      Yep not just graphically but the sound as well. Those old arcade super scalers had sound that surpassed Genesis but were perfect for 32X sound chip. Afterburner and Space Harrier sound arcade perfect. Outrun and Power Drift would have too. Some reason I like the idea of all the layers playing off a chip rather than an audio cd like Saturn.

    Not really a mystery when you find out that Tectoy was really proactive about releasing games instead of just following outside official releases. Battletoads & Battlemaniacs, Sonic Triple Trouble and others were released for Master System here despite SEGA only selling them on GameGear. MS even got an exclusive Street Fighter 2 release. And there are Genesis exclusives such as Duke Nukem lol.

    • @parappatherapper4141
      @parappatherapper4141 4 года назад +8

      have you ever tried any other console in videogames history? Otherwise I cannot understand how can the 32x be your fav console. I mean, I understand it if you like the 2 virtua games, knuckles chaotix, kolibri, tempo... but you know... Very few decent games IMO, and I've tried them all. Seriously, it has the most awful library I've ever seen, and ports that were already available for the Megadrive/Genesis with a couple of upgrades don't count.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 3 года назад +1

      interesting choice of "favourite console of all time" to say the least!
      well, not that it's a bad choice, no, but the 32X is quite an overlooked hardware and its library is rather small. but it has some interesting specs and the selection of games it got is far better than, say, the Amstrad GX4000 or the NEC SuperGrafx which were full new consoles by the way while the 32X is actually an add-on
      it's surprising how good 32X games are on average considering the system's very short commercial lifespan, the development process must have been madness at times!
      but well, I do own a 32X and it has a healthy amount of quality games like space harrier, after burner complete, star wars arcade, virtua racing deluxe, virtua fighter, stellar assault, tempo or kolibri. I just wish that it lasted a bit longer on the market as I would have loved to see the planned castlevania or that 3D X-men game coming out!

    Tec Toy (brazilian partner of Sega) was a very strong commercial partner that time. The company developed its own Genesis (Mega Drive in BR) port of Duke Nukem 3D, and the results were decent remembering it was a Genesis conversion. It also managed to develop an unique port of Street Fighter II for the Sega Master System, approved by Capcom, stored on 8-Meg carts. Well...the company was quite agressive in its commercial practices and it offered game releases simultaneously to north american versions, holding their own licensing as you reminded; so how the 32x version of Barkley Shut Up and Jam 2 could be reviewed - it was weird but Tec Toy was very proactive in their practices and probably the game magazine obtained a hands-on preview cart from inside the company itself, as most media companies and game industry main sites usually were based on the same two large cities, São Paulo or Rio, so they kept very close contact with each other. Also, brazilian game magazines themselves were highly competitive and wanted to be always the first to report the new releases. However I myself am not sure, this is just a guess based on their licensing and release practices and the industry status that time. Very nice video by the way.

    I used to rent Acme All Stars and Buster's Hidden Treasure as a kid on Genesis. A Sega themed Acme All Stars would have made me kick and scream for a 32x lol. Granted, when it was marked down to $20~ in some stores at the time, my allowance could have covered it!

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 лет назад +1

      I really tried running info down on this and it appears the ones people have in North America are Grey Market machines. There are a couple different cabs (stand up, sit down, ext) but only one version. So the one released in Japan was fully in english with an english marque and art. It's not definitive, but there seems to be few orders generated due to the high cost of the machine and cost per play required to return investment. There was concern expressed about this in late 80's arcade magazines. I realize I could be wrong but more evidence points to a grey market release and not an official NA release.

    • @RalphBarbagallo
      @RalphBarbagallo 5 лет назад

      @@Jenovi Wow, the struggle arcade in my '80s movie theater lobby had a grey market import? I swear I saw the machine a few times--but it certainly wasn't common. This was the stand up one, BTW. Maybe they test marketed it or something? But yeah it was all in English, as I recall.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 лет назад +1

      @@RalphBarbagallo A grey market machine would be cheap. These are cabs cycled off the floor to make space for new games. Then put into a container, shipped to a new country, and sold much cheaper than aftermarket or new games from official distributors. Again, I can't say for sure, but this appears to be the case with this particular game.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 лет назад +1

      To make this just a bit clearer (incase I was confusing in my post), these were released in one country and no longer profitable or in demand, so they box them up and ship them else where to get a return on investment,

      Oh I know. There were some great straight to console games like Silpheed, Soul Star, Flink, Shadow Squadron 32X, Blackthorn 32X, Mortal Kombat 32X, NBA Jam 32X, Knuckles Chaotix etc... but Sega really should have pushed their arcade perfect titles and bringing arcade titles (like the version of Golden Axe and Final Fight on the SCF) and do the same across both of their Genesis add ons. And then more 3rd parties may have hopped the band wagon like Technosoft and CapCom etc. I mean CapCom DID but could have done so much more... they may not have 'new' games for the time but it could have helped spin the creative wheels before the polygon wars really started which came pretty darn quickly after the 32X came out with thanks to greats like Virtua Fighter & Virtua Racing (32X was the better than the Saturn). But heck I loved even the 32X version of Doom! Of all things too!

    Sega made an almighty mess back then. The 32X was cut off before it had a chance, and the Saturn was poorly designed to compete with the PlayStation & N64.
    Both could have been handled so much better. Damn Sega was already on a death spiral.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the info. I never really knew the history of most arcade games, I was just aware of the more common games. I'm not sure now where I saw it, but I think it was in a small arcade in a local mall. I just remember being impressed with the 3D visuals. From that time on, I just assumed that it was released in the U.S. like most other games. Seeing ports for various systems reinforced that idea.

      @@loganjorgensen I did a review for it on this channel if you really want to hear how I feel about it. The long and short of it is the game's very fun and has a ton of potential. The biggest issues, it requires the manual to fully understand how the controls work, collisions issues are a problem, and you need to understand how to start the race because there is a bug that ruins races at the start. A lot of small issues that if corrected would have netted a decent game. I've never played Pony Tale, but up until the Cygnus video, I thought it was a My Little Pony game.

It's a curious graphics engine, mixing 2:1 and 1:1 pixel rendering, plus the backgrounds are JPEG encoded which you don't see much of before GBA which is an innovation even if the compression was too high washing the images out.
