Had a similar situation, referred to the original shop manuals. Seems there are fusible links at the connection to the starter solenoid. I haven't been able to get to the wiring harness so I did a similar patch using a fusible link at both the battery and alternator connections. Sorry you had the problem, but happy I'm not the only one.
I think the main feed wire for the ignition switch comes off the battery cable terminal at the starter, with fusable link wires. Then goes into the cars main wiring harness, to feed everything in the body of the car. I think the main charge wire from the alternator also goes down to the battery cable terminal on the starter also. So, yeah.
I had the same issue on a 1985 corvette.
It was the blue fusible link at the starter solenoid.

This car is a 1984 convertible corvette. One of a kind cause thay did not make convertibles until 1986. ????

I just inherited an 1985 corvette and iam having the same problem . I hope this works cause I've tried everything.

I have a '84, had to replace all the fuses. They're down at the starter solenoid.
