I'll be 62 in April '23 and I believe because of your videos I'm about to take a completely new path. Thank you for all you do on this channel. You are a very inspiring young man.
I've just recently started doing woodwork, have never really been artistic until 2020. I had to have brain surgery due to a birth defect, and after I woke up in recovery, literally in my hospital room, started thinking of things to make with pallet wood. I stayed watching RUclips videos, looking up pictures on Google for ideas and screenshooting hundreds of pictures. I was an LPN working in a nursing home before surgery, and due to some new side effects of the procedure, I can't go back to work. This has become my way of therapy dealing with stress and overwhelming depression and anxiety. I've watched many, many of your videos and now I think I have the confidence to start a small business to help my husband whose only income is his disability check. We lost my dad's house that we had lived in with him for 18+ years in November after my surgery, and had to move into a camper in our daughter's back yard, so that makes it very hard to accumulate enough materials to really do much of anything, but now I have a glimmer of hope. Thank you so much for your videos, your warm and kind personality, and your inspiration!!!
Thank you for the excellent instructional video. I have made 2 so far. The first is 7' the second one is 8' tall. The base of the 8' ended up being 33" at the base, so I had to assemble it outside as the doors would not let it through the door. I wish I could post a picture. It would be nice to see everyone else's version. 😎
I have just completed two of these for our shade garden. I needed height, so I didn't shorten the 8' 2X2s and added an extra "rib" of 30"X30", 12" from the ground. I also didn't want the decorative top and instead used copper fence post caps. These are both stunning and will provide great support for two vines I had previously planted. Thanks for the easy-to-follow video.
Absolutely awesome lesson! I absolutely love timber …. and I wish I could be a 40 yrs younger, son of yours for a day. …. Way to go brother! … you’re admirable, as cool as and I wish you all the luck in the world. …. 👌
I've been wood working for over 25 years and so appreciate your videos! I've been binge watching them and am highly impressed as to how simple you make these projects look, not only that but you're clear explanation is so very easy to follow! I thank you so very much for sharing your experience and ideas!
Christine, I haven't found anyone that can bring a project down to its core steps and make you feel like you can conquer the project better than Matt. He just has a great speaking voice and he doesn't waste time with the obvious, he just gives us the meat and taters so we feel like we could build whatever he is laying out for us. Peace
Thanks for this video! We just delivered 24 to a local nursery!!!! It was a lot of work, they requested them painted; half white, half black in 6 & 7 foot sizes. Used primer and good exterior semi-gloss, sprayed on. We've painted darker colors before and the primer really is does help with coverage, that said we had to go over spots with brush and roller. We putty and paint over the deck screws, but I'm thinking that maybe using a deck screw the color of the obelisk (if available) may be perfectly fine...and then just dab a bit of paint in the hole to cover the raw wood? We had built about 14 prior to this order, certainly no experts but we learned and developed a system to produce. One of the challenges is, these things are big and you need a spot to build as well as store! Oh and then deliver them...not like you can just toss them in the back of the truck!
@@miataman2001 Hey! We used pine. Being that we painted with exterior paint, felt for the price, best to use. Now...I can truly see the value of using cedar if you can get a good price as painting takes time especially when you're building multiples. Thanks for sharing how to make this trellis! Like @lawnytoons5042, I’ve been on a new path as a 60 year old 4-16-24. Your videos are great and your voice is soothing. I like your Grunt Style shirt, too. I’m a monthly t-shirt member myself!
I have been watching many videos on how to make this style obelisk. This is the nicest, best quality piece and the directions are great. More complex for someone with lesser skills, but something to aspire too. Very very nice job!

Matt. Made your obulisk 😂 today. Screwed up the angles the first time because I had the mitre to the wrong side. But my few inches shorter trellis turned out great. Love your channel. .
Thank you. I like it. We live near a Do It Best. They may be up for putting some of these out for sale this spring, especially if we lay on some greenery. I totally enjoy your style of video production - voice over what you are doing vs having some kind of background soundtrack. Thanks for not using one. This is a project my 8 yo grandson can help me with. Help him learn about capitalism and entrepreneurship. Blessings to you and your family.
Thanks for making this a hell of a lot simpler than other videos I've watched. I built one last year using another RUclips video. It was brutal and did not come out as nice as I expected. I'm gonna give it another try now!
My first one took almost 5 hours. But I had to make little jigs for a stop on my miter saw. I guess I need to make a back brace to allow something to hook on as a stop. My 7* bevels on the cross pieces didn't line up right so I just made a 45. They turned out ok. Thanks for the video. Bought the hard paper plans to show you some love for your hard work.

Great job on this and the explanation. It's great. Funny story though, I made some fan trellises following your tutorials, at a friend's house last week I was showing the husband what I made and my wife and his wife came over and said she wanted a few and.... 2 obelisk. @@MatthewPeechWoodworking thanks for replying so quickly. Let's us know you care and actually do read comments not like some others out there. Man I love these videos... you do such a good job of describing each step. I'm hoping to hit the flea market/farmers markets this spring with some of these and the fan trellis! Who knows... they might even sell lol 🤠
I bought alot of your plans the other day including this one. Was wondering if you have a video on how to make your other style obelisk with the spiked top? I bought the plan but would love to see you build one.
Matthew at 2:47 you say you are “going to turn the board twice” I get that you flip the board to make the other side of the cut so it all fits nicely but I don’t get what you mean by “turn the board twice.” I’m really new to this so apologies if I’m missing the obvious.
So I was looking to make some trellis's this spring out of some cedar fence pickets but I remembered I have about a dozen 6 foot long treated 2x4s. Treated 2x4's hold up as good as cedar outside? I would probably paint the trellis white or brown.
I want to make one of these trellis like you have here, but only 5 foot tall. Do I have to adjust the picture frames/supports sizes? Can you give me an idea to start? Thank you.
If you are going to give this build a shot do what I did and it's generally how I approach any new build that I haven't wrapped my crazy ass brain around. Build a small version of the project. I built a obelisk that was 18" tall. I got the angels straight and now I can whip them out pretty quick. I actually build miniature furniture in usually 1/8th scale which means that 1" is equal to 1/8th inch. I build some really nice Adirondack chairs. I looked through the endless magazines and books I have collected over the years and I found a chair that would be a bit of a challenge at full scale but when you break it down and scale it down you realize that you are spending hours cutting out little arm supports along with all the rest of the parts. I had a endless amount of seat slats and the back is curved. I got so sick of the scroll saw and standing at the sander for what seemed like days and watching dust covering my bench. I had the dust collector on but it never gets it all.. Peace
This video awesome and as a novice I find all of your videos to be quite inspirational. Thank you. Quick Q - how does one end up with 2x2 scraps? 2x4s, 2x6s, etc. are not wide enough.

Wish the build videos pulled better for you here on YT but please know that they are appreciated. Keep up the great work. This is a stupidly basic question, but: when you’re measuring out a mitered piece, it’s from the points of the mitered cut, right, not the base? (I get that it wouldn’t make too much of a difference here, but seems like it could in other projects and I was wondering if there’s a standard way of figuring out exactly what the measurements mean.)
Where did you get that post cap? What is the actual name if you know it? I can’t seem to find one in the big box stores. Great job on your trellis and a great video.
I just finished making my first obelisk by following this video, and I have to say this is a very clever and well thought out design. However, due to the arthritis in my hands, there is no way I could follow the video instructions for assembling the squares. Holding two pieces lubricated with slippery glue and then nailing them was simply beyond me. So when in doubt, use clamps. This is going to take longer to read/write than it did to actually do the job. Take piece one and clamp to the workbench, apply glue to the right hand end, position piece two and nail. Unclamp piece one and clamp piece two, apply glue, position piece three and nail. Repeat all the way round and for all the squares. You get the picture.
Hey Matt, are those actual 2” X 2” or are they 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” ? I cut mine at 1 1/2” X 1 1/2” and need to put the miter and bevel on them still tomorrow. However as I thought about it, if they needed to actually be 2” X 2” I think that might change the side lengths a little wouldn’t it? A little help would be appreciated before I make my cuts.
Matt, My wife and I have built several of these and ordered the plans as well to guide us along, the video and plans are great. One question though, if we wanted to scale these down to different heights, say 5 ft or 3 ft, is there an easy way to adjust the size of the squares and angles of the leg posts? Thanks.
Hey Matt! Love the project. I've made a few myself. just wondering how you would calculate the size of the squares if you were to make the obelisk shorter? I've tried the "guess and cut method" but that just wastes a lot of material! LOL. Thanks
You make it look so easy. It’s harder than it looks. I just spent most of my day trying to make it and ended up cutting it up for fire wood. Just not meant to be I guess.
Very instructive. Thanks for your great content. I'm in Australia and trying to work out the best wood for the job (termites and UV issues++). I would love to know what timber you used.
You did a great job. Thanks for the very clear explanation, your cut list, and training. I plan to make one this weekend. I am curious, i am considering screwing the decorative boards from the inside to avoid the screw heads. I was also considering pocket holes for the squares. I am mostly wondering if you have looked into having no screws visible or if it really does not matter. Thanks.
This is a decent video, but you should definitely screw from the back that way it doesn't look like it has 1000 holes in it. Even if its getting painted, no sense in adding more work for yourself with having to use putty or spackel to fill holes.

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I’m pulling for you! God Bless.
If I make the trellis 5’ instead of 7 ‘ how does that change the outside box cuts? Do I do 10, 15, 20 still?
Where did you get that post cap? What is the actual name if you know it?
I can’t seem to find one in the big box stores. Great job on your trellis and a great video.
Great tutorial
Thank you!
Love your videos. I love that they’re not that long. Great editing
I have 4- 7" long ones left ?? But I will try it anyway Thanks
I don't know what a trellis is. But now I want one 🤣
Love this video!!! Question tho, what kind of drill bit countersink are you using at 7:07 that you show to the camera?
Awesome way to think outside of the box Peter! You could also make a jig to hold the angle while you work with it!
LOL. Thanks
I keep having trouble getting my post cap level. Also when trying to screw it in the caps keep snapping in half. Any tips? Thanks
Did you use treated or untreated wood?
does the Obelisk have a jig?
Do you have the measurements of the squares if you only make a 4' tall one?
Another great build Matthew! Did you use pressure treated lumber for this project?
Very well done video. Do you sell plans for the trellis/obelisk? Thank you for all the good work
They are on Etsy.
@@richhahn2443 Thank you for getting back to me. I will take a look
I used long leaf pine. If you're worried about bugs maybe stick with cypress or cedar. Thanks for watching!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Thanks kindly
Nice video.
Thank you.
How do you figure out the length of the squares?
Would using Fir be ok if you were planning on painting it?
Are you using treated wood on these or cedar ?
You shouldn't use treated wood in the garden. Linseed oil is a good alternative
Question: are the measurement's 15" from 90 or just mark 15" then cut?
You did a great job. Thanks for the very clear explanation, your cut list, and training. I plan to make one this weekend. I am curious, i am considering screwing the decorative boards from the inside to avoid the screw heads. I was also considering pocket holes for the squares. I am mostly wondering if you have looked into having no screws visible or if it really does not matter. Thanks.
You can also countersink the screws and plug them, or use a wood putty
This is a decent video, but you should definitely screw from the back that way it doesn't look like it has 1000 holes in it. Even if its getting painted, no sense in adding more work for yourself with having to use putty or spackel to fill holes.
