- We bought our 5th jeep, and our 3rd current jeep! This is the video you have all been waiting for. This is a run-down, 2003 Jeep TJ Se with over 180k miles. This jeep has something we have never experienced before, the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine.
The purpose of this build is to show everyone its very possible to buy a below average condition, cheap jeep wrangler and build it up to be a reliable vehicle both on and off the road. Neither of us are mechanics, we are both working professionals who enjoy modifying jeeps in our spare time. Be sure to subscribe to our channel and follow along as we build this awesome Jeep TJ.

Like the new addition. And wanted to share this with the garage couple concerning the "every day user Jeep built".
I thought about a 3" lift w/ 33's but fortunately very early on getting into off roading Jeeps, many told me, their TJ became very sluggish going from just 32's to 33's in addition to a domino effect of needing additional expensive parts. And I'm glad I listened! Because I drove a TJ with this set up and it didn't have that low end torque and was very slow off the line. And most of them returned to 32's while some fell for the aftermarket bait, very expensive bait.
I get many who want to know what is the perfect build. Which is not easy to answer because everyone does different things with their Jeep.
But I would like to share mine since my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn drives and handles absolutely amazing on and off road.
Keep in mind, I am NOT a rock crawler, I'm an adventurer who takes the family beach wheelin, beach camping, surf fishing, and we hit fun, moderate trails in the fall and winter getting to our favorite fishing holes and camp sites. Which is why the build is for what's near and for what we do, nothing was put on this TJ unnecessarily for show. I see too many "spotless Jeeps" with 33's - 38's.
As long as you have good off road instincts and common sense, a modest, high quality build will allow you and your family to have a lot of fun!
All in, I'm at $25k with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. And I can honestly say build wise, I'm done!! I might Raptor line it since the TJ has a few rough paint spots and won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping again. The best part is, this TJ not only keeps up, but outperforms a lot of these $40k - $75k JK's & JL' s. Due in part to people's inexperience and just "over building". The '05 TJ has a modest build, yet is extremely capable, durable and best of all, affordable.
I encourage any Jeeper to search for a rust free TJ 4.0 I6, preferably stock, 3.73's w/ LSD and a Dana 44. And to use my build as a "guide". But I highly recommend this build for anyone who is an adventurer, not a rock crawler. Best of all, it will eliminate you from chasing your tail, and the aftermarket will have one less "just empty every pocket" victim out there!
It was a lot of trial and error but it has been well worth it.
2" Old Man Emu coils
32" KO2's or 32" BFG MT's
Quadratec Baja alloy rims - perfect backspacing - no rub!
Currectlync steering
Freedom Off Road front adj track bar
M.O.R.E steering box brace
JKS quick disconnects
Freedom Off Road front lower Adjustable control arms
The rest are Fixed Detroit Axles
Transfer case drop kit
Fox 2.0 Shox
Fox steering stabilizer
Professional 4x4 shop to do the alignment
Since doing this, I have had the best experience with any vehicle I've ever had.
Staying with 32's allows us Jeepers to maintain that great low end torque, saves us a lot of money on unnecessary aftermarket parts and still be able to wheel most anywhere. It's the best of all worlds!
One of my favorite mods was added a Banks cat back exhaust giving it a throaty growl, but not obnoxiously loud. Absolutely perfect for the 4.0 I6.
Most importantly, be honest with yourself, build your TJ for what you will be using it for. And know YOU CAN do great trails and much more with just a 2" lift and 32" ko2's or MT's!
DO NOT let the aftermarket pushers fool or shame you into thinking you "need" 33" - 40" tires and a 5" lift to wheel. That's 🦬💩! They know full well, once they get you at 33's, it's a freaking cash cow for them! Because you just embarked on their multi thousand dollar build conveyor belt. And it's 100% unnecessary for moderate wheelin'! Your axles, drive train, drive shafts, engine, gearing and a host of a lot of other stuff now "needs" to be upgraded. The aftermarket pushers feast on naive people. Don't be that guy! Like cereal companies saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the aftermarket will continue to take advantage of the misinformed.

Very well said! Thank you for sharing!
Taking those angry eyes off was the most satisfying part of this video
Watching you two work on the White TJ gives me hope and plans on my 4-cylinder White TJ. Just wish I had the single nozzle TJ. Id like that Cascadia system.
Just joined your channel and I'm excited to watch your videos on this TJ. We have an 04 TJ with an automatic 4cyl. It's super clean though garaged for 20 years with only 75k. We're looking forward to your videos on this TJ.
Congrats! Wow, that sounds awesome!
I've had my TJ for 25ys, I keep upgrading the upgrades, lol. I can't wait to see the progress on this awesome truck TJ build!
Awesome! Thank you for your support and congrats on your jeep!
Hello my name is Eddie I live in Pico Rivera California I’m 60 years old I’ve been following you guys i’ve learned so much about jeeps I’m new into the jeep. in fact I am purchasing a jeep on Wednesday for my private seller who owned a jeep for 15 years it’s a 2001 jeep wrangler sport with a lift kit and really nice black. I’ve been through my research took your advice about what to look for. I just want to tell you you have been a big help to me and making the right decision I just hope buying this jeep this Wednesday would be the right cheap for me now I’m paying $9000 cash what do you think should I do go through the purchase or Wait thank you Greg I appreciate it buddy you’re an awesome guy let me know what you think thank you if you can mention it on this episode I appreciate it again my name is Eddie God bless keep up the good work you and your wife are awesome.
Hi Eddie, congrats on finally picking out and getting a jeep! If the frame and engine are in good condition, I say go for it! That's about the price you can expect to pay for it. You can also negotiate once you inspect it and after you drive it. They were asking 6000$ for this TJ and I took it home for 3800$. Good luck!
Oh this is Eddie at one more thing to ask the Jeep that I’m looking at has 128,000 original miles he’s a second owner and had it for 16 years
Hey guys , looking forward to seeing what your vision for this one is. I think you paid a fair price for it. Although it needs a lot of work I think it will be a fun project for you both . Thank you for taking that angry grill off Greg . Looking forward to your next video .
Thank you for the support! We are excited for this one too! The feeling of getting a new (to us) wrangler is magical every time
Looking so forward to all of the videos on this!!!!
Thank you for your support!!
I think you got a whopping deal on the price!!! Going to be fun watching you guys get this rig going!!! Great video!!
Yes we think so too! Not a bad price for a 2003 but boy it needs A Lot!
Looking forward to this project! It's always so exciting with a new (used) vehicle!
It really is! New to us :)
@@Garagecouple Are you planning on a conversion like a Brute kit, BTW (or is that something to reveal later, haha!)?
Well have to wait and see lol!
I love my TJ, I’m currently having to do the same.
Nice! Follow along for the ride!
Sweet!! Ok guys we gonna be watching this. I work on old metal too, (Camaros) Good Luck with your build.
Sweeet! Cheers!
I have a 98 SE with a 5 speed I wish I had the 6 cylinder it’s so slow especially the pick up speed I have 31’s it’s stock but it does good off road it has a lot of torque or at least the 2.5 did
It's definitely slower than our 6 cylinders but not as bad as we thought. It currently has 31s which will change soon
@@Garagecouple Not to bad. Lol
Put those 38s on it and then you'll wish you spent more for a 4.0!
@@robnobrc we've had 3 different 4.0s. We specifically wanted to build a 4 cylinder. Just to have that experience ya know
I'm looking forward to this 🐶👍
Thank you for your support!
Loved your video
Thank you!! Stay tuned for episode 2 this weekend
Excited 🎉 got a 2000 TJ
Woohoo! Congrats
Fiiinally a 4cyl represent! Lol
Lol! So far so good!
I say its worth it jeeps are by far the best vehicles to daily drive and bulit like tanks! i daily drive a 98 tj and a 98 zj both 4.0 6cyl and I gotta say I wouldn't have it any other way.
That sounds wonderful! We totally agree! We love our 3 jeeps! And hope we can have more to come!
Am looking forward to seeing how you gonna modify it.
Thank you! It's a blank canvas!
Please off road this one when it’s done
Hopefully sooner too!
@@Garagecouple yes!! Be careful out there, lots if icy trails. I had a close call last week in big bear. Half way up the trail i noticed it was covered in thick ice.
Oh dang. From pioneertown? OR which trail?
I was going up cactus road off of the 3n03 trail. Its super close to Baldwin lake. If you stay on the fire service road its not bad at all, but soon as you try climbing anything its game over. Lots of melting snowing which is causing the trails to be icy.
Oh wow. That's wild. Thanks for sharing that
What about the frame, how much rust.
Number 1 thing to look for in jeep
Totally! We made a video on what to look for when buying a used jeep. Some frame rust is ok, can be treated. As long as it's not fully rotten.
@@Garagecouple I got a jeep yesterday so I've been spamming jeep videos to educate myself on RUclips lol.
That's good to know, I got a 06 tj , with 170k miles, looks very good from far but up close on the Fram I felt rust chips inside the Frame, also where the drains are in the driver side , the hole as a rusting rim. I'm not to familiar with rust but it does scare me (mostly because I don't know the full cost of repair)
Hola chicos !!!! Ya hacía falta un nuevo proyecto 👍
Y lo lleven a otro nivel al nuevo integrante de la familia!!!! Saludos desde 🇲🇽👋
Appreciate you+!!!!
Looking forward to you fixing it up. Definitely need's some help. Looks like a marine abandoned it at Camp Pendleton.
Lol! That's funny. Totally
cool project - i was waiting to see the GC in working action again! (don't really like all these yt-shorts to be honest)
Appreciate your feedback! We love making these videos. Well just keep our shorts to instagram and tik tok :)
Some Smittybilt tube flat fender replacements in the front would look nice as well as some matching tube style rear flares and body armor, I also wanna know who rides the scooter?
We actually have a crazy good plan for the fenders. Going to be very involved but look awesome! That's all Greg! He's ridden it in some previous episodes
@@Garagecouple I gotta see that!
Hello from snowy Spokane WA!
Cheers!!!
I was waiting for this release!
What do you think?
@@Garagecouple It's definitely a fixer upper! I'll be watching as you both are trying to mod it up!
Thank you for your support! It totally is!
@@Garagecouple I bet the weather is slowing you both down right now! Wasn't that a crazy storm!
Oh absolutely. Snowing around us, which hasn't happened in 40+ years!
I love your show!
I am also transforming a 2005 LJ Unlimited with A/C.
Purchase price……$1500 Canadian😮
Wow! Would love to buy one at that price! Send some our way and we'll build some epic rigs
Hello why you removed your rooftop tent from your red jeep????
We don't keep it on full time because we don't want it to get stolen and because it reduces Mpg quite a bit
Sweet. Been looking for some RUclips videos on the TJ SE models. Most are 4.0 models. I JUST got a SE model myself, take a look at mine! I wanted a base model, no bells or whistles, TJ and also one that is cheap. I definitely got a great deal. Check mine out of my page. Can’t wait to see your truck build. I need some ideas! Keep the videos coming
Congrats! Well check it out!
lol @ Ah... everyone.
Lolol
Keeps the cubs license plate frame 😭 coming from a Chicagoan lol
Lolol it's only a matter of time...
Yeah a 2.4 !
Our very first!!!
Oh man, $3800 for that? Your Jeep prices are insanely high over there! I bought my latest (stock) 4.0 TJ in far better condition for $1680 (AU$2500) about a month back. Before that was a built 4.0 TJ (winch, lift, wheels, tyres, roof rack, hard top, etc, etc) for my partner last year for $4000 (AU$6000) here in Australia.
We totally pay more! Must be nice to buy then at your prices! A decent 4.0 is at least 10k here
@@Garagecouple Yeah, but the downside here is upgrade parts are expensive due to shipping from the USA and the fact that Jeeps aren't that popular here. Not to try and get a free plug, but I recently uploaded a couple of videos of the two TJ's I mentioned. Check them out if you're interested in just how cheap decent Jeeps can be over here. 😀
It's worth paying a little extra to get the 6, rather than wasting time with the 4 cylinder,,,,,,,,,,,,
Not sure if you saw but we have had 4 other 6 cylinder jeeps. This is our 5thA
LS swap it.
3800 in CA is normal
Actually same year and miles in good working condition out here is closer to 10k
Don’t be punks, chop it add 12” and sleeve the frame.
Lmao! Maybe one day!
Throw the 4 cyl away
Not bad. Gets 17mpg
Yes but the six-cylinder back then made it legendary the 4.0 500000 mile engine
