Wow. Just finding out. Man, Gil Scott-Heron was a whole institution, musically. His live performances were incredible. I am so glad to have seen him perform in person.

" I saw him go to pieces" was my theme in life for too long. My life was in pieces because of bad habits. I use to say that I was in fractions; fractions of a man long before I heard this compelling, enlightening song of life. When I stop my destructive lifestyle and not only felt but experience my life coming together, finding inner peace, that's when I discovered by mistake mind you- "Pieces of a Man" by Gil Scott-Heron and thought this song is about my life and how God has given me a chance to put all the pieces together. Yes this song brings tears of joy and sadness, not only about my life but the many people who because of certain situations saw their life break into Pieces. But it's never too late to put your Pieces of a Man (or Woman) back together again and never forget the words, music of this beautifully constructed song by the late, great Gil Scott-Heron.
I love this so much. Thanks for sharing. But don't you think you gave yourself that chance cuz you found worth in yourself and reasons to put those pieces back into a whole man again?

His most emotionally touching song about life's Hardships during the 1970's. Times have changed but Hardships hurt just the same. Gill Scott Heron told the truth.
Gil didn't have the great material success of other musical artists of the late 20th century because the feds had it out for him. His political lyricism couldn't be co-opted and posed a real threat. @@BurstVesselsI can see where a song like “Whitey On The Moon” would threaten the political establishment and make him a target. I’m white but I can understand the truth in every word of the song. Verse 1: Gil Scott-Heron]
Jagged jigsaw pieces
Tossed about the room
I saw my grandma sweeping
With her old straw broom
But she didn't know what she was doing
She could hardly understand
That she was really sweeping up
Pieces of a man
[Verse 2: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw my daddy meet the mailman
And I heard the mailman say
"Now don't you take this letter to heart now, Jimmy
Cause they've laid off nine others today"
But he didn't know what he was saying
He could hardly understand
That he was only talking to
Pieces of a man
[Verse 3: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw the thunder and heard the lightning
And felt the burden of his shame
And for some unknown reason
He never turned my way
[Verse 4: Gil Scott-Heron]
Pieces of that letter
Were tossed about that room
And now I hear the sound of sirens
Come knifing through the gloom
But they don't know what they are doing
They could hardly understand
That they're only arresting
Pieces of a man
[Verse 5: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces
He was always such a good man
He was always such a strong, strong man
Yeah, I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces
