Deep Impact colt AUGUSTE RODIN wins the 2023 Epsom Derby for O'Brien and Moore - 競馬 | ディープインパクト

  • Auguste Rodin stayed on powerfully to provide Aidan O'Brien with a record-extending ninth triumph in the Betfred Derby at Epsom on Saturday.
The impeccably bred colt, ridden by Ryan Moore, wore down the giant King Of Steel in the closing stages to erase the memory of his lamentable run in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last month.
O'Brien had given a lengthy list of reasons as to why the son of Japanese legend Deep Impact had fluffed his lines at Headquarters and, stepped up to 12 furlongs, he bounced back to his best in memorable fashion.
There will never be another Deep Impact colt in the Derby, either.
He covered just 24 mares in his final season as a stallion before his death at the age of 17. Auguste Rodin was among his tiny final crop. A collector's item, indeed, who thankfully we can all enjoy for this summer and beyond.

Congratulations to Coolmore, Aidan O'brien and Japanese fans. When Deep Impact won the Japanese triple crown, the commentator Tetsushi Baba described him as the "Crystal of modern Japanese horse racing". As in the interview Aidan O'brien, it was difficult to send the mare by thousands of km to Japan to be covered. As notable progeny by Galileo and Deep Impact, Auguste Rodin is "Crystal of eastern and western horse racing". Progenies of Deep impact have won many important derbies/oaks all over the world, including Japan, France and UK, hopefully Auguste Rodin can also win Irish Derby and other major Group 1 like King George or even the Arc

Sunday Silence was exceptional and would have won the triple crown but for another exceptional horse Easy Goer who nabbed him in the final leg belmont stakes. both of those horses dueled these 3 races so far in front of the rest of the field. They would have won triple crowns if they were running in different years. Aidan o Brien explains that so well. Great trainer and Ryan Moore just keeps getting better and better. Both were the living embodiment of what people said when asked which gunfighter was faster: "I’d hate to have to live on the difference." "In the Preakness and Breeders' Cup Classic, rider Pat Day moved down the backside - and then he Remembered he was Pat Day - and then when Day folded up, Day allowed Sunday Silence back in the race. Day moved, and then he gave it back." "In the Preakness, while picking up another cross on his reins, jockey Pat Day appeared to grab too much right line canting Easy Goer's head to the right, and in the end perhaps costing him the race by the flare of a nostril. A classic classic! Everyone will remember the 1989 Preakness and its remarkable stretch duel as long as they live. Sunday Silence and Easy Goer were generosity personified as they battled. No quality of the Thoroughbred is more admired than courage, and these two outstanding horses gave everything they had in the Preakness. There was a winner, but there was no loser. In a duel for the ages, the two greats joined battle, they bounded cheek by jowl to the wire. The two greats even changed leads in unison at the top of the stretch. They ran side by side, head to head, so close together they were brushing again and again, with Easy Goer also brushing the rail and dangerously close to it. A jewel of a duel by a snout."

Time will tell. But the brood mares he has supplied the horse breeding industry with is nothing short of phenomenal. I was at the curragh the day he won the Irish derby. Some beast of a three year old. Tactics got him beat over 10 furlong in the Irish champion. The dirt in America was a bridge too far. But J. Magnier had to try as you don't get many of his calibre. I like and respect AOB. He's one of the GOAT, but I usually take his comments about his horses with a large grain of salt. The way he talked up this one, even after the 2000 Guineas, sounded like Luigi Vercotti predicting great things for his protege, Ron Obvious of Neep's End. He lost by 22 lengths, but AOB didn't back down at all in his praise. I think he expected him to win this. He wasn't making any excuses beforehand. He said all the preparations were "perfect". I don't know if Auguste Rodin will turn out to be the best horse he's trained, but I understand why he's saying he's the most important horse Coolmore has had. It's all about breeding. They need the next Gallieo, and this one might very well fit the bill. Moreover, they still have the dam, Rhododendrum, and I'm sure they're hoping she produces one or two more classic winners.

Great Genetics have definitely moved on to new generations for Easy Goer, Sunday Silence and Deep Impact. Even with dying very premature, Easy Goer is in the bloodlines of a numerous amount of G-1 winners in the USA and Europe. Easy Goer's grandson Araafa won the Group 1 St. James's Palace Stakes, G-1 Irish 2,000 Guineas, et cetera. Easy Goer's grandson Astronomer Royal won the Group 1 French 2,000 Guineas, et cetera. Easy Goer's son Will's Way won the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, G-1 Travers Stakes, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike daughter My Flag won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, G-1 Coaching Club American Oaks, G-1 Ashland, G-1 Gazelle, G-1 Bonnie Miss, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike grandson Corinthian won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, G-1 Met Mile, G-1 Gulfstream Park Handicap, et cetera. Easy Goer's granddaughter Storm Flag Flying won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, G-1 Personal Ensign, G-1 Frizette, G-1 Matron, G-1 Shuvee, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike grandson Bulletin won the G-1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, et cetera. Easy Goer's grandson London Bridge won the G-1 Breeders' Cup Marathon, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike grandson Lion Tamer won the G-1 Cigar Mile, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike granddaughter Magical Fantasy won the G-1 Yellow Ribbon, G-1 Gamely, G-1 Ramona {Mabee}, G-1 Del Mar Oaks, G-1 Santa Barbara, et cetera. Easy Goer's grandson Audible won the G-1 Florida Derby, G-1 Holy Bull, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike granddaughter Funny Moon won the G-1 Coaching Club American Oaks, G-1 Shuvee, et cetera. Easy Goer's grandson Monba won the G-1 Blue Grass, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike grandson Dynamic One won the G-1 Suburban, et cetera. Easy Goer's daughter Furlough won the G-1 Ballerina, G-1 Distaff, G-1 Honorable Miss, et cetera. Easy Goer's son Composer won the G-1 Jim Dandy, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike daughter Relaxing Rhythm won the G-1 Molly Pitcher, et cetera. Easy Goer's lookalike granddaughter Tiz Miz Sue won the G-1 Ogden Phipps, et cetera. And many more. Great Genetics have definitely moved on to new generations for Easy Goer, Sunday Silence and Deep Impact. However, none of these compare to Galileo, Danehill, Sadler's Wells, Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, Native Dancer, Bold Ruler, Man o' War and some others. Dubawi, Tapit, Curlin, Sea the Stars and Frankel may be on their way to these aforementioned sires above.
The great Japanese sires Sunday Silence and Deep Impact both took over from Northern Taste and Tesco Boy as leading sire in the insular, restricted, big fish in small pond Japan. While a few Deep Impact's have had success with G-1 wins in Europe, et cetera, it must be noted that he was bred to the best of the best Coolmore Galileo, Sadler's Wells and Giant's Causeway mares to do so in most cases - and in the other cases he was bred to the best of the best Niarchos family mares who are descendants of the great Miesque. Actually, Sunday Silence himself did not even sire one G-1 winner in all of Europe and the U.S.A., and many attempted to, including Dance Partner, Dance in the Mood, Sundrop, Layman, Keep the Faith, Silent Name, Deep Impact {disqualified from 3rd place finish due to a positive drug test for an illegal drug}, To the Victory, Zenno Rob Roy, Heart's Cry, Sunday Joy, Seven Moons, Negotiator, Wild Sunday and others - All of these sons and daughters of Sunday Silence lost all of their G-1 races in Europe and the U.S.A. The many attempts that have been made to generate Sunday Silence's sire-line outside Japan have had very little to very modest success - sons of Sunday Silence that have stood at stud outside Japan in Europe, Australia and the U.S.A. have had very little to very modest success, including Divine Light, Born King, Keep the Faith, Layman, Tayasu Tsuyoshi, Real Impact, Bubble Gum Fellow, Genuine, Hat Trick, Silent Name, Fuji Kiseki, Fusaichi Zenon, Agnes Gold, Victoire Pisa, Neorealism, Brave Smash, Black Tuxedo, et cetera. Japan's great successes cannot be attributed only because Sunday Silence and Deep Impact. While SS's blood is oversaturated in Japan, some horses without any SS blood have also been leading sires in Japan, including the aforementioned Northern Taste and Tesco Boy, as well as King Kamehameha, Symboli Kris S, Kurofune, Rulership, Harbinger, Sakura Bakushin O, Brian's Time and Lord Kanaloa. Many horses without any SS blood at all have been greats in Japan and worldwide, including all of these G-1 winners: Panthalassa {G-1 Saudi Cup & G-1 Dubai Turf winner}, El Condor Pasa {G-1 winner in Europe}, Taiki Shuttle {G-1 winner in Europe}, Seeking the Pearl {G-1 winner in Europe}, Lord Kanaloa, Vodka, TM Opera O, Jungle Pocket, King Kamehameha, Apapane, Narita Brian, Symboli Kris S, Meisho Samson, Rey de Oro, Agnes Digital, Mayano Top Gun, Air Groove, Grass Wonder, Tap Dance City, Sweep Tosho, Satono Crown, etc etc.

Of course he was good at Godolphin, considering the numerous top class races he won for them. Stop embarrassing yourself and there can be more than one reason why owners part ways with retained jockeys, other than whether they are good or not.
Frankie rode and won on Coolmore's Scorpion in the St Leger at a time when he was retained as Godolphin's jockey and they were in a big dispute with Coolmore, so that was the beginning of the end for that arrangement.
