Once this engine has overheated for any reason, the head is warped, so the head gasket allows compression to leak into the coolant, blowing the coolant out of the radiator and into the overflow reservoir every time you drive it. Since the head gasket leak is introducing exhaust gas into the radiator, when the engine cools down, it won't pull the coolant back out of the overflow reservoir. If anybody ever thinks they have fixed one of these engines for overheating, but didn't have the head resurfaced and replace the head gasket, it ain't fixed. Good work. It was probably about time for the water pump and timing belt, anyway. Getting ready to do all this same stuff to my 98 Civic pretty soon. Head gasket started leaking on it after the engine overheated close to the red because the thermostat was stuck closed. I replaced the thermostat and thought it would be fixed. Surprise!
+Hoopsters that area is pulled from outside air, they get sucked up in the car while you are movie :( you would be surprised how many cars I've worked on that have never had the cabin filter serviced
I have a question I don't know if you will know what is it , but 2 things the first to the car start I have to take the ECU unplugged some minutes before I usually take it out on the day before , if I don't do the when the car starts seconds alter it dies and keep not wanting to start ,so I plug the ECU on and until the car gets about 30 to 40 minutes running it gets very strange if i get more than 2,000 rpm sound like a big misfires and i have to put it on 4th gear to run at 60 km per hour anyway so after the time passes i can rev it up with some sounds as a low misfires to almost 7,000 rpm , the car does not smokes nor loses oil or coolant ,I've cleaned the intake and the TBI cleaned the low rev sensor and so on , now two strange things is that were a bit of oil coming from the pcv valve and also from the hose that comes from the head cylinder gasket , so I've put the 2 hoses to the original air intake you near the headlamp ?and closed the 2 holes in the intake manifold and the iron hose that comes with the water hose as well , so no more oil coming in , but those problems were already long before the start problems , I know that I've typed a lot but do you know what my problem could be? I don't know if it's related but in may last year after I bought the car I took it to a Honda dealer and they've put 0w20 synthetic oil on it and I just got to know that 6 days later when in a high rev like 5,000 smoked a bit , then I put 20w50 oil as our Brazilian owners manual here in Brazil said to put it in 2000 when it was new ! since that day the car was fine but in December that problem appeared , I've changed the ignition coil and since than it's like what I told you , by the way mine is a d16y7 manual .and the ECU is yw Heihin do you have any opinion about it? I don't know if it helps but I'm sure hat this car was already taken the engine apart Probable due to heat problems because here in Brazil most of the people put just water in the radiator , since when I bought it I'm using Honda coolant . thanks
Thank you for trying to help me , and I just saw saw how many typos I had so I'm sorry about that , and yes it is very odd , I've changed the TBI and also the 2 sensor that it has , and also the coolant sensor that is on the head cylinder , and still the same happens , but the most odd it is that after about 30 to 40 minutes the car runs fine , is not like it's letting me down or anything , and no one here in my city seams to find the problem , now you maybe right , the 2 only things that I didn't changed yet are the ECU and the distributor , I had a feeling that it could be the Ignition Control Module because the car did not start for like 20 days and I forced a lot trying to make it start , but if it was that the car would not be ok after 30 to 40 minutes right? I have the video here on my youtube before the car started fine by itself but no one helped or no one had that problem , but I need to buy a distributor because you could be right , but no one helped or no one had that problem , anyway thank you .
Hi wow I didn't remember about my questions . Look it was the distributor. I've bought a used one and placed on the car and since that I never had that problem again . . Thanks for trying to help me as well . I want to make an appeal for everyone that uses face cloth mask to avoid contracting the covid virus . All that I see are masks leaking air from the sides of the nose and cheeks . It is easy to make one that doesn't do that leaking . All you need it is to make an oval conical mask with some sort of plastic or flexible iron or aluminum on the nose area . And the air will pass through the actual cloth of the mask .
@@tennesseerepairguy2162 I understand and agree. I guess my question is, as a temporary measure, would it cause any damage to the engine? hey I have a question I just replaced the hose on my my girlfriends 89 honda civic, but i noticed something was also busted its the first connection in the middle of them with almost a little slinode what is that and how do i fix it lol
Hi Tennessee Repair Guy...I have 98 civic LX and experiencing overheating as well. No visible leaks anywhere or any liquids on the ground. Coolant levels are fine except the over flow tank which is pretty low. Brand new radiator cap. Radiator fan works. Overheating only happens during idling but drops back to normal temp when driving. I know worse case is a head gasket leak or maybe water pump? Should my next step be change out the thermostat before the trying to repair the others? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
Yep change the thermostat if that doesn't work check around your valve cover and see if there is any leak spray soapy water and if it bubbles up means u have a head gasket problem if not then is the water pump but just letting you know in case keep some coolant and and heater core hose in your trunk in case of any freeway emergency u can do it in 10 mins
@@EastMenloPark1650 it turned out to be the thermostat. I should've changed that first and I would've been okay. Instead I changed the fan switch first and drove and it made my car worse. I should've listened to others who said it's more than likely the thermostat.

My 2000 civic started overheating and I replaced the radiator cap but I noticed coolant all over coming from the coolant resivoir (the hose was off ) but I put it back and put a clamp on it and still throwing coolant out from the resivoir top can you help me?
I would not recommend it, your car can run without one, the only reason I said to run it at idle not driving with the cap off is because it sounds like there is an air bubble in the system
Why didn't you just rented a Block Tester to look for combustion gases inside the coolant system ??? It would've taken under 5 minutes. Instead of doing all that extra work. Makes more sense to me and way easier
My 2012 Honda Civic keeps overheating. No leak in the hose or radiator. The thermostat is fine. The fans come on for the radiator. I'm lost..... Any suggestions
Kristina Byrd check fluid level or fluid quality you can do that by buying a tester at any auto parts store and follow directions on the package, could be you water pump if nothing else
Did you recently loose coolant some where? Could be an option maybe an air bubble in the system, I know you said the thermostat was working did you test it? Or have you checked the hoses after the fan comes on it typically cycles the water.
@@tennesseerepairguy2162 We tested the thermostat and checked the water cycle which works fine from a idling position. The car has been getting so heated that the fluids are steaming out. what if you turned the car off before it went close to red like at about3/4ths?
so if my radiator coolant goes into the overflow and never comes back after it cooled down means its a headgasket?
