The blades are sharp, very sharp. The one minus that everyone should be aware of is you need to be very careful taking the cutting unit out of the box. There’s a plastic guard so you don’t cut fingers as you take the main unit out of the box but it’s not taped down. As I took the unit out, I ended cutting a piece of my shirt. The plastic guard moved and my shirt touched one of the blades.
At 2:02 you zoom in and you can see that broken weld where the main mounting bracket meets the deck. That is a defect on all of those old type Craftsman mower decks. If that bracket lifts up the spindle pulleys will eat up your blade brake arms. That can be fixed by welding the bracket back on the top and underneath and adding a gusset to make it stronger. Then check the welds on the front -(other side)- of the same bracket they are probably starting to crack too.
So i have a mower like this with the old style 42" mowing deck. The other day the idler pulley seized up and shredded the flat-side of the belt. I went to Tractor supply and purchased a "replacement belt" which is K-force brand, part number 144200. This K-force belt is supposed to work on 38" and 42" decks. It does not work on my mower, i installed it and the blades turned when the blade lever was on and when it was off too. I tried adjusting the engagement linkage but that didn't change anything. Best i can come up with is this belt has the incorrect V-profile making it shorter as it doesn't go into the v-pulleys as deep. it might have the right outer measurement but it won't work. I just ordered a Husqvarna belt from Jacks small engines. Hopefully it will work.
Hi to TheOutdoorPowerGuy. I bought one belt that was too long (111") and exchanged it for a part #138255 (1/2" by 95.5") and it is still too long. Even with the belt engagement lever pulled up it still is not tight. I removed the deck, blew off the accumulated dried and packed grass. I also checked the old fashioned tension springs and they are OK. I also threaded the new belt through the pulleys EXACTLY as described in the deck belt diagram. Still too loose. I double checked that all levers and connections are attached as it was before. (I took photos so as to not make a mistake on where everything goes)
Hi there, do you have a video or something showing what the stop is supposed to look like on this old-style mowing deck, the stop that you refer to that keeps the pulley from going too far forward which caused the back side of the belt to drag on the mowing deck bracket. thanks
it's pretty straight forward , about 5 snap pins, i can have a deck like this off in about 3 minutes, if i ever get one in that needs to come off i'll do a video on it.
I have 2 of them,14&15 hp Kohler, the deck spring system is different on the 14 hp, it's a little bit older than the 15 hp.All you do is locate the clips, raise the tractor up, makes it easier and just remove the pin with a pair of pliers or similar tools such as channel locks, I think there are 6-7 pins.
Hi, this particular deck in the video does not use a cable type system to engage it, this one in the video uses the old-style rod mechanism. thanks for watching and commenting. :)
How unprofessional, use a the right tools for the right job, hammer marks are unprofessional also. One more thing,a professional will get a piece of cardboard and gloves.Professionals don't get dirty and keep their work area uncluttered.
I've got a deck completely rebuilt, painted, new pulley, numbers still on the original blades,he said 87" belt,my 2 decks call for 88"and 101" for the 15hp hydro static
Problem we are having right now of finding the right length!! 83 inch belt is too short!! And not wrapping around pully's!! It's being a bitch! And grass don't stop growing unfortunately 😔

@@TheOutdoorPowerGuy 88.38 long and 1/2 wide ?
@@digitaldan189 Correct the size is 1/2 x 88.38" long or 1/2 x 88-3/8" long.
Im using 1/2in x 89in v belt
Greetings,
Do you know what size belt was used for this mower deck? Thank you for any input!
You can run that mower deck on the cable type if you have the old cable deck on hand to change over the ider pulleys
I'd like to see you put that back on the tractor
how so you tighten or adjust a loose belt
craftsman
Thank you great video

great video.
I have the same deck however my belt will not engage
Are all craftsman decks interchangeable
no, not all decks are interchangeable. some are, however majority of them are not.
@@TheOutdoorPowerGuy I'll have to check them out thanks
I’m pretty sure those brakes stop the pulleys from turn when DISENGAGED....
you are correct, the brakes stop the spindle pulley's from spinning when disengaging the blades.
sure would like to see the cable system

Hey dude when you put the cotter pin in you used a ratchet and socket. That was not a hammer! And you said it’s a educational video!
