  • Taking the "Couch to 5K" challenge. This is week 1 where I try to remember how to run after several decades of avoiding doing just that. Can I manage to do a 5K run in just 9 weeks? This is week 1 where we'll begin to see whether this is a challenge I can get off the ground.

    only recently i found out about couch to 5k (now i see it's so popular! i must have been living under a rock!) and immediately i started looking for people online who decided to take on the challange. i've got to say you're the best person i could find, truly! you are super positive about the experience but you don't fake enthusiasm, you are funny and also encouraging. C25K was supposed to be one of my new year's resolutions but your series made me ask myself "why not now?" and just an hour ago i managed to complete day one.
    i'm very proud of myself and i just wanted to take a second and thank you for these vids.
    all the best for you and your family & friends in the new year!!

      Hi Maggie. Thank you for your very kind comments. I'm so pleased that you found the videos helpful. If you're like me you'll find hurdles to jump along the way (not literally I hope!) but that just makes the achievement all the more sweeter! The best advice I can offer is to take it steadily and not go too fast, although everyone's different and will meet the challenge in the best way for them. I wish you every success with the programme. All the very best with the coming weeks and a Happy New Year to you and yours. You can do it!!! Kind regards, Andy.

      Hi Emma Jay. Thanks for your kind comment. Great to hear. I wish you every success with the programme. It works! Everyone is different, so there will be runs that you'll find harder than others. I know I did. Hi SB. There's no doubt that C25K is a shock to the system, however the hard part is getting out there and you've done that! I'm pleased to hear you're recovering from COVID-19 and wish you well as you regain your fitness. It might be an idea to speak to a medical professional if you haven't already to make sure that you tackle the programme in the right way for someone who has had coronavirus. All the very best. Thanks so much for watching. Good luck!! 😀 Andy.

The best advice I can offer you is not to go too fast. You may feel you're too slow to start off with (I still feel like that even now) however it makes sense to pace yourself and gradually build up stamina. Great to see your progress, I did my 3rd one today, resting tomorrow and hope to stick to this.
    I hate running at slow pace usually, I did 100m/200 at school 2 decades ago lo and played tennis too. However found myself so unfit and out of breath at the slightest of movement.

      @@TheRamblyChannel Hi Andy. Update: I ran for a few times and then I hurt my ankle.
      I had so much pain I couldn't support myself properly. So I rested. For weeks.
      Then I went on a vacation for nearly a month (Gran Canaria) and I ran a few times on the beach.
      Any tips for how not to hurt myself and how do you keep it up?
      I'm in a rut, how do I get out of it?

    • @HKarlsson
      @HKarlsson 5 лет назад

      Btw, I made real progress during the times I ran. Faster, longer and with improvements all over the place.
      The only reason I see of why I hurt myself is: Experience.
      I have never worked out like that. Or, it was 15 years ago when I boxed.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  5 лет назад

      @@HKarlsson Hi @S GD So sorry to hear you're carrying an injury. So annoying. I'm far from being an expert on such things, however I've been told that footwear is important. It can get quite technical apparently and there's even something called a gait analysis that some running shoe shops can do that helps to determine the correct footwear for your running style. It's all theoretical as I have no personal experience of it at all. My other half hurt her leg during week 5 of C25K over a year ago. She was OK after a week or two, but she says she can still tell where she hurt her leg (occasionally gives her a pang!) and even after more than 12 months she doesn't have the confidence to try running again. She's taken up cycling instead! If you can afford it, then perhaps a physio could give you some expert advice as the last thing you want to do is go back to running too early and do more damage. I really hope you get sorted out. Thanks for letting me know. I will be sending positive vibes in your direction!! Regards, Andy.

      Hi Joanne. I was the same as you at first and achey too! I'm no expert however I discovered after a while that doing some stretching helps. There's information about this on the HealthUnlocked.com web site so definitely worth reading what the experts have to say about it as you want to stretch properly and not listen to the random suggestions of some bloke off the internet! I wish you well with C25K, it's a great programme. I suggest pacing yourself and not trying to go too fast, although your experience could be different to mine. Finally found an app available in Canada that works well! (Justrun). Wish I could get Sarah Millican to encourage me instead of some sort of robot lady, but it does what I need! I may purchase the upgrade to get different robot folks eventually.
    I ran quite a bit in grade school in running clubs and cross country teams (not fast, I was the slowest on any team!) but haven't really since besides a few attempts at getting back at it that never lasted long. I've been feeling a huge desire to get back to it lately, so here I go!

    very interesting that the couch 2 5 k app didn't tell you to stretch, that's why you were aching 24 hours later - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Reminds me to do some proper stretching advice on my vids, but there are loads out there. Stretching is so key for all exercise, even on days off it is well worth stretching to keep things supple. Well done though (I know I'm commenting a year late haha).

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  5 лет назад +1

      Hi @Recreational Runner It mentions stretching at some point early on in the programme, but not in the first week. Probably not necessary when you're only running for a few short 60 seconds bursts. When it does mention it, it doesn't go into detail (as far as I can remember) but instead points you at other resources for further advice (perhaps it was Health Unlocked although I could be imagining that). Regards, Andy.

      @RecreationalRunner 5 лет назад

      @@TheRamblyChannel cool. I've never looked at a couch to 5k, but the fact you were aching means it should be in there from the start really, especially as it doesn't seem to give you a guide on how fast you should be running the intervals as well...so that will vary wildly between people with some potentially hammering it and then getting put off very quickly maybe?
      I am now exploring Heart Rate training myself for the first time in 7 years and really think it could be the way forward for any beginner as well, because naturally your own HR will dictate how much effort you need to apply to get it increasing and I'm finding that I need to slow down tonnes and I'm enjoying it more and not getting so fatigued, so I'm guessing for a complete beginner there will be plenty of walking to start with anyway - I'm looking for guinea pigs as we speak :-) Anyway I'm banging on your video, sorry.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  3 года назад

      Hi Jenn. I have an iPhone and it worked fine playing music using the built in music app with C25K working in the foreground. I don't know if the Android version works the same, but probably does. I haven't tried it with Spotify, but again can't see why it wouldn't work. Best thing to do is to try it and see - you can always test it before you go out for your first run to make sure it'll work as you want it to. On the first few runs of C25K you do quite a bit of walking so you may get away with no background music. It might help as the runs start to get a bit longer later in the programme. All the very best with it! C25K is a fantastic programme. Since doing it, I haven't looked back. I have videos that go right through every run of C25K and then more videos that go beyond that distance, up to 10K and then on to half marathon!! You can do it!!! Good luck! Andy
