    I'm told that the update to 4.08 is so that they can immobilise your bike if you're doing 52 in a 50 in northern Germany 😀

      You say that, but it actually added extra cruise control functionality and improved stability of the system. That helps me with the riding side! But i see your point. They should be simple machines, not NASA level computer trickery.

    I've owned a few Ducati's and never had any major issues. My mate had an Aprilia Capanord that he done many 10's of thousands of miles on, and again no issues. There was a bike touring company here in NZ that used Capanords and they no trouble with them either. I think Italian bikes have been reliable for at least the past 20 years, but dogma hangs around for so long. I'm planning to sell my R1200GS and get a Tuareg this year because I want something lighter and fun.

    Customer service??!!?? Wth is that? I tried putting my foot down and the dealers(2 bmw dealers)😢 just shrugged and told me to piss off if I didn't like it. They are so bad I am strongly considering selling my motorcycle so I don't have to deal with them anymore. Love the honesty of the mechanic you talked to!

      I say do it mate. I’m a firm believer in voting with your feet. If somebody pisses me off, they never get any of my money again! I ‚burned‘ a Honda dealer from my list, after i ordered 1 too many bolts for a chain swap. They said i had to take the bolt because they couldn’t send it back. At 7€ a bolt i just said to him that „i have to do no such thing. In fact i don’t have to take any of them, so you can shove all 7 bolts up your exhaust and I’ll not be back ever again!„ These companies don’t deserve to take our money with one hand and give us the w@nker sign with the other!

    Bought my Tuareg back in March 23. I do most of my own maintenance but elected to let the dealer wallet-flush me to the tune of $500+ at around 800mi. When new I’d found a couple of rather loose sounding rear spokes and asked them to please tighten them. The service mangler said that would cost me $50.00 extra - in the end they didn’t charge me or tighten the spokes even though it should have been done at the pre-delivery check- BTW the maintenance/warranty book had never been filled out or stamped or signed off by anyone… they couldn’t even find “official” stamp. Having seen the decreasing level of service while working at a Mercedes Benz dealer for almost 40yrs my local dealer’s lackluster attitude didn’t surprise me. I chalk it up to the motorcycle industry’s failure to attract new customers. Now to go out and get my wrenches and sockets out…

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  4 месяца назад +1

      It’s a sad and disappointing state of affairs mate. Makes me mad to think that they care very little about repeat custom or customer satisfaction. That’s how an industry should really be able to starve itself to death.

    ***Andy, I couldn’t agree more***
    Customer Service has gone to shit worldwide. It’s just the same here in Australia. I’ve experienced a nightmare of interactions with a high profile Aprilia dealer and an equally regarded BMW dealer in the past. I’m talking months of delays and lies with Aprilia and being bent over and royally screwed with BMW…$$$.
    The dealer was correct with his version of what the manufacturer will cover and what the dealer in reality has to spend on any warranty or recall work. I worked in a Suzuki dealership for a period of time and had to deal with these issues. For example a fuel leak recall took 1 and a half hours to perform (correctly) but Suzuki policy was that the time required is half an hour and that’s all they’d cover and at a reduced hourly rate. It’s always a loss for the dealer but they have to do it or bit the hand that feeds you. I was also surprised by the minuscule profit margin that exists on new bikes. That’s also controlled by the manufacturers. Dealers only avenue for a decent profit margin is in their Parts and Service work.
    I could go on for ages if I continue to open this can of worms.
    I’m glad you’re enjoying the Aprilia…fingers crossed that all the hassles are behind you.
    Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      That’s very interesting to hear Peter. It’s something that I’ve been thinking about more and more lately. In your opinion, with your experience in mind, what could be done to fix the situation? Is it a typical dictatorship situation, whereby the dealerships are scared to upset the mighty manufacturers? Surely without the dealerships, the manufacturers would be royally screwed? No infrastructure, no mechanics, no parts or accessory sales etc… So couldn’t the dealerships actually refuse the terms and tell the manufacturers to take a flying leap? Granted its a threat of mutually assured destruction, but if nothing changes then nothing will change. The way it is, everybody is hurt. Brand faith is down. Customer service is down. Dealership morale is down. The only people really winning are probably the finance companies!!

    • @peterhird3542
      @peterhird3542 8 месяцев назад

      Hey Andy,
      Manufacturers can basically rule with an iron fist. Not long after I left the Suzuki dealership that I worked in, the representative from Suzuki visited the shop.
      The dealership that I worked in was a one owner operation with about 5 staff covering various responsibilities. Other dealers were much larger and could afford the carry more stock on their floor. Therefore this also gave them more leeway to leverage a lower wholesale price from Suzuki. So where I worked had to pay the full wholesale price. Therefore the larger dealers had a pricing advantage straight away. They could discount but where I worked couldn’t afford to slice the price. As well as that situation, the dealer doesn’t own every new motorcycle outright. They get a financing deal from the manufacturer and have required monthly payment regardless of the amount of sales. So the manufacturers get their money even if the dealers don’t.
      Anyway…back to the visit from the Suzuki representative…he came unannounced, spoke with the owner and said that Suzuki wanted complete payment for all the floor stock. He didn’t have that much available finance to cover such an amount in the timeframe demanded. Therefore Suzuki pulled the stock from the shop. Coincidentally a Suzuki sponsored racer wanted to open his own dealership not far from where I worked. And surprise, surprise his shop was opened and full of Suzukis.
      There is no manufacturer loyalty to dealers…unless they’re selling copious amounts of bikes.
      It’s a business and it has to make money. The problem for the purchaser or end user is that we’re buying motorcycles on an emotional basis not a practical one. If it was a practical basis no one would probably want one…too restrictive, impractical, dangerous and expensive. We buy bikes because we have a passion for them, a desire we want to fulfill and that’s what manufacturers rely upon. The old saying “What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday” is true. I’ve seen it over and over again.
      I love motorcycles but I’d never own a dealership. There’s too many outside factors that dictate the bottom line.
      We wouldn’t begin to talk about accessories that’s a whole other story.
      Thanks for letting me up on my soapbox.
      Cheers 👍

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      Gladly mate, i find all of what goes on behind the curtain fascinating. I’ve heard before that the dealerships are basically financing the bikes themselves. It’s crazy that bigger dealerships get better prices too. That must kill off the smaller (and IMO often better) dealerships before they even really get a chance to compete!
      Totally agree on the passion front. I personally believe that the biggest issue of all… is us. If we stopped buying the bikes, everyone would stop and look up. But we keep buying them, despite skyrocketing costs, terrible service and awful warranty treatment. And don’t get me started on the whole „10 hp more than last years model“ nonsense! In the interest of sales and bottom line, we’ve completely lost sight of what biking is and was. It’s fast becoming a yuppie hobby and much like housing costs, the idiots with more money than sense are driving those of us lower down the ladder, completely out of the race. Oh dear, looks like i got on my soapbox too!

      I’ll be watching with interest. Just ordered an Altrider clutch extender (47% mechanical advantage-lighter with a greater friction zone apparently-we’ll see). Other mods-smaller black Puig screen, black wrap over the red & grey plastics, double-take mirrors, Leo Vince slip-on, 27mm titanium rear axle nut & pivot bolts, cool cover seat cover, quadlock wireless anti-vibration phone charger…& I’ve tried to keep the mods to a minimum. 😅. Quickshifter & heated grips would be nice but no money left.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve got an MRA spoiler on the stock screen currently, hoping that by next year there might be a few more screen options for a summer/offroad screen. Stock is WAY too hot when it’s over 25°!! I do need to look into the pivot bolt situation. Not sure if i want to fit unbreakable bolts like you have, or keep a spare and make them quickly removable if they break. Good arguments for both options. Decisions decisions! I’m very happy that the quick shifter was already fitted to my bike. It’s really rather addictive!

      Yes and no. I think he did a quick job. The rear wheel was still crooked and the forks still weren’t quite straight. He also didn’t actually torque any of the fork bolts properly, as he quickly tightened them with an alan key in front of me. Of course as a pro you probably get a feel for what’s required, but at 130€ per hour i want F1 mechanic levels of precision!! 🤣

      So far I’m definitely trusting it in the corners. Despite OEM rubber, I’ve got no chicken strips left, front or back, and have even had a toe touch the deck already. Tremendous machine! So far I’m mixed bag on the XT. The adventurous routing is a useless gimmick. It’s sent me through villages that had a bend in the high street, rather than along the twisty bypass right next to it. 🙈 The processor is still painfully slow, with far too much lag for a 500€ device. But the screen is great, if you have the time to plan your routes yourself, it’s a great tool so far. Gimmicky crap like ‚up ahead‘ or the fuel range settings are all surplus to actual requirement in my opinion.

I’ve covered 2500 miles now on my Tuareg and I find I need to check around the bike after every 2-3 rides, even short distances! • @AndyManCam

      Very strange. I definitely need to have another check very soon! Why though? The engine isn’t that vibey! Maybe they just saved on threadlock like they did with grease in the rear wheel and suspension linkages! (I’ve already repacked the rear axle and bearings full with fresh grease! I say fresh, there was barely any in there to start with!) But totally agree, the ride is worth a bit of extra fettling!

      Hi Andy, yes I think you’re right about using some thread lock? Re the vibes , not that my wife has been on the back very much, she did comment that it felt the worse bike she’d been on for vibration …and I’ve had 3 Harleys!! So maybe that’s why it’s shaking things loose? It’s weird though because it doesn’t feel that bad from a rider standpoint? Anyway, it’s not stopping my enjoyment….ride safe and enjoy yours 👍

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      Weird. I guess all vibes are different though. Maybe the Harleys were ‚softer‘ more throbby. The Aprilia is way less numbing and tiring than my Honda CB1000R was. Despite having the typically more vibey parallel twin. I have found that the vibes seem to have smoothed with mileage, although i also think that maybe the grade and brand of fuel helps. Might be in my mind but i feel like the ethanol free 98 RON petrol runs another than E10 95 RON. That could well be psychosomatic though!

    Hi Andy, as a fellow KTM to Aprilia bikerist I have to take issue with the posters saying that Italian bikes are more expensive/more trouble* having moved from a KTM Duke to a Tuono v4 I found far less things seem to leak/fail/fall off/electronically warn of impending Armageddon and have had an almost flawless ownership experience with the Italian brand.
    I have handily sidestepped the service/warranty issue by buying a slightly older bike and using AP workshops to do all the big work (if you don't mind crossing the channel to have your bike serviced I'd highly recommend them ;0) but the bikes (so far!)Seem to be far more fun when you are riding them and far less trouble when you're not!
    I did very really buy a Toureg earlier in the year, and may yet still do so save for an odd helmet vibration (phnarr!! probably easily fixed with a screen deflector) and possibly the cheapest, nastiest fuel cap overseen on a motorcycle! I look forward to more of your two wheeled adventures/experiences/rants/drone chasing and hopefully no more bike dropping so that you can test the toureg vicariously for me.
    Enjoy that bike sir :0)

Plus the obvious depreciation from not being new meant that i could use that saving to pay for the first 2 services. Best of both worlds i reckon. A lot of the customer service problems have to do with the fact of the manufacturer policies, just like you mentioned. They have so many little rules and schemes to not pay the dealer the money for the work. The dealer is just trying to get paid, so they are stuck between manufacturer and customer. Granted, I understand there are dealers out there that take advantage, but overall, it just gives dealers a bad name and customers angry and frustrated.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      Which is ultimately see as hugely unfair. The manufacturers should have a little more respect for the channels through which they sell their product. If all the dealerships dry up, because the rules are too hard to follow or because the customers stop buying due to terrible service, then the manufacturers are left with nothing. The Anarchist in me kind of wants that to happen. See how easily the world will continue with no new motorcycles for a year or two. I guarantee that the manufacturers would then quickly change their tune.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 месяца назад +1

      I‘m afraid that my answer is going to positive, but at the same time, unhelpful! I’ve gone offroad with the 1090 (albeit 15kg lighter after my bike slimming exercise) and actually found it quite manageable. But at the same time, I find that while the Tuareg feels noticeably lighter, I also don’t in any way miss the power. If push came to shove, i would currently choose the Tuareg 100%. It seems that 80hp is more than enough to keep up with bikes with twice the power. But the 1090 was still a formidable beast and potentially has the slight edge on the comfort front. Ultimately, if you WANT to go offroad, I’d say go Tuareg and you won’t regret it. If you want a sturdier bike with a meatier engine, then the 1090 will serve tremendously. Either way, both awesome machines that I’d happily have in the stable. The only weakness i ever found with the 1090 was that it could have weighed 25kg less. The Tuareg ticked that box perfectly, and then more besides.

      I know right. Too much to expect that the dealership did literally their only job. Sadly i suppose that’s the ‚luxury‘ of selling to customers long distance. You can rely on the fact that they’re not going to come in and tear a strip off. Even if i legally would have had the right to do so. Such a shame that service is so reliably bad in this industry.

    14:30 Is it a specifically German thing to wrap your prick in your shirt sleeve? I've never heard of anyone doing it before, I have seen some very strange goings on in German gentlemen's leisure videos over the years, but not that particular action.

    • @AndyManCam

      It’s a saying i learned from my dad, so probably military. But it just means that something is very loose. Like a prick in a shirtsleeve.

    Hopefully it is a happy marriage. Servicing costs seem a little steep. Maybe send the bill to the first dealer who sold you the bike they had clearly not checked over prior to giving it to you?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад

      That was certainly a consideration Alex. Sadly they already have my money and know that unless i involve a lawyer they don’t have to make any more effort. I ought to have refused the bike at the delivery stage, but obviously i was too excited and placed too much faith in them.

    Inconceivable I know, but the Zumo contacts will become intermit given time- this comes with taking on\off, so just keep an eye on it. Also, never get involved in a land war in Asia, just saying ;-)

      I've been using a Zumo 396 for years now with no electrical issues. My only complaint is that sometimes when setting a destination (or selecting an MP3 to play), it goes into what I call "Mitch Mcconnell mode", where there is a looong delay before it starts responding again.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад +1

      @rh_8599 i can see that. But TBH i ride under the limit in town most of the time too. There are just far too many kids and stupid people around to risk it. And then out of town, you’ve got all the power you need for a swift overtake. I’d sooner be stuck behind people in town where it doesn’t matter, than out on the open road. Ultimately however you look at it, I notice every time how much more congested UK is than on the continent. It’s a real shame.

    Assuming the power to the USB is the same as it is on my V85 or my mates V100, this would be a clean solution. Owning a KTM and Aprilla, you literally fart in the face of the reliability gods👊

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 месяцев назад

      The KTM was a sure thing in my eyes. Well tested engine, understressed compared to the 1290 version. No electric suspension, no IMU gadgetry, no subscription unlocked cruise control or fueling maps, no illuminated switchgear and solid but simple components. Also reports from the forums were all good. The 1090 range shouldn’t be tarred with the current KTM‘s reliability reputation.
      The Aprilia is a bit more of a shot in the dark, but again it‘s got relatively minimal electrical trickery to go wrong and Aprilias reputation in terms of engineering is improving all the time. Sure i might have to regularly tighten bolts and top up the oil, but i think that’s taking me back to the golden era of owning bikes, when you knew every nut and bolt and felt closer to the machine 😎
