He was my main man, and my favorite band. The Midnight Band. Musician,Poet,Storyteller, Bluesman! RIP! I miss you everyday!

Billie Holiday (Lady Day) and John Coltrane were known to be habitual users of heroin and other opiates. Gil-Scott Heron cleverly uses only their names as an allegory for using the drug as a means of escapism. “Wash your troubles away” is an excellent description of how heroin, and other opiates, affect your mind.
I feel this songs thematic counterpart is home is where the hatred is. Whereas home tries to build sympathy for the junky, talking about the pain and loneliness in first person, lady day is all second person and talking about the relief of drugs from the pain of being a human and being an addict
Coltrane broke his addictions early in his career before he reached his full stardom. Billy Holliday did struggle her whole life unfortunately. Your idea is a good one, just wanted to point out that detail about Coltrane. Coltrane went cold turkey for the final 10 years of his life, his best recording years (Giant steps, love supreme, Kind Of Blue ... many more in these final 10 years of life). God bless these musicians and what they’ve given us

I was already aware of him because of his participation in Last Poets oeuvre in the late ‘60s - early ‘70s. I’m not even sure our R&B stations in Texas played Gil’s record. Can’t recall. However, I remember driving him one night to KPFT, the Pacifica radio station in Houston. My ride was a totally restored 1953 Chevy. Seems I may have been sporting a homburg at the time. He wasn’t sure what to make of me - a white kid in an old car and an old man’s hat. But he was cool as cool could be and had his way of letting me know he dug me finding a mic and some airtime for him. He was very easy to like. Gosh- here in New York I grew up listening to Gil and other jazz and fusion greats on the old WRVR- after 40 years I still miss that station and still remember the shock of when it changed format (to Country, not to knock County but we already had a decent Country station here)- New York, a capitol of jazz, was left without its own station). 88BGO later picked up some of the slack but it wasn't the same...

Recordarte para mi cumpleaños ha sido una grata sorpresa.. Gracias, Maestro..
I first heard this song 20yrs ago but never new who sang it despite my best efforts. I just happened to hear it today in a bbq spot thank God for Shazam, my search is finally over😂😂
His revolution will never end. Such unbelievable talent - so missed. I turned so many fiends on to him. Hope they are still following.
Wow! Thank you Ace Records Ltd for sharing these gems!
Wow! G.S.H. Heard this cut as a kid with my Dad. Thanks Pops.
The song is so dope, man. I can definitely relate to this one.
Thank you my Mac, this is a perfect song in my life right now! ♥️
Ever feel kinda down and out?
You just don't know what to do?
I love this man . Gil Scott Heron 🤍
RIP my brother ! I love you 👍
A special artist that never got his just due
Anyone remember those old tv advertisements for Tango, the soft drink? They would always feature someone getting splattered with the orange stuff. As the advert was ending, a voice would say, "You've been Tango-ed".Well, it was Gil Scott-Heron who supplied that voice.
not very revolutionary
shit sucks, but blame capital.
Bullshit.
@@truefunksoul8638 Double bullshit bro. Nobody understands. You had to be there. The dream crushed after MLK was gunned down. Black and white. Left and right. Rich and poor.
No, tango
I had the amazing fortune to play on a gig at SOB's where he headlined! Boy was I on a high. It has been a gradual education learning of Gil's body of work listening to his hits. I was shocked and aghast at his sudden departure from the scene as I am friends with one of his strong old friends. I constantly meditate on "the revolution" and what is or is not televised! Soul blues is special for sure.
I feel very sorry for the 121 people who clicked thumbs down on this masterpiece. Wtf???
They know not what they do. He was awesome, original and a voice that is missed today.
@@paulhensel1380 120 were KKK members. The last one was the ghost of J. Edgar Hoover.
Forgive then father for they do not know what they do
Remember late great fearlessness leadership respect yourself actively involved truth real word thank you very much for every thing Mr gil Scott heron rest in peace love him always.
Timeless. Excellent tune.
Best tune ever..!!!
fabulous and the most beautiful man ever x
Had no idea who he was till last week where I went "hang on, I've never heard this Hendrix song before" SHAZAM! - wasn't Hendrix. It was this bloke! 😮
When I heard no guitar, I realised "it's not Jimi, ya dummy!" 🤣
Truly beautiful.
26 year old South African. Love this man. Beautiful dissonance about his music. Every song has a sadness and a funk to counterbalance itself. Lol this might be funny but it's like Lana Del Rey is the modern version of him.
Simply amazing…. So missed , so needed… still & always.
i was lucky enoigh to see gill on his last tour in britian, magical,
Beautiful.
Another madly talented cat laid low by Cocaine... Saw Gil live many times in the 80's in London and he always raised the roof. Glad he's resting in heavenly peace. The brother was almost too beautiful for this wicked world. His music timeless and its message still relevant to this very day.
This song is so underestimated...if you know you know ✌️❤️💕✊🏻
"Lady Day And John Coltrane"
Ever feel kinda down and out, you don't know just what to do--
Livin' all of your days in darkness let the sun shine through--
Ever feel that somehow, somewhere, you've lost your way--
And if you don't get help quick you won't make it through the day--
Could you call on Lady Day,
Could you call on John Coltrane
Now ‘cause they'll
They'll wash your troubles
Your troubles your troubles
Your troubles away!
Plastic people with plastic minds are on their way to plastic homes--
No beginning there ain't no ending just on and on and on and on and on, it's
All because they're so afraid to say that they're alone--
Until our hero rides in, rides in on his saxophone.
Could you call on Lady Day,
Could you call on John Coltrane
Now ‘cause they'll,
They'll wash your troubles,
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away!
Now ‘cause they'll,
They'll wash your troubles,
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away!
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles away...
Your troubles, your troubles
Your troubles...
All right, dear Mr. Gil Scott-Heron!
"Could you call on Laurenceee T, could you call on John Coltrane..." I know I changed the lyrics but Laurence Taylor is a personal hero of mine. Comes in like a hero on his trumpet. Beautiful.
Still listening in 2024. His message is just as prolific as it was when I first heard in in 1972😮
Gosh- here in New York I grew up listening to Gil and other jazz and fusion greats on the old WRVR- after 40 years I still miss that station and still remember the shock of when it changed format (to Country, not to knock County but we already had a decent Country station here)- New York, a capitol of jazz, was left without its own station). 88BGO later picked up some of the slack but it wasn't the same...
Probably 1 of the best songs ever Written,,Xxx
maestro,,, with a common magical touch...
A truly wonderful piece of music !
