engines. I love the old steam engines. It is always nice to see the Union Pacific and others run the old restored steam engines and passenger trains. It keeps that era of history alive for younger generations to see. Thanks again Jeff for another well presented history episode. I laughed when Sarah rang that bell for the first time and the look of astonishment on her face. You both are great.

At 3:43, the grey RR car in the left background was a "special". It hauled race horses. A large ramp at one end provided for loading/unloading them. Years ago I spent a night at a Motel 6 on Barstow's west side. Horrible night because it was close to the RR switching yard. Heard strings of cars being moved and attached/unattached all night long. My family came west to So. CA in 1950 (I was 5), and we travelled Route 66 in a 1948 Studebaker Champion.

Some years ago AMTRAK ran a LA to Las Vegas route. I ordered Steak and Michelob in the dining car then everyone else did. Just like in the old TV commercial. They ran out of Michelob so the hostess called ahead pre cell phone days and the Budweiser delivery driver was on the Barstow train platform with several cases of “Mick.” Train made an unscheduled stop just to take on the beer.

Love that history, especially when it comes to railroad history! My wife and I would like to travel the entire Route 66 someday. Sorry that Sarah did not have the best experience at that hotel. Appreciate you two, looks like you will hit the 100K subs mark very soon. Look forward to your next video! 🇺🇲🚜👍

Jeff and Sarah, I really enjoyed your video and thank you so much for discussing Fred Harvey and the Fred Harvey restaurants. I live in Leavenworth Kansas and our historical County Museum has Fred Harvey's silverware. If you ever get a chance to go to Mount Muncie Cemetery, we also have the grave of Walter cronkite's mother buried there, and are only Kansas Resident was United States Supreme Court Justice is also buried there not far from where Fred Harvey buried. It is a beautiful cemetery and I go there quite a bit because my late mother is buried there. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful story.

Spent many days near Barstow CA when in the Army and training at Ft. Irwin. Coming and going from the railhead at Yermo we went there to stock up on pogey bait. I've also been to Calico Ghost town, I like the history there!

@@jbenziggy , you clearly invest so much research and heart into each production that I have very little to recommend for improvement. The only thing that bothers me is that Sarah’s attitude sometimes comes across as disinterested or bored, or in the case of this video, expressing negativity as the video opened.
