And even people who aren't I mean I didn't always listen to him but before I ever heard a song from him I knew his name from just hearing people mention him over the years and stuff like that. " I saw him go to pieces" was my theme in life for too long. My life was in pieces because of bad habits. I use to say that I was in fractions; fractions of a man long before I heard this compelling, enlightening song of life. When I stop my destructive lifestyle and not only felt but experience my life coming together, finding inner peace, that's when I discovered by mistake mind you- "Pieces of a Man" by Gil Scott-Heron and thought this song is about my life and how God has given me a chance to put all the pieces together. Yes this song brings tears of joy and sadness, not only about my life but the many people who because of certain situations saw their life break into Pieces. But it's never too late to put your Pieces of a Man (or Woman) back together again and never forget the words, music of this beautifully constructed song by the late, great Gil Scott-Heron.

Gil didn't have the great material success of other musical artists of the late 20th century because the feds had it out for him. His political lyricism couldn't be co-opted and posed a real threat. This idea that he was "troubled" comes from the media coverage of his run ins with the law. It appeals to liberal racists, but it also functions as a threat, "see what happens to even the most talented if they insist on politicizing everything." When, for instance, DemocracyNow says "He was so brave" it means "He was so foolish to think of challenging the power and all-seeing might of the empire."

    • @MrPeterpc2

@@BurstVesselsI can see where a song like “Whitey On The Moon” would threaten the political establishment and make him a target. I’m white but I can understand the truth in every word of the song. Gil was troubled because he saw how the corrupt racist system was never going to treat black people as equal to the elitist establishment. No matter how much he wrote about it, nothing was going to change. Are black people really better off now than 50 years ago? How much bigger a piece of the pie have they gotten? From one slice to three?

I agree with most everyone here in the comment, and as I was wiping my eyes wondering why allergies struck me now my eyes answered "because the song is a song of the soul caught in a slow burn", and I will never miss this great American poet. Gil Scott Heron will always stand as on of our greatest gifts to the world of poems sung so true, and what is true never gets old. But, I do miss every part of this man.

    Verse 1: Gil Scott-Heron]
    Jagged jigsaw pieces
    Tossed about the room
    I saw my grandma sweeping
    With her old straw broom
But she didn't know what she was doing
    She could hardly understand
That she was really sweeping up
    Pieces of a man
    [Verse 2: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw my daddy meet the mailman
And I heard the mailman say
"Now don't you take this letter to heart now, Jimmy
Cause they've laid off nine others today"
But he didn't know what he was saying
    He could hardly understand
That he was only talking to
    Pieces of a man
    [Verse 3: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw the thunder and heard the lightning
And felt the burden of his shame
    And for some unknown reason
    He never turned my way
    [Verse 4: Gil Scott-Heron]
    Pieces of that letter
    Were tossed about that room
And now I hear the sound of sirens
    Come knifing through the gloom
But they don't know what they are doing
    They could hardly understand
    That they're only arresting
    Pieces of a man
    [Verse 5: Gil Scott-Heron]
I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces
He was always such a good man
He was always such a strong, strong man
Yeah, I saw him go to pieces
I saw him go to pieces
