"After completing NitroWrecks, I started working on the music for Sega 32X game Xmen. Xmen used v2 of our music engine, which allowed us to use 6 FM channels and 4 sample channels." -Jesper Kyd's website circa the 90s :)
While I'm viewing this video new, can I just say that your video on Sega Genesis Sound lead me to try out 32x emulation just so I could try out Tempo? I didn't even think it was possible to emulate a system like the 32x but I've been enjoying my time toying with Tempo and the rest of the 32x library. Thank you for making such intriguing videos!
Star Trek SNES uses Gaussian interpolation and the 32x version doesn't. Also, Toy Story Genesis has a built in MOD player for the Menu screen and ending screen. There is amusingly an unused portion of the module never heard in game. It really is unfortunate how many consoles had hardware that never lived up to their potential for varying reasons.
I'm really glad you did this follow up video. If I had watched just the other vid then I would've been driven crazy questioning how Chaotix can sound so different if it wasn't utilizing the SH-1. That game alone bums me out that more music wasn't made for the 32X.
I didn't realise Virtua Fighter made so much use of it. Ive always thought the 32X was a decent piece of kit although a bit underpowered when compared to it's main competitor the Jaguar. It did outsell the Jaguar though lol
Between Jaguar and 32x, i mean at least 32x uses established processors with not too many or too bad errata, which are published, and the attachment can be bus-spied, while Jaguar can not. Yeah, Jaguar has a blitter, but that's about it.
The 32x would've been nice if not for the Saturn already being out in Japan when it came out. Sega should've probably stuck to the SVP, either as an internal chip in carts or as the planned external version that would've been required for several games, all of which were cancelled.
I also wonder if the 32X would've lasted longer if Sega never released it as an add-on, but rather as a stand alone low budget 32-bit console that would've been BC with Genesis games, a la the Sega Neptune.
@@DannyCD many parents didn't want to buy their kids a whole new system. An add on was more appealing. Plus as far as the ppl who didn't own a genesis, a genesis and 32x would have been the same price if not less than a new single system. And it wouldnt close out the sega cd option. u could buy half the system used. I know a fam that had Sega channel on one already so they purchased another genesis wirh 32x included for a different room. Good times.
Correction. You said NBA JAM TE uses only a single track. It actually uses 6. Intro. Team select. End of 1st quarter. End of 2nd quarter. End of 3rd Quarter. End of 4th quarter. Each unique to 32x. I hear Genesis can't properly fade in and out, but the 32x does it well here. Genesis tracks that fade out like the Afterburner II music test just gradually eliminate layers to give the impression. But yea if track 1 is using the 32x those others are as well since they are the same music pallet. The only tracks that don't are the in game tracks because its using all it's resources on the many fx and voice samples.
The Sega logo intro to the game might be using it too since it sounds like a real formula car passing by. But for certain the Sega logo after you beat the game is a beautiful sounding real guitar. Like a 4 second mp3 sample way too clear to be the Genesis chip. Check it out. If you dont find it ill send a link :)
you appear to be correct! I still stand by my video, though. it's a quick jingle that happens to be a sample played back through the 32X. the majority of the music is not mixed in software, in contrast to games like Afterburner or Kolibri
Star Wars arcade uses it at least in the intro to sample the actual orchestration from the movie. Notice its the same quality sampling as the Tempo intro.
Brutal's music in the DOS version is PCM audio, so using that to compare, maaaan the 32X adds some noticeable aliasing, particularly in the shrill percussion segment. Still pretty muffled in either-case tho.
It possible it did for the drums. Has a very nice bass drum. There's probably more 32x games out there that aren't on the list that use it slightly. Like Virtua Racing engine fx intro and guitar Sega jingle ending. And actually all the drums in VR well. Maybe even more. compare its soundtrack to genesis. Sampled vocals forsure too. There's no where this stuffs written down. Just gotta listen. Mk2 and nba jam also use it for crisp vocals instead of that shitty genesis voice samples. The 32x sound chip was used more than science knows.
@@bondosho that's true. Plenty of sample playback on Genesis alone. 32x did have an extra edge though. Compare voice samples on NBA JAM TE Genesis vs the 32x. The Arcade wasn't perfect either but definetly a difference.
as far as i understand q-sound and sh1 use were not co-incident. Q sound was just a quad panning a technology in essence. I thought the sh1 could stream samples beyond the genesis's own pcm capabilities for more sample channels, which isn't tied to q-sound at all.
Idk why it took me so long to notice but the Virtua Racing Deluxe drumset is the same as Knuckles Chaotix. And compare the clarity of vocals to it's Genesis counterpart. 32x does great sample work. I've been lead to believe Doom actually uses the chip too, but for just the FX of course lol. Music sucks in that one but sound effects rule, for instance the shotgun, if that were on Genesis the sound effects would be farts too lol. Genesis was not good at clear samples. The rumor that the 32X year one didn't take advantage of the chip is wrong, though of course most didn't use it. ..or did they. ;)
"Sorry, Nintendo does it better this time". Way to pass of subjectivity as objectivity. Personally, I thought the 32x version of ST:Starfleet Academy was better.
The SNES handles resampling a lot more cleanly than the 32X. That part is objective. But you're completely right in that which soundtrack is better overall is subjective. (incidentally, I also prefer the 32X of Starfleet Academy!)
I'm surprised you chose that as an example of that then. The 32x sounded much cleaner to me. The SNES was all muffled. Remember, I'm not arguing capabilities, I'm just saying that you said "the SNES does it better" when there's no reason anyone can't disagree with you. Maybe you weren't making it as an objective statement, and maybe I was wrong to interpret that way. Thanks though for replying.
You can't trust wikipedia for anything, always go to the source :) You should also think about adding minute bits of false information in your videos to make then a work of fiction which can then be copyrighted, its something map makers and dictionary makers do as if anyone plagiarised their work they'd know and be able to prove it. I recommend checking out this video, it happened to a youtuber recently where watchmojo stole his content. ruclips.net/video/eHYCZw8DsYw/видео.html Explains a bit more
The problem is that there are no real sources for "lists of games that used xyz features" outside of wikis, usually! I can't say I've considered the problem of stealing information before. I'll have to mull over that, since that seems like a really good way to start rumors and deplete trust if done haphazardly.
I commend people when they admit that they are wrong of something, it takes a lot to do that, especially on the internet. Kudos GST.
Wait, saying you're wrong takes effort?

Kolibri... is also damn beautiful.
That Kolibri is visually stunning! The graphic artists had to work super hard to pull something like this off.
I sometimes think it'd be cool to have a companion series just showcasing the art from games like that, but I'm just a musician...

That was unreleased thou- wait, so Nitro Wrecks was finished in its Genesis form, but the 32X form, Heavy Machinery, wasn't?
you forget about WWF RAW 32X by Acclaim. that game has a real actual instrument sound music
You're completely right! I added this to the description.

If you like games in the shooter genre check out Shadow Squadron and Zaxxon's Mother base 2000. Two hard but well made games.

The 32X has dual sh-2 and no sh-1 cpu. The 32X is just two lower clocked sh-2 with a basic framebuffer and pwn sound.

Space Harrier used it for drums AND bass, as well as sound effects.
Well done! A really appreciated this video update.
Virtua Racing Deluxe uses it. When you beat the game at the very end of the credits it plays the Sega jingle with a real guitar.

also the sound fx for gun fire sound just like the movie, instead of a cheap genesis imitation.

Yep, but it only used the YM2612 for the music, so it's not included in this video

It used it for the vocals. Along with some other games. But yea I remember getting it for 32x and being disappointed the music was the same.

Did you filter out the 15khz noise from AfterBurner? Or maybe it's an emulator recording...
I don't remember if I did, but that does sound like something I'd do.
I think that one in particular was a hardware render, too...so, probably?
