- What if Papyrus lived as a head?
... Is a question I had for the longest time ever since I first saw his death scene, with the long pause till he... bit the dust :) and that intrest got resparked again after watching some really old fan works of the same idea recently!
Definitely not my usual type of content, in duration or quality, this was moreso also made to pad out the time for something else coming later... a trailer of sorts.
You could say it's release date is rapidly approaching.
But NoBody Came...
I deem this the new pin worthy pun
Remember there are still monsters in the underground even monster kid

Man, this is heart wrenching. Going back to Papyrus's house and seeing him unable to even open the door, along with his somehow positive attitude despite his condition and the dreadful music still playing, you managed to create a truly tragic scene. With the context that you're able to reset and fix everything, it just amplifies it all tenfold too. Sure, you "spared" Papyrus, but continuing this route as opposed to resetting is just cruel. You can still call Papyrus and hear what he has to say, but if you really cared for him then wouldn't you just reset and not leave him completely crippled? In this route you really torture him, killing all of his loved ones that you can and leaving him without a body, deprived of the ability to do what he once loved. Normally there would be hope for Alphys to build him a new body, but in neutral endings where Undyne is killed... yeah, it's not gonna happen. The last phone call really makes it feel like an ending where you deliberately went out of your way to make the life of the one person who believed in you as miserable as you possibly could, and it feels even more sick and twisted than the genocide route in many ways.
I agree. This type of neutral route is worse..
You're basically prolonging his suffering, which hurts more than just killing him
hi mystic
*I AIN'T READING ALLAT 🗣️🔥🔥*
Now persue the route where he becomes king.
King papyrus head.
Freak man 😟
It would have been more hilarious if we just took Papyrus' head as a Key Item, and talk to him like calling him with our Cellphone.
Lel, that was also an idea I had but I didn't go for it since I didn't want to derail the game too much here, as funny as it would've been

Your a Goddam genius
idk if this is a hot take or not these days, but the Neutral route endings are so underrated. They're so diverse, and even the happiest ones have a lot of moral ambiguity to them, so getting another ending in the form of this video really scratches that itch.
Precisely what I wanted to show with this! I don't think it's that much of a crazy opinion as it was before since it looks like the community came around to giving them a chance, but they are still pretty underground (pun not intended) even now
I tried to balance the goofy outcome with sparing papyrus, with the bleak neutral end and the sans judgement towards the end, cause as you said, it's not always black and white with them!
It’s not. Even out of all the people always hollering about what fancontent “We need more of” in this fandom, almost nobody talks about how we’ve forgotten about the Neutral Endings
@@OffbrandDTravelerI suppose. When I said the community came around to it, I was mostly talking about the awareness gained from bigger creators, such as Dorked, shedding light on it with their videos.
Even then though, the wider fanbase still knows nothing of it, which is why I said that they are mostly underground! So yeah, you right
Yeah! neutral is underrated fr
Does "papyrus lives as a head" change any other neutral ending besides the papyrus king ending? What about horrortale with papyrus as a head without body?
What I like about this is the subtlety of the changes. The plot doesn't change massively from the regular papyrus ending. Papyrus remains his usual effervescent self... but just as things start to get on top of him in the regular Papyrus ending, you get subtle hints about how the disability is affecting him. He never pities himself over it or blames you over it, he just acknowledges that things are harder for both himself and everyone else as a result, before doubling down on his determination to make everything better again regardless. That humble lack of complaint just makes you feel even guiltier for hurting both him and the underground in such a profound way. I feel guiltier in front of a dented but unbowed Papyrus than I would in front of a completely broken one.
You described what I was aiming for to a tee, mr Napoleon! I wanted this to start off comedic with how everything in Undertale normally is and slowly as the video goes on the veil of your actions would slowly be pulled back. In some ways this is meant to be more tragic than his normal death as he's been left crippled and all his friends are gone, here.
I did have some other ideas of how this would go, such as the possibility that Papyrus would get put into your key items and join you through the game, which would've been more lighthearted in nature, but didn't want to derail the plot as much and wanted to make it manageable to get out in a short amount of time, as I've actually got something *else* I'd been making on the sidelines!
This is heartbreaking. Papyrus is literally crippled from doing anything he loves anymore and Sans has to do all the work because the rest of the Underground is dead, leaving both of them and the remaining citizens to deal with the grief and loss.
This ending is almost as bad as Leaderless.
Worse I'd argue for papyrus' condition alone
not really, its basically just leaderless with a hurt papyrus + a less depressed sans. and overall the underground is in a lot better shape than leaderless due to sans and papyrus leading.@@No.1RatedSalesman

*no body* to go with =)"
Now it's possible to make a snowball with Papyrus's head :D
papyrus's head can roll to party
It'll be an amazing snowball, maybe great even
This is true in both the literal term, and the why the Ike was intending it.
Why didn't the skeleton go to the prom? Cause he was ugly fat and no one liked him
Nah mate, cuz he was ugly, fat, and no one liked him!
I really like these Undertale and Deltarune "What if...?" videos. They are quite entertaining and have a quality standard. I hope you keep making videos like these.
I'll be doing a mixture of them! Ye
Well he did say he wanted to be HEAD of the royal guard, dreams do come true
Why is nobody talking about how sans says “but hey, who am I to JUDGE?” That’s so creative
I wonder what'd happen if you called Papyrus while Undyne's chasing you to Hotland. Normally you can't call him when the game considers him "dead" (and thus he missed his meeting), but this time he isn't _actually_ dead, just reverse-decapitated.
In the middle of the video, there was some text explaining that while the game considers Papyrus "dead" (as in: any events that normally involve him play out without him), you can still call him.
Probably that situation would play out the same as before, with some subtly changed dialogue from Papyrus, and Undyne would still politely stop to let you finish your call.
i love how Papyrus just S P I N after the fight
It's not impossible that he'll just... regrow a new body at some point? Might take a while. In a world with magic, I'm not tossing anything off the table.
Well its supposed that their body is made of magic, so meanwhile his soul is okay and have the sufficient magic technically he could (English isnt my first language be chill with me xd)
@@Black-s1i you wrote almost everything perfectly! The one thing that's incorrect is that it should've been "his soul is ok and *has* enough magic" bc soul is an "it" and when something is a "he, she, it" you use "has" instead of "have"!
But I've read much worse from people who have English as their first language, so you did great!
Based on the fact that Undyne has seemingly permanently lost her eyeball from some past injury (since the Undying shows that it actually IS gone and she's not just wearing the eyepatch for fun), presumably monsters can't just regrow their bodyparts, and even if they could I doubt they could regenerate their ENTIRE body.
@@curlyfordoge4366 papyrus could also just. Make himself a prosthetic body. He has plenty of bones he uses for attacks and so does sans
@@mertensiam3384 That presupposes though that bullet magic is capable of producing bones not only complex enough to be shaped into body-parts (the only bones the skeleton brothers ever seem to create are femurs, not the pelvis, spine, ribcages, etc. that comprise their actual bodies), but also to adequately serve as a body (i.e. that they are fully tangible enough to interact with physical matter, can be smoothly articulated, can be easily maintained enough for the bullets to KEEP their shape and position, etc.) For all we know, this could just be beyond what Papyrus, or any monster, can practically achieve.
I always love these "what if..." guys from Deltarune and undertale Keep it up! You are on a good path
Thank you dude, means a lot to me! I got a bunch more things I want to show
Now I'm just imagining an au where Frisk decided to spare Papyrus last minute before his head turned to dust and shoved a piece of food in his mouth, healing him but not bringing his body back and now frisk has a backpack with Papyrus in it carrying him around during their journey and hell! Maybe he even assists them in battle! Using his bone as weapons and maybe making little bone platforms for you to land on so you can avoid attacks easier!! Just imagine Undyne not seeing Papy in the backpack and getting really confused when "the human" summons bones in order to block all the spears 😂😂😂
And then getting horrified after seeing your friend and Disciple being now, just a head. She wouldn't be happy, just shocked and confused
This would be hilarious, but it could only work in a world like Underfell where everyone is evil. Otherwise, Pap won’t fight, and no one would fight him.
@@isaacskinner5565 No, but that's the cool part! He would be in the backpack so no one would see him and he wouldn't attack anyone! Rather he would simply make it easier for you to avoid attacks!
@Naku_Creates what about when the human kills people?
@@No.1RatedSalesman Hm, good point... Maybe Papyrus wouldn't think that the monsters just teleported away? Considering that Sans uses shortcuts so often Papyrus could miss seeing them turn to dust and just assume they left... Or if you want a more cruel path you could say that Papyrus is scared of the human killing them so he just helps them in order to stay alive, the even more upset part would be that at the end the human would probably just kill Papyrus anyway.
I love how strangely canon these videos feel
so refreshing to see new undertale fan content that's only a week old! not only is the writing spot on with head-only papyrus but the way sans responded to it was also really interesting
Is so sad to see Papyrus sad because he can’t do anything for himself anymore, I can imagine the pain that it feels to not being able to do anything that you like to do anymore.
I wonder if this could happen as a fun value. Or perhaps.. change a fun value event entirely?
nope
I mean ye that could be something, I saw some other suggestions that it could be triggered through doing the smallest amount of damage to him on purpose, either could work to be fair
@@JQR. yeah I believe that this would be more likely to occur by doing a small amount of damage, since this would appear to be a core component of the game.
Fun value events usually change a singular thing about the game, this would do more than that

I just had a thought now while reading the comments...
What if you break/leave papyrus as a head but spare everyone else? Like what kind of outcomes would that have besides subtle mentions that Papyrus is just a head?
Idk, just a thought. Although now thinking about it, there wouldn't be much differences if you spare anyone else after leaving Papyrus bodyless
I think that to achive this you need to deal *as little* damage as possible.
Similiar to Mettaton NEO, who has different dialouge If you don't hit him hard enough.
Thats a myth he has the exact same diálogue no matter how hard you hit him the thing that changes it is not killing everyone on hotlands
@@danielgonzalez-vm5lj OH.
Thank you, I didn't know that that was a myth!
or maybe just forgot.
Actually thats.... kind of true, you see ,to get the dialogue you're talking about you need to abort the gen0cid3 route in hotland and go fight mettaton,he will still be NEO but it will go on as a leaderless neutral ending after that,so it doesn't depend on hitting hard enough, but failing to kill 40 fellas
@@sneerybog9399 it's not leaderless alphys becomes the " queen"
The leaderless ending is if you kill regular undyne and mettaton EX alongside toriel and papyrus and at least a few other monsters
Everything else you said was right tho
@@danielgonzalez-vm5lj oh yeah sorry i forgor about alphys
How would this work in the pacifist route but you still dust papyrus's body away? Would sans or undyne react any different? Would the pacifist run be aborted?
A pacifist route would effectively be aborted yeah, since without papyrus being present you wouldn't be able to get the hangout with undyne, and without befriending undyne it'd turn into a neutral ending.
There'd probably be a bunch of variations in neutral endings, not just with the king Papyrus one, though.
There'd be some differences in dialogue if you were to behead him in neutral, like Papyrus' dialogue would be different after the fight and he'd say some changed stuff when next to his house, specifically stuff relating to Snowdin being empty would be replaced with something else since it doesn't get evacuated in neutral for obvious reasons.
Sans would have some changed dialogue in a neutral route at the waterfall sentry point, I actually made some up but didn't have time to put it together:
* ...
* so you made it past my brother...?
* not gonna lie, i'm surprised he didn't lose his head at the defeat.
* oh wait...
he did.
* ...
* probably not your proudest moment, huh?
* i'd give you a score of 6 out of 10.
* but hey, who am i to judge?
@@JQR. but cant papyrus ask sans to take him to undyne's house? I can imagine a funny moment where you see papyrus's head over sans's head on front of undyne's house and then undyne is all like "wtf" when she sees papyrus
The dialogue is pretty good btw, 10/10
@@dylanzlol7293ok ok, holup, that's actually a really well thought out idea (and damn, a missed opportunity for me), I could imagine it

Oh sí! Tus vídeos siempre levantan el ánimo, seguramente cuando se estrenen los demás capitulos de Deltarune tendrás mucho material para desarrollar la Weird route

I wish you could use Papyrus's head as a backpack (Giving you advice and more inventory) and if the player wants to continue with the geno route like as done in deltarune chapter 2 with noelle, and make papyrus... Well, you already know "Dustbelief"
A papyrus head item would be funny
Dustswap
I had an idea to mix with the key item idea for like the best neutral run you could get, and then you take him to alphys’ lab and she uses one of those mini mettatons from the attacks, and if there were to be the undyne date papyrus would just roll in and undyne would be super confused.
Just an idea I had for a more lighthearted tone
That's a kool pitch! I originally planned out to have you carry him around after the encounter in your inventory, like you said, but didn't want to change the plot up too much for this. Still maybe I'll revisit this at some point since a bunch of other people want to see him carried around, unsure
Ya know, ive always felt that some bosses shouldnt be requiered for genocide, because in the case of papyrus, or toriel, wouldnt it be much more cruel to leave just them?
Question about the neutral route version of this: Sans would completely disappear after that or would it continue to appear normally? What would he have said if had gone with the "yes" option in the judgment? Also great vid bud, really
Sans is just gone for the whole thing until the judgement hall, it'd just be a bit ofd if he stuck around after since although you didn't kill papyrus, you still beheaded him, the excuse here is that sans takes papyrus inside the house after the undyne encounter, which is why either of them aren't seen after.
As for the 'yes' option in the judgement hall, I actually wrote that down! Here it is:
* ah. i see.
* ...
* well, crazy idea but why not use it now?

Man, that bit of the end of the king Papyrus ending when he says he misses Undyne is still super sad :(
Head of the Royal Guard is real . . .
:D
I like this route. Everyone says you torture Papyrus and how it's supposed to make you feel guilty, but no one really talks about why he doesn't blame you. He wanted to save you from your evil, and he did, even if it was just barely, and cost him body. The way he sees it, he saved you from yourself, so he's happy with his life now.
I feel like Toby would've and should've actually done this, except that it would sort of ruin the otherwise dark tone of the genocide run by combining it with the humor of the pacifist run.
Fair, though I do feel like the genocide route itself has quite a few times where humor still rears it's head, albeit extremely sparsely, more in a dark-humor sort of way to still fit the serious tone.
My main examples that come to mind would be, the joke mettaton NEO fight or burger pants being the last man standing in the hotland/hotel area, still working his job even at basically the end of the world!
It could be a neutral run exclusive sort of deal, since papyrus's head comes out anyways when you kill papyrus in the neutral route, you could maybe get an alternative version of the true pacifist run where papyrus has no body.
I feel like he could've added it if it was given the option to either keep him as a head ( leading to a neutral route ), or kill him ( still continuing genocide route ). Papyrus was still comical even during Genocide route before this, so this option of killing his head still wouldn't make Genocide any less dark and eerie, it would just add more to it knowing even when he has a chance at living as just a head, you still kill him.
You could make for a complete geno route of this concept, like, Frisk does a Insanity!Sans and keeps Papyrus head as a trophy while Dustin everyone underground =]
You could make this by putting the option on the act button.
Reading your own comment, fills you with CRUELTY.

I guess it’d make more sense, given that he’s a living skeleton and all. He and Sans could’ve probably easily detached their body parts anyway.

1. * (The door is locked.)
2. You'd get a variation of the 'Betrayed Undyne' ending, the one where she blames you for Asgore's death and Becomes Queen. Since Papyrus isn't present you wouldn't really be able to befriend undyne and get a 'pacifist' ending.
@@JQR. ok

He'd also have an act option! It's basically just a second Check option where Papyrus gives a comment about whoever you're fighting.
If you ended up using him as an ITEM in battle, he scares away the encounter [Essentially counting as a Flee]. This could only be used against CERTAIN enemies though. Bosses you obviously can't scare away, and I feel as if something like Temmie wouldn't be too scared either. He has OTHER effects versus certain characters though.

* AH! HELLO KING ASGORE! I WANTED TO SEE IF YOU COULD LET MY FRIEND HERE CROSS THE BARRIER!
[..... Asgore does not look amused. His defense raises.]
Just to note, using the skull or Papyrus Check in most battles would briefly replace the music with Bonetrousle before the check is over/the enemy flees.
[Though for the bosses it would work differently. [Undyne and Sans] it would just pause their music while he spoke, Asgore's music would have a SMALL pause before cutting to Bonetrousle and cutting back, and Mettaton's theme would actually SPEED UP if you use Papyrus' head, only during Paps' dialogue though!]

Nah but for real, thanks! I always try to make these as close to the real thing as possible so it means a lot when people actually end up believing it to be official to some capacity, in a strange twist.
"I could NEVER send him into battle! He'd get ripped into little smiling shreds." - Undyne
This is tragic and comedic at the same time.
Would be cool if papyrus become a companion during the geno route and acting like mimir from god of war and warning the player from incoming attacks

You first Undertale concept? Awesome.
I guess it is! I thought I had already made one
Just discovered your channel, amazing videos🎉
Imagine in the sans fight sans is just holding papysruses head allowing him to comment on the fight
I really like this, it sort of reminds me of when you visits undynes house if you kill her and papyrus is still alive except of course the hangout can’t happen since she’s dead, it’s like a so close yet so far kinda moment where you never get to truly have those moments with these characters due to your past decisions (I really like rambling huh)
Wow papyrus was spot on.
bruh that is worse than killing him, you paralyzed the poor guy for life 😭🙏
But he can roll and talk
*i was expecting this to be a dub of that only a head papyrus comic, but this is great too!*
This was definitely partly inspired by it! I recently stumbled into comic again and it sparked this
@@JQR. *fair enough. Great work tho! Almost feels like itd be in the game proper!*
I can just imagine papyrus rolling around on the ground casually💀😭
At least he can truly become “HEAD” of the Royal Guard…?
there is skeleTon of fish in the sea. they said, but noBody believed them.
this joke did NOT make mettaTon of people laugh.
@@emisstuffleomy head fell off from laughing at this joke
@@JQR. that one goat me good
hes so powerful he learned how to roll with his head only immediately
7:31 sans:NO GRILLBYS FOR YOU
Frisk:CMON I SPARED YOUR BROTHER!..mostly
We’ll do anything for more, am I right? I mean, none of us REALLY feel bad for him. We just pretend we do.
42063, 6 damage points off what could have been absolute greatness
I love how the calming music cut out when he meantion it
If I would change one thing about undertale, it would be this. You can still kill his head or you can spare
I guess you could say that is your “head” canon?
Ayyy
Ohh man it’s so heartbreaking to see papyrus like that😢😢😢😭😭
insanity sans : 👁👄👁
2:06 good to know the player stopped
Contrary to what it seems, Papyrus can now surely get a-head of the game! (…yeah that will do)
While I do know Deltarune very well, that does not mean I know every aspect of Undertale… I played Deltarune first believe it or not. For example, I am not even sure if the background music/ambience in Snowdin after fighting Papyrus is new! My feeling tells me it’s a change though. But I think the track that plays when frisk waltz through the forest is different too, genocide route doesn’t get that different with its music early on right?
Before even talking about actual things about the concept, I wanna say that the effect when starting the papyrus fight is always confusing to me! All the fractals makes me think that Papyrus summons Frisk to a pocket realm or freeze state lol. Sans can teleport and stuff, so Papyrus has his own anomalous skills lol. But it is apparently a “snowstorm”, took me like 7 yrs to consider that lol.
Onto the concept itself, a what if about papyrus’ noggin. Oh, and not to forget it’s your first Undertale video (:D)! In the fight, that stick item action is great and shows character lol, but it isn’t new right? Just “rare” cuz who would have THE Stick in the inventory and use it on Papyrus. Interesting damage numbers though :o. “You didn’t do a violence! …mostly” lol, never change Papyrus. Then he rolls away, pretty on brand lol. So after that, he’s just a skull in front of his house and still gives you his phone number! What a guy. The changed dialogue is quite small but so accurate, impressive! Papyrus being so positive and more sad that he can’t hang out with frisk than anything is what the skelly would do. “With great power comes with great calls!” lol thanks Great Papyrus. I know some things he says in this part are unchanged, but that first phone call about the talking skull being Papyrus and not decor is excellent lol, it matches so well. I like the detail of Papyrus still matching his portraits when talking, he can still put on his cool shades lol. So you go revisit the snow Papyrus, and that snow house when frisk slides through the trees was not in Undertale? That is… a detail that I felt the man himself would do too, you know the games’ humor very well. The snow Papyrus, fittingly, lost its head! Those darn teens, poor Papyrus indeed (flames and spikes on snow? That’s our Papyrus lol). So you walk back towards waterfall to talk to the guy, Sans. Last time, Sans had to deal with an angry purple girl in Deltarune, but now he’s back in Undertale. His dialogue is literally perfect sir, “you went about it in the worst way possible. But still” spot on. I thought he did say that “who am I to judge” in Undertale too as a joke to lead to that he is the one to judge you, again I am not that knowledgeable in Undertale facts. After that, frisk does the undyne intro with MK and turns around to see Sans leaves and Papyrus gets sent to the Deltarune zone at 9:37 , at least we can call him still lol.
The little break with the footnotes is pretty neat. Really sells the tone of a showcase of a unseen or unused choice. I guess something about Undertale concepts like this one with Papyrus is that even though it’s quite small, it leads to many potential differences in the game that you have seen with all the comments mentioning other potential encounters or different implementations like Papyrus being a key item instead (that’s funny lol). That’s the thing with Undertale… choices do matter here.
The first stop from the footnotes, Judgement hall. The change is really short, all things considered, but it’s Sans, ya know. I like seeing the heart flip between yes and no lol. So you say “no” and Sans says that it’s your viewpoint… and says one more thing, and it’s exactly what I expected him to say. “Don’t hurt my brother again”, in this route it is perfect and I like that it is a threat. His analogous line in the run where you only kill Papyrus is phrased as an accusing question, which is spooky, but I do like the version shown here as… I guess it resonates in me as Sans shows anger that only brotherly love can fuel. Also I saw the option about if you said “yes”, Sans saying that you should use that power now because “You just wanted to see what I say” and that one is so effective (almost made my jaw drop lol), Sans would be making those secret finders feel real bad. Before moving on, this judgement hall section is the most obvious when the dialogue switches from main game to the different ones, weird because the other dialogues are smooth, well can’t win em all.
Finally, the king Papyrus head ending, well after the credits of course. The sequence is timed really well with the music, with the melancholic part matching with when Papyrus talks about how missing his body is affecting him. It’s a testament to his character and how faithfully you’ve adapted it that the overall message from this ending is the same as the original one: Papyrus is the king and he and Sans are working to take care of the underground, he finds the job hard but is determined to not give up. Of course, there is something different, of what you did to him. If this route was real, this ending would do a fantastic job at making the player regret and/or feel bad for hurting Papyrus. Papyrus may not ever say anything to frisk about it but the player took away more than just his body; he misses being able to do things for fun and misses being able to be a better friend, woe on you player. Papyrus’ different dialogue in this ending is brought up smoothly and transitions well to him talking about Undyne. You did a good job JQR.
This comment took me so long to complete lol. I’ve said it a few times by now but your skill with dialogue is unmatched man! With Undertale, everything fits right in with this concept. I will be a bit faster with the rest… cuz the rest are not Undertale lol.
Also, congratulations on 10,000 subscribers dude! That’s a big milestone, you earned it. Take good care sir.
