Jared is right. The complete name is "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," a German town. The saga is that a guy was hired to exterminate all the rats in the city. He did it by playing a charming song that leads all the rats out of the city. Once he wanted to collect his money, the city refused. So, he did what any reasonable man would do. He used his charming song to lead all the citys children out of the town (leaving open what he did to them ;) ). It is more likely that the origin of this story is that someone recruited a lot of children from a town for the child crusade. Once they all left to fight a "holy" war, people had to make sense of what happened to their children. Needless to say, the children's crusade when nowhere.
Even today people call populist that try to gain momentum by playing to peoples fears and prejudices a "rat catcher", not so much because the people are rats but because they play a charming song and want people to follow it blindly.
The ratmageddon ending for the company seemed planned
