Art Studio Refresh for Self-care - How I organise & declutter my space

- For a couple of days this week I have been busy refreshing my space for self-care. Just getting more organised, decluttering and making my happy place even happier! Just the simple act of tidying up a space, and I mean any space not just a creative one can be life-changing can't it? My studio now has a new set-up and I have re-organised my art supplies too making sure everything is more ergonomic and within easy reach. The art trolley got a sort out too. I have already experienced the benefits with a re-newed energy and am more inspired to paint in there. I truly feel, I am really settling in now. James has had some really good ideas too for revamping the space, so I will share those too. And, over the next few weeks he will be putting those in place for me. Lucky me! They are small things but will really make a difference which is often the way isn't it? I hope you are inspired to do a little tidying up somewhere in your spaces, whether a small drawer, a corner of a room or surface of a table. Here's to happy places! Yes, my art room of course! I got tickled when I saw the Jack Daniel's sign. I don't drink whisky but I am from middle Tennessee, not far from the distillery. My father took us there when I was a child (too young to drink ; )

Dearest Wendy, So Happy in Viewing Your Discoveries as Resetting Your Creative Space. I too find great joy as "bits & bobs" find their "happy places" I've learned in periodically "loft-ting" of sorts, I can appoint space more effectively Example, turning box on its side offers you level space at two heights surface - I've created thin shelves within box & I place my pallet trays or papers each on their own little shelf-even cafe tray of pencils etc Then on top of box(it's made of wood), I can display easel, stack of journals/current reference matetials/books (similar to items on your table in oval office) Knowing how creative you & James are, I bet you'll take this idea to greater possibilities. I love decluttering and reorganising things, then donating to charity/recycling. It really helps to soothe my anxiety. It also just makes life so much easier, I caught the bug about eight years ago and never looked back. I'm always trying to convert people to declutter. We have been so long without rain! I am praying for a good old thunderstorm. I had to hand water my front yard yesterday. It took almost three hours, everything is parched!

oh yes all ways rearranging my tiny space to get it to a place that works best for me , it is so important to have a inspiring place to paint . That was a lovely relaxing video as per usual from you. I just had a declutter and sort out of my workroom/office too and I love to do it now and then to make me excited again about my space. You are right too, I find watching declutter vids encourage me to have a good sort out ☮️🐓

Hi Wendy, you seem so much lighter and brighter, it’s lovely to see you that way. I must be the only person who is a maximalist, as opposed to a minimalist. I like my stuff around me, it inspires me. And I am always surrounded by the books I’m reading... terrible really. But that represents home and security and my happy place. Love to see others tidying. It doesn’t bother me! Finding my best place has always been hard, but it appears that for now it’s the kitchen next to the radiator! And it’s the end of May!!
I have a chest infection! How? I’ve shielded and have just been out and about wearing a mask. I’m vaccinated for Covid but I bet I have lost immunity to other things. Sigh!

Hi Wendy loved your art studio tour and declutter very organised now for you and I also enjoy collecting empty jars just because lol. I also love my paint brush holder which is an old antique flower vase holder and the brushes look great in the crystal. I think they call them frog vase holders. Hi Wendy your work is beautiful.
Wendy dealing with art materials in all of their different shapes and sizes is a tricky thing,after you cleared your wet area you could see that you had too many items that were infringing upon your valueable work space,the trolley idea is good but I can see that you really need two trollies ! To repair your old canvas simply stick canvas patches onto the damage from the rear with some artists medium,if you can find someone with a bandsaw or table saw simply cut that frame down so you can fold the old canvas over it and re-stretch onto the carrier.I do think that your de-cluttering is working and you will reach an happy working space given a few adjustments here and there ,well done !
I totally relate to your overwhelm. Mixed media means you have a variety of materials of every shape --- because your art that's coming through you is calling the shots. It's not like your craft is knitting and everything has a place or your craft is sewing. Mixed media is a whole different species of art. so inspired by your calm! Lovely video.

It has been a weird weather here in Germany too. Rain and thunderstorms, huge clouds paired with sunshine and alternating every 5 minutes or so, lol. I guess it is just one of those months this year..... but you know, we had weather like this when I was a little girl as well. I found an old newspaper from 1971 in my attic and read the weather report on it. It was June and had been raining the whole month...... hopefully our June in 2021 will be nice, warm and sunshiny. :-)

As an artist my environment is either going to aggravate me or inspire me. Finding a home for the things I use to create with is vital. There is nothing worse than having inspiration hit and then the "big search" for some item that would be perfect and I know I have it but where did I put it last?...the aggravation is real, lol. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers! I spent an hour last night tidying up my craft room table, now for the rest of the room. I'm redoing a childhood scrapbook that was falling apart, adding little bits and bobs to give it that 60's and 70's era look, that I'm from....okay yeah I'm in my late 50's but still young!

I love having an organised workspace! When my area is overcrowded it makes me reluctant to create, so I have to clear the decks. It energises the space too xx
I find it so difficult to keep my studio tidy! I've just had a big sort-out (not exactly a declutter!) and it looks so much better in here now. We'll see how long it lasts though!

i'm always tweaking my space, it seems. i find 'corralling' things in trays and boxes help keep everything within reach but doesn't look like an overwhelming mess. i just moved ALL my stuff from my folks basement to my new-ish old house and wow, talk about overwhelm! luckily i have a basement to get things out of sight, out of mind in the meantime. artist studios are so interesting! have a good weekend, Wendy :-)

I am not a painter or drawer at all, but I like making thinks by hand.. Finished a crochet piece just today.. You've inspired me to keep doing little little everyday.. Even if not a lot at once.. 😊

I always find that within a solid structure it takes time as something fluid (us humans😁) to find my balance in a space but because we are moveable we have to find where we fit in and we know when it’s right because we feel comfortable and energised ❤️❤️

Thanks for sharing your decluttering. Really brilliant. It gives me some new ideas and I am more motivated to do the same with my space. Tiny suggestion. Please consider moving the aromatherapy over abit and not so close to the plants. It may be too strong for them. (Just my opinion).

If the sun through your windows is making your studio too hot, may I suggest solar reflective film that you can do yourself. I live in the South of the US, and it really helps a lot on my south and western-facing windows. You can get it in gradations of filtering the light, and you can still see the trees and the sky just fine from the inside. From the outside, the reflective properties give extra privacy, you can hardly see inside at all. It is also removable and doesn't damage the glass at all if someone wants to remove it. It comes in rolls and is very affordable. Maybe you'd have to get permission to do it, but I think anybody using that studio would appreciate having the heat from the sun cut down a bit. Even if you just do one window or part of a window, it helps.

May I ask what your diet looks like for physical well being? Or do you have a video on that already? And yes I love to declutter, just did that on Sunday! Us artists need that clean but messy space.

My painting studio is not organized. I have one bookshelf that’s full, I have an old fashioned desk that you pull down the writing space down it’s lovely but I like seeing everything. I might have to get something to store everything maybe clear bins

Maybe you could get one of those wire baskets to act as a shelf/drawer on your trolley. That could fix quite easily with drawer rollers or simple hooks. You know the kind I'm thinking of? You get them in built-in wardrobes? Anyway, just a thought. I love the display of your paintings. They're looking beautiful. Question: Do you find being faced with a lot of your own art all the time (including the mistakes you see within them) to be inspiring or off-putting? I find sometimes I look at the artwork I've already done and it makes me tired to start a new piece - because I remember all the time and effort that went in to creating them. Or that I'll not manage to create anything as good again. Does that make sense? - fellow rambler xxx
I usually don't mind it at all and like to 'talk' to them! xxxx I do understand what you mean though, perhaps scan or photograph your work, print out a few times and work on the copies!! xxx
