  • I modified the Milwaukee packout wheel cart so that the wheels were on the outside. This gave me more stability which is what I and many others were after. If you haven't seen my last video on the comparison between the trolley and the packout roller, then start there.
    The axle is 16mm and I cut it to 633mm to fit.

    For the bottom plate flipping up and down, just glue a rare earth magnet to the uprights on the frame, so when you flip the bottom plate up, the magnets will hold it there. As for the thru axle, not sure why they added registration notches to it, but in theory you could just drill it out and use a solid thru axle without needing to cut any notches in it.

    • @AddictedtoTools
      @AddictedtoTools  2 года назад +6

      Cheers mate. A few have recommended the magnet and I like the idea. I’m also not sure why they made the axle like that. Drilling out the holes would definitely be the easy way to do it. Cheers for the input👍

    Great idea.!!! I have a very tall stack of boxes on my original rolling toolbox I use to transport tools and lots of products. I recently fell while going down a steep driveway which made me rethink my tool and accessory storage. I'm aiming for a smaller load with the same volume which has been made possible with the new drawer boxes. I will be getting the new cart and drawer boxes. The modification is perfect. After seeing your video showing the tippyness of Milwaukee's version I was happy to find your vid. It was very well done. Cheers

      That sounds like the go. I’ve found a few places that should have something solid. Costing under $20. So it’s a cheap fix.
      At the moment I’m getting it out of the car once a week and keep it locked up on site. So not a huge problem. It’s easier than picking up the packout roller with tools in it though. It does take up more space though.

    How about cutting the existing axle in half while in place then couple it (slip the existing cut axle inside the pipe) together with a pipe with a 5/8" inner diameter, then drill holes thru the two, and use cotter pins prevent spinning? This way there's no need to disassemble the cart or the wheels. Basically extending the axle at the middle.

I would’ve liked to have seen the load carrying plate be able to lock in the up position as well as the down position. • @NorthernStarConstructionReno
      @NorthernStarConstructionReno 3 месяца назад

      An old thread, but someone may read this.
      The reason for the flat is to control where the wear takes place. If you just drill it out, the axel may rotate inside the cart, and that will wear the cart out, whereas if you lock the axel, and let the wheels rotate, the wear will occur on the wheels, and those can be replaced a lot easier than replacing the cart frame.

      I do like the carts idea more due to the modularity and dual purpose of it. I was only concerned as it does seem poorly built for $285, atleast Milwaukee has a lifetime warranty on it
      Was also thinking of making my own cart by either mounting a base rack to a normal hand trolley, or making up a nice base so that any hand trolley can be used

      @@jyttam i was thinking of doing the same thing but i think with the extended wheelbase it def seems much better (plus it’s got milwaukee stamped on it so i’m a sucker for that) haha

  • @ucitymetalhead

    Honestly I'd just get a regular hand cart and do like some have and mod it with a few attachment points cause honestly it'd be cheaper and probably sturdier too.

    I think you would have been far better off drilling the plastic housing out so the axle would pass through without weakening it and then possibly figure where to drill a hole through the housing and axle to insert a cotter pin to locate and stop the axle spinning.

    • @AddictedtoTools
      @AddictedtoTools  3 года назад +1

      That’s definitely another option. I usually try to not change anything on the gear itself unless necessary. I’ll be changing over to a solid bar, but if I need to I’ll do as you said👍🍻

    I almost flipped my packout multiple times and im afraid eventually im going to flip it over, unfortunately if i did this mod I wouldn’t be able fit my packout set in my tacoma truck bed, i have 2 deep drawers and one 3 drawer taking up one side of the truck bed and the wheel cart taking up the other side and they fit pretty tight already… but love your mods bro

      Yeah I’m thinking the same. Once I find a suitable solid rod, I’ll swap it over. Sure is more stable though. Cheers👍🍻

    It would have been easier to modify the hole on the handcart to fit the new rod instead of cutting the rod and compromising its integrity.

    why not just drill the plastic and use a solid axle? you should order some 3" x10" wheels from magliner 111080 microcellular

      Hey Frank. When I do modifications, I’m not sure if they will work or if I’ll keep it. So I usually like to make minimal changes to the original product in the beginning. That’s just me though. If I go to a solid bar, I’ll probably just drill out the plastic. I’ll have to check out the wheels. Thanks for the recommendation 👍

    I just did this but I put tires on it with some actual beefy tread and eliminated those stoppers for the plate and will be putting on a strong magnet but instead of notching the axle I just took a torch and heating the axle up and pushed it through the notch on both sides and it works perfectly

    Love the mod and I am now looking to modify my set. I do diesel mechanic so most of my tools are rather heavy and even in slight uneven surfaces I had it almost drip over with just two boxes. I now have more boxes so definitely need to do this.
