In this video i show how to correctly replace a deck belt on a Craftsman/AYP 42" deck that uses the old style rod engagement system to engage the blades, this style was used from around 94 to the year 2000, after 2000, the engagement system was a cable type system that pulled the idler pulley and brake arm back to engage the blades, the cable system type uses a longer belt and the pulleys are not as off-set. I will link a video via an annotation to a deck belt replacement i did on a cable type deck.
thank you all for watching!
This was very helpful to me struggling with first time dropping deck but did not pull away from mower. Old style that I to am working on had me buffalo's misses one connection with the floppy engaging rod.Bingo, next day fresh eyes and another look at this video ,hit the right hole and viola.sucrss. only thing smoked the old belt after mowing one hundred yards.Tomorrow, new belt, more carefully installed..BINGO.thanks for posting belt info...
Wanted to thank you for the video, it was very informative , I ordered a deck rebuild kit , but the belt in the kit was too big but your belt numbers were spot on ... Thanks because I converted my cable deck to a bar engagement style much better .... Big thanks for the video
Great video. I think the stopper you referenced for the idler pulley is gone on my deck. Can that be fixed?
Needed some reference for the linkage. Thanks. They had it screwed up like everything else on the mower.
Right Belt, Easy Install
I'm having the same issue with the idler pulley moving too far. Which plate has the stopper attached? This is the only video I've found which has mentioned this. Thanks
Hi xctome. Thanks for the nice and clear video. How can I find out part number of the belt that will fit my Craftsman ? It's impossible to find an owner manual for such an old machine! Thanks!
saym64 contact Sears home parts direct or something like that online and put your model number and your serial number in and there’s probably every part you need for your craftsman
Mine had the model number under the seat and on the hood it had the deck belt and the drive belt with their part number and along with a list of things you can get for the mower.
give this a look, I found online ..... file:///C:/Users/Capt.%20Morgan/Desktop/Manuals/Craftsman_917252531_manual.pdf
worked for me !
How in the world did u get your entire deck out from under ur mower?doni really have to do it that way, does the whole deck slide out or something,I just bought a belt and got to do this!ty for your help.
The Stopper that is missing on the bottom plate that keeps the flat idler pulley from going to far forward, is that plate replaceable? Mine is missing also and my belt comes off when disengaged. Is there a model number for this part ? I have the manual downloaded but don't see where there's a number on the plate. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated also this video was a blessing. I've been working on rebuilding mine going on 5 months now and the part where you mention the stopper keeping the pulley from going forward, no other video has mentioned this. Thankyou
I think it’s welded but I have a extra deck that would save you money!! If you still have it ??
Look for the broken weld where the main bracket is welded to the deck. Center of the deck at the bottom of that bracket that the blade brake arms are bolted to. When that weld is broken the bracket raises enough for the blade brake arms to get chewed up by the spindle pulleys. Same thing happened on mine and I am getting it welded back down today. Must be a common problem on these old decks. Tell the welder to weld it from the top and add a gusset to make it stronger. Then flip the deck over and weld it through the slot in the bottom.
This is super helpful I’ve replaced like 4 break arms on mine it was maddening, i don’t know if i have it in me to do another major repair on what was a $ 250 garage sale buy.
I have been looking for a video or anything on this deck for about two days. My brake is sheard off. You wouldn't happen to have pn for the brake arms would you?
Awesome video btw!
good stuff
Man I've been a mechanic for 52 years I bought a riding lawn mower just like this on your video it's a Craftsman LT1000 I took the mower deck out and there's three linkages on the back one short one two about 12 in 15 in long The one I know where it goes the other that goes down in the deck that pulls the belt tensioner I'm not sure how that one goes I have your video frozen but the ride looks different I should have known better I should have took pictures got any ideas hit me back thank you God bless
Thanks for the video
PLEASE SHOW US HOW TO CHANGE THE SPROKET !
Why dose noone show how to reinstall the deck on the lawn mower.someone gave me a lawn mower with this exact deck and I am not understanding how the deck engager spring hooks back up
I recently changed the belt on my poulan mower and now the blades won't engage any idea where I may have went wrong. It has the cable engage system
are the parts interchangeable between the two i have a older mower like that. deck rusted out i have two of the newer style decks
Parts are non-interchangeable, pulleys are different, only identical parts are the spindles and blades.
oh ok thanks
Newer driving mowers are being made with plastic pulleys instead of metal. I have 2 of those old 42 inch decks and just sanded down one to repaint it so it don't rot out
I can NOT STAND the youtube commercials
I dont know how that belt works with all that slack. Im new to riding mowers and on my first go on this craftsman the deck belt snapped, which brought me here
How doe😢the rod go on after it comes Off
Whew!!!
I have this same mower deck and my blades won't engage
If you're looking for the lawn mower belt part number 4l950k, l144959
I have a 1998 LT1000 craftsman does any one know deck belt size
Does it have a cable engagement that goes to deck or a linkage rod? It's a 144200 for the rod system, 144959 for cable engagement
Two belt
