Could you imagine getting trapped on an island and learning that while you were surviving with the boys, another group of survivors were eating each other just across the island. Like they all probably survived because they never met the other survivors, and it's kind of terrifying to think you were safer by not knowing about each other.
Or to think of it the other way. 'Our' group survived because they had a strong leader. He probably could have helped the other group survive as well. But, yeah, probably best that they didn't meet up.

I don't want to take anything away from Captain Musgrave. I'm sure he was an awesome and strong leader which was helped everyone survive but what also saved them was being few in numbers. The other shipwreck had 19 survivors. More people more problems more debates and different personalities to have to try to convince one idea is the best one for everyone. I'm know I can't be in a room full of 10 people. Someone always annoys me, but 5 is manageable.

nah once eating people is on the table, it's hard to take off. it would've had to turn into a battle and it was definitely best they didn't meet.

Is there a science to that? Because I personally have never had an issue with this, I can eat anything and a lot of it and still be skinny. And besides, if you’re gonna feel bad why get it in the first place. I can’t believe humans are so weak minded..

how did they find a cat after months on an island? im assuming it was on the boat and made it to shore and lived alone for all those months only for them to see it past minute?

There was an abandoned settlement in the island, which the other group of sailors actually used for shelter (sadly their side of the island had no seals to hunt).
Probably the cat came from there
I cat can float at sea until it dies of thirst. Actually, most animals can. It's how they got on these islands to begin with. Storms spread species of plants, as well as animals. The world is crazy when you think about it all.
It will be a shipwrecked cat. Like that island that has a pig population. sailing ships would often become shipwrecked without anyone knowing. Humans/animals from the ships became lost and landed on islands.
That cat knew it would be the first item on the menu with its former crew, so it headed off and found another group of humans that was coordinated and well-fed enough to help each other survive and beat the other crew in a brawl/war if needed. It knew that its old crew would either starve to death individually when the mice ran out and eventually gladiator-fight each other to the death and eat the loser. Smart cat knew how to pick its fights (or not fight).

You depict the island with palm trees and tropical but it was subantartic. It was cold and they had to battle that throughout their stay there.
Also they didn't build a boat from scratch (that failed), they modified a dinghy (a small boat used as lifeboat) they rescued from the wreck. That boat was used to sail around the coast during their time as castaways. Also the smaller group size, wide availability of seals and yes, better leadership by the captain, helped them survive.
The survivors of the other ship found the remains of an abandoned settlement, so they had shelter, but their side of the island had no seals. The main problem for survival was lack of food as a greater number of people required more resources, which quickly led to cannibalism.
It's a great story nonetheless if a little unnecessarily sweetened, they were lucky as F with their location but had the spirit and mind to make the best out of it
also, there is no such thing as a tiger seal
The temperature of the islands are fairly consistent and hardly ever below freezing

I remember watching castaway with my kid few years ago when he was 10. I can't remember exactly the scene but he said to me "he should find a computer to use the internet to email for help" - I nearly drown squirting out my drink through nose

Facts
Usually hanging around the coast is your best bet at being spotted and rescued. Probably they didn't know they would end up spending over a year in the island. It's said one group spotted smoke from a fire of the other group of castaways but didn't investigate it.

Are you comparing the 1800s with today?! With today's technologies? Rescuting rate is at best. Imagine how many have been lost and did not survive around those medieval times to 1800s

@Quirin M. I could scout 250 acres of boundary on foot in a day by myself easily. Ive got 1000 acre land These castaways were genuinly lazy.
they didn't have unlimited water, plus they wouldn't be able to be spotted for rescue in the islands interior
@@elias8294 There were five of them. Send off two separate pairs to scout around the island, while one person stays behind incase a passing ship comes

ye but the problem is, there arent any women there to make for some drama. just look at other survival series. walking dead, lost etc. the survival aspect gets worked through halfway through the first episodes and then its just drama and even more drama.

Survival tip. Gather seawater, filter large pieces if any, by hand if needed and let sit in sun to evaporate. Collect sea salt. Use to salt and dry fish. To double effeciency use clear non meltable cover arched into another container sat in the shade to collect potable non salted water. :D

It's weird that I just watched the movie a week ago after wanting to watch it since highschool after my classmate recommends it. That was 10 years ago I think. Then this is the third video I watch about the movie that was uploaded just recently. It felt like the movie was release recently when in fact it was released way back year 2000.
Could've been an awesome tale about the 2 groups warring it out n creating a civilization. Could be a great story
It would be great telling the story of captain George Dalgarno who were with his crew 20 miles away on the other side of the island at about the same time. This group descended into anarchy and cannibalism.

The hardest thing would be making fire (with no tools, lighters, magnifying glass etc) maybe self built wood friction tools with luck but that expends quite a bit of physical energy. Would also need to figure out how to construct fish traps/nets. Shelter and collecting rain water are pretty straightforward

They were probably too weak to survive another day on the open sea. They would also need money and provisions to sail back.
They had to gather funds for the expedition to go back (also apparently the captain was "persuaded to go back") I read they did a kind of public fundraising.
Imagine it happening today and they doing a kickstarter to help their friends basically ^^

The journey itself was also incredibly dangerous in the first place, as they would be sailing into a stormy, subantarctic sea to an island that was known for its treacherous cliffs and reefs. It was hard to find people who were willing to risk their money on that, on the mere hope that two castaways would be saved. Sad but true.
Because it was in the freaking 1800s!! Things took way longer then! They didn’t have a built on coast guard with a helicopter! How come you are so clueless

If i ever get stuck on an island, i will try my best to cultivate whatever i can find, hunt when i can, pick any eggs, berries and fruits i can find. Simply put, i'll do my best to stay alive. I grew up out on the countryside, so i know my way around and know how it all works, hunting, growing crops, taking care of animals, the lot. I'm not a survivor in the sense that i know everything, but i know enough to actually survive, and i have enough fat on my fat body to learn everything i need to learn. Besides, my instincts will kick in at some point, which will help me to survive on an island.
Now that is a captain for ya. Musgrave didn't give up on his men and his men didn't give up on him and they survived through teamwork.

Survivorman did a "Pacific Island" episode and said it was the easiest survival situation he'd been in. He ate like a king and hung out on the beach.

If my friends and I were stuck on a island I would make the trees hunting tools,make a house out of the ship. Would hunt seals and fruits and put the food above the fire so no one gets diseases. Next, we would draw sos and try to make a boat. So thats what I would do!
