IMO Sam was a better RL player than Sonny Bill Williams and could have been a better Union player than him too, but was rushed in to the England set up and used as the whipping boy for the mistakes and shortcomings of others. Imagine if they had done the same thing to Jason Robinson a few years earlier.

@wildebest not many back rowers hit Billy Vunipola the way Sam Burgess did. Or hit the gain line at pace like Burgess did. Or get through the work load that Burgess did at 6. Or smash people backwards, even as he had to learn the differences in tackle technique
Burgess was a physical beast and needed more time to bed into a proper position.

I didn't feel like Burgess earned his place at RWC 2015, he was definitely fast tracked but I dont believe he's the reason we went out at the group, 2019 would have just been a better goal for him ultimately, he'd have had about 5 years in the game and we could have seen him reach his real potential in union, unfortunately we'll never know how good he could have been it's so disappointing

Absolutely, Eddie coaches like a league team and has a league background being an Aussie. Sam would've been an absolute nightmare for any defence if they'd used him as a ball carrying 8. Over time he could've developed his skills around the ruck and set piece and gone on to be a legend of the game what a shame

The way some of the coaches and rugby journos have their hands in each others trousers should be a source of national shame. The old boys clubs working narratives faster than Dan Brown. Burgess is a self entitled substance abuser who cannot be honest with people close to him. The domestic violence allegations were not 'made up' and his legendary drug use and prescription pill use all add up to a very unstable person, capable of anything. He was givien a free pass by the Courts, the Police and the NRL. Another example of the love that men have for each other when sports are involved, one set of rules for them, another for the rest of us.

Burgess is a great RL player, he was not a great RU player, just a physical specimen. The RFU made a big error of judgement in pushing him into the England set up, they tried to rush it through when they couldn’t even agree with Bath which position he should play. Burgess was never going to stay beyond the RWC window before going back to league, so the experiment was always destined to fail. Different skillset to the likes of Robinson, who’s running abilities we see once a generation if we are lucky.
