Herr, unser Herrscher, dessen Ruhm
in allen Landen herrlich ist!
Zeig uns durch deine Passion,
daß du, der wahre Gottessohn,
zu aller Zeit,
auch in der größten Niedrigkeit,
verherrlicht worden bist!

Chiyuki Urano, bass
Masaaki Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan
A landmark of perfection combining German genius and Japanese thoughtfulness
Superb performance. I think Suzuki's interpretation of the St. John Passion is the best of all available ones. It is warm, intense, dry (without vibrato, with clean attacks) very flowing, with moments of sparkling brilliance and great emotional feeling.
don't need to be a religious person to appreciate this. I'm atheist and this piece is magnificent :)
Just like you do not need to be a protestant to deplore the sufferings and massacres of the Huguenots… God has as much say in the creation of Bach's music as he had in all the suffering, torture and murder done in his name: none at all.
@@sorim1967 except that He CREATED Bach!
@@agapanthus1953 nope, I’m afraid you can’t spout nonsense like that as if it were fact.
There are no words to describe this music of unimaginable, unearthly, beauty and this magnificent performance. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, this music shows the immense accomplishments that the human spirit- the spirit of the universe itself - is capable of.
This music shows what human brains are capable of, bach just had a very creative mind and also a very good left part of the brain, the music is what happens in the middle of the brain...
Suzuki has Christian parents and played the organ during church services. So he is well acquainted with the christian and divine music of Bach.
Thanks for that tidbit of info! :)

Lord, thou our master, whose repute
In every land majestic is!
Show us through this thy passion
That thou, the very Son of God,
In every age,
E'en in the midst of deepest woe, (despair)
Art magnified become!b
The best interpretation of all...!!! Wonderful dynamics, correct-ideal tempo, amazing conductor, choir, everyone was felt it so so much!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the glory of God!
je suis du même avis !
Beautiful recording , the clearest of all that i have heard.
There are no words which can describe the magnificence, omnipotence and elevation of this musique. Unbelievable and unparallel beauty, mercy and grace. Thank you, Maestro Bach! And thank you Maestro Suzuki for the perfect performance!
THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
(To Suzuki, the orchestra, the choir, the soloists, the cameramen, the uploader, and pretty much everyone that was in some way involved in that video finally reaching my screen!)
Maravilloso¡
... God is definitely in the works of Bach. I didn't know him personally.. but he even said this was all to His glory. I can't think of a better inspiration that exists BUT God. If only Bach were still alive to write more....
If only. :'(
Flawless, powerful and absolotuley glorious buildup of flame and faith. Oh God! This is such a serious and vocally heartwarming performance!
I have to keep watching this over and over....it moves me deeply to see Japanese singing about Jesus...the ONE who died for them too.
Bravo Maestro Suzuki !!!
J'adore me réveiller en écoutant cette version!Superbe et apaisante
The conductor has given this grown-pedestrian piece a new accent. Me gusta mucho! This performance is so mind expanding for me.
Quelle élégance et quelle grâce cette direction!Superbe!
beautiful , all works of Masaaki Suzuki are beautiful, full of passion , Soli deo Gloria ;)
Thing with bach, he wrote more music than most people would ever be able to absorb in a lifetime, even if the only music they ever listened to was Bach.
Great job, really intense as it should be. Brilliant!!!
amazing! I just love St. John Passion. This first part is so strong... it really brings all the power of Christ´s passion to my soul. It´s indeed a perfect version. thanks for uploading...
Featured in Tarkovsky's film Zerkalo (Mirror).
Can't agree more with bigbono12 ... This is the best interpretation.
Music experts say that Bach's music is the Old Testament of Western music, it's that important. It's not hard to see why.
Best performance. Best interpretation
@Kethvan I also think that the B. Britten version is a very good one too. Sung in English, if you are not fluent in German you can follow the meaning of the Passion better and the emotional content of the words and music together do make a deep effect on the spirit, at least on mine.
I can imagine Bach sitting in the middle playing the charpichord in his gloryos music...
This particular piece of music by Bach.
What a version! Fantastic
Superbly done... gave me chills!
Maravilhoso!!!!!
Oh my... A baroque contra-bassoon. Brave man.
Gotta love that baroque contra-bassoon!! Sixteen feet of stuff to hold!. Whew...
thank you so much for sharing!
Very GoooD
@bigbono12 Agree! I had Benjamin Britten's version, unfortuntely it's sung in English (a bit awkward for Bach's works) plus it's not in the sound of period instruments, as seen here... The sounds of period instruments is essential in evoking the time of Bach and other masters of the Baroque era...

Thrilling music. I didn't realize Bach was a poet, I wish I understood german better.
He's more poetic than Shakespeare :-)
suzuki realized the sublime and true feeling of St John after personally experiencing the death of his father six years ago...
sublime, solo BACH podria hacer algo asi...
Described as 'horrifyingly beautiful' by someone.....sums it up well!
I have an old video tape... however, thanks for this quality to enjoy ;-)
awesome!
Sublime!
I love this performance so much... many thanks!
omg it's even subtitled. :D thanks who ever posted this. is there a dvd i can buy?
Sin palabras.
A bit too fast to my taste... but so wonderfully played ! Suzuki is a great director and an evidence Bach's music is universal and calls for what is the most fundametal in our humanity. Listen to Zhu Xiaomei Goldberg variations too. Listen to Glenn Gould, Murray Perahia, Hillary Hahn, Anner Bylsma or Philippe Herreweghe... You will understand what mankind is, and if God exists, it is in Bach's music.
beautiful
Michio Kaku as conductor ?
What about God.!!!!! Our creator gave us this. But what about the object of our desire.
Science is talking about us being in a simulation. It's not its a creation, created from nothing. The Lord is alive and real.
Where can i download the entire concert? It's just magnificent
Great performance.
But I prefer to hear Bachs clerical music performed in a authentic church. Even if the quality is not that high.
0:45 Begginen!
2.53min -maybe his score is upside down?
Hermosísimos sonidos ^_^
Shadow of colossus?
sabe el viejito
bravi, ma acustica troppo secca
herr..herr..

Well, with such a big choir you could even perform St Matthew's by Bach! The choir is definitely too big.
Save the Italian masters Palestrina (Missa Papae Marcelli) and Vivaldi (Judhita Triunphans) ... Despite the Venetian style (which Bach did not master in 1724) these cantatas are tedious and may have been copies of Italian opera oratories and Italian recitals translated into the German and attributed to Bach!
And also anti jewish it would appear.
