I immediately noticed the lack of sound coming from the rear when you had heavy hits. I would love to see you take this on more challenging trails!
These are the level of trails that 9 out of 10 of us ride 😂. I couldn’t see myself on a more challenging trail than this.
In chimes the DH gallery
More Challenging??? I was soiling me drawers for most of the video.
I think gearbox makes tons of sense if they can be done light enough! Kind of hope that's the case and it catches on :)
Agreed, then they will definitely have broader appeal. Though they aren't thaaat much heavier now!
This was a ton of fun, thanks again Alex! Learn more about the AC1 here: bit.ly/ArchibaldDaleStone ...should I get one? 👀
Thanks for checking it out! Once you're ready we will set you up with one!
DO it!
Yes.
Once you're only intending to use it for winch and plummet type riding, then sure, would be great for that and it's definitely very quiet and we know you don't like noisy hubs, so. Also overall, interesting bike, but 39lbs is a bit much to me, even if it's really designed for the DHs. Curious what you thought of the Hope brakes?
I mean, it would be a shame not to at this point. Go ahead and splurge, Alex will be more than happy to set you up 😂
How much innovation can we put on one bike? Archibald: Yes. 😁
🧠📈
Zerode has been doing it for years and better
A simple look at their geo chart would tell you that isn't true
High pivot bikes are so 1998. The idler wheel gets past the chain stretch but a properly designed 4 bar link with horst link never fails. And the fact the brake is attached to the swing arm gives brake jack....if you want an idea of how to fix this look how Foes did it on the Fly (2003-2010). I had 2 and it is the only way to have a uni rear end and a 4 bar link for the brake.
@@TheNoseman1 one by drivetrains are so 1898, by that logic.
Thanks for not playing music over the wonderful sounds of the tires & suspension working hard over the beautiful terrain.
I love this sort of bike, if I were speccing one for myself I'd want as-silent-as-possible rear hub. I know lots of people like the sound of a good freewheel, but given that you've engineered out all of the other noises at this point, I'd love to JUST be hearing the tyres!
Agreed!
This seems like a bike nerd's dream. So many new concepts/stuff
I'm not that big of a nerd, and i wish i could try it out
That's a cool looking bike and sounds like it rides great. Would love to see more of it.
You can see the bike accelerate out of turns and through chunk even through the footage which is an ode to how well that high pivot works specifically I feel.
Especially given that it has a build of parts I'm not at all familiar with haha.
Yeah! Only a small part into the video it’s really clear Dale is the kind of content creator I’ve been missing testing out bikes.. a good “soft fact” kind of review, with enough tech talk to give some perspective.. but talking experience live from going on a ride like this, rather than setting up scenarios to compare etc, is a super relevant I think💯
Thanks, great content!
Bike seems siccck aswell, glad to have found out about them🤝
Would like to see more of the AC1
Great video! The bike looks very interesting. Your trails there look amazing, and your riding is stellar. Also, whatever you're doing to record sound on the bike... keep it up. That is top notch audio.
LOL I was so distracted by the hub sound LOL. Very cool to watch you on a different bike.
I definitely prefer the silent bliss of rubber on dirt.
I've been riding internal gearhub bike since 2018 and it's absolutely amazing. Mine is in the wheel (Rohloff hub) so it comes with extra drawbacks, but even with these drawbacks there's no going to back to deaurailler for me. This bike looks SICK.
Never tried a Rohloff myself, would be keen to experience one someday!
Thought I’d separately comment from the chain I started earlier. It seems to me that gearbox shifting is the future for MTB. The tech seems not quite there yet to enable widespread adoption, but I bet the current trade-offs (no downshifting while pedalling and fewer gears for less granularity) will be overcome in time. The weight penalty may not be a penalty at all since the weight is off the back wheel triangle. It reminds me of the transition from rim brakes to disc brakes in the 90’s.
As soon as someone solves shifting under load, I'd take the weight penalty for the low maintenance and active suspension any day. More thought required until then!
@@DaleStoneinb4 a bike version of ignition cut on shifts. All I know is that probably the best way to do it would be without adding more moving parts (i.e. some kind of clutch system)
@@WilliamLevesqueineX if you add a clutch you also add maintenance, also if the clutch means the cranks spin freely it will prevent you from cranking; you're putting your strength onto the drivetrain, shift and there's no resistance all out of a sudden, your balance will go all outta whack, if you're on the street you can probably prevent the fall just fine, on the trails you'll most likely hit a rock with your head on the fall
@@DaleStonedsg from Cars it's not full load but faster change
Love how quiet it is + no more broken derailleurs. Gearboxes seem like the future.
Yea until you break a gearbox 20 miles from a trail head. Goodluck 👍
...or an exposed, impact prone derailleur? 🤔
@DaleStone ummmm take the derailleur off and single speed it home? ...or learn how to ride better so you never hit your derailleur 🤌
@@johnnyweekend I think the chances of breaking a derailleur are quite a bit higher. But yeah gearboxes suck in your imaginary scenario.
@Gt5rocks78 wow, are you saying a gearbox would never break and it's just my imagination?
For sure want to see more rides on that bike !
Also got hyped for it's release! Fingers crossed it will have international shipping 🤞
I ride a similar frame made by peregrine bikes here in California; steel, high pivot, pinion gear box, long travel, steep seat tube. It’s been a really great gravity leaning do everything bike, love it!
Never heard of them before, very cool. Love the crazy single swingarm look too! 🔥
That trail looks fun as hell!
You were flying through some of those rough sections. It was like the way I drive a rental car through a pot holed street.
😂
pretty soothing to watch you fly through the forest
It's so quiet, all you can hear is the tires! Love it!
I love how much you love it. It will take some more years, but I am eagerly waiting for a point in time when gearboxes will become a common choice.
With more early adopters, hopefully the technology will progress to the point where it is an easy decision for the end consumer.
I put my email in for notifications on the bike. Can't wait to check one out myself!
I used to ride a Balfa BB7 back in the day and ended up riding a Canfield Jedi until recently. The high-pivot is amazing and this bike seems to be executed very well. I love the silence.
Yep, you definitely get it with that bike history!
This seems like a great and fun bike for us viewers to enjoy thigh fpv. It's SO quiet! And you can feel the confidence it gives exuding from the bike. Also fun getting to see what a gearbox can (and cannot) do.. GO FOR IT (I know I would, couldn't help myself if I had the option)..
Same, i'm probably just gonna implode if my 2009 Demo 8 frame cracks out of fatigue, wich will eventually happen
Looks INSANE, would love to try something like that…
The engineering of the rear triangle and bottom bracket / hardware box appears extremely well thought out and elegant.
It has a really cool industrial design!
So cool! I would love to try that rig!
really can't wait for this bike to be released and would love to see more of this bike
so cool to see high-pivot being applied to the lower side of the chain-line too. between that, the internal gearbox and those trails ... this is pure porn :)
The lower side is just a chain tensioner to accommodate chain growth, the upper side does most of the magic haha. Agreed!
@@DaleStone yeah but that lower side also avoids chain-slap and gives heeeeeeaps of clearance 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Magic all round, I reckon :)
Would love to ride that trail! Looks amazing.
I swear I can hear how smooth this bike is. Looks awesome!
That's the same thing I noticed. Gotta love a solid sounding bike🤘🏻
I just bought an effigear bike, haven't got to ride it though, it's awesome hearing how much fun you had with it
Idk what's more impressive that bike or the park. Wowza
This bike looks awesome. 👍🏻
Exciting the future of Mountain Bikes is.
Just got done taking my pinion gate setup for a spin and I see this video now I got to get a full suspension instead of just a hardtail with it😂👍🏼
A good place to start is older bikes, you can get fairly good kit for mid-end prices or less, just make sure whatever you're buyng isn't wrecked, suspension can look perfect and be a mess inside, wich will be both expensive and a pain in the ass
Woohoo seems like a great one!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
I cringed, and said "hoooyahhh" when you went through that fast section with the rock drop. Good god my palms are sweaty from my chair. Sick ride, will cop on craigslist in 15.
🤘🏾 now THAT was badass. I want one! 🎸
Just had to comment again. Gear boxes are without a doubt the “next big thing”. Like my Levo, weight is exactly where you want it. Significantly less maintenance on drive train with very little to change to get used to. Having no derailleur to deal with is probably the biggest plus. And Canadian designed and made… I have to have one.
There are definitely pros and cons to gearboxes, but they unquestionably deserve a bigger market share than they currently have. Love the made in Canada aspect too! 🇨🇦
I'm 100% on board with no (esp rear) derailleur!
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
That seems to be a really cool bike!
Wow , a video of rocks going by . Can't wait for the next one.
Me neither! 😃
@@DaleStone maybe next time we will get some info.
Agreed, next time it might be released haha.
omg this is my dream bike, gearbox, coil marzocchi suspension and everything
I remember seeing a drive like this back in the late 70's.
I can feel how smooth this bike runs just from the video
Steel is real, even on full sus. I was skeptical myself until I rode a steel full sus. They are also just as expensive as carbon.
Sweet bike so quiet, and smooth
Looks like it saves ur legs for power pedaling instead of shock absorbers. I love it
I'd love to try one, but I ride a lot of uphill stuff so having a gearbox + high pivot is just not going to work(props for having a chain instead of belt though). This bike is intended for going mainly down and by the looks of it, it does that pretty well.
Personally I am very interested in gearboxes, but I still believe it will be at least 5-10 more years before we see a drop in weight, as well as a drop in drag. My main issue is the drag compared to a regular drivetrain, and the weight is only number 2.
The weight was more noticeable than the drag for me, but you are right that it is very application specific.
Awesome bike and trail
Wow this is a dream bike nice video buddy 🤜💥🤛
Really interesting product, I was always jealous of people who could ride trails like this, I don’t think I’ll ever be capable of doing that but the bike seems to perform very well and from a technical aspect It seems like it could be more natural feeling to the rider the way this bike hinges
You'd be surprised how far a little confidence will take you if you're already a decent bike rider. Obviously don't take unnecessary risks and start slow but much of this isn't as crazy as it may appear on video. It's critical to have a bike you can trust though.
loved it! I'm a fan of steel. I imagine I won't be able to afford one, but looks great!
Time will tell, but it will be in line with offerings from bigger OEMs I'm told. 🙂
I immediately noticed just how good the rider is he was smoking down that trail
Cool with the different type of content; ie. bike testing.
that bike actually looks sick!
Absolutely is! 🔥
I LOVE THESE DOWNHILLING VIDEOS ANYWAY; GLAD FOR YOU THAT THIS BIKE WILL DO IT ALL...UP...AND OVER! COOL!
❤ IT!!! 😊
Yes please take more looks into gearbox bikes! Dale, can you notice a difference jumping with a high pivot bike? I've found that jumping on a bike with really linear suspension feels a bit weird and sluggish.
High pivot bikes definitely tend to trend towards descending capability, which makes them want to stick to the ground for grip. Definitely still hopable though!
More please!!
That trail is so pretty
Okay, that bike looks cool
The fact we can understand you talking while riding says a lot by itself.
This thing with a linkage fork + an Onyx rear hub would be an absolute tradition breaker / game changer.
Wouldn't be able to leave the parking long with all of the questions!
@@DaleStone I've been looking for something just like that as my daily driver, not even kidding one bit. A fully with minimal maintenance, can you imagine?
🤤
Really really cool arrangement!
I wanted to make something like this, but not as suffocated like this :).
I'm really itching to making it, new front middle & rear light weight suspension bike, simple to make, cheap small & strong :)!
Good luck! 🙂
Send it over to germany, i'll ride and review it on black forest enduro trails!
Oh lawd Iv'e said it once and Iv'e said it twice! Gear Boxes are def. the future, makes no sense to have that ancient technology rear mech on bikes that you descend mountains on.
Probably will take a long while until it's in high production from the BIG BiKE CoRpPS, but still
They certainly aren't a no-brainer for everyone yet, but for the right customer they're pretty fantastic!
This thing looks awesome! I love the mushed up combination of everything, if I lived somewhere with dh and had the budget I’d totally pick this over some mildly updated mainstream option. As an XC racer I’m super curious why you mentioned gearbox not being good for straight up sprinting? Besides the weight penalty and extra drag, are there any disadvantages to it?
It doesn't love shifting into a harder gear under load (tough it will do it), but it straight up won't downshift without zero cadence. Not great for downhills into uphills that require power to clean!
Man that thing is SILENT on Pingu
Instead of AC1, I think this needs to be called the “Ackchyually”. It’s perfection.
Thats really cool
Bike just sounds solid👍🏻
Yes!
One day we will see that style of gearbox with a motor inside too.
Looks like the sweet bike! I love how steel rides
Fairly certain that already exists!
@Dale Stone ha, well I'm behind the times!
Pinion MGU just launched a couple days ago!!!
@@MikeesTexas I saw, it looks rad!
Need to see this rear end coupled with the WTF front end...
That's jsut beautiful!
Holy COW that this is SILENT.
Oh ya!
Nice concept, looks awesome, but that upper sprocket needs a small cover over it for safety reasons, I could see that being an issue with somebody at some point.
No issues in testing this far.
Tell the guy to consider a belt drive.
It would get rid of the extra pullys and increase drive reliability even more, its a no brainer on a pinion.
I'd be keen to try one!
i think this is the future for downhill, maybe not cross country unless it becomes as efficient as a derailleur.
I agree, it works well with actual mountains.
Seems like a cool bike, would there be more maintenance required for a gearbox vs a derailleur?
Significantly less actually! Something silly like an oil change every 5000km. 😵💫
Wow. 10/10 im sold
Very cool. Great to see in action. I've signed up to get updates, but love know more specs as ridden if you've got them and are allowed to share (ex. components/travel, gearing, weight, etc.) and if not known or able, what existing bike that you've ridden would you feel it was most comparable to (recognizing it's obviously unique and know it will change as gets to commercialization.) Certainly also curious what price point they're targeting or be comparable range wise to, but recognize that will likely come with the commercialization and email updates.
The components on this bike were purely for test purposes and as I understand it are not representative of production. Standard Effigear Mimic gearbox, 172mm of rear travel, 170mm up front (coil too), probably 37-38lb all in which is +/- 1 from my primary setup.
@@DaleStone Cool thanks. Yeah figured would change, but was just interesting to know as POV'ed what it was rockin. :)
@@ianr1863 lots of interesting stuff for sure. Tairin hubs, Hope brakes and Marzocchi suspension and Specialized tires to name a few!
@@DaleStone 37-38Lbs is quite good for a steel fully with a heavy ass gearbox on board. I wonder how Archibald is going to navigate production, assembly and all that.
Quite good for sure Brad, with alu and coil fork spec! 🤯 Will be very interesting to see.
Check out the range of Pinion gear boxes. Maintenance, change oil once a year or at 10,000 miles. Belt driven which is way stronger than a bike chain and guaranteed for 10,000 miles!
Chain is often enough! Definitely worth weighing the pros and cons between Pinion and Effigear as a buyer.
I agree, it is insane
I am impressed, I have liked the idea gear boxes, and this bike has really sold me, mainly because all gear box bikes I have seen all run the worst idea for a shifter the grip shifts, things I thought died in the 90's. Archibald running regular shifters really is the things that gets me wanting this bike I have been sold on gear boxes for several years and your review just confirms opinions of them. I do have to ask was there a lot of friction in the gear box? Or was it hardly noticeable?.
It is super convenient that Effigear offers both. For the most part I didn't notice much drag just pedalling up the road, but it was noticeable when sprinting up tech sections. Once it's worn in it should reduce too.
@@DaleStone thanks Dale it a big help I really do think it is going to be my next bike, I think you are right once it is worn in it will have less friction.
Reeb down in Colorado is also testing some gearbox bikes on steel frames. I was actually skeptical of steel full sus bikes until I demoed a Steezl and was actually impressed, smoothest riding bike I've ever ridden and best cornering too (and not a high pivot, just a well executed horst link). Coil is absolutely the way to go on a steel frame, just gives it a very smooth, damped feel, like an ebike but with 15lbs less weight. Isn't the "green bike" a high pivot (i.e. Norco Range)?
The green bike is not, but the red and black bikes are!
Sick bike and even sicker trails!
It is beautiful ❤
As a non mountain biker, I can say that I saw many places where a ride like that could easily go wrong. Great bike though.
As another non mountain bike rider and new to watching rides on these kinds of trails I'd say the whole frigging course is where something could go wrong. I'm amazed how little safety gear you people wear. You all got some steady nerves!
@@markh3055 Yup. Makes me nervous just watching. One slip and it could be a very bad day. I wonder how long it takes to learn a course.
@@interestedinstuff1499 All I know, at my best I would have had too many injuries well before ever memorizing something like those! lol
Such a cool bike,.
Not been that impressed by a new bike in a long time
i just can t wait 10 years to see the bikes of the future also having carburators and periodical gearbox oil change . YEEESS!!
Then they aren't mountain bikes!
wow!
Bike looks like it rides super cush on video, and fast!
I thought all gearboxes were grip shift! Time to start shopping for one.
Thank goodness they aren't haha
Awesome video. Few questions , how is the shifting ?
Is it wireless ? Also where is the shifter ? The ones I had seen you need to rotate the handle for shifting.
That's the Pinion gripshift, I was using an Effigear gearbox which uses a standard trigger shifter. The shifting feels like you'd expect then, just that you aren't pedalling haha.
Do it, Do it, Do it... I love my Zerode sooooo much. I've had it for two years, abused it daily at whistler for 4 months. After all of that the only work I've done is changing pads, rotors and tyres. The gear box gets way smoother after the wear in period. The only thing I have against my bike is that I never get excited about new tech. I feel like worn out drivetrains were literally the only thing making me want a new bike each season.
Also when I ride my buddies bike's I have constant anxiety that I'm going to snap a chain while shifting. Unlike the belt on the Zerode.
The Zerode definitely looks pretty sweet, though from what I remember the production geo numbers aren't quite as modern as my current bike. Next gen will be extremely interesting from them!
