Inside Donaldson's department store in the 1980s

Here is raw footage taken inside Donaldson's department stores in the 1980s. The original department store was on Nicollet Avenue and Sixth Street in Minneapolis, and the Donaldson's brand grew to be one of the major retail chains in the Twin Cities, rivaling Dayton's. It was started by two immigrant brothers from Scotland.

This is at Southdale mall. I worked at the mall during this time frame.

At that time Southdale was the most upmarket mall in the Twin Cities.

Before cellphones and online shopping people had to actually interact with each other to do their shopping. And there was no scanners or self check out lines. Cashiers had to ring up every item manually by hand.
I miss the old days of movie rentals. I thought it was fun to go out and look at movies before renting them.

The other day I experienced something truelly weird I walk into a super market and I did not talk or had a single inter action with any one in the store not even eye contact I dont typically used the self serve check out but when i ve used it I needed help so i needed to speak with someone not this time I felt lonely and weird Imagine all those lonely senior that go to the market just to have some contacts with other and soon all this will be gone too.....

what are you talking about? There was no such thing as privacy because there was no way for any one to know what you were doing unless you told people your business but if you are doing that privacy is not a concern...

This B roll was definitely shot at the Southdale Center in Edina, MN. I worked at that mall for 3 years in the late 80’s. It really brings me back!
