I remember watching this on TV when I was a nine year old lad in Manchester, although my family were all reds we were all routing for Villa and we were all jumping around the living room when Peter Withe scored! Villa had a great team back then and even knocked Liverpool of their throne for a short while!
Your support was mirrored and repayed by my household when you beat the same team for the CL and treble in 1999. I was 12 and my old man hoisted me doing laps around the livingroom coffee table. I'm a Villa fan and he - well I can't type that. I liked football and played all the time but on that day I realised I loved the game. Special moments!
Watching this still fills me with so much pride and absolute love for my club..watched it as a nine year old kid with me dad..I remember at full time the whole street was out celebrating and running around going mad..Happy days UTV
I was behind the goa ll agec18. Withe started that move and then finished it. This team worked so hard, Saunders had them drilled, they were very fit. Barton took over and wisely just kept it going. Great to see the good times returning.
RIP Gary Shaw. Apart from the goal, what stands out from that final is Jimmy Rimmer (they were more innocent days) going off with a sore neck after nine minutes and then Nigel Spink stopping everything Bayern fired at him.
Watching this on TV 1982 as a 14 years old Bayern Munich Fan. Remember my great disappointment after this unlucky lost final. Interesting fact: at this time 1982, it was the first "big" final (ECC, UEFA-Cup, National-Cup) in club history of Bayern, they were defeated.
I've never forgotten the dejection of that Bayern side sitting down on the pitch with that look on their faces after the final whistle. They were all on £10k per man to win that night !
In the Guardian today: "Shaw’s part in Villa’s European Cup-winning goal is immortalised on a banner that has been a fixture on the North Stand. The banner quoting Brian Moore’s commentary of Peter Withe’s match-winning goal against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam reads: “Shaw, [Gary] Williams, prepared to venture down the left. There’s a good ball played in for Tony Morley. Oh, it must be and it is! Peter Withe!”"
I saw that goal at the Feynoord Stadium. I was lucky enough to be there. A fantastic night. All Villa fans are sad about Gary Shaw. Not just a member of that team but a brummie lad. Condolences to his family, close friends, loved ones. Tomorrow Villa are at home to Wolves. I am sure/hope a tribute will be made to Gary Shaw. All the best from the "Holte-Enders in the Sky".
Wonderful. Watched this in a village pub in North Wales, were everyone to a man was rooting for 'Villa, regardless of football loyalty ~ Never to be repeated in this era of elitism.
Have a look at the movements off the ball the accurate passing and the fluency of the move. It leaves a lot of today's individuals for dead. A champion team instead of a team of champions
Really Glad Villa won that Night ! England 🇬🇧 🏴 were to play in the Spain World Cup Finals after being absent for 12 years. Morley and Withe being selected in the Squad by the way ! Villa winning the European Cup against Bayern Munich was a Good Morale Booster ! Fond Memories !
That was a lucky win for Aston Villa back then, but as the commentator said at the end, thats what is football about. One chance. Does not matter if the opponent had 20 before, if they are not clinical, they miss all, all you need is 1 and if you are clinical enough, you are leading by a goal. Fair play from Villa. Iam watching this because they are up against each other in the Champions League this wednesday, and at Villa Park. It is going to be a crazy atmosphere. Lets see which team comes out on top this time around. 30+ years passed, football have changed, everything changed. Lets see. Ohh btw. RIP Gary Shaw. A club legend for Villa.
How can a player be so unmarked in the box in a final? Jeeezz. That was the only real good combination that Villa had in that final. Sometimes that's all it takes.
Bayern didn't have the luck they had when they beat Leeds. Almost exactly the same. Two chances two goals. Leeds should have won by 4 or 5 easily. Then they lost to Villa, Man United and Chelsea being the better team by far. That's painful indeed. Even after 39 years one doesn't get it
They weren't the better team against united but I don't remember the other two games. I don't recall there being much in this game but it was a long time ago.
The showboated against United and did not kill the game off. Apparently Bobby Charlton sitting next to Franz Beckenbauer said that throughout the second half Beckenbauer kept saying we're going to lose.
Forgive my suspicions but Bayern weren't lucky v Leeds, who admittedly were filthy (e.g. Yorath)... but the "referee" allowed Beckenbauer to ref the game. It seems Bayern WERE lucky, both v Atletico (1974) and St. Etienne (1976), but I only saw the 1976 match, of that pair.
@@harryf1ashmanI beg to differ. In the end you take your chances or you don't. In all fairness the momentum can change in a heartbeat. I'm 62 years old and I can't bear to watch Bayern in a final because of their ability to throw it all away toward the end. My commiseration though on Luke Shaw dying way to young. I'm nearly 63 and that sucks. He was a likeable lad and surely will be sorely missed by his family, friends and the Villa faithful.
RIP Gary Shaw 😢

Thanks Chris, I was lucky to be there as a 12year old, glad you enjoyed it
@@villatrinity3518 You are welcome mate and glad to see you lot in the top division where you belong!
Heartwarming comment 👍

Happy days.
I was watching on a tele in a pub in Leicester - the only Villa fan in the pub.
I was running around like a lunatic at the final whistle.
GravityBoy72 what pub in Leicester do you remember...I bet it’s not there no more!! Leicester city fan here
After more than 40 years and with all the advances in the game and the tactics... this goal still looks amazing.
Tony Morley’s assist was first class.
We've even conquerd Europe in 1982
david flores the Villa boys from Aston we travel near and far you will hear us singing from the stands at Villa Park Allez allez allez
Damian Wayne the premier league
Now conquering bayern again in 2024❤
Here after the commentator talked about the goal in today's Villa vs Bayern UCL match
What a night.
Amazing the way Withe uses the post 😂
Gary Shaw has passed away. Should have been on England team for Espana 82.
Leeds fan here. Great Viila side . Did what we failed to do in 75.

I was in upper tier , a cherished memory forever, so sad with Gary Shaw passing away today 25/09/2024
Ricordo benissimo questa incredibile vittoria dei Villains. La vera Coppa dei Campioni!

It has now been moved to below the commentary area!
He did his best to miss it!

Let's hope Harry K trips over his boot-laces Wednesday night and AVFC again beat Bayern.

Brilliant goal,brilliant move,goosebumps energy 42 years on
The greatest goal ever scored
Thankfully it went in off that post!
It’s a really good goal. Stands up even to modern standards.
Modern Standards🤣🤣🤣

Peter Withe scored 17 goals in his one year for Portland Timbers. That single season record stood for over forty years.
That unmistakable sound of old European matches. When football was good.

What a superb goal!
Gary Shaw didn't get long at the top but he really made it count. The question of how he never got an England cap is made for an eye-roll moment.
He really did nearly miss that didn’t he 😀
I never knew the Villa had it in them, they always have a nice strip though!
James Thomson
What a baller Gary Shaw RIP 😢
Can’t believe we just beat Bayern again at Villa Park. UTV.
His mum was my dinner lady ❤❤
If Man City scored a goal like that with that level of move, the world would say Guardiola has evolved the game.
Was there unforgettable night wild
Tony Lloyd led him a merry dance there - great goal.

Turns out there was nothing lucky about it mate, seems villa still have Bayerns number 42 years later 😅
Proper football Rip Gary Shaw
Hanging on you say?
Love Withe but almost managed to mess up from three feet.
Var said they have been looking at it and it was off side.

I'm surprised Schumacher didnt take him out.
Would have been very difficult to do, seeing that Schumacher was playing for Koeln in those years. 🤣
Correct. That's visibly Paul Breitner in goal. 😊
2021 id coming 🗿
Nearly missed from 5 yards...
but didn't : )
Ha ha! it wiped its feet before going in...

used his shin to good purpose.
Not a vile fan but loved Peter withe when he played for us ..DH7 MAGS ..
Bayern missed so many chances that Withe was just a couple of inches to follow suit.
Great limbs from the Villa fans
Aston villa, spurs, arsenal, man city: 1 champions league tittle
Liverpool have a cool half dozen 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Great for English clubs at the time that they continued the winning streak of Liverpool and Forest but, let's be honest, they were lucky in the final.
My Grandads cousin hahaha
What a terrible goal to lose to 😅
Weird that RUclips recommended this to me after Villa beat Bayern again 42 years later.
