    What a difference, that's a lot of edc . I personally put a 17° edge on a few different knives with different steels and I just keep rolling the edge at about 30 percent of the steels cutting ability with a 20° edge. Iam a Carpenter by trade , and usually cut stuff like plastic , wood, thick cardboard , plastic ties , insulation , ect. So , I just keep a polished
    20° edge and its fine , no rolls , no problems , so I understand ZT's thinking with its thicker edges . That said , yours was definitely the thickest edge that I've seen on a ZT. Just my 2 cents .....

    Thanks for doing this. I had somewhat given up on ZT after their lackluster cutting performance. I´m glad that their CPM 20CV knives perform on par with other manufacturers. My only ZT is a 0562CF (in 20CV,) so this bodes well.

    you can request a deep carry clip from Kai.USA (from the ZT560, which shares the same screw pattern) which they will happily send you free of charge (I have done this for both my ZT 0456 and 0470), also while you are at it request more screws to fill up the empty screw holes (again I have done this for all of my ZT's that I own), and again they will send them to you free.
    I have to say I really like the ZT0470 and appreciate the fact ZT is going down this path of more EDC'able sized knives.

    I have an 0562cf that held up to spine whacks fine, until app. 2 months after carry. It seems like there is enough slack in the lock up to allow a bounce of the tang on the insert. Hopefully your zt holds up fine. Thanks for the video Pete!

    Just got my 0470 and went to loosen the pivot for disassembly. And boom the D shape "stationary pivot" rounded out due to the tons of loctite on the pivot. Now I have to spend my money to send it out to ZT for god knows how long just to be able to disassemble my $240 knife. This should not be the case and I'm sure that there going to try and charge me for whatever part they have to replace. It's honestly ridiculous. I love this knife it's so smooth and looks amazing got a MXG deep carry pocket clip and it's perfect except for the fact that I CANT EVEN TIGHTEN/LOOSEN THE PIVOT. I really know understand why ZT wouldn't just put an octagonal shape instead of a D and they put the grove in the CF from what I heard so I really hope they don't try and charge me for a whole new inlay. Fingers crossed they take care of me.

      Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors Will do I'm sending it out tomorrow. They claim the turn around time is about 4 weeks but I saw a video from EDC gear reviews where he sent his out and didn't get it back for 4 months. They claimed it was because they have had more knives come back than ever which isn't a good sign. But fingers crossed they don't take forever and try to charge me for something that's clearly on them. Glad yours is in tip top shape.

    I think you've got it wrong. A narrower angle is known to be LESS durable; easier to bend over or chip. I think what really happened here is that the factory edge was quite coarse and toothy. You broke off all the factory "teeth" rather quickly. (whereas Spyderco's factory edge was probably finer, so it lasted longer)
    Then, you re-sharpened it and put a VERY fine edge on it, with the strop. Much smaller teeth on the edge. So despite having a narrower bevel, it cut longer.
    The thing to do now is to put a wider angle micro-bevel on it, but with a super fine finish, like you did here. That edge should last even longer. You've already put in the work to have a narrower angle main bevel. Now just put the proper micro bevel on it and it will just take a few swipes to re-sharpen.
    What do you think?
    Side note: consider buying The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening. It's a simple book written by a good ol' American hillbilly. To demonstrate his method, he had his daughters sharpen up a double-bit axe and he then shaved his beard with it. With the knowledge that's in this book, folks probably wouldn't keep buying sharpeners.

      Or heat treatment issue, like with the infamous m390 modus

    • @dooshlerd
      @dooshlerd 5 лет назад +2

      Supersteel Steve has videos showing that it takes at least 3 sharpenings to fully remove the "burnt" steel. Some knives are more stubborn and can take as many as 5 or even 7.
      ZT also usually runs their knives a tiny bit softer. I guess they just don't want to use multiple heat treat protocols for the same steel on different models.

    • @JacksonKnives
      @JacksonKnives 5 лет назад

      Is it it possible? Sure. But Pete's geometry explanation covers this scenario perfectly. Every time someone tries a more acute (within reason) edge on a retention test like this, the acute angle wins.

    • @don0giorgio
      @don0giorgio 5 лет назад

      @@JacksonKnives man, watch his vids m390 unleashed, this steel can produce much higher performance in number of cuts. Something is wrong with this particular blade

    • @JacksonKnives
      @JacksonKnives 5 лет назад +1

      @@don0giorgio The previous 20CV test, Benchmade Grip, got 351 cuts @ 20DPS. This is 375 at 17DPS. In M390, Lionsteel TRE did 334 @ 20 DPS. Tests with the Steel Will polished go higher @ 20DPS, then double at 11.5 DPS on the Tormek.
      So... more acute, cuts longer. Is there room for variability in heat treat, burnt edges and Pete's cutting technique? Definitely! But if you look at the CATRA data Larrin published on knifesteelnerds, the relationship between edge angle and slicing performance is very clear.
      Pete's explanation is simple, concurrent with what other testers are saying, and borne out by all the data. If Pete wants to take this back to whatever the factory angle is (25 with some convex?) there's a better than amazing probability that the cutting performance would drop again. If he does that and calls out the burnt edge controversy, I'll send him a box of knives in gratitude.

    It seems to me that all these factory edges are “burnt” a little. When they put the grinder on there to put the factory edge on, it heats up the very surface of the edge, and the apex, and ruins the heat treat, just on the surface, or “burns” the edge. Sharpening with stones will take off that burnt steel, and get down to the fresh steel underneath, and your performance will increase a lot. And then thinning it out seems to help you out as well.
    I wish ZT designs like that were thinner behind the edge... good video brother, God bless

    • @Wolf_K

    • @JacksonKnives

      That's one way to look at it, but this result is consistent with other similar tests. Acute edges always out-cut obtuse edges, so pick the most acute edge/thinnest blade that's practical for the application. Larrin Thomas has some great analysis on knifesteelnerds.com.
      If Pete wants to re-sharpen this edge to the factory angle, we may get a more conclusive answer, but I don't think he's going to do it. XD
