- I've had a indifferent relationship with Black Clover ever since its debut years ago. I've given this series two chances before my recent attempt. I guess its really true when they say "Third Times the Charm". The series has really grown on me after making to chapter 237. Is this what they call character development? I want to explain how my opinion on the series has evolved.

I think a big part of what made BC stick with me was when asta fucked up his arm and he had to bear the burden of knowing he may never be able to use it again while still putting up a facade of his previous obnoxiously enthusiastic self. That shift in character tone and seeing how even the most optimistic and energetic people can be broken down really made me love black clover's character writing and story overall. And obv this is all made better with vanessa's arc of sacrificing herself to heal asta.
I really love how that entire seen was basically that life does get better no matter what fate throws at you
What I like the most about BC is how much importance the different characters have around the MC. It's not Asta+friends but rather it's all the crew, and you see that even though Asta wields the strongest power in his world, he's still underdeveloped and you feel the distance of strenght from someone like Yami whos insane and the wizard king whos basically a god
That scene proves that he is screaming to convince himself, not for attention

Tabat had another manga called Hungry Joker. It was really good and was unique. But it got canceled in less than 30 chapter in I think. That's why he went with the cliche route with BC.

I've always liked BC. The author respects/acknowledges kubo, so that's enough for me to appreciate BC.

people will see things with their bias sadly, they ignore what's actually there and judge it on their high horse made of assumptions, know it all mentality.
I remember a few years ago after I finished Tokyo ghoul re I was hurting to find something to fill the the gap I read a lot of manga and like all of them but nothing left the same mark that Tokyo ghoul did then one day I went to an anime club at the library and they were showing the black clover anime and I fell in love with the show .
Same, that line reeeeally get you hooked.

I know a lot of BC fans can come off as really dweeby and overly defensive. Honestly, it's something I feel that we as the BC community need to just get over. It comes from a place of really wanting to defend the series, especially against people who've blindly hated on it in the past. Just know that a lot of those fans are the loud minority, and the majority of fans are really chill.
All that being said, I'll 100% admit that BC is by no means a masterpiece or anything. The series definitely has it's shortcomings, and the first arc is really shaky. However, as time has gone by, I've come to appreciate those earlier chapters. Simply because you can really see Yuki Tabata sowing the seeds of a lot of the more interesting ideas he wanted to explore later on in the story.
Thanks for giving the series another chance man. Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on it!
I think the biggest part that changes people’s minds when watching the series is the underwater sea temple arc shits still crazy to rewatch I don’t think we get enough good team battles in shounens with choreography and teamwork as well as the fight against Vetto

Honestly it isn't trash. It's akin to having something like forgetting you left the mayo outside in the heat. It's still good but it doesn't mean the taste stayed the same. Still edible though.

I always liked this series because from the beginning I've felt like the author simply wanted to make a fun Shonen series and didn't hide it. There was something, I don't know, _honest_ about this? Like the author was clearly saying "this is what this series is. You love it? That's great! Don't like it? That's alright." It's hard for me to describe it...
Oh, and of course the art is freaking awesome!

@TheWhiteFang284 Definitely. It is agreed among all of the BC community that you should read the manga. The anime is optional except for maybe some episodes that are considered to be really good. Oh and the OPs, the OPs are great.

Yea I remember recomending it to people really early on as a just like a true classic shonen series that just nails the basics. Then specially when the anime came out all this hate was there for it and was like wtf???
I’ve been telling people this for awhile black clover is great but a lot of people don’t give it a chance not including Yuki Tabata knows how to write his characters! Now you need to read Jujitsu Kaisen shits fire!!
The anime sucks. People say the manga is better since the anime is quite rushed a lot of important character development tends to not really be there or emotional moments as reviewers have stated are actually quite bad. Due to all of this I will stick to things with more story like Re Zero.

I never watched it but when it started I saw pages from manga copy paste momemnts from Naruto and I was : Nah not gonna watch another cursed kid. And giving how people said it took 50 episodes and 100 or so chapters to become decent I find it a bit too long,although the first big development in Katekyou Reborn took 20-30 episodes so is not like it is the first series that took it`s time to get better.The only thing that is Black Clover that isconnected to me is the amazing music of the openings
@@QuinSkew Well over a masterpiece like ReZero, of course it’s gonna win. There are a lot of emotional moments in Black Clover anyways since it’s just mostly action and fights. If you are that type of guy, then Black Clover is perfect. Story wise, yeah ReZero wins hands down (especially the later arcs).
asta vs vetto was honestly where i realized that black clover had gotten pretty good. that fight was just awesome and not the kind of fight you get to see in the bad mangas where it's all about 'haha friendship/giant powerup.'
It was the same for me. It was when I saw all of the Black Bulls work together to bring down Vetto(someone even stronger than even Yami). We all expected Asta to get a new form and beat Vetto himself, but seeing Asta work together with all his squadmates and use strategy to defeat him completely shocked me(and most likely other fans). It was then when I finally said Black Clover is really good and that I should stick with it.
That honestly turned me off the series completely, I hated that fight

Yep, the Mangaka really knows how to implement a plot twist.
While I usually like Chibi's vids, this one felt like a backhanded compliment to Black Clover. And a lot of shounen manga nowadays are using cliches. Black clover had a lot of unique twists on cliches to the point where they can't really be called cliche's anymore. For instance, most of the big villain battles ended with a shit ton of teamwork instead of a instant power-up face-rolling over the antagonist. Even the cliche of "sudden new technique" barely ever works. Like when Noelle learned Sea Dragon's Roar. In a typical shounen, that would have been it. Nope. And there's plenty of unique incidents like that throughout the whole story so far. But Naruto, Bleach, Trash Tail, Boruto, Dragonball will preach about teamwork only for one of the important characters to faceroll solo a huge story arc antagonist.
It talks about unity and friendship and they ACTUALLY DO IT. They fight like a squad. I love that shit! People need to learn to stop using Black Clover and Cliches in the same sentence so much.
But even with that, I do appreciate you giving it some of the due that it deserves. So thank ya, Chibi. Keep the vids rollin, bro.

Well the anime is apparently the worst form to take in this kind of media so it makes sense considering that while the fights are well animated I still find the anime to be quite bad. A good episode that shows my distaste is the one that has asta meet a man and evverything that happens in the episode could have taken around two or three and so it is an issue of pacing that keeps me from enjoying it.

I mostly watch anime and I started reading manga more when I wanted to continue the story after an anime series season ends. A brand new manga you should check out is Eden's Zero.

This is why “initial reactions” & “weekly reactions” are a bad thing. You don’t get the full story, full context of what the writer wants to write, yet “anime youtubers” go off of a chapter or a current chapter & assume they know everything about it & make false assumptions that create negative discourse on the series bc of their fanbases.
PREACH! This comment deserves more likes. These are the words I always wanted to say but never knew how to say. I appreciate the work reactors do, but I would appreciate it far more if they understood the fact that the series is far from over, and that just because they can make a fun theory does not mean they have to stick by that theory even after the show deconfirms it. Failing to understand this only lowers the quality of a reaction.
Tabata needs more appreciation as an artist! There are some really well drawn series in Jump but honestly BC is easily the most consistently well drawn series (IMO). Always blown away with the art with every chapter.

@@layton6202 i look around on mangaplus alot and Black Clover and MHA are the only ones that genuinely impress me with the art, jjk’s is inconsistent, half the time just bad, DBS is monthly, and some of the art looks weekly, same with Boruto, Kaiju no 8’s is pretty good, Chainsaw Man’s art is average for me, One Piece’s art for me looked wayy better in its earlier art, i know AOT has good art but iirc it isnt jump, and its monthly anyway so its pretty expected to look good, but the obvious monthly best is OPM, seriously the artist is actually god with his art. And i did think the art was pretty cheeks with BC at the start, but chapters like the newer ones with the “personification of hellfire” is REALLY good. The only thing Tabata can’t seem to draw well is explosions. Art style is subjective anyway, i forgot to put IMO in my other comment

I'm not even going to lie. I started off watching the anime before I started reading the manga. I watched the 1st 30 episodes before dropping it. But kept reading the manga. Then picked the anime back up in the 60s. IDK, but it's the only series were I enjoy the manga more than the anime to the point I don't need to see it animated.

For real though it's great that you tell people how you feel on a specific manga or anime. I've always loved Black Clover from the beginning and even as you stated in the video that the start wasn't great, I agree with you 100% but I have always had a feeling that this manga/anime will become something that the people will like even if it didn't appear like that at the start. Yeah I really enjoyed us seeing Asta’s swordsman skills and us seeing Kiato, Fanzell, Mars, Licht and Yami and lots of other flashbacks, seriously that would be a good spot to play the first opening when it gets adapted to the anime
@@fellowpassenger_54-67 It goes to show that Asta was never entirely carried by the anti-magic and that training and hardwork is a legitimate relevant factor to his strength. Which is something I like, because one criticism people have of shōnen in general is that the protagonists tend to be carried by their OP abilities after they gain those abilities. And to be fair, that criticism is completely valid. But that is why I think this fight against Liebe is really good. Because it shows you that, no, Asta isn't carried. Yes, the antimagic DEFINITELY helps, but now we understand it should be considered more an RPG-style buff than as the carrier of his strength.
@@angelmendez-rivera351 True and Anti Magic is only as good as your physical stats if you don’t have mana like Asta so if you never trained a day in your life but you got anti magic swords out of nowhere, then you’d die instantly and wouldn’t be able to even use them properly whereas since Asta has always worked really hard on his physical stats, he EARNED the anti magic swords and if anti magic really did carry Asta then they wouldn’t make it a point that the anti magic swords are really heavy for most mages which is shown by Julius stuggling to carry the Dweller sword so Asta is only able to use his anti magic well because of his physical strength that he worked for
I remember reading years ago that the reason Black Clover’s beginning was so generic was because Tabata had attempted to write a Shonen before in his own style, but it failed; so Kubo, who’s his friend, basically showed him the surefire success path for how to get a series licensed as a super generic Shonen that way it could at least get started and he could start switching out of the writing style he wasn’t comfortable with, into his more natural style.
Then the anime happened, and was done by the same studio doing Boruto, at the same time as Boruto; except Pierrot put all the assets into Boruto, and Black Clover got a small, kind of underpaid team of animators, and also had to get some novice voice actors (such as Asta’s). Luckily Black Clover’s Animators were huge fans of the Manga themselves; but the show had such horrible backing that it was heavily carried on the quality of Tabata’s writing after the start of Black Clover, as well as the Animator’s overworking themselves at critical times. It wasn’t until Pierrot noticed that Black Clover was consistently outperforming Boruto that they thought; “Hey, our Golden Goose is getting outdone by this trash fire, what in the actual f*ck is happening?” And then, 120+ episodes in; the animation’s finally starting to get better.
Although again; this is just tidbits of information I’ve gotten over the years regarding why Black Clover’s quality is pretty messy, there could easily be some inaccuracies, so take it all with like; a grain of salt, or even a gallon if you wanna be safe.
I don't have any evidence but I wouldn't be surprised if this is all true. Still BC is recently getting rumors of being cancelled why Boruto seems like is going to be fine so F you Pierrot, F you.

Although Black Clover has it's faults, I personally think it does a lot of things really well which should be appreciated, here's the main things I'd say BC does really well:
1. A main cast that grows on you- when I was first introduced to the main cast, I couldn't stand most of them. Noelle was a typical tsundere/himedere, Gordon was a creep, Gauche was a paedo creep, Magna looked lame, Luck was a psycho, etc. But the characters really grow on you once you get their backstories and Tabata writes some great character interactions. The Black Bulls is what the Fairy Tail guild should have been imo.
2. Awesome fights- Most of the fights in BC are S tier and have amazing strategy/teamwork to them, reminiscent of some of Naruto's best fights.
3. Well-written and useful females- Noelle is arguably the queen of shounen cuz of her physical and mental growth, she becomes more useful as a fighter and a more likeable character. Not to mention the various other awesome/badass girls like Mereoleona, Charlotte, Mimosa, Vanessa, Charmy, Sol, Dorothy, etc.
4. No mangaka juggles characters as well as Tabata- 90% of characters in the manga get their time to shine in fights and other moments, including side characters, something I wish MHA was better at.
5. An awesome power system- the power system of BC is underrated. Nux does a great video on it. It's a lot more complicated that you'd expect. Especially with advanced techniques like mana zone and mana method. It's this power system which allows for Black Clover to be one of the few series that's actually able to pull off the "power of friendship."
@Mako Cat I really agree with the BBs having the reject vibes, I think BC does this whole thing better than Fairy Tail honestly. The Fairy Tail guild were originally portrayed as troublemakers/rejects but all of ths members seemed likeable to me so I never got that vibe, whereas the BBs aren't likeable at first but really grow on you imo.
Agree with the teamwork, not every character is a head-on fighter so the author shows how useful support characters are in a fight.
The only character that I think Black Clover should really show more of is Magna. He just isn't shown to develop too much as far as power goes. But I like how in depth you went and the dedication it took to write all of that.

Nearly every anime takes inspiration from something, so cliche is not bad if executed well and includes enough variety to make it different. At first I was annoyed by Asta screaming all the time, but that quickly ended when he started his journey to becoming a magic knight. And the series just keeps getting better.
The screaming and "cliche" excuse is what makes me pissed. They never even get to know the anime.

I have been waiting so long for you to cover this masterpiece!!! It’s my favorite series rn and #2 on my list. Hella homages, everything is tied together. Very few of any asspulls. And I think the power system is very complex but reasonable and can expanded in so many different directions it’s crazy. Ugh please more BC content!!!

@@fartgod6327 Fairy Tale started with a very strong showing, but as the series went on, it became full of fan service, huge plot armor which didn't make sense and stupid powerups for main characters via the power of friendship every single time, one will lose track of how many times they facepalmed in the chapter. People hate it because it had great potential unfortunately the author's abysmal story telling quality dragged it down to such a low level that people never want anything to do with that series. Save ur time read another manga series, fairy tail is not worth anyones time ( Don't let the beginning arcs fool you ).
I see Black Clover as a celebration of the common tropes, and at other times cracks it too 11 in a sort of fun and campy way

In the beginning

Black dropped after 1st episode and picked it up after it had 90 or episodes

(few arcs after end s4) my hero academia it went from hype to wtf is going to boring now waiting for chapters to accumulate
Black clover gets more interesting by every chapter
Every chapter of black clover is predictable and they tend to leave interesting characters to the side after only giving them a moment or two

I enjoyed the elf arc in black clover more than anything MHA related till season 4. The whole concept of MHA is getting so boring, i’m tired of the constant tournament and training arcs with irrelevant villains popping up here and there in between and end up being a huge disappointment *cough* Overhaul *cough*
I first began reading Black Clover about a year ago. I never really disliked it in the first place but yeah, the first chapter was pretty cliche I'll admit. It wasn't until about 30-40 chapters when I started to get invested in the story. I honestly really enjoy the character development and world building of this series. I'm probably going to follow for a long time, just to see where it goes from here. I'm curious to see where Tabata is taking the series from here. Anyways, good on you for accepting this series! Looking forward to future reviews.

Also the black bulls is the "guild" of the people with problems and see them overcome their problems with their respect of each other an the trust they hold for each other just makes it more realistic than all power of friendship its more like when someone who has been crushed again and again by others gets its confidence back and start shining again
I love it when the black bulls use actual teamwork to beat a stronger opponent (ex. Asta, Vanessa, and Finral vs Vetto)

Looking back on the beginning of the series, seeing how far Asta has come, and remembering what he once was, it makes me realize something. Asta's intital bratty and loud demeanour, constantly pronouncing how he strived to be the Wizard King, was probably more to convince himself that he could actually do it and drown out the voice inside his own head telling him he couldn't, than it was to convince others.

I know the anime is not the most liked especially the beginning with Asta's voice and such, but it's been a great ride and I'm enjoying every bit of it. Too bad the games wasn't that great

You're right, the cancellation thing was a fanmade assumption that many still assume as true. In interviews post manga ending Kubo did confirm he was allowed to continued and finish the story as he wanted despite being ill. But either because a lot people are not aware of this interview or because they don't want to accept the ending as what it is, many still claim it was cancelled even though there is nothing official supporting that. And since many still claim that, the false notion of it getting cancelled still spreads to this day. Not to mention people get confused because the anime DID get cancelled earlier
I love how asta pushes everyone to surpass their limits and go plus Ultra and beyond, and not only because the power og friendship or his inner Demon, it's his attitude that makes all posible

I don’t understand the "Black Clover went from shit to good" narrative. Black Clover was okay to begin with. It evolved from readable/ watchable to AMAZING. That’s how I see it. And no I’m not a newbie, I’m a veteran in the anime/ manga scene and have watched +200 anime in different genres. Black Clover is filling the void left in my heart after Bleach and Naruto ended. Not even MHA or demon slayer were able to do that.
Literally same. But I've come to accept some issues others had with BC, and I'm just glad more and more people are able to go beyond them and get to the point they appreciate it just as much.
demon slayer is the most overrated manga i have seen...i dont know how it sold more than one piece this year.

Eh, the first few arcs or so are pretty boring. It starts getting more interesting when you get deeper into light's background story. It's the type of show where you can enjoy it but, can do without it just fine. I think it appeals more to newer weebs rather than older weebs. I'd give it a 7.952/10
You should check out the anime too animation and voice acting really improved a lot.

But Thats not how the power system works in black clover. the way it works and why Noelle power ups amazing, is that New spells in black clover are unlocked by CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. As the user grows, so dose their magic. The reason her power ups are well deserved, is because she constently evolves as a character durring thos power ups.
Examples
Sea dragons lair: Obtained by She learned that she cant run away and gained the drive to protect people
Sea dragons cratal: Obtained by Learning to let her magic run wild and thanking the black bulls for being a family
Sea dragons Roar:Obtained by Given the will to fight and make her foes pay
Valkyrie Dress: Obtained by He learning to love the siblings who tortured her for so long and wanting to protect them
All the ability she gained are justified by her growing as a person.
1: Her never ending drive to protect people
2: Her kind personality
3: Her royal-ish personality
4:Her relationships with other people
5:Her relationship with asta
#5 is my favorite because (Unlike some tsunderes like sakura ) Her tsundere habits towards asta isn't the only connection the two have. They both have the same drive to help. She inspires him, she inspires her. Her royal-ish personality contrast with astas fun and loud personalty nicely. And when she is acting like a tsundere, its usaly out of nervousness rather then hatred, and that makes it so adorable!
I can see were your coming from. I also like rukia, dispite not being that big of a fan of bleach. And she dose have some equally awesome moments. But Noelle's Personality, Character development, And USEFULNESS Beyond belief makes her A amazingly written female character in my book. I try to look at every character in anime like im writing a easy on them. And when you take a deeper dive into characters, you start to see so much more than you at first thought you saw.
Im not saying you haft to like Noelle, you can still hate her if you want, But i hope i was able to give you some context to Her.

Like asta and rock lee may have similar stories, But they both stand out as awesome characters.
Rukia and Noelle's Development may be similar, But both of them are awesome characters.
Rukia's role in the story is to be a kick butt (No. Im not swearing) side character. Shes fun, and confident, and just as strong as ichigo.
Noelle's role is to act sort of like a secondary protagonist. And grow as much if not more than asta.
And even if he is a copy of rukia, it dosnt make her a bad character.
I can agree that rukia is somewhat better than noelle, but to me, they both earned their place in the hall as useful, awesome female characters.
But like i said, You dont haft to like her

Episode 54 changes everything
I agree that Black Clover did start out a bit cliché, but it is a REALLY good series. It's currently one of my favorite series and I think I actually like it better then My Hero. And this from a guy who ABSOLUTELY loves My Hero, and is eager for the anime to return next year.

I just wanna say it, i enjoy black clover more than mha. Black clover knows it's strength and focuses on it. While mha feels like it is trying to be greater than what it is. Not to mention, characters feel better in black clover. Specifically main character. Again, it is just my opinion
And the females of BC are great man. Noelle imo has one of the greatest character developments in the modern shonen, mangakas dont usually give that level of focus and development to a female character. She literally grows in every arc, and now she is a badass. BC is really good.
