There are definitely no sleepers. They're considering upgrading and retaining the existing XPT sleepers. What they should be doing is running 2 trains each night during the peak days and seasons to Melbourne and Brisbane with a couple of extra sleeper cars in each.
It's a disappointment if the sleeper service is to be stopped. Given these new sets are DMUs (at least when not operating under wires), the engine noise levels wouldn't be conducive to a restful night's sleep. They would need to have either refurbished or new unpowered carriages included in the consist to make them a viable option.
@@markswayn2628considering the existing sleeper cars on the XPT don't have engines under them so if they choose to refurbish them maybe they'll still be able to get some sleep.
I don't think there's any serious proposal to retain the XPT sleepers, I know it was quoted in that guardian article, but it looked to me like speculation by someone who doesn't really understand the technical side.
Unfortunately the run to Brisbane is just a few hours too long for a good night train timing, Melbourne is perfect though. If they could find somewhere cheap to cut an hour or two off the Brisbane run it would be top. Ideally we get serious about the line to Newcastle/Central Coast and cut an hour there as it is the busiest line with the highest return and the greatest possibility of cutting emissions.
@@BigBlueMan118 Since the newcastle line winds around a lot to avoid mountains and hills maybe we could possibly upgrade the track and straighten the line to make it a faster route similarly to how a high speed newcastle line was proposed
To be honest, it’s going to be heartbreaking and sad to see the final XPT, Xplorer and Endeavour service run because I’m from Tamworth NSW which was served by the XPT and is currently served by the Xplorer train because I grew up with the Xplorer train since I was born and I’ve made heaps of memories with the Xplorer and seeing the Xplorer being retired is gonna feel like losing a family member
How good is it that you've been doing these vlogs for 10 years since 2014, as the 24th of January will mark your 10-year anniversary! I sure hope the new Civity trains will enter service without delay (after they have been tested, of course) and we do not have a repeat of the Mariyung D Sets, which STILL have not entered service like they were supposed to in 2021! And when it is officially time for the Tangara T Sets and the Millennium M Sets to be retired from service, their replacements will hopefully be built here in Australia as opposed to overseas.
weren't the D sets supposed to enter service in 2019?
Agree. I can't see the point of foreign construction. Victoria successfully builds all its own including trams and trains.
Tangara will be replaced by H sets, which is Australian made.
M sets dont need replacement theyre barely over 20yrs old they have another 20 in them
bro i saw the new DLR train on the right (London new train) and mate the new Regional Fleet - CAF Civity is so nice and big. keep posting the video with a new train and that also mate, so i can hear more information.
Hi Phil, thanks for an interesting and informative video. Interesting to hear that there are trains still going to Griffith. I have previously thought that line no longer ran. It would be great if they could extend the Armidale line back up to at least Glen Innes if not Tenterfield. Also, trains returning to Cooma and maybe even Bombala would be good also. If the new trains do not include sleeper, they may need to start o full daylight service between Sydney and Brisbane, like they do between Sydney and Melbourne. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
We better get these new endeavours in the southern highlands. We desperately need them.
That's likely the first place they'll go and the endeavours will likely be moved to the hunter or end bits of the blue mountains and south coast lines
@@raildoestravel I sure hope so.
You should see the hunter cars, they seem to always break down and look so run down
@@belchy94 sounds like the endeavours lol
Yeah they keep on breaking down and wait afew times has been near 3 hours for them
Thanks Phil for another informative video on the new regional Trains
I hope i'll get to see one in testing this year when i get out there!
It took me 5 years to spot two Mariyung trains in real life and hope seeing the new CAF Fleet in testing will be a breeze to spot once they arrive in Sydney :)
Thanks for the updates! As an aside, I thought you'd find that email on the hat factory site interesting. Cheers
I never realised how few regional trains were in service.
Will the intercity variant of the Caf Civity trains also operate on the hunter line along with the hunter j sets, operate on the blue mountains line (new Bathurst bullet) and the unnelectrified part from Kiama to Bomaderry? Or will they just stick to southern highlands for now?
one thing that should be mentioned is the manufacturer, CAF, who has recently gained a reputation for shotty build quality, namely, their trains and trams cracking with a train in Norway having to be pulled after 19 days due to cracking
CAF trams and trains are literally everywhere in Europe ...and they are doing fine their trams in luxembourg are one of the best looking trams in the world
CAF trams shut down the L1 line for 3 months due to tracks.
Third . I’m currently watching some of your old videos, just finished the movie 2 and now I’m watching the intercity livery farewell
Awesome! Thanking you :)
You’ll see a lot of highlights for my 10 years of STV video on the 24th of this month :)
Yay can’t wait.
Hey Phil good video, have seen the other video .what gets me is the long and short regional how does the broken hill service fall into the short regional set considering that it’s a longer distance than both the Melbourne and Brisbane services
Hopefully for the long intercity service they can install a card vending machine or at least a water fountain. I made the mistake of forgetting my water bottle on day at Orange and with all the delays it was nearly 7hrs without something to drink. Even allow them to be run and restocked by private regional contractors or staff at central.
I thought the short regional would replace the Dubbo XPT rather than the long regional tbh. Great video and very informative.
Hi phil i do like the videos that you do with transitvlog w love to see more of you & him doing some videos together.
Hi will all xpt xplorer and endeavour trains 🚂 be replaced or just some.
All XPT’s and Xplorers.
Some Endeavours.
@@sydneytrainsvlogswhat will replace the other half? Nifs?
@@TrainsForNSWVlogs I'd assume they would just update the remaining Endeavours, as the NIF can't run on the regional lines.
@@harrybarnett839 I mean electrify Lithgow - Bathurst or Kiama - Bombaderry
@@sydneytrainsvlogsthe endeavours that are replaced could end up running hunter line services
I'm hoping they won't take 5 years (like the D sets). 🙃
I’m hoping not lol
Depends on whether the RTBU sees them as a threat.
In this case I don't think there are any automated features that might reduce staffing levels (well other than sleeper car attendants)
Nice video, Phil!👍
Great video phill! I know this might seem obvious but they are diesel operated, right?
These will be hybrid.
Electric (with pantograph) for the overhead areas and diesel
@@sydneytrainsvlogsoh, that’s cool!
I'm curious about the Xplorer replacements being 3 cars. As you probably know, the existing Armidale/Moree service consists of 6 or 7 car Xplorers, which divide at Werris Creek, so I'm guessing the replacements will be two 3 car sets. Surely they wont/can't split a 3 car set! Any thoughts?
They should seriously start electrifying some Intercity lines such as the Southern highlands line, South Coast Lines beyond Kiama, etc.
Now that I think about the Xplorer being retired kinda makes me tear up😥😥
Thanks Phil for this information. From what you say, the existing XPTs will be replaced by six car Civity trains and the Explorers with three car trains, that is, like-for-like replacements. There is one switch that would make a lot of sense. The Sydney-Canberra Explorer services (currently three cars) should be replaced by a six car Civity set to better match passenger demand. Canberra's population is over 450,000 (plus 35,000 in Queanbeyan) and there is also considerable tourist traffic. On the other hand, a six car Civity set to Dubbo would seem to be excessive for the passenger numbers expected.
a lot of people don't catch the dubbo trains due to their age, but will catch a new one
Phil, are you sure not all Endeavours will retire? If that's the case which Endeavour carriages will retire then?
Some of the Endeavours will be moved to the Southern Highlands.
From what I've heard the Civity LR sets weren't gonna have sleepers, if that's true then some of the XPT's with the sleepers would get a major overhaul just to run on the overnight long distance runs
I did comment in the other video about the Civity fleet mentioning about if they were gonna have sleepers or not. Also mentioned that they'll most likely need to get approval from ARTC, V/Line and Queensland Rail for them to be allowed to run on their tracks
Another thing that I also mentioned that there's no doubt that they’ll need to do upgrades on the lines that they'll be running on, just to make sure that there's no issues with them running on those lines
Hey! I was wondering if you can make a community post on when and where the trains will be unloaded from the ships for train RUclipsrs in NSW when the government announces it so we can all be on the same page. It would really help us.
Unloaded from the ship in port Kembla and trucked to Dubbo
@@paulburgess-qr9rx Oh, I already know now, that happened too long ago for me not to know. Thanks anyway🤣
Hi Phil, I really enjoyed this informative video on the possibility of having these "CAF CAVITY" trains filling the gaps in our ailing long distance train fleet. I certainly hope they will be delivered and in operation before I kick the bucket. Where are these trains going to be stabled ? Will all of them be serviced in Dubbo? I hope they are successful and the CAVITY will be filled with people 😅
Yeah, I’m very certain that I’ve heard or seen somewhere that the new trains won’t have sleepers , more specifically the XPT’s but yeah. I know it doesn’t make sense but that’s just the NSW government for you. I suppose it may make a little sense considering sitting in seats will be made much more comfortable since there will be internet chargers, so you have a choice of sleeping or not on long journeys instead of now when you are pretty much forced to sleep due to limited phone signal, no WI-FI and no PowerPoints.
I beat the hunter line will hopefully get some of the endeavors, because i highly doubt the hunter line with get new trains except for regional train services
when are they arriving in australia 😊
First quarter of this year
@@sydneytrainsvlogs about bloody time!!! 😠
A number of them are already in Dubbo at the new maintenance facility
Hope you've got a 10th anniversary planned mate
I have a massive highlights video :)
When do they enter service?
i hope the 3 Types of trains have diffrent horn octaves, sounding like the Nagrand Theme from wow.
(Type 1 will be the Xpt Replacements, which will have the first half, The Xplorer Replacements will have the second half & the Endevor Replacements will have the third half.
Does they need a cover on the fount, Otherwise if they hit an animal on the track it might stuck inside.
Where will they arrive like Port Kembla or Newcastle?
No date at the moment
first! i love your vids phil!! keep up the amazing work!
Cheers for watching! 😊
I think the southern highlands line would need a big update before we get new trains, we have had alot of derailments near moss vale over time and trains bounce as they come into afew of the stations ah
Several stations on the SHL will need extending, namely Douglas Park and maybe Menangle. But, yes. We desperately need more services on the SHL, especially at Goulburn (2 trains a day at horribly inconvenient hours, 5:30am and 9pm)
@@apertureplays534 yeah I’ve only been catching the train since 2016 but did the line used to get better service
The new SI sets could use their bi-mode function to go into the centre of Sydney rather than making people change from Southern Highlands trains at Campbelltown onto the T8
Would be nice to have better seating for first class for the Melbourne to Sydney route. Maybe some actual first class service for the extra money. I’m from the US and taking that ride in June. Current pictures I’ve seen of the train are awful. No charging. The seats are very worn. Taking the train to see Australia not to just transit.
The XPTs are 40+ years old, which is why there's no charging ports available. I'd recommend bringing a couple of high-capacity powerbanks as there's no other way to charge electronics unless you feel like leaving your phone in the train bathroom 😉
They’re going to have to modify ALL the stations that the XPT, Xplorer and Endeavour trains stop at to accommodate these Spanish things
After taking a look at the video in the description by TheTrainGuy4, I've decided that I won't be travelling on the CAF Civity built trains due to reports of cracks and other issues in their other fleet for other countries. They should cancel the CAF Civity built fleet and instead build them in Australia. I'm sure the Labor NSW Government would maybe want to do that later on due to their promise of locally built trains like the Tangara fleet replacements.
Let's wait another 5 years then.. these trains are almost built. We have them for 20+ years.
The real battle is where we should build Tangara replacements and what they should be.
If they cancelled the order: CAF would sue the pants off of them. And the Tangara’s were nothing to crow about either, they were actually badly designed and not all that well built.
How about give the trains a chance before writing them off? The civity class aren’t among the CAF train classes that have had the structural failures. It’s their Urbos 3 trams and the purpose built Nova 3 trains for England that have had those issues.
When will these trains enter service
No idea yet
I speculate sometime around 2028
All I know is the last train is meant to enter service in 2027/28
@@aydoytprobably 2025 as 2 sets are already complete and a 3rd is almost finished
What are the buffet cars like? Being able to get a hot feed and a beer is one of the key differentiators between taking the train and catching a long distance loser cruiser.
the XPT also goes to Canberra so the new trains will also release
XPT doesn’t go to Canberra anymore it’s the explorer that serves Canberra
are they insane? why no sleepers? -_-
Nice
I really wished the government had ordered them in blue, I really don’t like we’re ordering our trains (except the metropolis sets) in generic orange tones and tints
That decision goes back to 2013 when NSWTrainlink decided to be branded orange.
They look a lot like the electric multiple units used in Auckland New Zealand.
They are bi mode units
@@paulburgess-qr9rx I’m sorry, why’s that up for mention?
The unions too could drag things along too
why are they importing trains? why not build them here like Melbourne is for its new trains, trams and electric buses
The old government
Because CAF won the tender. The world is connected!
@@itechcircle9410 ohh, was there a Tender Process ?????
@@steveamurray59 Yep.
Because CAF put in a better bid for the tender than CRRC/Downer did!
They should have been built in Australia.

they may look a bit stupid but maybe they're gonna be good
Yo Phil I got a question. Will the CAF-civity run on the southern highlands?
Also I got something for you.

2.LETS GET this channel to 30K subscribers(Can you pls make a movie about 30k subscribers?)
Still ridiculous that the duel powered trains won't use electricity interstate. Dumb. There's no reason why the electrics couldn't be dual voltage.
I don’t think it’s that simple. In Queensland, I think the Roma Street standard gauge platform is electrified (it may or may not be), but between Roma Street and the junction off the Gold Coast line at Salisbury in the section that is dual gauge and electrified, it’s such a short section that the benefits are honestly negligible. I could be wrong on this as well, but I imagine that the train might have be stationary in order to change from electric to diesel and vice versa. Similar story in Victoria, the section between Southern Cross and the extent of the broad gauge electrification at Craigieburn has the XPT running on completely separate unelectrified standard gauge tracks. Even if there was any electrification of part of the line, if it’s like a 1 km of overhead wires (if even that much or at all), is there really a point?
I don’t mean to be rude, but I expect whoever made the decision had more of a clue than you do.
@@deanl4575NSW and Victoria are 1500volt DC , whereas QLD is 2500volt AC
@@ralphbyles142 Yes that too, but the OP suggested that the trains could take multiple types of voltage, but my point was more about the lack of overhead wiring interstate on the standard gauge tracks

Is it my imagination or are these the ugliest abominations on the rails?
Three car sets to Amidale? There goes the Friday 4car sets, reduced seating capacity on all train sets. More short sightedness by the government.
Going back to the original sliding seat cushion seats on the original XPT that passengers hated. No curtains, just light reducing roller blind, passengers hate them.
