I can read Japanese. Here’s some additional info I could glean from the text: *On “Cody”:* American Ryu is not a bully, but a detective. *On the Tea Master:* He’s referred to as a Judo practitioner who can only use throws and locks. And he has a hot wife. The text and diagram above flesh out his concept a little and it’s really interesting. Punch buttons are labeled "throw" and the kick buttons are labeled “joints,” as in the joint locking used in Judo. It says that if you press a button he’ll attempt to grab you by the collar, but blocking will result in you just being tugged a bit. *On the “Islam Demon”:* The word used, *majin,* has no direct translation, but it *is* used for Djinns/Genies (among others). It can refer to basically any supernatural or demonic human like being. Dragon Ball’s Majin Buu and Mazinger Z are both “majins.” *On Torogo*: It actually just looks like the word “fly” and the word “Taekwondo” below it. The machine translation messed up, obviously. *On the Assassin*: Dunno what inspired him, but it says he uses praying mantis style.
I don't care if they wouldn't have fit the series very well, I would have loved it to have seen a velociraptor and a giant mandrill as a playable character.
If you see carefully Assassin later inspired Rashid in Street Fighter 5 , not only in appearance also the drawing shows him like making a circular move and Rashid spins so fast that he creates tornadoes for attack his opponents.
With Rollerblade, I would like to point out that in the original SF3 roster, we have Yun and Yang, with the former making his entrance on a skateboard and the latter making his on rollerblades. It seems that original concept did carry over a little to the original game. Some of the attacks of Martin, on the other hand, strike me as being Darkstalkers inspired, like the mist being emitted from his body being much like an attack Rikuo uses. Now, Darkstalkers did come before this character, but it does seem to me that that’s where much of the inspiration probably came from. I would say Martin would have been a better fit for Darkstalkers than for Street Fighter. With Assassin, it seems to me like part of the inspiration for Fang’s appearance may have come from Assassin’s concept, and I also see a small amount of Rashid in his concept, so maybe Rashid was inspired by that concept. With Marionette Master, I do see some strong similarities to Huitzil, but Darkstalkers came out in 1994, and Huitzil was in the original game, so depending on when this art was originally drawn, which I’m thinking was likely after Darkstalkers’ concept came about, I would guess Huitzil likely inspired Marionette Master and not the other way around.
The idea for the one that looks like a monster could have evolved in to Kongou from Red Earth. Perhaps thats where the design of Hauzer also came from. I'm just glad they didn't go with any of the ideas (bar tea man, who could've slotted in to any other streetfighter quite nicely). I actually quite like the fig leaf wearing character, but I think its obvious that he became Urien.
There was also a giant mandrill boss in the game Battle Circuit, who along with his partner, a woman in a pith helemet who I forgot the name of, was basically supposed to be a parody of real life person Dian Fossey. Still, it's the closest thing we got to Martin in a Capcom game.
I can't say I love all these ideas, but they certainly are interesting. The Pankration user certainly caught my eye, though, as did the assassin. I'm fond of a tabletop RPG system known as GURPS; both back as a teenager in the 90s and in the modern version of the game, there is a supplement called GURPS Martial Arts, and it features a nice variety of styles from around the world. *Relevance* here is that is where I learned Pankration was a thing, as well as several other styles woefully underrepresented in your typical fighting games.
The Pankration Man made me think how funny could be a fighting game whose characters are the most famous paintings and sculptures coming to life, and how their fighting style would reflect their nature. Some would be very senseful as fighter while others would be very wacky yet interesting.
Pankration Man may have also been a concept for Reworked Marisa for SF6 since she is big and fight style is Pankration, The American Fighter that supposed to be similar to Ryu could be LUKE SF5 and SF6, DR could me JP as you mentioned. Tea Master could be a reworked concept for Jaime since he was supposed to have medicinal tea in his jug.
I'd guess the doctor character was meant to be a take on Senoh. I could see the story for that game playing out something like the Street Fighting Alpha anime, (the first one) where Shadaloo mad scientist Sadler is holding a tournament to collect date on power Street Fighters; this would later get used as the story for Street Fighter 4. Could be possible they were thinking of doing that for Street Fighter 3 originally. I could see the puppet character acting something like a Stand in Capcom’s JoJo game. There’s some anime and manga with people using marionettes to fight, and it’s pretty Stand like. Would be interesting if some gameplay idea for that character is why the JoJo game ended up coming about.
I don't in any way doubt that Capcom had an even more crazy idea for SFIII since pretty much every Street Fighter decision in the post SFII days was "what's the best way to NOT give our audience what they want?"
The 'D'Jinn' looks like Azam, Rashid's assistant from Street Fighter V. Martin looks like that 'Fluffy' monster from the 'Creepshow' movie. Keep up the good work, my Good Man!
The character creation process is interesting, sometimes an early sketch can lead to a seemingly totally different final character. In the end, its all just fiction, but if done right, the character become believable.
Martin might have been evolved into one of the Battle Circuit bosses, "Doc & Jennifer". The mandrill look for both designs seems to be inspired in the character from the Baoh manga.
Marionette Master... It's probably inspired with the old Karakuri art in Japan... The mechanical marionettes that were seen up until the 19th century, and the funny part is that Karakuri in Japan managed to be as advanced as European puppets due to the wild imagination of their creators... Then again, the only real Karakuri I've seen in fighters was from SamSho 6. On a sidenote, this roster actually feels more japanese centered... I mean, a tea master, a Karakuri, a ninja... Considering that this artwork dates from '95/'96 (because SF3 was launched on February 4, 1997) and seeing the final launch roster, Akiman made one hell of a job with so much proposals, and Capcom recentered the character to fit the SF universe. Still, a positive surprise to see some of these concepts were later on reused on SF4 P.S. it's in these older designs that we can actually feel the huge influence Hirohiko Araki had on all these creators. Edit: besides Araki, you can also see the influence of Keisuke Itakagi with the Tea Master looking like Izou Motobe from Grappler Baki😉
A lot of these are interesting but I would've hate to see them in a Street Fighter game haha. Although some people criticize the series for it (and not that I always blame them), but I've always liked that Street Fighter's designs are relatively grounded and simple. You definitely get your oddball characters, but a whole roster of them would've been a bit much. Tea Master does perhaps seem the most interesting of the bunch, and I got a chuckle out of the American Ryu who's described as a bully but uses Aikido, which makes little sense considering it's a defensive art haha. And Doctor kinda reminds me of an older Dr. Sadler from the Street Fighter Alpha movie Wouldn't mind just seeing a brand new game come out with all these characters, which I guess was the original intention haha
Assassin looks a bit like he might have represented the ancient order of the Hashishins from the mountain fortress of Hassan I Sabbah. They were highly trained and feared killers who were responsible for many high profile assassinations in the Middle Ages and rumored to possess magical powers.
@ 00:56 It WAS that but i bought Street Fighter 3 even though the roster just didn't do it for me the way Street Fighter II or Eternal Champions did. Mahvel however, was also out then and for many of us was our #1 played game in spite of the 4 button scheme which at first sounded like it would be shallow and mk like but the increased number of different characters and possibilities with assists and the ability to fight as a team.....What i'm saying is Mahvel didn't distract us, It had pretty much become "Street Fighter" for most of the people i knew. :)
JP's full name appears to be Johan Petrovic, and he is indeed a scholar of sorts on top of being a successful businessman who is pretty much responsible for the success of a Tibetan inspired nation called Nayshall. Oh, and btw, his fighting style uses psycho power, and the craziest current theory suggests that he might be able to summon Bison's spirit to do his bidding. So he does have similarities to both "Doctor" and JP Morgan.
Where did you get the whole "Tea Master" thing? The whole text says he's a Jujutsu Fighter, and uses fight techniques that are mostly indirect, from a distance. Where does that story come from?
this is illuminating. i think the velociraptor concept is then used for Namco x Capcom, when they created Allosaurus instead. The shape is almost the same. I remember Martin as i had Baoh comics and Ovas, so it was so familiar. Too much useless for all the masters, but you know, @Top Hat, The Jinn\Djinn guy is most probably a reused concept as we already had a moustache giant from Turkey or Arabia before SFIII, and we're talking about DARUN MISTER, from Street Fighter EX (1996). Almost the same look, if you compare them. Sure, the genie would be nicer to play with, but i think the concept was drawn after having already Darun around. To bring Arabian fighters on SF3 as well. When i saw this "American Ryu" i thought about Alex from Bare Knuckle aka Streets of Rage (1991), as the look is basically the same. Interesting take, Yours, to make him Cody Travers from the other famous title, Final Fight. The others, sorry to say, are not on par. Tea Master would be interesting, if not resembling some more obscure games from 80s. But worth of further development. Aside from F.A.N.G's body swaps\early concepts of the various masters, the rest is meh. Yeah, all possible character to choose from for the SFIII roster, but still. Some were worth, some not. Thanks for the share, it made me connect some points out of doubts i had for years.
It sounds like these characters could actually make their own video game that would be a time shattered fighting game. You have a robot from the past or future that could be a robot that was sent back to restore time and wiped out the dinosaurs and then shut off and then got reactivated. I don't answer from the past that could have been experimented on. A Greek fighter of a lost art of pancreation. The Tea man from Japan. A caparella fighter, a ninja, and more. It could easily be made into its own storyline for its own fighting game.
The Demon of Islam is very Karnov ... esque. The business guy is similar to Norimaro in MVC. The multi fist character might be inspired by Fatal Fury characters or even Ken, fist of the north star characters.
The pankration man, who had his private covered up. Just darken his skin and trim his hair some, as well as a short toga on his waist area. This would be Urine.
Great video! You'd think Capcom would have wanted the company it outsourced the task of developing the 30th Anniversary Collection of Street Fighter to include the sketches you references. Their lack of inclusion in the collection serves to back up my opinion that the collection was a lazy cash grab that was mostly just an overpriced collection of ROM dumps.
I would love if DarkStalkers 4 introduced the raptor and the mandrill as one character, puppet style, where in the prehistoric times, one was about to eat the other but got frozen in the ice age or a villain brought them to the present and now have to coexist each other to survive.
Would have loved a Dino, like Riptor on KI 1. Riptor was my goto PvP because his unbreakable combo . I believe it was 9 hit combo. Got my faqs off user boards
Personally I found the assassin one to be the coolest I don’t know I just thought that he could’ve had some really interesting potential, maybe with his weird perception altering abilities he was earlier version of twelve.
Yes it could have been one of many possible types of beings in other dimensions in your vision. When you unlock the third eye you can sometimes see more or less. This is normal as the universe and our bodies have more to them than they often seem.
I would have loved to see a pancration fighter in Streetfighter. It sounds like a great idea. this game is coming off as a mixture of Red Earth and Dark Stalkers for some reason.
I've freaking adore concert art having Wonders what could happen and scrap characters , designs again I'm inspired Assassin , marionette master Tea master ,martin deserve to be seen
The Assassin guy really looks like inspired from some wuxia movie or novel, where fighters can, through the manipulation of Xi-energy and thus the elements create weapons or fists out of thin air. Just remember the two blind musicians from Kung Fu Hustle who turn out to be assassins and can harm their opponents, send them blades and blows by playing their instruments/manipulating the vibrations of air. Those two were inspired by a wuxia movie from the 70s (I don't remember the name) which again is based on a novel (which I don't remember either). There was actually a business or rather salesman in Street Fighter: Skullomania used to be, according to his background story, a salesman before he "lost his mind". Edit: looked it up, the novel is called "Deadfull Melody" while the movie is called "The Six Fingered Demon ASSASSIN". Which makes matters rather complicated though, is the fact that Fang actually, with his clothes and sunglasses, looks like the assassins from Kung Fu Hustle.
I'm willing to bet many of these concepts were reused or slightly altered through the years after SF3. You can already see some of the obvious reuse even during the development of the game. I half way wonder if "Tea Man" was turned into Necalli simply because of the shortness of the character and the hair along with his second more serious form. The "assassin" character makes me think of Rasheed with the tornado body and his turban.
13:45 That one was recycled and used later as a stage boss in another Capcom´s game named "Battle Circuit" which was the last 2D "beat them up" ever made by the company.
I feel like "Watch Over" wasn't necessarily a ninja character but more akin to a judge / referee type, like Kuroko from Samurai Shodown, since the game had that mechanic. He was probably replaced by the Judgment Girls.
What were those 3d fight animations from?! I remember it was on some show like deadliest warrior but not that i dont think. Something early 2000’s im assuming, history channel or spike o somethin
the sfIII games are a lot of fun. Its true that nobody cared when that came out, in fact, i can say i never ever saw a SFIII arcade cabinet, or any iteration of it. First time i played the game was on MAME.
I actually would have liked the raptor, mandrill, and robot in the game. Though it's never going to happen, I would like to see Capcom look back into them and revive them for a future Street Fighter game.
The Tea Master might be inspired by Motobe from Baki, although I'm only saying that cause he kinda looks like him and in the text of concept art it says "Jiu Jitsu Practitioner".
To me Martin looks like he would have fit in better with the "Darkstalkers" cast, the same for the Velociraptor, the Marionette Master, and that Assassin looking guy.
I always thought SFIII's character designed leaned too much towards weirdness. SFII had a balance of cool characters (Guile/Chun Li/Ryu/Ken), intimidating characters (E-Honda/Zangief), and weird characters (Blanka/Dhalsim). But in SF3, so many are Blanka/Dhalsim level weird (Q, Necro, Oro, Twelve) and many others have a weird touch as well. And they are weird in ways that are hard to relate to - maybe because many of them don't smile or show a range of emotion. They just stand there looking aloof or stern, and I can't tell what they're thinking or what they are about, other than the design shouting "look at me, I'm so unusual!" Sure, Guile may have an unusual hairstyle too, but I can tell what he's about just by looking at him. The hair is just an extra oomph of flair that adds to the overall package. But I can't tell what Remy is about and he feels to me like he has strange fashion for the sake of having strange fashion.
there is also a busnesmen in the Jap/us copy of Marvel superhero V Streetfighter by the name of Nroamu who mimics Ryu megaman and antia ( from Darkstalkers ) he was a hidden Char and often teamed up with Dan or Omga Red...
You forgot about TERRY BOGARD WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDIED FOR STREET FIGHTER 1, but the developers left and took their material and founded SNK . TERRY IS A STREET FIGHTER CHARACTER.
Again, the other ones are "Man with Poison Hands" and "Flying Taekwondo". Who's Torogo? What kind of research did you actually do? Were you in contact with someone who can read the text?
I would have liked to seen more newer characters in street fighter 6 but I'm happy with what they have shown so far . The game looks amazing I hope at least they will bring us dlc characters that we haven't seen in a while maybe even some characters from their other titles I would love to see some dark stalker characters or maybe some characters from their other fighting games. That's one thing I wish they would do more of that mortal kombat does a phenomenal job at . We get to play characters that we would never think we could play as which makes the game fun and more interesting and something I'm willing to spend money on. Like maybe they can give us some dark stalker characters for Halloween and some fatal fury characters at another time .
From the picture in the thumbnail you can see why those characters are part of the lost roster! Who is that character with the magic leaf floating in front of his private bits, Adam??
What nobody talks about was that SFIII was intended originally to be a new IP, which is probably why there are so many weird characters in this.
Yeah this is a fairly little known fact that came about recently (IIRC from Akiman himself). Even aside from the odd characters, it explains why the plan even after it was changed to SFIII was to have a completely new cast, until bad reactions to that led to them adding Ken and Ryu later in development (poor Sean haha).

I don't answer from the past that could have been experimented on. A Greek fighter of a lost art of pancreation. The Tea man from Japan. A caparella fighter, a ninja, and more. It could easily be made into its own storyline for its own fighting game.
Very Interesting Top Hat. Sounds like Dark Stalkers to me or Bloody Roar that capcom was getting ready to invest in.
Correction: Urion, Gil's brother
Yes we need the tea master. Him folding his coat at the beginning of the fight would be so cool.
The genie character seems like he would become Dudley. He looks very much inspired by the wrestler, The Iron Sheik, as did Dudley.
That's Rufus from SFIV lol
Yes it could have been one of many possible types of beings in other dimensions in your vision. When you unlock the third eye you can sometimes see more or less. This is normal as the universe and our bodies have more to them than they often seem.
I would have loved to see a pancration fighter in Streetfighter. It sounds like a great idea.
this game is coming off as a mixture of Red Earth and Dark Stalkers for some reason.
CAPCOM!!! GIVE US BUSSINESSMAN!!!
I've freaking adore concert art having
Wonders what could happen and scrap characters , designs again I'm inspired
Assassin , marionette master
Tea master ,martin deserve to be seen
Damn. These are actually pretty awesome.
SF3 universe was quite exotic in terms of characters. I'm happy they didn't push it further as it would lean too much towards Darkstalkers.
The idea of Cody originally being the main protag of 3rdS is awesome
I'm most interested in the Raptor. I wonder how that potential character would have ended up playing like and their rival for the game
I absolutely love your content bro! Still shocks me that you don't have more subs/views!
And you're a wrestler!
You're a badass dude 😎
Yeaaaaahhhhh
Tea master could get his own game.
Tea Master looks like it was split into Hugo, Dudley and Oro
Interesting to see fang and Rashid pop up in concept art for sf3
I'm willing to bet many of these concepts were reused or slightly altered through the years after SF3. You can already see some of the obvious reuse even during the development of the game. I half way wonder if "Tea Man" was turned into Necalli simply because of the shortness of the character and the hair along with his second more serious form. The "assassin" character makes me think of Rasheed with the tornado body and his turban.
Your Love of The Tea Master is THE Equivilent of Matt McMuscle's Love for Zubaz.
In Capcom's Battle Circuit there's a boss similar to Martin.
The Business man it's Mike from Body Blows series.
Wasn't ken the American version of Ryu?
13:45 That one was recycled and used later as a stage boss in another Capcom´s game named "Battle Circuit" which was the last 2D "beat them up" ever made by the company.
Really cool to see all these unused designs 😎😎😎
I feel like "Watch Over" wasn't necessarily a ninja character but more akin to a judge / referee type, like Kuroko from Samurai Shodown, since the game had that mechanic. He was probably replaced by the Judgment Girls.
What were those 3d fight animations from?! I remember it was on some show like deadliest warrior but not that i dont think. Something early 2000’s im assuming, history channel or spike o somethin
The doctor looks like Wiley from Mega Man
Holy Im here an hour before that’s wild
the sfIII games are a lot of fun.
The long lost fighters! Meet Exhibitionist Guy, Giant Mandrill and Cody 2.0...
The fighting style of the Assassin seems to similiar to what Shuu used in his fight against Kenshiro in HnK.
But I can't tell what Remy is about and he feels to me like he has strange fashion for the sake of having strange fashion.
could have mentioned primal rage 🎩
there is also a busnesmen in the Jap/us copy of Marvel superhero V Streetfighter by the name of Nroamu who mimics Ryu megaman and antia ( from Darkstalkers ) he was a hidden Char and often teamed up with Dan or Omga Red...
This is the content i crave
Oh, it says that tea master character uses JūJutsu (Jiu-jitsu). That would be really cool to see.
Every rejected street fighter in each game should've been used as Final Fight-type CPU-controlled enemies for the sequels they were intended for.
You forgot about TERRY BOGARD WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDIED FOR STREET FIGHTER 1, but the developers left and took their material and founded SNK . TERRY IS A STREET FIGHTER CHARACTER.
Super Best Friends may no longer be a thing, but I'd love to see Tea Master gain the same prominence as Zubaz
@14:11 - Can't sneak a picture of MARVEL'S Mandrill by me.
