  • I bought a partially finished new reproduction of a Chestnut canoe company Fox 14' canoe. I installed new #12 canvas, canvas filler and Interlux Brightside paint and new spruce gunnels.

    So glad I found your channel. I'm sure I will watch them all...many times.
    Tomorrow I am floating 8ish miles in a early season canoe race...and it snowed yesterday. Its 22 degrees this AM...the river we are headed to is rough and filled with pretty good rapids...but I have a tough, big canoe picked out for it. AT 55 years old, it's not my favorite way to paddle... but I have a family member who loves the challenge of it every year. We did it together last year too. It's cold when you dunk...but no one dies, lol.
    I look forward to quieter, sunny days with my little, light OT pack canoe soon... maybe another month and it will be time. I'm alone on most paddles...just me and the fish I love to catch from my canoes. Nothing better to me than the still quiet of early mornings with a canoe gliding thru the mist.
    Thank you again for all these wonderful, inspiring paddling videos.

      That's going to be a cold day on the river, have fun and be safe. I agree, nothing better than quiet water in a canoe. Enjoy, it won't be long now.

      That's some great news, I haven't been able to make it up there for a few years but my son and I have made plans to go to Lows the last week of October for a week of deer camp this fall. I need the help carrying around the upper dam, he hunts hard. Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Robin how are you keeping mate? We celebrated ANZAC Day here a couple of weeks ago in Australia ( we commemorate the Australian & New Zealand Army Corp from WW1 and beyond) and my mate Pedro, whom I mentioned previously, marched with some of his community vets. I went to a dawn service that was well attended. You seem to be keeping well and I trust aching to get back on the water in your spring. So happy to see this new entry and look forward to many more. By the way our canoe trip in Feb was a bit of a disaster- water at the beginning and end but not much in the middle; dragged my new canoe about 15 kms over scrub and rock. Ah well. Cheers Pete from Australia

    Great job! That’s a beautiful canoe. What kind of maintenance does canvass require?

    • @RobinLauer
      @RobinLauer  3 года назад +2

      Proper storage, out of the elements is most important. Canvas can last a long time but if the canoe is used for tripping it might need replacement earlier, maybe 5 seasons if it's worked hard. Sand and paint more often, maybe a patch here and there will prolong the life of the canvas. Thanks for the comment.

    • @RobinLauer
      @RobinLauer  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, I make my own, I have used long ash ripped from some 18' clear 1x5" rs planks I have, I have bought ash boards from Lowes (1x6", 10') and ripped and spliced them, they came out really nice with a 8" splice. On this canoe I bought some spruce "lathe"1x3 from Lowes, 16' lenght and ripped them. That was some really knotty wood, but for now it works till I find a source of clear spruce. I like spruce rather than ash now for the weight savings as I age. Haha

    Hi Mr. Lauer, Beautiful Canoe! When you put the Canvas on, do you also cover it with Fiberglass? thanks Dan

    • @RobinLauer
      @RobinLauer  3 года назад

      Thanks Dan, No, never fiberglass, after the canvas is installed a filler is brushed on. There are various fillers but I used the traditional formula that takes about 35 days to cure. It makes the canvas waterproof, then it is sanded and painted. There is a book called This Old Canoe by Mike Elliot, it is an excellent reference for restoring a wood canvas canoe, and it has the recipe for the traditional formula, the money you save making your own filler will cover the cost of the book. Hope this helps, what canoe do you have? Robin

      @@RobinLauer No Canoe yet, but i have seen a few on different places that were available at attractive prices if you knew how to restore them. The beauty of the canoes along with the history (always makes me think of Bill Mason) i have always wanted a wood and canvas. I will pick up the book. My brother is moving to Maine in a few weeks, and I know there are a lot more up there that might be located for restoration.

    I am looking at purchasing a canoe.
    The person says it is a Chestnut Chum..
    It has no serial number or decals...
    Do you know how i could be sure its a Chum just by looking at pictures?
    Thanks
