    Jory, have you ever seen a Parnis in person? Listen, I get that you don't like homages and I get that homages aren't for everyone, but these things are pretty darn well built for around $100. I can't claim that their movements are anywhere near Swiss quality or even Seiko quality, but for $100 do they really need to be? I've had two of these watches for a while now and they're still keeping good time, they feel hefty and well built and they look great. I agree with everything you said about their lack of originality, but there is definitely a place in the watch community for a brand like Parnis and I don't think we should shame anyone who wants to wear one.

      I own Rolex, Breitling and many others. I also have a Parnis Panari marina militare homage watch. I paid $99 on Amazon for it. The power reserve is no where near correct, but the watch is built like a tank and looks great. I bought it after watching a How It's Made episode showing dozens of robots making Panari watches. I figured if Panari is going to use the same robots as Parnis to make a watch, then who am I to discriminate between the two. I would not hesitate to recommend Parnis to anyone who wants a mechanical watch. Think of Parnis as the gateway to watch collecting. Just like Patek Phillipe, Parnis and all mechanical watches are still 100x LESS accurate than a $5 quartz watch from Wal-Mart, but have a nicer case. I might someday put a $200 strap on my $100 watch to complete the illusion.

    I have a Parnis the flieger type watch (which I think is the least "homage" of all their watches even though some people say its a homage of the IWC Pilot, but we all know that the flieger design was made specially for the German Airforce (luftwaffe) and that other brands like laco, stowa, A. Lange, made this watches). Yes, I am guilty... However, i decided to purchase this flieger Parnis because of the following reasons: 1) I wanted a flieger type watch but i am not "crazy" for the design so i didnt wanted to spend 800 dollars on a Stowa, nor did I wanted a quartz laco (which has a seiko movement); 2) the Parnis was mechanical and has a seagull movement with a display caseback which is decently decorated when you consider the price and; 3) the Price... 50 dollars, which for me, was a great solution because I only wanted a flieger type watch for my beater collection (and as I said, its not like Im crazy for the design, the size (44mm) or the brand and i wanted to put my money on my next purchase (an omega seamaster 300). That being said, yes, Parnis IS A HOMAGE COMPANY, and the worst part is that this Parnis Flieger i have is really... REALLY good quality. The build, the strap, the movement (seagull handwind movements are actually pretty good) even the lume is decent for only costing 50 bucks, Shit the leather strap even came with a deployment clasp, and if you ask me the build quality is on par with other watches i have that cost 500-800, so it really is frustrating because this means Parnis does have the ability to make good watches, they only need good original designs and they would become a really good microbrand!

They have several watches that have respectable movements such as a Miyota 8215, synthetic sapphire glass, and the aesthetics are quite nice. All of this for less than $100 if you buy them from websites such as Aliexpress or Ebay. 1 hour of Swiss wages is probably already worth more than the entire cost of producing the watch in China. That's immediately > 50% already. Or does it have to be 60% of the process steps involved?

  • @fluffyfreak505

    It's actually 60% of the value has to come from Switzerland. It's a really strange setup to me

    • @koolpep
      @koolpep 5 лет назад +1

      here is Wikipedia: Most often associated with watches or timepieces made in Switzerland, a watch is considered Swiss if its movement is Swiss, if the movement has been assembled in the Swiss region, its final inspection occurred in Switzerland, and at least 60% of manufacturing costs are domestic.

  • @VinceGoodrum
    @VinceGoodrum 5 лет назад +1

    Parnis is not a company, TT. It's just a collective of various watch manufacturers. However, I think you should next time actually have one of their timepieces before making an actual review. They are pretty easy to obtain. With that being said, their website clearly states that they are a homage watch maker so it's not like they are hiding anything

  • @SimonFanProductions

    Swiss Made label isn't heavily regulated.
    Most Swiss companies take advantage of that. It's 60% of the value of the watch is "made" in Switzerland and the 40% can be made elsewhere.
    The 99% of the Swiss watch cases and bracelets are made else where and are written off as the 40% of the watches' value while the 60% of the value (could be just the movement) is "made" in Switzerland.

    • @oali2478

      Isn't the movement supposed to be the most important part and what you would expect would have to be made in Switzerland for it to be a real Swiss watch.

    I'm running a Parnis Pilot's watch PA2120 Seagull movement at +4 seconds a day which is at cocsc standards. Now it may be a homage to tbe IWC but it does say Parnis right at the top of the watch its also automatic and the movement decorated and clean . I have to say that I do know something about watches as I own Rolex Omega Heuer and Breitling. I just think that the Seagull movement is a fine movement, thanks for listening.

    There is one thing these are good for though. Before you decide which expensive watch you want to buy just get one of these and see how the size and dimensions are to live with. I don't think any dealers are going to let you take a Submariner for a 1-2 month 'test drive' and often you really need to live with these things for a while. The world is full of people selling watches they realized they didn't like, or simply didn't work for them somehow. These are a good way of understanding different sizes and dimensions on wrist. All my watches are genuine by the way. I have about 70...mostly dive watches, Vostok's, Seiko's, Orient's, Suunto's, G-Shocks. At certain times, whilst living in Asia...I'd buy a copy for exactly this reason. Say what you like about the morals of it but there's no other way to understand the wearability.

The countdown timer is always fake, you set a random timeframe for it to start counting down from.

    I have to say after 30 years of watch collecting being into watches I see no problem with Parnis at all. We all have a choice, buy a Seiko, Hamilton, Glycine, or a ton of other brands that all have their own identity, but to be honest the majority all echo each others appearance.
    The fact Parnis are giving the buyer a quality timepiece that looks great and that isn't a smart watch is keeping alive the tradition of watches instead of youth using their phones.
    Everyone has a budget.....just do not knock them for their choice, that is bad form.

    Here's what I think. I am interested in pulling a watch apart and rebuilding it. I'd rather do that with a $100 watch than a $10,000 watch. And homage watches aren't as bad as out and out fakes. Some of them like Steinhart (or so I am lead to believe) are built to a high standard and they don't pretend to be other than an homage. And one would think that homages would produce a downward force on costs all around. Which is a good reason for watch flippers to be pissed.

    When I purchased my PAN Homage their website was very transparent with the details of what I was getting...316L stainless, sapphire crystal, miyota movement (hacks, hand winds, 21 jewel), and a leather band that feels great, soft, flexible with break-in, and a true sandwich style dial. Lume is excellent, goes the entire night. Watch is clearly branded Parnis with subtle differences from a genuine PAN and the movement is branded correctly as well.... keeps great time.

    I have to say I was very interested in getting a kick ass Panerai but knowing that there are "companies" creating very similarly looking pieces at $100 bucks made me think twice about spending 6k... And sure, I know that the quality is not the same, nor are the movements, but is the actual difference 5900 dollars worth it? Not to me... This is probably why I like micros with their own kick ass and different designs (saw some Direnzos that looked nice, Vortic doing awesome with old pocket watch movements and dials, Aevig, Farer and to some extent, Damasko and Sinn...) That's just my opinion of course. So thanks to Parnis and others, although I haven't bought their watches, I avoided spending too much of my hard earned money... Go figure.

    A watch is a watch. Does it really matter what naming conventions are used? There are obviously people buying Parnis watches (just ordered the cosmograph homage myself), so why are they going to deviate from their current naming strategy? Being a watch enthusiast, there aren't many of us out in the wild. No one (I hope) is going to strike up a convo with another watch wearer and then spend that opportunity insulting that person and their choices. It's taken me a while to learn this for myself, but I would rather see a stranger wearing A WATCH than for them to not be wearing one.

    Just received my Parnis, a Militaire 78, it's fabulous for the money, if it lasts just a few years, I'll be content. They sent the wrong watch but their service to replace it was excellent. It adds to my Hamilton, Tissot, Seiko, Vostok, Tevise, Guanqin & Starking, plus a range of blatant copies (Rolex, Frank Muller, Tag, Hublot, Breitling, Diesel) bought in Bangkok markets. So my watches cost me from $20 to $1000, they all look good, most of them work. I've decided that I prefer Quartz to mechanical, heresy on this forum, because when I pick them up to wear, they have the right time, day/date. The Hamilton I keep on a winder so its day/date complication stay correct. Other autos with day/date complications are a real nuisance to reset when out of power - Quartz solves that problem. Now looking at another Parnis, Pagani Design, Timex Indiglow and/Phoibus. I do appreciate the appeal of precision engineering in expensive watches (I run a Porsche) but for me, if a watch looks good, keeps reasonable time and is not too expensive, I'll buy it.

    I know there is a comment below about this, but it's my understanding that the rule is 60% of the value of the watch is swiss and I believe that includes "labor to assemble" costs. So it's very possible that you could have a watch that says "Swiss Made" and none of the parts are Swiss. I know there was some attempt to remedy this issue, but I never heard if the Swiss actually mad any changes.
