The Offspring is technically skate-punk. They are from Orange County California, the home of Skate Punk and Ska. Same as No Doubt, Social Distortion, Adolescents, Middle Class. Orange County California has a huge history of Punk from the 70s to the present.
@dragonfire1842 Definitely not grunge or metal. another thing is that they were on Epitaph records. That's a punk label started by frontman of Bad Religion. Go listen to the song Jennifer Lost The War, Session, Blackball or Nitro Kids. Pretty much anything that isn't a single.
Fun fact: Bryan Keith "Dexter" Holland, the lead singer, attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a BSc in biology and an MSc in molecular biology. He suspended his studies to focus on music when the Offspring found success in 1994, but later resumed and earned a PhD in molecular biology in May 2017
And that explains why he took no shit from the band member who was putting them all at covid risk and kicked him out, a biologist wasn’t about to let some antivax nonsense slide
Fun fact: The intro with the dad talking to the guy pseudo-German ("gunter gliben glauten globen" or whatever) is actually a sample from Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages" which back then, similar as here was used instead of the traditional '1-2-3-4' to start the song.
Gone Away is probably my favorite song of theirs. It's a hard one for me to listen to because of memories attached to it. I lost my grandmother a few years ago, and the first thing I did when I found out was pick up my guitar that I hadn't touched in over a year and learned to play this, played it loud as hell with tears in my eyes.

IKR? I'm very catchy riff. "Come out and play" - - you could listen to it for years and not realize how serious of a song it is, because of their sound.
@@justinman114 The album that followed it (Conspiracy of One) would have been great if Americana never existed, but kinda came off like a parody of it.

They all started out as punk rockers. Offspring is sort of the intersection of SoCal punk and the 90s grunge sounds, but with super catchy pop friendly hooks. All their big hits are bangers, I think you’ll enjoy this rabbit hole.
The Kids Aren't Allright, Gone Away, Come Out And Play, You're Gonna Go Far. I got to see these guys live when they first hit the scene and they were crazy. Good times. They have banger after banger.
I spent the summer of 1999 going up and down the M5 taking my teenage son to rehab following an accident, we listened to The Offspring on the way down and back and used to sing it at the top of our voices. Brighten up a rubbish time! I had to buy the album for myself when my son left home! 🤣🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The Offspring are one of the many post-Grunge bands that skyrocketed up the charts in the wake of the huge grunge bands dissolving. The Kids Aren't Alright is genius.
Glad you loved the song, defiantly explore more Offspring!! The Kids Aren’t Alright is probably the thing next, then later there’s Gone Away, You’re Gonna Go Far Kid, Come Out And Play, Why Don’t You Get A Job, and much more!!
Greetings from Finland man!!! It's awesome to see you getting into music that i heard in my childhood and as a teenager and early adulthood... Awesome times and so many good memories ❤ "i'll be back" 😎
I grew up in the 90's as a teen and young adult, and found punk rock (skate punk) around 1996. I was discovering bands such as NOFX, Lagwagon, Strung Out, Good Riddance, Green Day, Propagandhi and Pennywise. The Offspring were not a band I was really into but they were part of that scene and style. It was very much underground over here in the UK, and the whole look that went with it (baggy jeans, t-shirts, DC's, hoodies, spiky hair etc) was pretty alternative and unfashionable. It was an amazing time, almost like a small underground cult of society. When this song came out, it went very mainstream and got to no.1 in the UK singles chart. A lot of (alt) people weren't keen on the song because of that, and it was a bit of a novelty song compared to their other stuff. But over 25 years later it's aged OK and is a lot of fun.
"You're Going to Go Far, Kid" is another one of theirs that is just great. They have a _lot_ of amazing songs, totally worth going through and listening to them.
This band was very impressive live as well. They were heavy guitars with a hip hop approach. I remember how spot on they were live with the vocals and the guitarist just slayed it. Yes, very skate punk influenced.
You should react to DEF LEPPARD’S Rock of Ages song and see where the intro to this song came from. Chose a live performance from the Hysteria tour in 88 if you react to it. You will LOVE Def Leppard.
I was 19 in the early 90’s. It was a total blast! Punk rock, skater punk, ska, rap, metal, reggae, it was all fun! So many bands to see in small venues for a couple of bucks, well known bands for $12-$20. All day music festivals with multiple stages were under $100. I smoked out so many members of my favorite bands. It was such a great time to be young. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.
This is definitely one of their best songs. The next song to do is Why Don't You Get A Job, as it sort of follows on from this song. Others are Gone Away, Come Out And Play and The Kids Aren't All Right and All I Want.
This song was everywhere when it came out. I think I know this video by heart although I hadn’t seen it for about 20 years, coz it was on MTV on repeat.
Dexter Holland is a genius. Literally. I would highly recommend reacting to “Gone Away”, which will give you another example of their versatility. It’s a bloody sad song. Keep on doing these reactions Molly boy 👍👍👍👍
Skateboarding was huge back then. We even had the trousers. You could bearly walk but we had them lol. Don't go out on a windy day lol. I miss my skateboard.
This song was hugely popular when I was around 22. It is so poking fun at a whole bunch of tropes and trends going on at the time. You are right, this is kind of unique.
We've seen The Offspring 3 times in Denver and Red Rocks (I was 6 months pregnant at the first one 🤪). Still one of the best bands ever! Glad you enjoyed them!
Offspring banger master to me: All I Want. True californian classic 90s punk rock! Awesome lyrics, sick guitar rifs, fast drums and catchy melodic vocals! Offspring at Lollapalooza 2024 live gig is 10/10. Grandpa Dexter & Noodles stokin hard!
I said it on the first one and I will say it again, masters of the hook. All the songs are different in their own way, but they all have a killer hook that you can't get out of your head. Dive deeper man, keep that Offspring coming and you will not be disappointed.
I can confirm, being 14 - 24 yrs during the 90s... an epic time to grow up and some great music. Love your channel and to track your music discoveries... ❤ The Offspring tip: Ignition (1992) and Smash (1994), both fantastic albums with epic tracks!
Nice reaction! Looking forward to your continuing exploration of The Offspring. Also, I can't emphasize enough how neither Self Esteem (though very good) nor this song are their top offerings. Highly recommend you check out The Kids Aren't Allright, Gone Away, and You're Gonna go Far Kid
The Offspring have been one of my favorite bands alongside Bad Religion since I was a teenager. I got my start with their Americana album. Staring At The Sun and Americana got me hooked instantly.
"The kids aren't alright" will blow your mind!
Iconic. A take on the Who's The Kids are Alright. Also, reminds me of Jim Carroll's "People Who Died."
@@glenkrisch4844 GWAR's version of that surpasses the amazing original IMO
Fact. Americana is arguably one of the best albums ever made.
" Come out and play" is one of their biggest hits.

Yes do this offspring song next
Their best song.

"Gone Away" for a more serious song that shows another sound/style from them. Banger!

When the guitar comes in, I mentally overlay the repeating guitar lick from “COME OUT AND PLAY” (Gotta Keep ‘em Separated). 😉

When that bass comes in right after Nitro, you can't help but turn the volume up just a touch bit more. If that's even possible!
