    On Survival Horror- you missed out a really important intermediate step between Sweet Home and Resident Evil. The 1992 PC game "Alone In The Dark" (and both it's sequels- all three of them came out before Resident Evil). When you include this step in your history of the survival horror genre, then all Resident Evil introduced was bad voice acting.

      Yup ResE 1''s stationary camera is straight from Alone... gods, that game controlled like a broken tank.

    • @x.kalibre
      @x.kalibre 4 года назад +9

      Yeah, I thought of it as well. Somehow, Alone in the Dark is getting more and more forgotten when it comes to the origins of Survival Horror. Sure, it was probably also influenced by Sweet Home, but the fixed camera angles and tank controls in a 3D environment that it brought to the formula were certainly very characteristic of the genre, for many years after.

    • @x.kalibre
      @x.kalibre 4 года назад

      @videoluver7 part of the reason of what? We were discussing Alone in the Dark, so I don't see where you're getting at :P

    • @x.kalibre
      @x.kalibre 4 года назад +3

      @videoluver7 nobody thought RE was a remake of AITD. What we were referring is that its mechanics and gameplay were as influencing for survival horror as Sweet Home. Yes, so what if RE was imagined as a remake of Sweet Home? That doesn't take anything away from the fact that, when it came to tank controls and fixed camera, AITD was before RE and laid the groundwork for the genre.

    We need to clear something up here, Castlevania Symphony of the Night was called the first metroidvania for a reason. It was a Castlevania game that was played in the style of Metroid. So all of the other games are nothing more than Metroid style games. I don't know why everybody wants to call these types of Adventures a metroidvania when they all are clearly Metroid style games.

    Oh yeah here we go, computer science time. I don't have a computer science degree but I have worked in the field for 18 years so I'm going to give this everything I've got. Baud is a transfer rate, with each baud being a single 1 or 0 transmitted per second. These older systems only communicated 7 bit ASCII (not even a full byte!), but included 3 overhead bits per character for a total of 10 bits per character. So the 300 or 1200 baud options give you either 30 or 120 characters per second respectively. This would mean to transmit a full update of the 80x25 character terminal it would either take 64 or 16 seconds. They must have some cool optimizations in place to get it down to that one command every 9 seconds which I'm guessing was the faster option.

    You seem to be a bit confused. You can't seem to decide whether you're trying to identify the "Ur-Example", the "Trope Maker" or the "Trope Codifier". The Ur-Example is the very first determinable proto-example of something. The Trope Maker is the first proper, fully-formed and recognisable example of something. And the Trope Codifier is the one that popularised and defined it in the public consciousness i.e the one that everyone wants to copy, as you put it. So the Ur-Example of the FPS was probably Battlezone, the Trope Maker was Wolfenstein 3D, and the Trope Codifier is DOOM.

    6:13 Yes I can argue that metroid and castlevania SotN didn't start the metroidvania genre of games. That title belongs to the ZX Spectrum game Jet Set Willy.

    • @ezekieloruven
      @ezekieloruven 2 года назад

      Disagree: Jet Set Willy didn't have certain characteristics of Metroidvania genre games, namely the act of increasing your hero's abilities to get to areas previously inaccessible. Willy never got improvements, and as far as I know, there weren't any areas locked away from the player at the outset.
      Jet Set Willy is a great non-linear platformer, to be sure, but a platformer does not a Metroidvania make.

    Okay I'm legitimately surprised that the original starcraft, a game I had played a lot as a teenager in the 2000s and as a young adult in the mid-to late 2000s. I do not recall that custom map. I was so certain that DOTA in Warcraft 3 was the invention of the MOBA genre.
    Not to mention I actually have a lot of experience designing campaign maps on the original starcraft and you can't actually level up anyting in the original starcraft at all. It makes sense that it would be in Warcraft 3 because you have heroes that you can level up but starcraft does not have that. You can program that in a custom map on starcraft 2 and of course in heart of the swarm kerrigan can level up, but in the original starcraft there is no leveling up so even if that custom map did invent the MOBA genre it must have been pretty limited.

    EA and Activison/Blizzard long ago adopted the classic corporate mantra of "don't make quality products when you can destroy quality products leaving the customers with no choice." World of Warcraft is largely to blame for this because it was the first time gaming companies had to objectively look at a game as say "this was TOO successful - people aren't buying new games." And thus the systematic production of "Just good enough for a year or so" model of game making was born.

    Civilization/4x is the most glaring omission that can't be argued about, but Doom should be on here, too.
    Doom wasn't the first FPS, but it did spawn a wave of imitators so faithful that the only term that could be applied to them was Doom Clones. After Golden Eye and Half-Life redefined what am FPS could be, the Doom Clones fell out of favor, but they've come back in a big way lately. Doom may not be the first first person shooter, but it is unquestionably the first Doom Clone/Boomer Shooter.

      I'd argue that Ultima (particularly Ultima III - 1983) did it first. The creators of Dragon Quest even say that much of Dragon Quest comes from Ultima III. Even then one could go 2 years further back to 1981 with Ultima I and Wizardry, but those lacked many JRPG (or CRPG) hallmarks that the 1983 Ultima III pioneered. And I don't buy into "if it's not made in Japan, it can't be a JRPG because that's the 'J'". JRPGs are a style/genre.

    Actually Pac-Man is the original survival horror game. The genre is not defined by RPG systems and puzzle solving but rather the idea of escaping from relentless enemies who can very quickly result in a game over. In essence, it's about running from threats more than confronting them which is why Resi fans complained about the franchise turning into a run-n-gun shooter during the early 2000s.
    But, even setting the mechanics aside, the idea of being trapped within a dark labyrinth until you collect all the critical items nessersary to escape while being hunted by hordes of relentless and deadly ghosts is something you'd expect from a survival horror title wouldn't you say?

    A list with actual facts instead of the usual first internet website copy. Most people think that league of garbage was the first MOBA, but they only invented the name, because people kept calling it DotA genre, because.. well Dota All-Stars was the one that made it popular and aeon of strife was the one that invented it.
    tbf I wouldn't list "Souls-Like" as a genre, but I guess its now a very popular third person action rpg system. I mean the only thing they have added was that souls returning system and I wouldn't call that a groundbreaking new feature for a genre.

    Damn I remember seeing the POWER PAD (BODY POWER!!) at a friends house as a kid. They could make that an adult only game I think now 😘

    Am I crazy or was the footage of Metroid _not_ from an actual Metroid game?? It had assets from Super and looks like it was played like the original

    I wish the Souls like games would evolve into different visual and art styles. That's an area they seriously lack diversity :(

      Probably because Street Fighter 1 came out before it. Not to mention several other titles before that.

    Rampart is not "Tower Defense", it's visually similar but has little to do with it. It's Missile Command + Tetris. It's an example of people retroactively applying a modern idea to a game without actually understanding tdr
    Sweet Home "It was one of the first games to utilize a fully cohesive world after Metroid"
    SMH. How do people believe things like this? Sweet Home wasn't even hot on the heels of Metroid. If you include just NES games you'll have lots of candidates, and the Metroid did not invent this either.
    "Fully Cohesive Worlds" have existed for about as long as there have been games. If you include a game like Sweet Home, I can find examples of computer games back to 1979, as long as there were home computers. There were 4 Ultima games out on the PC before Metroid, and many other similar games. Adventure titles often also had forms of open worlds.
    "It's likely the first game to use diary logs to tell its' story" A quick search finds games back to 1983 at least using diaries for storytelling.

    Yie ar kung fu was the first example of a 1 on 1 fighting game. Fight me. I'll be player 2.

      Karate Champ by Data East was basically the first. It's also the first 1 on 1 fighting game where you can actually play against another player - Yie Ar Kung Fu came out later and only allowed 1-player was well.

    Never heard about Rogue or rougelike games until it suddenly appeared everywhere at once a few years ago. Too bad I don't care for the genre. Even Spelunky looks nice, but really isn't my cup of tea.

      @acmiguens 4 года назад

      I'll admit I didn't care for the genre at first. But they can be pretty diverse. Crypt of the Necrodancer is fun. Hades is amazing. You just still might find one that suits you :)
