I am on this road quite frequently for work. For those of you into geocaching there are enough caches to keep you busy the entire trip. There is an Earthcache at the cafe in Ludlow that provides a wonderful story about Project Plowshare. I won't spoil it for you. If you see a white F550 with an SCE logo on the doors while you are on this road, be sure to wave to me.
Used to travel along that road many times traveling from Pasadena to Katherine's Landing on the Colorado River. One time traveled that route all the way to Missouri 180 miles short of its entire distance. Once upon a time long before Rout 40. At the time it was the only road.
Wow, what a great video. The still photographs are beautiful, and you explain things very clearly, like a good teacher. You make the Mojave desert very seductive as a place to visit, and even live.
Yikes !can not believe it seeing this after 70 years we left Barstow. Swam in this pool when living in the house next to Mt. Loved every minute too. Thanks for showing what progress can do to any place for the future.
This area can be very remote! I've been visiting this area for decades & have lived in the desert over 35 years. People from the city that aren't familiar with area's like this, its best to stick to the pavement! Don't take dirt roads your not familiar with. We have helped countless people in the past years, flats, stuck, overheated, you name it. Cell service is getting better but can be spotty, we have people die in the desert heat out here every year & people bit by Rattlesnakes often. BE PREPARED, Its a nice place but can get deadly real quick! Especially if your not familiar with it.
This portion of the road is not remote, all on pavement, and it's right next to I-40 all the way where there are thousands of people. It actually has better phone service than some parts of Los Angeles!
@@BackRoadsWest1 Im in areas where you won't see people for days with 0 cell service, i understand remoteness. But to SOME city people it is & their not careful or prepared. It dosen't matter if people are near by! We've had more than one TRAINED Marine get lost & die on the base, I had a lady get stuck about 1.5mi from my house sat down in the wash & died 100 yards from my house (i couldsee her body from my kitchen window when the corner came) , we have lost several in the last few years in the JT Park, i personally know 3 people in the last 2 years bitten by Rattlesnakes & almost die from it. This is my home, I've been exploring this area for 35 years, it doesn't have to be that "remote" for it to take your life. If someone underestimates the desert & it's inhabitants their a fool!
Haha, I had a high school boyfriend whose summer job was at the gas station in Ludlow! He stayed out there during the week, & got so lonely that he wrote me letters! This was before the interstate, it was a different world, like the end of the earth.
Is Ludlow still a dry town? My friend and I were riding our motorcycles across the desert from Yucca Valley in the 90's .We stopped for gas there. Went into the store . It was hot and we wanted beer. The clerk said " No alcohol in Ludlow"." This town is dry "! So we headed to west to Newberry Springs .Haven't been back since . Great Video!

Yes there was. All historians tell me this. And the one appearing in the movie was the actual inspection station. On the Az/NM border, yea, I put in that caption. It's an example since the only picture of the Daggett one is in the dark. Watch the video again.
I love these videos about Route 66. Just got back from Nevada/California state line and passed over 66 several times on way to L.A. I hope these old buildings and roads are preserved for ever. My dream is to travel 66 from one end to other end ? Is that still possible ? Keep up the great work.
Sadly, no… there have been multiple alignments of Route 66 over the decades, so there are places along the route where one would either have to select one of the alignments to travel on, or otherwise travel one, then backtrack along another. And unfortunately, there are sections that aren’t even accessible by automobile any longer.
I take that route all the time when I take my wife from Los Angeles to Laughlin and I could’ve swore at one time there was a sign in front of that old hotel in Daggitt stating that Wyatt Earp stayed there on his way to Alaska but it is no longer there. We always stop at the market to get Lottery tickets and ice
I do believe hearing that Wyatt Earp was there several times, but he was in a lot of places in San Bernardino County. There were a lot of famous places in Daggett. John Muir's daughter lived there, so he visited frequently.

Although I enjoy all the conveniences of modern interstate roads and modern vehicles, I feel like an "old soul" who was born too late to see this piece of Americana in its prime. Yup. The video mentions the Hector Mine. This was the name of that 1999 quake - the Hector Mine Earthquake. If you look closely using Google Earth, you can see the fault line that ruptured passing right through the mine's pit and southwest over Lavic Dry Lake.
If I'm traveling on Hwy 40 and hungry, I'd get off at Daggett and go north to Peggy Sue's Diner. Is the diner mentioned or shown in any of your videos of this area?

What is the economic logic for destroying, either deliberately or by neglect, roadside history. Is the State simply anti-history like most of America. There are probably ways these structures could be put to use as attractions or otherwise.
There's a simple answer - it takes money. Most roads and buildings are in ruins until someone figures out they're interesting. Route 66 is an exception for a lot of reasons. But look at all the other abandoned roads in the USA that have been replaced by interstates. US 99 on the west coast was earmarked to be on a sequel to the movie Cars. But the movie never materialized. If it did, you can bet that US 99 would have become more popular and people would have spent money on restoring/preserving it.
To anybody watching this. Check with CHP to see if road is open. Do not go around road closed signs unless you can prove you live in area, they will ticket you if not.
Interesting facts I must check-out on my next 66 loop (Up 15, get off (Victorville) and take 66 to Barstow, then this route to Amboy. Amboy Rd. to 29 palms, 29 palms to 10 fwy to back home). Need to see that Road (use to test cars for 200 MPH) that leads to a old house do not think is there anymore.
@@BackRoadsWest1 Yes, that is what I heard as well, no speed runs for me, just would like to see it, I guess it was constructed before I 40 and runs parallel to Fwy. Do you know if 66 heading East past Amboy is still closed-off about 5 miles down.
@@robertdavis5714 we were there a few weeks ago and it seemed the route was open from Ludlow to Kelbaker Road or the town of Chambless. From Chambless to Essex it's closed. I do know many of those bridges are way past their expected life and San Bernardino County roads dept is repairing them when they have funding. So it will be a wildcard as to openings and closings from Ludlow to US 95.

Ludlow is where the Amtrak Southwest Chief train derailed during the Oct 1999 earthquake.

No. We've eaten there many times over the past 2 decades. Passed by there last month and it was plenty busy.
My husband and me graduated from Barstow High We went back for 50 reunion it changed so much that is progress eh love your pictures of route 66 thanks

Good luck with the 200 mph part because, unless you drive a hovercraft, the road is in real bad shape.
