i have to click the video just to say … dont do always a rule change to the best game ever… it dont need to be changed especially after hasbro announced that the game is getting worse ;)
This video is really demonstrating why the optimal Momir decklist is heavy on swamps and mountains but light on islands. Magic has a ton of islandwalkers, and a ton of creatures have activated abilities or upkeep costs that require red and/or black mana.
This. Optimal momir play leans hard on red especially. Losing out on islands loses out on card advantage that blue can provide, but it's a worthwhile trade.
I'm pretty sure more Islands were played back in the early days of Momir, mostly due to Azorius Guildmage, which was a hard-lock as long as you had an Island in play. I suppose the importance of that fell off pretty quickly once MTGO had more than six years worth of two-drops in the pool.
If anyone played this on magic arena, Zacama was at one point in time the only 9 drop you can get, and it was just a race to 9 so you could blow up your opponents creatures.
I used to play this on MTGO, and I'd occasionally get 11 drop Eldrazi. When I tried on Arena, my 11 mana try just fizzled because apparently there weren't any 11 drops on Arena.
The 10 drop was imperious greatwurm which is indestructible so if the game went to 10 lands it turned into people just tossing indestructible greatwurms at each other on a stalled board
@@patritchie1317 Yeah, we've seen the other MTGoldfish guys but not Phil, at least as far as I've seen. I would love to see a Commander game where Phil brings something spicy against the CardMarket guys
stormtide leviathan was the best card in the world when i was a kid. my friend Danny could never beat it in my UW control deck, and he just about cried when he bought me a booster pack for my birthday and I pulled a second one. I was so happy to see it here
Same!! That thing won me so many games in Highschool. I still slip it into every conceivable deck. It's really one of those hidden gem cards that most people don't seem to know about, and if they do they don't care too much about it, but dang that thing is powerful. Especially combined with Archetype of Imagination.
My friend put it in his blue commander deck and played the only blue deck at the table. He got Stormtide Leviathan and power gauntlet out and just countered everything afterwards, super annnoying!
My favorite memory of playing Momir on Arena was summoning the Demonlord Belzenlock who immediately exiled my entire library and I couldn't stop laughing.
I wish there was a more recent zacama card, I just learned of her because I read about her killing a compleated etali during the Events of march of the Machine but she's nowhere to be seen aside from aparantly a Reprint in lost caverns commander...
There was a fun variation that I used to play with other students when learning networking: Archchase/ Saturday morning magic. Planechase and Archenemy together. Sometimes we'd try stuff like the Archenemy being able to shift the plane but not take everyone else with them- you wouldn't be able to attack them again until the rest of the group was able to roll a shift and 'catch up'.
I haven't played magic in so long, but you guys on the magic channel clearly have so much fun with these. It makes them really enjoyable to watch, especially since they are always on the chill side.
That was hilarious when Colossal Dreadmaw showed up, and it appeared at a pretty useful time too! Of course, Akroma, Angel of Fury and Stormtide Leviathan were just perfect for closing out the duel.
The first 2.5 minutes of this are classic Momir - One player gets a mana dork and the other gets a 0/0 as their first drop. The advantage meter went crazy
Very fun, it was a great idea to play this format If you want to do it again, you may do a themed one, like a silver-bordered only, or one with only cards from the new Phyrexian expansions
I remember having an app on my phone that had a format called MoJoSto where instead of just the Momir Avatar, you also had access to Stonehewer Giant and Joira Avatars so you could access random equipments, instants, and sorceries as well. I used to have so much fun with that back in the day. 😁
Momir on Arena is horrible since they added the "random" non-land cards to either cast or discard to Momir. Bring back pure vanilla Momir. No the format that could not be beat was the one on MTGO that allowed you to do Momir for creatures and two other avatars as well - one got random instant/sorceries and the other got random equipment!
Wow, Demonic Hordes sucks so hard that it basically sealed Thoralf's defeat. This was a lot of fun! I have that big fish! I use it on a deck that is all about islandwalk and green-blue shenanigans, happy to see it doing things because I rarely get to use it lol.
this seems like it would be really fun to play irl. It is however one of my least favorite on arena, the "randomness" has such amazing ways of rewarding terrible play.
It's annoying on Arena, because they felt the need to add actual cards to the decks, so it's not actually Momir Basic. The beauty of Momir Basic, is if you win you say "That's Momir!" and if you lose you say "That's Momir." Plus you get to see cards that you've never heard of before :)
@@HurricaneGregor The only way I would be fine with it was if it was just ramp/draw spells. Iirc there were even board wipes in it which just defeats the propose lol
MTG Format Idea: Each player brings an enchantment to the game and that enchantment becomes a basic rule for both players for the entirety of the game. For example a player could bring Eye of the Storm so that all instants and sorceries copy one another.
Very interesting, the Forerunner is actually kind of problematic because the Ice dragon can't be tapped and will have to block the Eldrazi Oh wow I didn't expect the ending, the Leviathan literally turned the tide 😆
Technically playing terastodon over kill the hullbreak with zacama then swinging in with zacama and th goblin is what lost the game. Since terastodon destroyed the lands he need to kill off the leviathan the next turn.
Fun execution ! Doesn’t account for duplicates, but close enough. I also love movie on mtgo, but haven’t played in ages. Even had a guild with johria for three drop spellz.
Using the app manabox you can make the parameters of random card (must be creatures converted mana cost = 3 for example.) Just write on a scrap piece of paper what it does
Might be a bit nitpicky on a "for fun" format but I'm pretty sure the glory bringer would have been tapped for an additional turn as it was exerted before it was untapp locked by the icefall regent But still really enjoyed the video, keep up the great work guys.
Well I guess exerting states "exerted creature doesn't untap in the NEXT untap step" so it was one untap step with two restrictions simultaneously and then exerting doesn't matter anymore
You gotta entertain us with another video with the same concept or try to make it as a tournament between you guys and let the luckiest person win it 🔥
@@tmakalpha1 I'm a dumb dumb. I guess he still could have killed the Hullbreaker and exerted the Glorybringer on Akroma. That forces a block on the Muxxus and results in 13 damage and a clean board.
Whoever designed the cube and put in Boneyard Mycodrax had probably intended for the cards to be treated as cards instead of tokens, which is not an uncommon variant of Momir actually.
I always make my 2 otp anyway and use this metrc: Is my 2 drop better than my opponents 2 drop? Skip 3. If not. Spawn 3 and skip 5. Either skip 3, 5 or 7. Numbers are different now but once upon a time ago the most accelerators were at 2 and there's a 3, a 5 and a 7 spawn that just kill you so I always preferred to skip on those.
While it's not perfect, I will say that one thing Momir on MTGA does well is curate its card pool. I feel like that could've been done a bit more here. I think having a card like the bounce-bird is fine (because it will often be really good, rather than just suiciding), or even having a card like Muxus that is usually just a below-curve vanilla creature is ok, but getting something like that 3 mana creature that will always self-die is just such a bad feeling.
