Chordplay - The Chords Of Stryper
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Stryper. I've had a number of requests to feature some of Stryper's music, but aside from that - this video also marks my six hundred and sixty-sixth video (666 = jinkies). So with the hope of offsetting any demonic forces at play during this lesson, I decided to finally feature Stryper - so let's dive in!
This episode revolves around an assortment of music from Stryper's first three albums, and for anyone who's heard them, you know that these guys hit the scene with plenty of savage riffs, melodic tag-team shredding, and wicked guitar antics all over the place. From extended soloing, harmonized parts, dropped tunings, pinch harmonics, roaring power chords, and much more - early Stryper music definitely had a little hellfire hiding in it.
The music and chord-based examples in this lesson include tracks such as Free, Calling On You, More Than A Man, Loud N Clear, Rockin' The World, and Soldiers Under Command (to name a few). There are plenty of power chord-based riffs hiding in this episode, but there are also a couple of wicked harmonized guitar parts/songs too - so needless to say, you already have your work cut out for you with this one.
If you're a Stryper fan, a fan of 1980s hard rock music, or a player searching for some new rhythm guitar and chord-based ideas to stick into their bag of tricks - this episode is totally for you! Good seeing Stryper getting some love!
Solid!!! Stryper is the real deal! 🤘🎸🇺🇸
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE UNCLE~MR.OZ FOX!!!!!!!!
they are so underrated ,thanks for showing us some lof there riffs
Stryper was a really good band. Sweet & Fox are incredible…thanks for another great video.
A great twin axe attack from my youth, The harmony parts were what really made them something special, IMO
stryper where underrated for sure
Loudness were at the same time. They were amazing as well.
A lesson straight to my heart, I've been on a Stryper kick at work with one of my buddies from childhood.
Great guitar work from Michael Sweet and Ozbert Fox
Nice! Stryper guitar parts were always so awesome.
I met Stryper, Loudness and TNT all at the same show. Great day of guitar playing! May the 777 counter the 666th video!
Stryper is so overlooked. Michael and Oz are BOTH incredible guitarists! Thanks for doing this video!!
I’ve probably listened to Stryper more than anyone. I don’t think there is a band that has put out the quality of music they have late in their career. These guys are so good.
I need to check out their newer material!
Thank you for giving us a look into Stryper !!! I loved them when I was a teen !!! Although a lot of my "metal" friends thought that they were not the coolest but once they listened to their music they changed their mind !!! Also ... Your giving us Stryper on your 666th episode is absolutely priceless and totally unexpected !!! WTG Dave !!!
There last 4 albums are unbelievable!
@@kinglangren I'll have to check those albums out! Thanks!
Against my protests, a friend took me to see them in the mid 80's.
They tossed out tiny paper bibles into the audience instead of picks. lols
Edit: Congratulation on remission Oz!🥰
I know they have been labeled a Christion band .. but I really liked them... Thanks Dave .. you give the best content on utube.
Christians can rock!
@@patrickian8843 I enjoy Jerusalem from Sweden, too! Phil Keaggy is brilliant! "Judas Kiss" by Petra has an amazing guitar hook! Definitely!
Killer video David, Stryper is one of my favorite band, and I’ve meet the guys too.
Thank you for making this video. Your Awesome
Oh dude thanks / my jam
Love their structure building of songs and leads.
🐝🐝🐝🎸🎸🎸 Oh yeah, it’s the yellow and black attack! Great lesson David!
Great video! Been fan since the Yellow and Black Attack. Thanks for this Chordplay, Love it!
Stryper=Metal Repentance 🎸🌩️⚡ 🌀🫀
A fan from Florida, David
Thanks for giving the band some love. Judas Priest was another big influence on Micheal. As well as the incredible guitar work, the four part harmonies made them stand out.
Great band overall. I was fortunate to see and meet the original band a few times, Most recently in 2012 as one of my old friends was working for them.
Oz is an immensely talented and down to earth, Seriously humble and nice dude. Tim and Robert are sweethearts as well and great players. Michael, Good front man, Singer and writer. Unfortunately I can't say much good beyond that for him.
This isn't the place to bash on people so I won't.
They were always a great sounding unit live.
Perry from Firehouse is their bassist now I believe of the last few years.
I saw Stryper with Loudness and TNT back in 87'...What a great guitar night that was!!! Thanks for doing this segment and keep up the great work!
Whoah! 3 great bands!
Same. I saw them at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden. My brother caught a bible :)
@@voronOsphere I totally agree. All 3 bands played an amazing show!
@@PatrickAustin Awesome! I saw them in Florida at the Lakeland Civic Center. I didn't catch a Bible, but I did catch a guitar pick from Ronnie LeTekro!
@@kevinkappelman6227 Ronnie rules!
I may be the only person who thought this, but I personally the the dual guitars into to 'Soldiers under Command' was the Greatest Metal intro of ALL Metal intros. And I got to hear it when it came out in the 80s. Such a scorching intro!
Their newer albums aren’t quite the glam metal albums that I love the most, but they are crushingly technical and sound so great still. Sweet’s guitar tone is super unique too.
Gonna kick myself if they stop touring before I get to see them.
Also funny you should mention George Lynch - he and Michael sweet have released some music together over the years which is an embarrassment of technical prowess.
Wild to think that a ton of the lead parts are played by Sweet while singing.
Their post 2000s albums are so slept on. Straight ahead heavy/power metal.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOUR VIDEO'S...
YOUR PLAYING AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE..
Stryper was my first show. Saw them in Chicago at the Bismarck Theater in 1985 (I think). We played covers of a couple of their songs ( I played guitar and sang, I had a high voice back then). They were great. Armored Saint opened and we're pretty good but man Stryper killed. My best friend John got a Bible they threw out. I remember they had stacks of marshalls but I got to the front of the stage and Oz was actually using a small Peavey combo miked up! All that sound from just a little Peavey. Lol. Edit: thanks for bringing them up. So far Razorfist, Ben Eller, and you have given them some love.
Great lesson. Let's get one on Glenn Kaiser or Resurrection Band next!
Great lesson thank you. I forgot about this band and their harmonies. Great stuff🤘🏻🤘🏻
I remember when they were on tour with hurricane in the 80s and got autographs at Coconut's music
I remember listening to this for the first time with our buddy Jeremy Richardson. Good memories
Those are good memories.
Honestly, I think I always liked Whitecross better.
They sounded liked RATT.
And speaking of 'Honestly' we played that together with the choir above the pool for homecoming WAY back in the day. That was my first "public gig" and I was terrified.
: )
fantastic Brewha! ❤
I love it when he completely nails it and then says something like that. Great player
Love me some Stryper! Their first three albums are legendary! I love their album of cover songs as well. They can play their asses off! And Michael's voice is out of this world!
I'll have to check out Stryper again. I've been into heavy metal since I was a little kid, and about the time I got turned onto Stryper I had really gotten into a lot heavier stuff, so I didn't give it as much of a listen as I probably should have. I listen(ed) to everything pretty much, but there are some really heavy Christian bands out there for people who are religious and love the heavy stuff. Bands like Deliverance, Mortification, Vengeance Rising, Tourniquet, are all really great heavy Christian bands even if you're not into the religious part of it. I'll have to go back and hear some Stryper again. Thanks for the lesson, as always, Dave!
Thanks for the heads up on those Death Metal Bands! I'll check 'em out!
@@voronOsphere No problem! Try Deliverance - Deliverance (Weapons of our Warfare is good too), Mortification - Mortification, Vengeance Rising - Once Dead, and Tourniquet's Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance.
@@elguapo9628 Thanks, again!
Great job, one of my favorite bands, right up there with Boston (which MS was also a member of for a while)!
Great musicians and they are STILL cranking out some killer tunes !!!
Great Lesson. Check out their new material....they may be one of the long term creative kings of the genre and still putting out amazing music that i dare say is even BETTER than back in the day!!!
I really love their harmonizing guitar and harmonizing vocals. Sounds like it came from heaven. God rocks 🤘😎
Great lesson, was a huge Stryper fan back in the day. Their guitar tone has always been one of my favorite metal guitar sounds. Keep up the great work, love the channel!
What a rip snorter that was. Don't know much about this band but there is some killer riffage in this episode. Great stuff 😃👍
Excellent choice ! Long time Stryper fan so thanks for this video.
A guy I worked with was a huge Stryper fan I was big into Ghost first 3 albums we would go back and forth on good vs evil good times 👍🤘
Another excellent Chordplay! Great musicians! Thanks, David!
Dude that was awesome remember those guys all over MTV heavy riffs for the lyrics that accompanied them they always had a huge tone that I loved👊👍😎😈
What an awesome lesson!
Thank you! 🤘🏻
Wow! Thanks for casting a wide net, David - these guys had fallen off my radar screen!
Yes!!!
Awesome episode!
feedback and comments, rock on dave
Thanks Dave! This is great stuff!
This is an awesome breakdown of some truly amazing tunes. I love Stryper's music... Thank you, David!
Thank you for your time and lessons David! On the side note do you offer privet lessons by any chance? At one point I remember you recommended a book on guitar I just forgot its title; would you be so kind and post it again? Thanks again!
I love Stryper, thanks David!
Yeah I love stryper got it on vinyl and on, cassette
Thanks bro I appreciate you playing soldiers under command the main riff is sweet
thanks for this one dave!
Dave, you ever get forgetful about things you learn, dude? Makes me frustrated as hell! Don’t even want to play anymore, bro.
Good vid as usual, Dave.
Serge in Chicago.
I can remember chords and scales, but I have trouble remembering how to play songs that I learn.
Dave,by far one of the most melodic, loud and best rock shows I’ve ever worked on!!! The guys are as genuine as you could possibly be!!
Mike,Rob,Oz and Tim treated us all like family!!
Great video, amazing tone there...
Thanks for the video. Great stuff mate!
Phenomenal!! Yer the best David!!!
David shared this one far and wide not a lot of people break down Stryper
Great vid!! They had some wicked riffs for sure.
They had me from the first few seconds of You Know What to Do.
I love the first 3 albums the most: YABA, Soldiers, and THWTD! I can tell you are a good guitarist but you didn't quite play the way they were on the albums, BUT it's a good starting place for those wanting to learn the music of Stryper. Well done, I enjoyed the video!
"The Rock That Makes Me Roll", is the tune!
Excellent, dude. How about a Fear Factory chordplay ?!?! That might sound technical, but there are some accessible stuff in their catalogue like "Descent" or "Replica" for instance which would fit well into your series. And excellent right hand workout as well !
Well played David. Well played.
more than a man is a killer riff 1st time hearing it kudos man
Wowwwwww.......I love it bro
Michael Sweet has some serious pipes as well, which helped them gain popularity.
Great! How about more Stryper?
Great lesson! Could we potentially see a Heathen Chordplay for metal month next month? They're a super underrated thrash band and guitarists Lee Altus, Kragen Lum, and Doug Piercy have written some killer tunes!
Soldiers Under Command and To Hell With the devil are both great albums!
Aww thank you! Now show us some Petra❤
It takes guts to do Christian metal. While too lazy to pull out my vinyl and verify, I think the early records that were so heavy sounding were produced by Michael Wagener. It doesn't hurt to have such a guy in your camp if you want to come off crunchy. Btw, I'm new to your channel, friend, but I wanted to say that you have a laid back style I like, and a good handle on what you do. Regards.
Definitely good guitar work, but I never really connected them with Christian rock till I found out later. It was just all about the guitar work
Stryper came out of the LA metal scene but brought more European influences.
I'm not sure Stryper has ever made a bad album? Seriously
Oh man I have been waiting for you to do Stryper.....AWESOME as always Dave!!!
Awesome lesson. What about the chords lay of dangerous toys?
Original Watchtower vocalist Jason McMaster's other band! Yes!
these riffs are like van halen on dope
More then a man
I just figured it would be all Iron Maiden's chords just like Iced Earth
I brass saddles and a seymour duncan on that guitar. I like it. Is that a JB ?
I keep putting black and blues in my chest from the Les Paul body guitar. Maybe my posture is bad… wondering if anyone else has that issue.
Be well guys.
You could Check yourself in the mirror for upright alignment. Don't be harsh. Just take note and make small visual adjustments. Hopefully some keen observations and small adjustments will help. My body is all busted up too. So I feel ya. Or switch to something with a more pleasing contour?
@@patrickkish6662 yeah yeah, dude! That’s for the advice, P. …Need like a couch cushion in between! lol! But yeah, I always find myself doubled over and don’t notice how hard the edge is pressing into my chest. I’m not one of those guys complaining about my fingers hurting(you know the kind) but this is annoying! Lol
All my best, man.
@@sergedenovo2389 Guess what? I'm a fingers hurt guy. But it's all good. A few good notes squeezed out just right keeps me going from day to day. That's all I ask. Good luck! 👍🏼🙂
@@patrickkish6662 I’m talking about the young kids that whine about not wanting to play because
‘Iit huurts my fiiingers”.
I don’t think you are that guy, bro. You don’t sound like a whiner.
Again, thanks for the advice. I’m going to try it.
Be well, dude.
Would you do a Chordplay on Whitecross?
thirst !
,🍪
Christian metal. A genre oxymoron if there was ever one. Rebellious, but not too rebellious I guess.
The big hair MTV thing from the USA did not really take hold here in NZ when I was a Gen X'er teen. We saw all the make up, perms, lace and pantihose, posing, bottom wiggling, i.e., proto-twerking by squealing blokes, and thought "WTF is that sh!t all about?". We went directly from AC/DC and Iron Maiden to Metallica and Megadeth etc. Then sometimes Soundgarden etc (lots got into techno and rave stuff too, especially the formerly metal females if they were still out in the wild).
The hair bands had some very cool guitar riffs though, e.g., Dokken etc. If only CD players had a button to mute the vocals, cut out the cheesy choruses, and then loop the good riffs and solos hehe.
I don't care if music is rebellious or not.
I remeber a lot of guys becomeing closet fans after they found out they are christian it was so funny
Great breakdown of the tunes!!
