  • Sleep paralysis is a relatively common phenomenon in which someone experiences a state of immobility just before falling asleep or upon awakening. In this video, I discuss what might be happening in the brain to cause sleep paralysis.
    TRANSCRIPT:
Sleep paralysis is a relatively common phenomenon in which someone experiences a state of immobility just before falling asleep or upon awakening. People who experience sleep paralysis are awake and generally aware of their surroundings during the episode; they typically can open
their eyes but are otherwise unable to move. On average, an episode only lasts several minutes. During an episode of sleep paralysis a person may also experience hallucinations and abnormal sensations, including perceptions that there is someone else in the room, out-of-body experiences, and feelings of suffocation or choking. Some have hypothesized that these types of experiences may be the basis for various accounts of supernatural and other unusual encounters, such as contact with ghosts, demons, and aliens.
Although sleep paralysis is not fully understood, it is generally believed to occur due to an overlap between REM sleep and wakefulness. During REM sleep, neurons in the pons act to inhibit motor neurons in the spinal cord, causing a pervasive loss of muscle movement. And yet, there is a great deal of brain activity occurring in REM sleep, and it is the stage of sleep when we typically experience our most vivid dreams. Sleep paralysis is thought to either involve a failure to activate neurons that inhibit REM sleep or a hyperactivation of neurons that promote REM sleep during a time when a person is either waking or falling asleep. Thus, they experience aspects of REM sleep that spill over into wakeful consciousness. Despite being awake they experience the paralysis that occurs during REM sleep and sometimes hallucinations that resemble experiences more likely to occur in dreams. The feelings of suffocation or choking that some report might be due to difficulty breathing deeply caused by interference with normal respiratory muscle function that occurs in REM sleep.

I have occasionally suffered from this. It's absolutely horrifying, these hauntings produced from some dark place within. And, I've always known they weren't real... But when the attacks are occurring, they might as well be - because I hear, feel, and smell them. This disorder has at times made my life Hell on Earth.

At least you knew it wasn't real. I actually thought I was haunted by a demon and didn't really open up about it.....when I did people would just reply that it's a nightmare to which I'd argue that I'm awake, etc. once I finally did some research and found that I was suffering from sleep paralysis, it happened less and although it's still scary, it isn't as terrifying.
I see you had audio....I usually didn't have audio episodes, but the one time it happened, it scared the crap out of me...actually that episode led me to talk to friends and research it. In short, it was repeating things like "Die, kill yourself!"

People actually strive to achieve that state of mind, to be in a more mindful space. The reason you're experiencing an unpleasant experience is because the first thing that consumes you is FEAR. You must learn to overcome this, to have what you may consider a curse into a blessing. To cut your journey short, understand your dreams are a reflection of your spirit.

I experienced this a lot growing up but less now as an adult. It usually happens if you are groggy and napping during the daytime. It is a frightening and frustrating experience as you are completely paralyzed and unable to move but aware that you are in a state of half awake and half asleep. You can hear voices of people in the house but to them you are asleep. You try to move a finger or force yourself to fall off of the bed or sofa to wake up. I usually break the paralysis by concentrating really hard on waking up and moving a pinky. It feels like 30 minutes or longer but it is not. Sometimes you are unable to break paralysis and will end up back in REM deep sleep because you are too tired to fight it.

See if you can have a sleep study done. I no longer experience SP since I started wearing a cpap. Your symptoms were exactly like mine. It's causing stress to your heart and you might even start to experience short term memory issues. If you dream that you're underwater and can't breathe, or you have gum stuck down your throat, that's your subconscious telling you that you are having an apnea during sleep.

This just happened to me and I had the need to investigate this because it is the second time it has happened to me. The first time was too scary, I couldn't move, I felt a terrible weight on me as if they were sinking me into the bed and I felt that someone was watching me even though no one was in the room. And now the sensation was different because I was lying on my back. I didn't feel the weight on me, but I heard whispers as if someone was speaking very softly and the sounds were getting closer to me. I heard it twice and looked at my window thinking it was a sound from outside, but it felt very close to me. It scared me a lot because I didn't want to feel like that for as long as it happened the first time, so I tried to say the name of God and I said Jesus and although I couldn't move I did have the sensation that my lips were moving and in a few seconds I was able to move completely. It's amazing that just doing that woke me up so quickly and I wanted to share it with you. Thank you for reading.

I had one of my more extreme episodes a minute ago on-and-off right after I had a dream so I knew what was happening to me. I can’t even count the times I’ve had it, it’s been continuous for years and sometimes I can go over a month without it then get it consecutive nights in a row or multiple times in one day. Generally if I am disturbed in some way or THINK about getting it gets me my highest chances.

I too have had that. I always sleep on my back and it was always whispers but it got so bad that I couldn’t even say Jesus. I couldn’t move at all and the whispers started to say things like I’m going to kill you. Eventually I saw the thing in my room to the right of me. The aura it gives off is what I think paralyzes you. It filled me with dread and terror and I genuinely thought I was going to die but I can never truly convey to someone who hasn’t experienced it themselves, what it really feels like. It eventually spoke its name to me but I don’t remember it anymore and I couldn’t find it online back then. The first time it happened, I ran out of my house down the street and stood there while I tried to figure out what to do. I was 19 at the time and in a very dark place. Once I started taking adderrall is when it went away.

Surprisingly, I have not felt paralyzed since I commented here. I've abandoned my penchant for scary movies and violent video games like Call of Duty. Embracing prayer at least twice a week has become a newfound source of solace, drawing me closer to God. While medications may be beneficial for some, my remedy has been this spiritual shift. I share my experience in the hope that others may find inspiration to explore alternative paths toward well-being.

In elementary school I was bullied to the point of considering any way out, also I was experiencing Sleep Paralysis episodes nearly every night.
I was about 14 years old and I hadn't told anybody about that at the time, I didn't really trust anybody back then.
My first experience was such a trauma that it happened for a few more nights. I woke up, couldn't move, breathing was hard and I saw a dark figure that faded to nothing in that dark room, I tried to look up and I remember it appearing on my chest and directly looking into my eyes from a very close distance.
I knew that it should not be possible to experience such similar situations night by night, I thought i was the one that induced it by being afraid of the episode happening again.
Eventually, I tried to interact with the "creature" and when I figured out how to make it "talk" by just thinking about it, was such a strange experience, scary and exciting at the same time,
shortly after the first few words I recover.
About 6 years ago i left that school and continued my studies elsewhere, the problem seems to be solved and i did not experience any episodes randomly, but I can still induce one If I am subject to high levels of stress but almost every night, I have Lucid dreams and as soon as i wake up, I have a recollection of what i was dreaming about.

Wanna ask you a question while this is still fresh.
So i think i can frequently recreate sleep paralysis (self proclaimed) by intentionally keeping my self as conscious as possible when i am extremely sleepy.
This cannot always happen it has to be during midnight.
So before i am able to fall back to sleep if i force my consciousness to be around i will enter sleep paralysis. At this point i can be totally awake, not feeling sleepy but i just cant move. Is this SP?
I am also not seeing ghost but i just cant move. I either fall asleep as is, or force myself extremely hard to break it, usually in less than what feels like 30 seconds. I cant always break it sometimes i will just stay paralyzed so i just fall back asleep just so ghost image wont start appearing.
Usually ghost only appears in unintended SP (after i wake up from a long time sleep) for me, if i force myself into SP, i wont see any ghost (this is induced SP shortly after i wake up midnight, and force myself to be conscious while feeling sleepy)
Please lmk if any of this sound logical

I only ever experienced sleep paralysis once, and it was at a friend's house.
I had an auditory hallucination and heard a terrifying demonic voice keep saying blood...blood... blood. It was every 5-10 seconds and sounded like it was in the next room getting closer and closer to me. I was able to look around but it felt like a blanket was overtop of me and my body was asleep.
I tried so hard to get up and managed to sit up a few inches. I tried again as hard as I could and sat up probably about 6-12 inches then made a loud groan which was actually hilarious. That groan, combined with falling about 6-12 inches, woke up my body and I was about to move again, I laughed at the sound I made and just went back to sleep.
I knew what sleep paralysis was at that time but was still truly afraid when it happened. It was like a sense of dread washed over me when woke up and looked around but felt my body was asleep and could still hear everything around me, and then that creepy voice sealed the deal. I couldn't imagine experiencing that as a kid and not knowing what it is! That would give me nightmares for months!
Anyway, the next day I told my friends about my sleep paralysis and reenacted what happened to me and they died laughing 😂
I was sleeping in their livingroom on a futon couch they had, and if someone were to walk past me at that time, they would have probably thought I was posessed!
The weird thing was we bought a Ouija board the time before that when I stayed over previously, but never used it and idk where they put it but maybe I was almost attacked that night by a ghostie 👻

Yep. Many many times I've experienced this. I took the time to try and figure it out. The sensation of having something or someone on your chest... that's not the best description. I know exactly what that is. It's the fact that you're in a panic... and even though your heart might be racing (or at least it SHOULD be from your point of view), you're rate of breathing remains as it does in your sleep. When you want to scream but have no control of your breath, that's a problem and it severely compounds the overall sense of horror. I could never open my eyes, or speak, or move... unless I concentrated for all I was worth. Once I could move just a bit (like when you twitch from a dream), then I'd wake. And ya, you CAN learn to control it "from the inside"... if you can calm down, just come up with a scenario and let your mind take over. Invent your own dream... and it works. Then all of a sudden your waking up hours later. Unfortunately, it had to happen almost nightly for me to get ahead of it. But, once I did it was no longer anything to fear. In fact, I enjoyed it.

I started getting SP when I was a kid, which led to sedative/alcohol abuse in high school. I had to quit everything when I was pregnant, and my episodes were so bad I couldn't sleep at all. They would happen riiiight as I was falling asleep, and I'd have to wake up. They initially thought I had {?} post-withdrawal syndrome {?}, and then they blamed the stress of having 2 babies. No one would listen to me that this had been a lifelong problem. My dad and brother also have it. Finally in 2007 I got hospitalized because I was was awake for so long my body shut down. They put me on Ambien, which miraculously stopped the episodes and helped me sleep, and scheduled me for an intake at a sleep clinic to see if I had apnea. Long story short, after 2 tests I was diagnosed with Recurrent Isolated Sleep Paralysis, which means I don't have any disorder causing it. The doctor said I just have "bad sleep architecture", and also that being a back-sleeper was triggering my episodes. I went though Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which was immensely helpful, and trained myself {mostly} not to sleep on my back. From what I was told, back sleeping, sleep deprivation, and stress are the trifecta triggers that almost guarantee an episode 😕

It's a natural thing. Your brain cease your body's ability to move to prevent sleep walking. And to talk, so that you don't speak out your dreams.
However there are two things that the brain doesn't paralyse. The eyes and the diaphram. This is why your eyes can still move when you are asleep and dreaming. You are also able to breathe. If you open your eyes, you will hallucinate, so it's better to keep them closed. There is also nothing on top of you, but because you are aware, you are able to sense your body's weight plus your inability to move, it feels as though there is something on you, but there is actually nothing.

I experience this a lot. It’s not really scary at all to me. I can usually break myself out of it by concentrating on moving my head. You start by slowly rocking your head from side to side. Once you have a little bit of momentum you whip your head like you’re trying to flip your hair. If you do that hard enough it snaps you out of it. I just don’t have the balls to allow myself to go back to sleep with the dark shapes and weird noises. So I always wake myself up and re-fall asleep.
This happens to me very often. I imagine it’s because of my random wake and sleep times. I am a Paramedic and don’t really have the best sleep schedule. It’s part of the job though.

Had this regularly as a teen. It started after I tried lucid dreaming for a while (don't know if it was related). Was scary as hell. I ended up finding out that if I ignore it and don't try to wake up, it vanishes quickly. It became way less scary and eventually never happened again.

I also tend to be more tired on days that I get more sleep. I do also have some mental issues that I'm going through and on weeks where it's worse I tend to have more sleep paralysis. Hope that info helps anyone.

I suffer from this from time to time, I stil don’t realize if stress/tiredness factors are factors for me. One thing I observed that were common in all of them is having one member (arm, leg, etc.) being “stuck”, e.g.: sleeping over my arm, putting my feet between the desk and wall if sleeping in the office, etc.
Today was the first time I felt most in control of the situation, the only issue was I felt like I was going to flip backwards on my chair lol, but I realized right away that was a sleep paralysis.

I suffer with SP. Just had an episode 2 mins before watching this. But I've never been able to open my eyes when it happens. I can hear everything around me like the youtube video I was just watching as I fell asleep but can't move or open eyes. For anyone that's never experienced it, it's scary at first as you're paralysed but conscious. Trying to move but can't. Luckily it only lasts maybe 10 seconds but feels like a lifetime.

First time when I had sleep paralysis, I got so afraid but then researched about it and it never came since then but today I experienced it one more time and I came to know what was common in that time and today's time.
I have a habit of covering myself with sheets. But today and that day I was sleeping without any cover.. And it only comes whenever I sleep alone.. So I have reached to conclusion that I can avoid it.
And one more thing when today I got sleep paralysis I was sleeping sideways.. So there was no demon, not any voice.. And I only had one thing in my mind.. Move, move yourself.. Get the hell out of this state.. You can do it.. No one can make me afraid.. I also realized no matter how much I moved.. There was not even an inch difference but then also I believed myself, kept trying and fell into deep sleep again and when I woke up I felt so refreshed.

as someone who've had a lot of sleep paralysis, here is the cure!
step 1. close your eyes back
step 2. breath in deeply then breath out
    step 3. repeat step 2
step 4. when you know the timing of your own breath, open your eyes super quickly while breathing out heavily!
step 5. (if you know its sleep paralysis, just laugh it out lol) think of "not this shit again lol".
    your welcome!

I dont know what I saw years ago is a sleep paralysis or not- I was sleeping on the top of a bunk bed and I woke up randomly at night. It wasnt pitch dark. Then I called out my youngest sister's name and asked her to bring me a glass of water (while I was doing this I didnt know why I was doing it- Like why would I call someone's name while my whole family is asleep??) Then someone entered from the door, it was my youngest sister but it was more like a black shadowy figure that looked like my sister and the figure had a faint green glow to it. It didnt have eyes or anything like that. It approached me and held to the side of my bunk bed. It didnt have a face but it was staring at me. I freak out, I still feel kind of scared when I remember it. I hid under my blanket and tried my best to hold my breath. I dont know how I fell back to sleep but yeah- Ive tried searching something about this but I couldnt really find anything that's the same as mine. I was able to move so it wasnt a sleep paralysis? One of my friends told me that it might have been an evil skinwalker because of the green aura and all. Idk man, it's weird

I tried to wake up but I was not able to move after some minutes I came back in my sense... It was terrifying.. Then I searched about this,, and now I'm facing it 1-2 times a week..now the dreams are more horrifying I can't even tell.. But I think that it is because of sleeping schedule whenever I try to sleep in the morning or day time I get them.. And also I'm a overthinker so I don't sleep fast usually but when those dreams wants to come,, I get in sleep in 2 min and that's the plus point because I get to know that they are coming so I salp myself and try to wake me up so I don't get them because when you sleep in this shit this thing will happen with you again and again and you can't wake up easily because the sleep don't let you.. 😮‍💨

I have figured out that forcing yourself to stay awake late and then trying to sleep causes me to slip into paralysis. When I maintain a healthy sleep schedule I never have the issue. Otherwise when I’m up all night as late as 2am or later I’m almost guaranteed to have it hit me. Lately my wife and I have been up to feed our newborn baby throughout the night and at times it’ll hit me when I’m trying to go back to sleep in the early am. When it hits me I have all kinds of experiences such as seeing shadow monsters, I can hear ear-splitting screams in my ears, I’ll have out of body adventures where I’m running through endless corridors being chased by raging zombies, ill even hallucinate breaking out of it just to find out I’m still stuck and can’t move over and over again. Sleep paralysis is torcher. So just get to bed on time and let your mind rest. Cheers!

i decided to take a nap during the day in my room and it was bright. I thought I had woke up as I could see my bright white room and my ceiling clearly, I could hear my brother and my mum talking in the room beside me. As I tried to get up I realised I was paralysed and this created an unexplainable sense of fear. I started trying to shout for help into the other room but it felt like I was shouting into a vacuum. Started feeling like i couldn’t breathe properly. I looked at my ceiling and demon faces started appearing. I felt a strange force that started to pull me down my bed from my feet but it didn’t feel like hands. The force was strong and overpowering and I felt useless. I ended up on the floor but the woke up to reality that it was a dream. Seriously scared to go to sleep incase this happens again.

I also suffer from serious insomnia/disruptive sleep after I was run over by a semi truck at 19 yrs old.
My guess is a traumatic shock to my hypothalamus as I've had hormonal disruption since.
Some Drs.think there's a connection between brain trauma and fibromyalgia based on a good amount of circumstantial evidence.
It occured to me that advancements in neural augmentation efforts(like Neuralink) might be the most productive route to understanding brain dysfunction mapping?

I get this all the time and it’s quite different from the way sleep paralysis is often explained. I cannot open my eyes and there are absolutely no ghostly/demonic hallucinations. Sometimes it happens to me during a dream/nightmare which usually manifests itself as me being paralyzed (stuck in a tiny claustrophobic space or smothered in something that’s incredibly heavy) or feeling too intoxicated (like being super drunk, but being fully aware of the mistakes you’re making) to move properly, like you’re uncontrollably stumbling everywhere until you finally fall and cant get up. If it happens in between sleeping and being awake, I have it sometimes happen at the point of going to sleep as well as at the point of waking up. I’m just stuck with my eyes closed trying to desperately move a limb enough to get the momentum to fall off the bed because I know that will wake me up… Although it never works. 😐

I don't have ghost/demon hallucinations either; just "urgent" things I have to wake up from, like my phone ringing or my sink being left on.

I was plagued by SP very frequently from age 17 to age 36. It went away once I started using a cpap. The base of my tongue is enlarged so sleep apnea happens. The lack of O2 to the brain creates a similar effect as the hallucinations that fighter pilots have when they pull too many G's and pass out. It has something to do with the brain suddenly being unable to locate the body due to lack of oxygen. RadioLab had a hood episode on this phenomenon although it didn't include Sleep Paralysis.

I just experienced this the other day, thankfully nothing horrifying. I was aware that I was sleeping/dreaming and tried my best to wake up but I really couldn't. I then tried to move my fingers and then pinched my stomach as hard as I could, that's when I finally woke up... it felt like I was able to breathe normally again. Experiencing this sucks a lot!!!

My sleep paralysis is random. I used to see a shadowy figure when I was younger and saw one time a man with a long top hat.
I find it comes in waves, I’ll get it a lot then will go awhile not having it.
If I nap during the day or sleep on my back, it increases my chance of getting sleep paralysis.
I tried to astroproject once, the problem is I’m so terrified I try everything to get myself out of it.

I had my first experience this moring. I am 21 years old and as i already know about sleep paralysis and what happenes i didn't panic. I was terrified and my heart rate increased but I assured myself this will end soon. I was sleeping on my back with my right arm on my forehead. I couldnt move but i had this electric feeling as if like i was a machine or if something electric just weighed on me. There was a strange buzzing noice too. Every inch of my body wanted to react to it but couldn't. I saw a shadow looming over me not clearly but i did, i could close my eyes . So i closed my eyes and waited.

Okay. I need to get it out via RUclips because it's 2am and I'm freaked out. I've struggled with sleep paralysis before during times of trauma / depression. It's just been a little over 1 year since I've had one. Last semester a friend of mine had a tonic clonic seizure that I witnessed / called the ambulance for. I guess with finals / summer my brain just stuffed it down and didn't process it. Tonight I was caught in a 3 cycle loop. I dreamt I was walking around campus, in a dark moody atmosphere and my facial expressions mimicked hers. I felt my body distort similar to a demonic force taking over me. It felt like hell, and I kept thinking what is happening and why I keep coming back here. It was so painful. Anyways. Google/ videos like this help. The brain is crazy, and would love to get some real rest 😮‍💨

I've suffered sleep paralysis for over 3 years now. The first time I had a episode was so frightening, I felt like I was gonna die. Now it's nothing and I do not fear it at all. I did find a way to prevent it however usually when I'm bored whilst going to sleep I purposely let it happen so I can watch the show. To prevent it you have to sleep on your side, not your back. Apparently sleeping on your back prevents it much more. This method works for me, too. I'm still kind of scared when I get sleep paralysis since the latest time I've got one 3 weeks ago, and 2 days I think one of the hallucinations walked up to me and jumped on my chest 😳 I immediately opened my eyes because I was relaxing and then boom i felt the pressure of something or someone standing on my chest, opening up my eyes to finding some tall pale man on my chest. After a few seconds it got out luckily. I really thought I was gonna die. I am never gonna experience this again... it's scary even after 3 years of experience..😫

today I had a different sleep paralysis though which is strange, Today I dreamed and for some reason I had an eye open and this one was occuring in live and my other eye was closed but it was "dreaming" of some sort, According to my dreams, I was pushing myself with my arms but i was damn sure I was in my sleep paralysis, Weird thing is that I was actually moving my head from one side to another, But my arms we're still, To the point where the sleep paralysis broke but I was in a different position...

Since i’ve heard so many things (peoples screaming, bell’s ringing, someone praying, etc) and every sounds and voices that i’ve heard feels like real. The worst part is i can understand every word that „this person” is praying for. Eventually i tried to get up. In my mind i was already standing still, but in reality i was still laying in bed💀💀

Astral -projection = atonia (paralysis to prevent hurting yourself or someone else during REM sleep), which means loss of bodily perception of the body, which is experienced as floating as you know longer feel the pressure of gravity, bedding etc. And shadow people - we’re like a kid with a fever in a dark room, so a coat becomes a moving figure etc. as we have REM activity while in a conscious state.

If I’m experiencing a vivid dream and it get cut short, I’ll open my eyes. I’m thinking I just woke up, only to realize I can see what’s in front of me but not able to move a muscle. I realize what’s going on and just keep trying to tell myself to actually wake up. After about a real time minute or so I wake up and can move again. I tend to sleep with background noise like music or YT videos as it relaxes me. Complete silence will make the situation worse for me. If I’m in that paralyzed state, I’ll probably hallucinate random sounds and think something’s coming around the corner. 😂
